Question of the Day: What Tethering App are You Using With Jelly Bean?

Now that most of the Galaxy Nexus owners in the building are all running official Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), the reports of “FoxFi no longer works!” are starting to flood in. We aren’t exactly sure what changed in Jelly Bean to cause some tethering apps to quit working, FoxFi being the most notable, but that’s the card we were dealt. So rather than spending the next 3 days testing each and every tethering app, we thought we would turn directly to the DL community, a group of people that probably tether a heck of a lot more than us home office dwellers, and ask which app they picked up?

We gave you a wireless tethering option that doesn’t require root from SVTP, but it’s also $15. ClockworkMod Tether should work just fine, but it’s a USB tethering service rather than wireless. Barnacle is a free wireless option, but it requires root.

What tethering app are you currently using? Anything in particular standing out as being reasonably priced and stable? Please share your recommendations in the comments.

Seems to me that my unlimited plan is requiring me to pay for subscription ( I think the shared plans won’t require this)……I’ve used foxfi and SVTP before JB update with no problem…….I downloaded Fattin hotspot toggle widget and it bypassed the subscription notice and allowed SVTP to connect………working fine.

I am not rooted and I use my WI-FI tether on my phone I am tethered into AT&T u verse Wi-Fi. What is BugBeast? Is that a rooted or non rooted? I also am Unlimited right now and hope to keep it! I came into Verizon wireless when the switched from Altel to Verizon, I have been a happy VZW customer until they threatened to lose my unlimited! I want to switch but I am sending emails to try and get us old Verizon customers to be able to keep my unlimited no harm in trying right?

I’m using FoxFi because it still works on Gingerbread.

    • michael arazan

FoxFi is great on ICS too, I’ll have to try it on JB. FoxFi FTW

helpful, as the post is about tethering apps on Jelly Bean.

  • Rob

Downloaded TetherShortCutWidget from the store. Put it on the homescreen, and it activates the built in tethering app and bypasses the subscription part.

  • Menger40

I use bugless beast + native tethering.

    • xxdesmus

      same, works like a champ.

  • OreoMan

I’m using SVTP, but I got it for $4.99 back in the day when they first pushed it out. Lucky me, because this app has been solid and connects to everything!

Whatever is baked into the OS. Using the Google Play Nexus on Tmo has it’s benefits.

  • Chris Hollenbeck

Tethering anything with my Thunderbolt would likely create a wormhole. Has anyone had any success with the Thunderbolt and tethering (non-rooted phone)?

  • Scott

Prior to a custom ROM, I rocked Easy Tether by mobile stream. Totally worth the $9.99 if you’re not rooted.

  • D4niel

Why use a tethering app? I’ve got an unrooted Galaxy Nexus running 4.1.1 on T-Mobile and just use the built-in tethering features. Works great.

  • Alan Paone

I use the built-in Cyanogenmod one. I have a toggle for it in my notification shade and my N7 remembers the network, so to switch between browsing on the Gnex and the N7, I just flick a switch and shove my phone in my pocket. Nice and seamless.

  • Stevedub40

Built-in tether app with root. Works great!

  • joejoe5709

I’m not sure who makes it, but Wifi Tether is the name. I’ve haven’t tried any others, but this one works pretty well.

  • Nate

Stock, dude. Running CNA v3.5, stock works well.

  • DroidVader

Bluetooth D2 to xoom, no need to tether. New contrt tethering is free so who cares.

I’ve had good experiences with Barnacle all the way back to the Hero days. It works well.

That being said, the native tethering functionality works fine. Cheers.

  • Br_d

I use EasyTether for USB tethering on my gingerbread device. It works well… I wonder if it would work on JB?

  • http://profiles.google.com/chuckg73 Charles Gallagher

I am running stock Jelly bean browser and have used and been using SVTP (paid version) without any issues for well over a year on both OS’s ICS and Jelly Bean. Oh yeah and it also works if you are rooted. Very stable and have never had an issue with it. I use it all day at work when I take my Nexus 7 to work with me or my Chromebook.

  • Devin Cawdrey

The one build into JB – I don’t pay extra for tethering

  • codelinx

wifi tether because i cant stand not having control of my tether and who is connected

  • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

Some people seem to be saying that the stock wifi on a non-rooted G-Nex works because “VZW doesn’t charge for it anymore”. Can someone expand on that? When I try to enable it through settings, it “checks my subscription status” and tells me to call verizon customer service to subscribe… I will root eventually, but my routine is to stay stock for a year then root and play for another year…

    • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

      Anyone?

      • DrunkenUlgy

Unlimited users aren’t included in the good graces of the lawsuit, you have to be on a “usage-based pricing plan” to be covered.
        Here’s the article I got that from… http://goo.gl/KTrQw
I’m using Easy WiFi Tethering until they fix Foxfi, ad supported, which blows and the upload isnt as quick but it got me back online. link here… http://goo.gl/WLd8W

    • Keii Graham

      Same thing for me.

    • aye_winchell

i dont think it is enabled on verizon if you still have your unlimited plan, at least not yet, i thought they were being forced to offer it, and i know that on the shared plans its free, but i dont think i have it either and im still on unlimited till i die.

  • deltaechoe

I just use the native tethering, it works just fine

  • George Fayad

I use the tethering app built into AOKP. It’s free and works perfect. If your phone isn’t hacked, then don’t complain about not having free tethering.

  • John Simonelli

I used to use WiFi Tether on my Gnex, but on Jelly Bean I have been using the built-in tether on AOKP Build 3 Rom.
