Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S4 Now Receiving OTA Update (Updated)

gs4 update

The update for Verizon’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is receiving an over-the-air (OTA) update this morning. We are still waiting for Big Red to publish the changelog, but are assuming that it’s the same update that was available yesterday via desktop upgrade assistant.

The update includes apps-to-SD support, and also patches the previous bootloader and root exploits. So if you are into hacking your device, I’d try to put this one off if you can.

As soon as we have more details, we’ll update this post.

To grab the update, head into Settings>More>About phone>Software update>Check new.

Update:  The update is identical to the update that went live yesterday:

Cheers Bill, @cjohnson481, @brownsfan88, @knowles79, @Ty101691, @JustinL81and everyone else!

The OTA failed on my S4. Supposedly I can use “verizon update assistant” to install it but the update assistant does not load when I connect my phone and I can’t find the file to install on my laptop. Any suggestions?

  • JV920

Does anyone know how I can get blocking mode without rooting?

  • JV920

Can Verizon please give us “Blocking mode”. There is no reason why every other service provider has it and Verizon doesn’t!

  • StargateNH

Since when does Verizon get updates so soon after an issue is detected? Usually takes 6 months. Oh well, I run LiquidSmooth on my GS3 VZW.

  • vzw g4

pdanet no longer works with non rooted vzw g4 after this update 🙁

    • Kev

Didn’t see this until after I updated. Would a Factory reset bring me back to pre-updatr status?

      • Kev

Found this tip in Play Store. PdaNet still works. When pop up appears, hit home button not cancel. It works.

        • Mike

Or just Don’t hit anything and it still works. Foxfi does anyway.

  • FknTwizted

does anybody know when s3 and n2 are getting the next updates? I remember reading about it but unable to find the article.

    • jboogie1289

All I know is that it was apparently or supposedly pulled due to the fact that it didn’t cooperate with TW or some excuse along those lines. I mean, the S4 came with 4.2 and it’s already getting updated again. Kinda reminds me of when I bought my S3 and no sooner than I left the store it was already getting an update pushed to it. Sigh, twiddles thumbs.

      • FknTwizted

Well I thought they said that the update for (at least N2 to 4.2.2+) was suppose to happen in may or june. I hope they dont go back to their old ways of leaving older (yet still top of the line) devices in the dust because of newer product coming out.

  • Gage

I don’t car for the transparent notification bar

    • Splendor Thought

I thought that was new, but couldn’t remember if it was transparent before the update. Oh well..I kinda like it.

  • coolsilver

    Nope nope nope

  • sheila

have not even gotten my galaxy 3 update

  • dennydramoutar

I am on Verizon and have updated and voodoo kept my root. I’m willing to send photos if anyone needs proof.

  • Paul Hansen

I’ve yanked the radio out of it for those that don’t want to flash the update for fear of losing root but would like to take advantage of the radio changes. Seems to give better reception in low signal areas. I’ve been using it for about 12 hours on CM10.1

  • Trevor

I wonder if the new radios make any difference.

  • milanyc

Does it include Band 4 LTE support?

  • Kanaga Deepan N

Whether Voodoo OTA Root Keeper helps to preserve root after this update? I hope it can..

But re-locking BL is another thing…

    • Paul Hansen

Voodoo has been unable to retain root.

  • DanSan

if you’re rooted but on stock rom, do this to stop OTA’s

Frozen via Titanium Backup: FWUpgrade.apk and SDM.apk
    Renamed file: /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak
    Renamed file: /system/app/ wssyncmlnps.apk to wssyncmlnps.apk.bak

    • JimmyHACK

Rooted or Not. Just say no thanks on the pop up and it won’t bug you with the update again.

      • DanSan

        Lol good luck with that.

        • JimmyHACK

Not sure if you are familiar with their newer update method. Remind me later will do an automatic install eventually. If you select no thanks the only way to install the current update is for you to manually go to setting for it and it tells you how. Specifically listing it as “User Rejected” and saying it “will not download” it. It will however let you know if a newer update comes along and you can select again.

Freezing apps still works, but it is nice to see them making it a little more user friendly. If Verizon makes them change it down the road sometime to have to force we will see and not be surprised, but for now it’s nice.

          • This is good to know, but with the way Verizon does business, I’d DEFINITELY say better safe than sorry with something like this. EDIT: In other words, freeze, freeze, freeze!

      • schoat333

Eventually your phone will update itself. Usually in the middle of the night.

        • JimmyHACK

          See my reply above

        • Yeah, don’t rely on saying ‘no thanks’. I thought this was sufficient with a previous phone; I was wrong. Eventually it took the update in the middle of the night and caused me a lot of problems.

        • michael arazan

My D1 updated itself in the middle of the night, but I was awake and saw it happen wondering why my phone reset itself, so yes it will happen automatically

    • schoat333

Thanks! I had SDM frozen, but did not do the rest.

    • Cameron Rich

Awesome I have been trying to figure this out for a long time. So frustrated with that thing popping up. I am a newbie with Titanium Backup and not familiar with these steps for sure. Right now I froze the two and it went away. What I don’t know is how to rename or if putting them in a frozen status will cause problems?

  • MacNificent

And where is the update for my Galaxy s3 verizon?

    • Derek Gelinas

      • MacNificent

true true. I guess Im just looking for that phone that doesnt need to be rooted and rom’ed to work the way it should.. I just unrooted to get the I535VRBMF1 update. I just need a phone to to what I need it to do out of the box with a few extra enhancements to customize to my liking.

  • Ryan5609

Updated yesterday, haven’t really noticed any improvements (other than app 2 sd). I wish Kies would have told me it was going to completely wipe my phone to install the new update (it said it “may” remove data but I didn’t expect a complete loss, good thing I backed up first. I don’t really care about the new locked boot loader, I am waiting until 5.0 comes out before I unlock and root, I am fine with running stock until then. By the time 5.0 comes out I am sure and new unlock will be found.

  • michael

    Will we loose root?

    • Long Nguyen

      Don’t update. It’s a trap!

    • JimmyHACK

You will lose root, but gain a new secure locked bootloader that you can’t downgrade in odin to old system images.

      • BetterWithRoot

You almost make it sound positive…

        • JoshGroff

Sarcasm doesn’t come across well in text. You just have to guess.

    • Steve Benson

      Really? Come on man.

  • EdubE24

Instead of patching previous bootloader and root exploits trying fixing the freaking lag!

  • Jeremy Shifflett

I’m not touching this update till a root exploit is found, who knows when that will be. For now i’ll stick with Jelly Beans rom, loving it.

    • JimmyHACK

They have it rooted. Problem is you need new firmware for wifi/camera to work and if you install new firmware without the locked bootloader (which it checks for) you are left with a paperweight. They working on it now.

      • Jeremy Shifflett

nice, I didn’t know that much process is already made.

    • Ditto on Liquid Smooth 2.8

  • cransr

im sure this community will have an unlock tool in about a week. Im really not concerned just annoyed.

  • Chad

VZW can keep their dirty updates! I’m running CleanRom on my S4 and it runs smooth like it should have out of the box.

    • Ej McCarty

is that a touchwiz based rom or aosp? I was just wondering if it is aosp, how is the camera working. I’ve rooted my phone just haven’t done a rom yet because idk which ones are good yet.

      • Steve Benson

        TW based.

      • JimmyHACK

Look into the google experience rom for aosp and working great

      • Loving the AOSP Roms. I’m running LiquidSmooth 2.8.

The HDR function on the AOSP cameras is glitchy, but otherwise, I love me some Vanilla(ish) Android

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Hmmmmm. Assuming this update will partially nuke my resale value. So I’ll just calm down and not do it.
