Wednesday Poll: What Android Launcher Are You Currently Using?

nova launcher update

It has been way too long since we last asked our community members what their favorite Android launcher was. Since the last time we asked, there are a few newcomers to the game who have certainly taken some of that marketshare away from the big dogs. Apparently the last time we asked, Nova Launcher wasn’t even on the scene, so that should definitely change things up.

If you answer “Other”, please let us know in the comments which launcher you are using.

What Android launcher are you currently using?

Still waiting on that LauncherPro rewrite…

    • Steve Benson

…you’ll be waiting a long time.

  • gokusimpson

Zeam launcher for GB. Super quick. Hasn’t been updated in a long time, but doesn’t really need to.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eric.tom1 Eric Tom

No love for Atom Launcher? Nobody seems to know of it but I really like it. Smooth, stable, no lag or waiting for screen redraws. It has a lot of theming options and some unique features that I’ve never seen on any other launcher. And, it’s free!

  • bjs

Why do so many people use Nova over Apex? Is it just a word of mouth thing. They seem to offer the same features.

    • azndan4

Because people like paying for features in Nova that are free in Apex.

      • abqnm

I have paid for both. I used Apex for a long time because it had many more features than Nova. On my Galaxy Nexus, Nova runs significantly faster with much smoother animations than Apex. Apex is choppy and tears when changing screens. Obviously this would vary by device, but use what works.

Plus it is good to support developers that produce a quality product.

        • C-Law

Apex ran choppy for me compared to nova on my gnex. I stuck with nova on my s3 and got nova prime during a Google 10 cent sale. The features it adds are great, like the missed calls and txts icon counter and stuff. I have a few gestures set like swipe up for recent apps and swipe up from the drawer icon to get Google now. Kinda helps on the s3

      • Simon Belmont

I grabbed Nova Launcher Prime during a Google Play Store 25 cent sale. It’s a fantastic custom launcher and it’s noticeably smoother than Apex Launcher, for me.

That said, I do like Apex Launcher as well. I have them both, actually.

    • Eion

I have purchased ADW, Apex and Nova. Nova is just the better launcher in my opinion.

    • Aardvark99

Apex didn’t render some of my widgets correctly (beautiful widgets 4×1 weather on my S3) so switched to Nova. Nova also seemed faster so I stuck with it and paid for the full version.

    • gm49

I liked the Apex settings better thsn Nova. I loved having folders inside the spp draeer, but those folders could not hold very many shortcuys, which greatly reduced their usability. NOVA does fine with tabs in the app drawer.

Apex has never resized shortcuts on the scrolling dock bar. When in landscape mode with 7 icons in the doc bar, the icond are truncated-which annoys me greatly. Add small icons to the dock bar and i might switch back.

    TSF

  • Rodeojones000

I actually use Nova and Apex. Nova seems to run better on my Nexus 10, I prefer Apex on my phone. Also own the Prime/Pro versions of each.

  • EvanTheGamer

There should only be one launcher listed in the poll above, and that one launcher is…

NOVA Launcher, ’cause it reigns supreme above all others!

    • Michael

      True story

  • tomn1ce

Nova Launcher all day long with a touch of LMT….nice

  • Tom Z

I use stock, because I want the best battery life and lag free experience. I’m under the impression any add-on launcher will always be slower, because isn’t it just a skin over the stock system? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/BlackBlizzNerd Ben Landwehr

Oh no. Maybe some launchers are too obtrusive, but launchers like Nova, Apex, and now Action, are a big upgrade from stock. It’s stock with speed tweaks and some extra added functionality and features. Of course those are optional to use, though. You can have the launcher and never notice you’re not using stock.

      • Tom Z

So, if I use Nova Launcher, does the stock launcher not even load into memory? Will it help with the home screen re-draw delays that sometimes occur?

        • Nick

Just disable or delete the stock launcher after you install a 3rd party replacement

          • Tom Z

Thank you… I didn’t know you could disable the stock launcher. I thought it was just part of the Operating System.

          • Tom Z

I just started using Nova Launcher after this post. I’m really liking it so far.

        • Steve Benson

Whatever launcher you’re using will be the only launcher loaded into memory as long as you have Nova set as your default.

  • regkilla

Nova Launcher the best. 0 lag. Fast loading times.

  • jake miller

i reccomend TT Launcher. its good for gb users who want a jb feel & look.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jeremy.sheehan Jeremy Sheehan

since I got ICS on my Bionic, I have been using Nova. In my pRE-ICS days, I used a variety of launchers. If you want a highly customizable and very unique launcher, give SSL launcher a try. That was my fav before Nova

  • Bionic

Nova launcher makes bionic quick and snappy.

  • wm snyder

wow 32% are still using stock

  • Marc

Wow, no love for Holo Launcher HD.

  • dylan84

Been using Nova for a long time and plan on continuing using it.

  • jab416171

    SF Launcher

  • http://www.facebook.com/Christopher.Raymond.Brown Chris Brown

Anyone still waiting for the Launcher Pro rewrite? Haha.

    • http://twitter.com/cStyle cStyle

I gave up about 5 months ago and went to launcher, have not looked back.

    • MichaelFranz

Loved this launcher for my old DINC and Some TBolt Roms, helped get rid of that nasty 3 button HTC launcher

    • Butters619

The funny thing is how many installs LP still gets.

    • Simon Belmont

Ha. I just had to say your avatar is awesome.

I love the variations people are doing on the equals sign for equality. But yours is, by far, my favorite so far.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Christopher.Raymond.Brown Chris Brown

Thanks. I got it from George Takei!

        • Simon Belmont

Haha. Now it all makes sense!

George Takei is awesome! Thanks for replying.

    • Galnex31

      Yes!

  • umataro42

Nova Launcher, and paid for Prime so I could use the gesture settings (and supporting the developer is a nice side benefit of that).

  • jak_341

Stock on my Galaxy Note 2. Nova is my 2nd choice.

    • JoshGroff

That’s what I’m talking about, but I kinda sold my note 2 for a laptop with an i5 and a nexus 4. >.> So now it’s back to Nova.

  • yankeesusa

I may be in the few but I like stock. I liked htc sense back when I had htc now I like Samsung touchwiz on my note 2.

  • Tom Kircher

    Other… Lightning launcher

  • reyalP

TSF Launcher for now. Yes, I know its expensive but I wanted to try something a little different. I have also use Nova launcher in the past.

  • http://BandM-Services.com/ Billy W.

Nova Prime! Hand Over Fist better than any launcher I’ve used before it

  • http://www.facebook.com/scott.calibraxis Scott Edward Calibraxis

I was loving Go Launcher, but now that I’ve put some time into customizing Next 3D, I use that. Not too many widgets, not a trillion themes, but it is incredibly fluid, the 3D is a pleasure to use, and the app layouts/customizations are amazing.

  • http://twitter.com/JonWGee Jon W. Gee

I’ve grown tired of all the traditional android launchers. I’m using Empire Launcher, which is *don’t shoot me* an iPhone clone.

    • wm snyder

      get -a-rope!

  • NoBullet

    Stock Life

  • Scott

    No love for ol’ LauncherPro?

    • jak_341

Whatever happened to Fede? Dude was a big player in the Froyo days.

      • tyguy829

I think he’s still working on that rewrite lol

      • nightscout13

Looking at his website, there hasn’t been an update in over a year. Looks like he abandoned the launcher :(

    • dylan84

      LauncherPro is still around?

    • http://twitter.com/DannyAree DannyAree ! 

They remade it … its still in the Play Store but its in the past for me… Best Froyo/Gingerbread launcher ever

    • Sirx

I figured that had been taken behind the shed at this point. Has it not?

    • Eion

I bought LauncherPro the first day Droid X was released. After numerous BS “It’s coming” posts I went to Nova and never looked back. The “rewrite” went from a few months, to many months, to going on years now haha. Even if Fede did finally release a new Launcher Pro I would never use it after all the BS.

    • Aardvark99

I certainly got my money’s worth out of that launcher back on my Droid X, it was the first Android app I paid for I think. Abandoned or not, I still consider it one of the best Android applications ever. I’d love to see Fede update the thing one last time to make the plus features 100% free and open source the code. Letting it linger unsupported in the store, IMOHO, craps all over its legacy.

  • Detonation

Been using Nova for a while, but recently tried out a few of the newer ones…SF Launcher, Chameleon, Atom…they were decent but not enough to switch from Nova. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Action Launcher recently so I might give that a try soon. 15 min is hard to tryout a launcher in though.

  • james

i know many people use their stock interface or nova launcher, but i use stock android on my nexus 4 :)

    • C-Law

I like the stock launcher, my main reason for nova is bc i like having 3 docks to scroll through, and I like to split up the apps and widgets sections in the drawer so they each have infinite scrolling

  • Greg

Anyone know what launcher/icon pack they are using in the pic up top?

  • NicholasMicallef

Trebuchet on my phone (CM10.1), Nova on my tablet (AOKP) and I have enjoyed using Go Launcher for quite a while in the past.

    • eidylon

      Great avatar! N7

      • NicholasMicallef

ME is awesome xD. I also happen to love my Nexus 7… So 2 birds with one stone?

        • eidylon

Indeed! LOVE IT! Best video game franchise so far I do believe!

  • Ron

Been using lock-screen replacements since day one with the OG (Wait you can install this app and get more than 3 homescreens!?)

But ever since Ice Cream Sandwich I haven’t felt the need. Google did a great job on the stock launcher. Also speed and stability > features.

    • NicholasMicallef

I’ve never seen any negative difference in speed or stability using custom launchers, so I might as well have the features too…

      • LionStone

Yep, gestures rock! Especially with a 5″ screen.

  • hldc1

Stock on my Asus Infinity Pad. Stock on my Droid DNA.

  • bewilderedprophet

Im using the Xperia Z launcher port.

  • Douglas Hill

I recommend everyone check out Action Launcher. The developer constantly adds new useful features. While it looks minimal, it is quite powerful.

    • robertlwalters

      Agreed!

    • tanknspank

I definitely recommend everyone to put some thought into trying it out. You have 15 minutes in most cases to change your mind, but it hooked me way before then.

    • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

New features? None of the features everyone wants are there….

    • r0lct

I used it for a week and went back to Nova. Not because it is bad, it is very good. It just wasn’t as good match with my usage. However I can see people liking it more than Nova.

  • Michael Downs

    Xperia on my galaxy s3!!

  • Kenny Larson

Nova. I use it to move the apps in my tray from 5 to 7, to cut my home screens down to 3 and have them circle back around when you get to the end.

  • tyguy829

Why would any of you use stock? If you really like stock that much, why wouldn’t you just use nova? You could leave it 100% stock if you really wanted, but be able to backup and restore multiple layouts across devices.

    • KatsumeBlisk

Because Nova still isn’t 100% stock. I notice a difference with how rows are done on the Galaxy Nexus vs 4.2 stock.

      • tyguy829

Are you saying that even after adjusting the number of rows and columns, showing the permanent search bar, and making the margins of the desktop and dock the same as stock, there is still a difference? I don’t see how that’s possible.

    • Detonation

If you want to use Moto’s Circles widget, you have to use the stock launcher.

      • tyguy829

oooooh…i didn’t think of skinned launcher’s that come “stock” with the device. I was just thinking stock meant AOSP. Good call

    • jak_341

Nova has been lagging for me lately. TouchWiz has run very smooth.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackBlizzNerd Ben Landwehr

    Nova Launcher, all day!

    • LionStone

Yep, and on the wife’s phone too! Hah!

  • KatsumeBlisk

Stock is kind of misleading… There’s stock Android, Sense, TouchWiz, etc.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Stock means any launcher that comes stock on your device.

  • Bobby Cornwell

    Nova all day, ‘erryday!

  • tanknspank

After the update Chris pushed out today, it’s Action Launcher and Action Launcher alone. Before, it was Chameleon Launcher, but Action Launcher is just to damn innovative.

    • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Was going to buy it but he refused to answer my question… when is custom icon support coming, i wanted to know since new launcher might be introduced at I/O and it might be better.

      • tanknspank

It is, he answered a couple friends of mine yesterday: https://twitter.com/chrismlacy/status/316676998749618176

        • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Yes but i wanted to know ETA, from what he told me, it could have been a few months.

          • tanknspank

Whatever float’s your boat man. ETA’s are sparse around these parts. I’m just happy to support Chris, as not many other people think outside of the box like he does. I’m sure icon support will come in due time, but if you are unwilling to commit the $4+ till then (and I don’t blame you), I’m not going to try to convince you to do otherwise.

  • igotgame

    Nova launcher.. The only launcher

  • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

what is the launcher in the picture?

  • ßen Murphy

Nova, got Prime during the 99 cent sale. Funny thing is I bought it through my then rooted Kindle with JB, until I switched to Nexus devices =) I came from a Tbolt and we all know that story.

  • Joe miggs

That awkward moment when you click view see results and my vote is the only vote

    • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

awkward moment when your vote is not the only vote, in fact over 100 voted.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Don’t worry, it was short lived!

  • Sean Skeels

ughhhh now im gonna wanna know what icon pack that is. Nova for life!

  • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

Using Nova at the moment, bought it and haven’t looked back since.

    • El_Big_CHRIS

I use Nova all the time. But now I’m using the Xperia’s Z launcher that was ported. Pretty customizable but not like Nova.
