Here is the LG Optimus Nexus Sans Dummy Box, Does Sort of Look Like a Galaxy Nexus

The first pictures of what we are expecting to be the LG Nexus (LG-E960) appeared earlier this evening, giving us a glimpse of what Google has in store for November. Many of you were quick to point out the case surrounding it that seemed to be some sort of a dummy box, meant to disguise the device. Previous rumors had stated that the device actually looked more like a Galaxy Nexus in shape and size, but it was impossible to tell with that case around it. Well, until now.

A reader of ours found another set of pictures of the device on a Russian forum, sans dummy box. As you can see in the pictures above, it does carry a similar shape to the Galaxy Nexus with its rounded head and chin. The screen appears to be almost edge-to-edge though, and the back carriers the similar crystal backing of the Optimus G – the device that the Optimus Nexus is supposedly based off of.

From the About screen, we can see that the device is running JellyBeanMR1 and goes by the codename Mako, just like the device from earlier. The camera on the back isn’t branded with 8MP or 13MP, but we are expecting it to be one or the other, just like in the two Optimus G variants.

Not a bad looking phone from LG. What do you think?

Cheers Kidtronis!

  • ranger

weird that it says “with google” instead of just google like the previous nexuses, could be a hint to the new nexus program

    • NexusMan

was thinking the same thing about the Nexus program….cuz other phones have said “with Google,” but I believe none of them have been a Nexus.

  • C-Law

I’m sorry but this looks like a downgrade in appearance from my gnex. The bezel area below the screen appears to be larger than on the gnex. I definitely wanted to see this area shrunk some on the next nexus phone, not bigger

  • http://www.facebook.com/tyson.bash Tyson Bash

give me a nexus phone with an SD card slot please ?

  • ezpotato

ummm i’ll stay with my gnex until something that looks different or has less bezel comes out….. as a nexus… wow, i’m disappointed at the physical similarity.

  • greenbacks

I love the curved glass on the GNex, I will miss that. just give me better battery life and I would keep my GNex for ever. lets go moto razer HD Nexus!!!!!

  • E A butler

the next phone for me must….
    1-Be NEXUS
2- Have atleast 32gigs of storage
    3-have atleast 12mp camera
4-Not be wider than the current GalaxyNEXUS
5-Have a high capacity or replaceable battery

    Thanks!! Somoene make it happen!!!

  • Lakerzz

Anybody know the ‘history’ of LG’s radios? (Not a rhetorical question)

    • Diablo81588

Don’t you mean Qualcomm radios? :P

      • Lakerzz

        :) (half asleep)
        Actually, *WHOLE* asleep! :P

  • Nathan Corachea

idk but the flash seems huge to me for some reason. and idk i just hope it feels like a well built device in the hand.

  • shugaman

look at the top and bottom does not match….plus back phone cover….not real…

    • TheCheapGamer

      U blind?

  • shugaman

love DL but that is fake…real phone looks like:

    http://www.androidcentral.com/next-nexus-phone-lg-e960

    • TheCheapGamer

That phone has a case around it…like the old DL article posted.

    • descendency

Clearly you don’t know what “sans” means. The one you linked is in a dummy case (a fake way to hide what the phone looks like)

  • http://fabdroid.com Andrew Xie

The battery does not look to be removeable, and the top and bottom bezels are huge. If there’s a notification light on the bottom bezel, that’s cool. But the top bezel seems way too thick. The speaker grill is so thin, everything else up there is barren.

I’m pretty ambivalent about the back “bling”

  • EatUrCrap

I was completely against Samsung for Android phones until they stepped their game up with the Galaxy S II, and I’ve loved my Galaxy Nexus since launch day. But the #1 Android manufacturer I disliked the most was LG, although now they seem to be stepping their game up too. I’m looking forward to seeing if they can become successful again.

  • speraider430

After smashing the refresh key for Gnex news last year, I am looking forward to casually watching a nexus go from rumor to release

  • Samvelavich

Im just confused as to why they enlarged the bezel from the top and bottom of the phone… I’m loking at my GNexus right now and this one has a bigger bezel

    • Diablo81588

Part of engineering man lol. They didn’t just decide to make the top and bottom bigger for looks. Usually the antennas are housed in the top and bottom of the phone.

      • BTLS

Hopefully you’re right & they took advantage of the space…. Hopefully everyone’s wrong about LG sucking and they use this slightly bigger bezel to create a better signal than the Gnex. I don’t get dropped calls much but all I know is my friends’ vzw phones always seem to get better reception where ever we go, especially in bars for some reason…

    • Captain_Doug

      edit= NVM. Took another look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/larry.wei Larry Wei

    can’t…tell…if…battery…is…removable…sigh

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

I don’t get why everyone who dislikes the design is getting downvoted. Personally, I don’t like the design much either. Maybe seeing it from a different angle will change my opinion (like the S3: I initially hated its design, but I grew to love it), but for right now, this new Nexus looks decidedly unspectacular.

    • Diablo81588

      Complimentary down vote ;)

  • nightscout13

I don’t like the bling on the back.

    • Larizard

the bling on the back looks, hmm, what’s that word?

      TACKY.

      /hugsmyGNex

    • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

i like the bling coloring on the exterior.

    • flosserelli

It looks like something my 10-year old niece would buy. Perhaps LG/Google are trying to break into a new demographic.

  • joejoe5709

Cool. Now Samsung has someone other than Apple to sue. Lol. I kid I kid… looks great! I swore I would pinch my pennies and wait for the next next Nexus on my upgrade but this is really tempting!!

  • austing

I love this this time of year, nexus rumors all over and Christmas around the corner, great time to be an android fan

    • JustTrollin69

I was literally about to post the same thing.

  • Trueblue711

Not too sure what to think of the back of the phone. Looks a bit gaudy to me, but it could look awesome in person.

Also, why does it say “with Google” rather than just “Google” like on the Galaxy Nexus?

    • Aaron Fredricks

i was just about to comment this.

Nexus devices have never shown “with Google.” and that back is incredibly tacky (true LG style)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Schmucker/1498547350 Chris Schmucker

Im gonna miss the chin on the bottom of the phone. Said No one. Ever.

    • Captain_Doug

      I named it and everything…

    • r0lct

If there was no bezel to match the top on the bottom it would likely look ugly. Then you need a spot for the mic. I have a gnex and just think it would look funny with a no bottom bezel

  • Baconator

Why does it say “with Google” and not “Nexus” or “Google” maybe its fake.

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Almost certainly placeholder text. The GNex’s first leaks had ‘with Google’ too.

    • jimmyk0789

Thats what Im saying this makes we think there’s more then one nexus phone coming if their using “with Google” instead of just “Google” the only phones that have had with Google and kinda like a nexus with stock android are (g1, droid 1, g2, g2x)

    • http://www.JWesCampbell.com/ Wes Campbell

my gsm gnex just has “Google”. no nexus or anything…

  • dieringer scott

    BLEGH no amoled..

  • shugAMAN

FAKE GUYS LOOK AT THE TOP PART OF PHONE….

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

      What about it?

  • k_nivesout

Sexy. Idk about you guys, I like the back though. Also the small and minimal camera and LED.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Wonder what the back feels like… Isn’t there another LG phone with the exact back?…. I think the G has a smooth back

      • http://twitter.com/turdbogls Turdbogls

YES, the optimus G has the same back. from what i have heard, it is glass, and smooth, and under the right lighting, you get to see the “flek” used to get that textured look. i personally like the materials used in this phone, but the overall look is not as nice as the current Gnex IMO. not a fan of the earpiece being all the way at the top, not a fan of the screw holes (although it looks like build quality was stepped up) and not a fan of the camera and LED placement and look….but thats just me. the specs alone make me want to ditch my gnex and pick it up though. but that wont be happening.

    • Captain_Doug

I don’t like the back, looks bedazzled. Rest of the phone looks great.

  • tharealoc

ok google, tell me it will be sold in the play store and offered on verizon for $299 and I’ll spending my money faster than, well, i don’t know what to compare it to, but it will be fast.

    • michael arazan

Seriously! Crossing fingers so hard they are creating stress fractures.

    • vyperbc

faster than i just jizzed myself?

    • MikeCiggy

faster then the dude jumping out of space today?

    • Steve Benson

Verizon will not get this phone. Pay your ETF and leave the prison that is Verizon forever. GSM is the only way to go from this point forward.

      • Greg Buxton

I think you mean LTE is the only way to go from this point forward.

We just need carriers and phones to get to supporting VoLTE.

      • http://www.JWesCampbell.com/ Wes Campbell

        AMEN.

      • HueThree

        Plus a million

      • john

Yea let me leave the only carrier with significant LTE coverage for one with barely any.. or none. lol

    • JoeInMO

My friend at Google tells me there will be no more Nexus phones on Verizon. GSM only.

      • CampyGuy

        Well, fsck that.

      • smwandrie93

My friend in England told me he was the King, the only difference between you and I is that I didn’t believe my friend

      • Jonathan Ofalla

I hope that’s not the case. It’s a bad business decision considering iPhone was once GSM-only then found increased success adding CDMA variants. Making GSM-only Nexus phones is pretty much the opposite and would decrease Sales.

    • chris125

I’d even pay $399 if they sold it through the play store for verizon. But with how anal verizon is sadly can’t see that happening, they have to have their hands in everything.

      • AndroidUser00110001

By federal law Verizon can not restrict devices on their LTE network. Part of the agreement when they leased the spectrum from the government.

        • chris125

But they can on their 3G network so I’m sure they would use some excuse

          • bitpimpin

here’s to voLTE getting here this year!

  • http://twitter.com/GutterIsATool Chilli

I just hope they release one with Verizon radios, but still only sell it through the Play Store. I would be more than willing to pay full price to keep Big Red’s hands off of it (besides, I probably have to pay full price going forward to keep my unlimited LTE).

  • austing

    Looks good I’m on bored

    • JustTrollin69

      board.

  • Diablo81588

Not bad. Diggin’ the edge to edge look. Just hope its not too wide.

    • Mapekz

I think the edge to edge will make it less wide; the screen should be similar to the Nexus’s in dimensions (might be 4.7 instead of 4.65 but the device should still be less wide).

      • Diablo81588

Do we know the screen size yet? I read this site daily, but could’ve missed it lol

        • Mapekz

I think we know the Optimus G is 4.7 so there’s a good chance this is the same, maybe 4.65 to match the Galaxy Nexus. I don’t think they’ll go with a 4.8″ or higher if the HTC Nexus phablet rumors are true (to differentiate more between the devices).

  • Mapekz

Is that both a headphone AND line in jack on the bottom? Also is the device curved?

    • DainLaguna

looks curved to me. i guess they want it to be a nexus hallmark

    • descendency

It’s two headphone jacks so you can share.

    • KRS_Won

I think the two bottom holes are screw holes possibly.

    • thedonxr

They are speaker holes I bet.

  • TT

Seems like MR1 is the abbv of “minor release 1″
    4.1.1 > 4.2

    • JordanMcRae

Ya they say Google doesn’t add version numbers til the very end.

    • vidoardes

      MR means Maintenance Release

  • DainLaguna

found on a russian forum? man you guys are hardcore! nerds have so much time on their hands

  • Fredy Nativi

    that looks great…
The back looks to still have the protective plastic on it. but man it looks awesome. We have to remember that it’s an LG phone made for Google. Not just another phone is a Nexus and it will be great. No matter who makes it.

    • http://twitter.com/jkc120 Josh Carroll

I just hope it comes to Verizon…

      • DainLaguna

me too…though i doubt it. i recently asked a buddy of mine that i work with who is an ex verizon employee about how the nexus launch was handled, since it was a stock google device and had no (well not really) vzw bloatware on it…he said the ‘selling feature’ was the face unlock.

THAT was the big deal they made out of it.

        • Trueblue711

That doesn’t make too much sense.. the bloatware isn’t really a selling feature on any other Android phone, so how would the lack of it make them promote face unlock?

          • DainLaguna

Maybe it was a poor choice of words… i didnt mean bloatware was a selling point, but stock android in a world of skinned phones shoulda been big for them

        • Mapekz

The Nexus came out when the DROID RAZR was being marketed to hell. Verizon wanted to push the RAZR over the Nexus due to the whole DROID trademark they spent so much money to license. This will continue until their license ends or OEMs stop wanting to brand their devices as such and only then Verizon will make a bigger deal out of Nexus devices.

  • duke69111

The phone jack’s on top…pow..head exploded.

    • descendency

The phone jack’s on the top and bottom… pow… head exploded.

      • michael arazan

It’s like Deja, Deja, Deja, Deja, Deja Vu

    • Ash Hanna

Hahahahahahahahaha i Friggin Love This Comment So.Much!!!!

    • John

“Excuse me, are you saying POW?”

    • anezarati

why are there 2 jacks on the bottom and one on top?

nm – saw on another site that those on the bottom are probably screw holes

    • gooner13

i much prefer the jack on top. not sure why people like when it is placed on the bottom. completely screws up cradle placement options.

      • eagletrippin

I think it’s only natural that when people put their phones into their pockets, that it goes in head (top end) first. If you ever listen to music on your phone through headphones, then having the jack on the bottom allows you to slide your phone into your pockets the same way. It’s only natural…

        • gooner13

i see what you are saying, but we will have to agree to disagree. i put my phone in my pocket bottom end first. and i use headphones in my phone every day of the week (howard stern, podcasts, etc at work) and if the plug was at the bottom i would not be able to use portrait mode on my dock and forced to use landscape, which i hate.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500698751 Paul Hansen

I’m also the same. I slide my phone in bottom first… I’d be curious to do a poll to see what people actually do… Wait, I can do that! Gotta love being an admin of an android site ;)

  • DainLaguna

oh wow…daddy like. i retract my ‘looks like an iphone’ comments. :)

  • http://twitter.com/AndroidMinis Android Minis

I like the front, the back not so much

    • Ash Hanna

PUt A Case On It Lol

  • Chaz Harrison

Yes it looks like the Galaxy Nexus. So what! Now LG can be sexy too.

    • Mapekz

A lot of Galaxy Nexus owners, myself included, voted on polls that all they really want from this year’s Nexus is a Galaxy Nexus 2.0 and I feel LG has delivered above. No complaints assuming the camera is much better and internals significantly higher specced.

    • C-Law

Happy! We may see Samsung sue lg now

      • Josh Nichols

Samsung doesn’t see LG as a threat. That will likely never happen.

      • RellikZephyr

My guess is google wanted that look

  • http://www.facebook.com/timothy.warne Tim Warne

I like except for the glitter backing.

  • Andrew Remmers

Hoping its not plastic I see.

    • descendency

No, the back is full of small diamonds. This phone will retail for 599,999.99.

Now that looks sexy……. shut up and take my money.

But on the back it says: “with Google” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Manny

On my VZW Galaxy Nexus, it doesn’t mention Google at all :(

      • Sstang2006

That’s why our VZW “Nexus” is not a real nexus. A real nexus gets updates strait from google and does not need approval of anyone ;)

    • Alan Paone

I’m really hoping that the “with” implies that this isn’t a nexus.

      • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Why? This looks like an excellent device.

on the GNex’s first leaks last year it had ‘with Google’, so I’m pretty sure it’s a placeholder.

    • Sstang2006

I noticed the same thing. All previous Nexus says: “From” not “With”. Hopefully this is not the real Nexus because I’m not buying another LG device ever.

      • http://twitter.com/RonJigga Roshan John

What’s your experience been with LG devices? I’m asking because I’ve never had one, and I’m surprised that Google decided to sponsor this relatively small company in the smartphone arena.

        • KleenDroid

LG has had some real duds lately. But they have also had some great successes. There is good that they can put out a great product.

        • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh Tripathy

Its a hit & miss case with LG. Although their build quality is better than the likes of Samsung, their devices in the last year or two have lacked any inspiration or marketing hype. Many people claim that LG makes awful phones, that’s not entirely true. What has sucked for LG is their lame software and iffy updates. This being a Nexus, none of that will affect it. If the Optimus G is anything to go by, LG are making a serious effort to get back in the game and I personally think this Nexus is going to be rather sweet.

    • Steve Benson

Would you prefer it said “with Apple?”

  • Eddie Ramirez

Kind of looks like the Nitro

  • burntcookie90

    That backing…ugh.

    • Fredy Nativi

the backing looks to still have the protective plastic on it

      • burntcookie90

One of those pictures looks like the backing isn’t there. I don’t like that silly digital-esque pixelly looking thing they’ve done.

        • DainLaguna

      • kidtronic

        …eew dawg. eew

  • Raloc

This looks just like a step backwards in terms of design from the Galaxy Nexus. I guess it’s just LG keeping their position of only being able to produce products that look like knock-offs of others.

    • DainLaguna

dont be silly. the design looks more polished and less plasticky than the gnex does. way more svelte too. and i’ bet it’ll feel nicer in hand.

    • UrDoGG

Which phone is this a knock-off of? To me it falls in line with the very distinguishable characteristics of the last two Nexus’s.

  • TheRobotCow

    Looking good!

  • http://www.keithbluhm.com/ Keith

Oh God please get rid of that glittery battery door.

    Otherwise it’s… not horrendous.

    • DainLaguna

not horrendous? just wondering, what on earth could they have done to keep you from saying something like that? it looks like a polished galaxy nexus with better definition in the overall shape. it doesnt look any ‘uglier’ or ‘prettier’ than say, the one x or s3

      • http://www.keithbluhm.com/ Keith

It looks very fragile, like if I don’t put enough attention into holding it I may drop it.
