Google Sound Search Widget Now Available Through Google Play

Goodbye SoundHound and Shazam, hello Sound Search! Google’s very own music recognition widget is now on Google Play, allowing users to instantly recognize music which will then link you to Google Play for purchase. Previously only available to devices running Jelly Bean, now everyone running at least Android 4.0+ can take advantage of this neat app. For some, Shazam still holds more functionality and features, but Sound Search is perfect for the minimalist like myself.

Go grab it!

What wallpaper is in the above shot?

  • Gary Walsh

According to the Play Store, it doesn’t work on my Nexus 7. 🙁

  • I only wish it would save the songs somewhere instead of going away and leaving you to have to try and remember it…Or does it and I just don’t know about it?

  • NicholasMicallef

Doesn’t work even nearly as well as soundhound for me and it has less features, although it is nice to have some of the functionality integrated in the OS.

    What clock widget is that?

    • Steve Benson

It’s the default Jellybean clock widget.

  • XvierX

Widget is too big… soundhound is 1×1.

  • Yeaaahhhh Devin Townsend!!

  • Franz

Tim you have the best music taste on DL!

Devin Townsend is awesome. I have his entire discography. Love what he did with Ghost, and Epicloud was good too from his most recent stuff.

    Rock on prog-brotha.

  • Tyler

I have still yet to determine if it works better than shazam or soundhound. I do like how Shazam stores all your tags so you can access them later.

    • Do does this. Click the little clock on the right. It takes you to your history.

      • Tyler

Didn’t notice that in the screenshot. I figured it was the same one that’s in android 4.1.1 which doesn’t have that.

        • they must have added that in 4.2 because I’ve had it for awhile.

          • they did…..love this feature and the fact that it is synced between all my devices.

  • I tried to use this for a while but Shazam still completely smokes it.

  • HELL YEAH DTP! That is all.

  • John

US only again! Getting ridiculous now! Its a widget!! People use Android outside the us!!!

  • legend618

    another USA feature only..next

    • NathanDomier

seriously, quite the disappointment there. I’d bet if someone could upload the APK we could sideload it… maybe?

  • Chris

    what icons are those?

    • Tersus icons, available here: bit.ly/playtersus

  • Martin

Why is it US only? People live outside the us!

  • guest

Why only us? People live outside the us!

Google now does this, just by saying “what song is playing?”

    • thanks for sharing! much better than the widget in my opinion. not in the way, but still quickly accessible.

      • EvanTheGamer

        Widget is better.

    • Daniel Maginnis

yeah, and google now is at least a hold press and swipe away. a lot of phones (well, mine) cannot access google now from the lock screen. on top of that, its actually easier to tap the mic at the resident google search widget. lastly, it isnt very convenient to have to ask “what song is playing?” every time you want to use the widget. especially if a song is playing, and it cant understand you. the other option without widget is to “simply” type it in the search bar.

ill take the widget. and i’m glad it’s finally here. just like google wallet, having it only on my nexus 7 sucks cuz it stays at home.

  • Prime7

While it’s nice to have a pretty widget, Shazam still gets better, more consistent results.

  • Rodys Gonzalez

  • Still only finds songs you can buy from the play store. It is cool, but needs to be so much better.

  • someone with the apk? play store is US-only

  • cgalyon

Personally I prefer SoundHound. I tried Google’s variant for a while, but it just didn’t seem to pick up as many songs. Additionally, as mentioned above and below, the lyrics feature is kind of nice.

    • +1 for lyrics but Google Sound Search has gotten better. I think it helped when they expanded their library with the big music labels.

  • Google Sound Search would be so much more useful if it stored the result in my Google Search History. Instead when searching from Google Now I only get this
“Searched for what song is this7:16pm”

  • Craig Pardue

Yayyy…. Now my DNA has sound search….. The Google now “what’s this song” feature still no work tho.. ;-(

  • Diablo81588

Last time I used it, it was worthless. Only detected songs that were for sale in Google play. Maybe it’s gotten better, who knows.

  • NexusPhan69

Uhhhh. I’ve been using this widget for months. Why is this being posted now?

    • Diablo81588

Did you not read the article? It was released to Google play.

      • NexusPhan69

What was it before? Only available built in to select devices?

        • Kazahani

There’s a concept that you need to be aware of. It’s known as RTFA.

          • NexusPhan69

Calm down loose butthole. I was running ICS when I downloaded it over summer. Droid Life should have posted the apk then and it would have actually been news worthy. That’s why I was lost. Because I did exactly what the article claimed I couldn’t do.

    • Daniel Maginnis

i’m pretty sure it was only available on the nexus 7 before today (possibly the nexus 4 and 10, but dont know)

  • Devin Townsend Project is amazing. I saw him with Strapping quite a few years ago, what a great show.

    • My love for Devin is deep. The dude is a fabulous musician and wonderful human.

      • I didn’t even read this article, I simply saw Dev and commented, love that man and everything he does

  • EvanTheGamer

Works like a dream! Wow. Freakin’ awesome!

Oh goodie! Most excellent. Thanks for sharing!

  • Still needs to have lyrics like Shazam has. That is one of the main reasons I use it for, especially if I already know the name of the song. I also like Shazam’s karaoke feature which plays the lyrics in time to the song. Not mandatory features, but adds value.

    • I never knew about those extra features and I have the paid version (via free app of the day). Now I’m going to have to go check it out lol.

      • NexusPhan69

SoundHound is the best. I like whistling the random songs that pop into my head and getting the names quickly. Saves me from going crazy all day wondering about it.

  • So what you’re saying is the Rezound will never officially see this.
