Holy Sh*t, Google Sucks at Selling Devices Through Google Play

At 11:58AM Pacific, the LG Nexus 4 went back up for order through Google Play. The following is the story of one man trying to buy one.

“In stock,” hooray! Do work, Google.

Checkout screen, profit! Click, “Proceed.”

Wait, what…error?

Refresh! Umm, now my cart is empty?

Try everything, all over again.

Oh, you think I’m a spam bot, Google?

Refresh. Refresh.

10 minutes later. Sold out.

The end.

  • DC_Guy

Welp…I got my Verizon Note 2 shipping notification today. Oh well Google, I tried. Looks like Sammy won this round.

  • http://twitter.com/poqonos Debashis Dutta

I got the exact same, tried for 30 min since it was showing up as ‘add to cart’ once you refresh the page. I am so disappointed.

  • http://twitter.com/Patfactorx David Pat

Google has never been good with people who are willing to pay them.

  • duke69111

I have a 16gb in my cart, If I get past the proceed button, who wants it. :)

  • EC8CH

    “fackwors”

    Definition:
Expression heard from frustrated android fanboys as they try desperately to order a Nexus 4.

  • Anthoni

Slap some iambic pentameter in there and you have yourself a classic tragic love story lol

  • William_Morris

Oh sweet GlaDOS commentary: “Well, you know the old formula: Comedy equals tragedy plus time. And you have been asleep for a while. So I guess it’s actually pretty funny when you do the math.”

  • a.youth.in.Asia

    CAPTCHA 1 : Kellex 0

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      :(

  • TuckandRoll84

It helps if you put in the captcha correctly.

    It should be fackwors.

    But anyway, that sucks yo.

  • Edu

The word was fackwors not fadwors

    • hkklife

I could think of a similar sounding word that would be much more appropriate for this situation. But in all seriousness, when it comes to stacking up against Apple and Amazon for sales & support of hardware, Google acts more like Notion Ink than anyone else!

maybe next time don’t waste your time taking screenshots

    • Hunter

He wanted to share with the community, I appreciate that.

It’s still letting me add one to cart…
Does it not work after that?
I don’t want to try to order one to test it…

  • Tony Allen

Not entirely sure how Google sucks at selling things through the play store, on a normal day when there aren’t eleventy-billion people all trying to do the exact same thing at the exact same time, it works pretty fluidly.

    • PhoenixPath

      Selling apps? no problem.

That’s probably why the headline specified “devices”…which Google has proven, beyond all reasonable doubt, they suck at selling.

    • droid

I don’t think so…that many people trying to get the Nexus4, just smartphone geeks are, most of the normal people don’t even know what nexus is, the true i tried to get one but instead got the note 2.

  • Alexander Garcia

    Unacceptable Google! Unacceptable!

  • zebra

    Wow that really sucks

  • Xephik

You shouldn’t have refreshed. I mashed the “Proceed” button for about 45 seconds (The yellow notice stayed up top, alternating between 2-3 different error messages), and then I got one.

My 8GB model is on its way ^.^

  • chris125

At least now they limited it to 2 per order, especially with how many people just bought them to resell to the fools who can’t wait a few weeks and jack up the prices

  • Bob Allen

Funny – the exact same thing happened to me. I called the 1-855 number and was told there was nothing in my cart and that I should try again. Yeah – they major suck! I wonder if anyone managed to get one.

  • gallyjh

i just kept clicking on ‘proceed’ and even though it said ‘high demand’ error, it eventually let me through after like 30 clicks

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I tried this for a bit with no luck. :(

      • gallyjh

You didn’t page refresh right? That was the mistake I kept making for the first 10 minutes.

    • Droidzilla

      100+ clicks with no dice.

  • DanWazz

I’d be pretty pissed if I were trying to buy this phone.

  • Da’Man

your captcha answer was wrong, therefore no nexus for you!

  • Do She

Already out of stock. Your headline couldn’t be more true.

  • wes

Every person that works at Google’s retail division should be canned. I’m serious.

  • Chris Hollenbeck

    fackwars

  • TheCheapGamer

I’m pretty sure if it sold out in 10 minutes…they don’t suck at selling.

    • SamIam

Stupid comment. The product sells itself. Allowing an item to be placed in the shopping cart, then randomly removed before allowing checkout, Google pisses off a LOT of people, sending them back into the hands of Apple or the carriers. Their ordering system must be modified so that it does not ever allow more items to be added to shopping carts than Google plans on selling.

  • Dan

    fackwors!

  • Forehead

the captcha was clearly fackwors, you are obviously a spambot.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ethan.winkley Ethan Winkley

I’ll bet they release a 16gb and a 32gb model at existing prices in two weeks – just like they did for the N7… This is a sign, people! ;)

    • chris125

they don’t need to release a higher storage model as shown by how well these are selling. They will wait at least a few months maybe put the 32gb on verizon again like with the galaxy nexus

  • http://twitter.com/ajdomanico Anthony Domanico

    Someone got rick’d.

    Google’s no stranger to looooooove…

  • dedduck87

You do know that you typed the security code wrong LOL

    • LionStone

You’re only about the tenth person that mentioned it…

  • http://twitter.com/mattlgroff Matt Groff

That’s my story from last time. Done trying.

  • MttFrog13

Looks like they were trying to stop bots from ordering large amounts of the nexus 4 in order to resell them online. Seems like it backfired.

  • rainman

    The captcha was typed incorrect

  • Jeremy Lukan

Someone needs to get some actual sales figures.

  • chris125

The one time I am glad I am on verizon and don’t have to deal with this. hahah

  • http://profiles.google.com/lwvyruz luke woodruff

Im so pissed off. God damnit google are you really going to make me get a note 2 or something.

    • chris125

Google is making money regardless of what android device you buy……

      • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

They’re not, at least not directly.

        • D4niel

You don’t think that the device makers have to have licensing deals with Google to include Google Play?

        • chris125

Anytime an android device is activated they are making $$$. Plus you think they are making that much off these devices? It’s very doubtful

          • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

That’s why I said not directly. They make no money at all from the actual sale of any non-Nexus – they make money from the activation. It’s a subtle difference, but a difference nonetheless.

    • carlinscuderi

      I love my Note II!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Jasonmullens Jason A Mullens

Get your captcha right or it wont work…

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

This was basically the same experience I had trying to buy a Nexus 4 when it launched in the UK two weeks ago.

Google really need to hire some Amazon engineers and a VP or something. This is just terrible.

  • nonameo

    boom. headshot.

  • Adam

The captcha was “fackwors” not “fadwors”.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Yeah it told me that too heh. Gave me a new one that eventually worked. :P

      • Justin W

Did you end up getting one?

      • Smeckle

“Eventually” meaning you misspelled the new one, too? :-P

      • NuggetNugget

Don’t worry, some captcha just aren’t made for humans to solve.

  • JDub

    fackwors, you are a bot!

  • its me

    captcha wrong?…..fackwors

    • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

If i had the money i would try to get as many as possible…… Not saying hes rich but im sure hes got money to spare to try and get another.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I do, but it has a cracked back. I want a clean one.

      • ToddAwesome

        #firstworldproblems

      • Droidzilla

        Your N4 got fackwors’d.

  • Fadi Al-Mubarak

It’s a new record, worst buying experience I have ever had in my life

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

    That says “fackwors”.

    • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

i sense “fackwors” becoming the new droid-life meme ;)

      • http://twitter.com/AMPthe13th Adrian M. Petty

Something along the lines of “Ordering a Nexus 4 is hard as fackwors” perhaps?

      • EC8CH

I shall do everything in my power to make this a reality

        • fish1552

          #fackwors

          • Sirx

            I’m taking this.

          • enob

Think we can make it trend on google+? #fackwors

      • TheDrunkenClam

        You mad, fackwors?

      • LowCalGH

        Love it

      • fackwors

        Suddenly, my life has meaning.

  • ToddAwesome

    Keep doing you Google!

  • Michael Forte

This has got to be the worst handled product launch ever.

    • Owen Harvey

You seem to be forgetting the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon

      • Crazydog

At least you could buy those in brick-and-mortor stores where you couldn’t get server errors and the device in your hand wouldn’t disappear before you could pay for it.

        • duke69111

As the Verizon employee pulls it out of your hand and says Opps…Server Error…We are working to fix it…. :)

          • Crazydog

Then I throw $320 in cash and run out the door.

      • chris125

there was no problems getting the galaxy nexus though. It may have kept getting pushed back but didnt sell out and cause all these issues. Maybe this is a sign google cant handle sales on their site so should let the carriers do it.

      • hfoster52

Or they don’t have a GNex and aren’t reminded everyday of the no updates.

        • duke69111

There may not be many fast updates to it, but I got mine on release day at a Verizon store with no problems.

      • Dave

I don’t know about that. While the actual date of release, as it were, was insufferably delayed…it was really no hassle at all to get a device from Verizon once it was available for sale. Seeing how Verizon is experienced in these matters, that is hardly surprising. Google, on the other hand, has seemed to have not learned from its past mistakes.

    • EC8CH

Verizon Galaxy Nexus is a close second then.

  • http://twitter.com/TheMuffStuff Danny B

I got 2 pairs. you gotta keep clicking proceed and eventually itll go through.

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

But sometimes you cart empties when you press proceed then reload the page when/if you the error.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Tried that, no love.

      • http://twitter.com/TheMuffStuff Danny B

Gotta keep clicking bud, maybe its too late now but thats how most people got them.

        • Justin W

Same with the first time… I just kept rage-clicking Proceed to checkout and spamming F5 to refresh.

    • gallyjh

      Exactly what i did too.

    • YankInDaSouth

Yup, this is what I had to do … First time I got what is pictured above. Was lucky enough to be able to get another one in my cart. Let it sit there for a few minutes and was able to proceed.
Ships in 4-5 weeks though … Hope it makes it for Christmas :-

      • http://twitter.com/TheMuffStuff Danny B

My 16gb says 1-2 so lets hope thats true

        • Droidzilla

The 8GB says longer, but the 16GB says 1-2 weeks. Don’t know why people wouldn’t spend $50 more for double the memory, but I’m glad since I’d spend $50 for less wait time.

    • PyroHoltz

      “I got 2 pairs.”

      2 pairs…are you playing poker?

Does 2 pairs mean 4 phones? Hoarder!

      • http://twitter.com/TheMuffStuff Danny B

Sorry, used to buying shoes lol.

    • Droidzilla

      You dirty, dirty bastard.
