Insider Tips New YouTube App, Will Allow for Video Search Multitasking

YouTube logo

Ryan Socio, the gentleman who first reported the name Hangouts in regards to Google’s “Babel” project, recently got his hands on an unreleased version of the YouTube app for Android. According to Socio, the app has some sweet new features on the way.

Without giving any info on when we could expect the new version to hit Google Play, the insider states that the app will feature real multitasking capabilities, allowing watchers to view their videos, while also searching for other videos at the same time.

While inside a video, a little arrow will appear – with a quick swipe with your finger on the arrow, a browser will appear, allowing you to search simultaneously for more content as the video plays inside of a smaller box. According to the source, the app performs very smoothly and will retain the YouTube app’s current aesthetics.

We will definitely keep you posted.

I would like the ability just to reply to comments. Seriously how difficult is it to add this feature and why it’s it still not been added to the app?

I’d like the ability to have the Youtube app not report “unsupported video format” for every single video I try to play. Will that feature be available in an upcoming release?

      No flash player?

Cool. I almost always love new toys. Can’t wait!

Id like an update that makes YouTube actually work. I’m tired of going to the mobile site…

Would also love to see the additional features below the video to go back to swipe-able categories of About Video/Suggestions/Similar Artists/Comments instead of a single stacked column of everything where you have to scroll and expand sections forever. That’s how it was a few updates ago and was much more user friendly!

And yes, play in the background/with screen off would also be super

Anyone else have problems when viewing Youtube videos on the Note 2? When in portrait mode, it cuts off the top of the video but there is plenty of room on the screen. I find that I’m always watching in landscape just to avoid the eye sore.

    • SRodriguez

Not here, HD videos use all the screen. What YouTube version are you using?

      • XvierX

I’m using the same app that came preinstalled. I just noticed that the first video fits the screen just fine but when I view a second video the problem appears. I’m wondering if the ads are the problem. It looks like the screen never resizes after the ad is skipped.

        • SRodriguez

I’m rooted and have an ad blocker installed so it could be that….

I’d like the ability to listen to a video with the screen turned off.

      Agreed.

I think that kind of defeats the purpose of a VIDEO service :)

That being said, I totally agree with you…I have a lot of playlists on Youtube that I play in a browser tab on my computer while I’m doing other things. There are also a lot of other “videos” that I could see people wanting to listen to but not watch (ambient sounds, sermons, “pod-casts”, etc)

I think they just don’t want us to turn youtube into a free music player…which is what many of us would do (but I don’t feel bad about it because I also subscribe to Google Music for $8/mo).

So…I don’t think we’re going to see it anytime soon.

I agree with both of you… probably won’t happen for the exact reasons you stated. I still prefer using my spotify subscription for music, but sometimes there are songs I can only find on youtube.

        iOS has it…why shouldn’t android?

Screen/battery life would be better as well. Listen to a video or music, but don’t really need the screen? Would be nice to turn it off if needed. I listen to Ted Talks while cleaning the house sometimes. I hate to admit it, but I’ll sometimes listen to a Ted Talk or a product review on long road trips. I don’t need the screen to be on because I’m driving.

Maybe not something native like hitting the power button/lock the device. Maybe just an option within the Youtube app to turn the screen mostly black during playback like a computer screensaver. Think Daydream, but for Youtube video playback.

I’d love a listen only feature too, great for documentaries and lectures.

Works great for music! I’ve been using it for a while now on my Note 2.

I would love to see continuous play of a youtube channel. For example, after completing a video, five seconds later it would start the next one on that specific channel.

A welcome (and much needed) addition!
