Video: Chameleon Launcher Up and Running on Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean

YouTube Preview Image

The popular, yet still to be released, Android launcher called Chameleon is shown off on a Nexus 7 running Jelly Bean. With that Tegra 3 chip inside, it’s running smooth and beautifully which makes the wait for release even more unbearable. No date has been given yet on launch, but you can pre-order the skin from their official website for $10.

Release the darn app already.

Cheers Eric!

On the website it says, ”
App will be available for download in August”. Just a little heads up.

  • Adrian

Why are people hating on a launcher? Don’t like it, don’t support it! The point of this launcher is to make android more stylish. If you havn’t noticed android looks like a dogs barf at the moment unless you go into custom roms and customise it to your taste. Widgets just don’t go together nicely and a sea of random icons just doesn’t work. This makes the home screen experience a unique one where all your information is relevent depending on your current situation. Eg at home relaxing or at work checking emails. And did I mention how goood looking the UI is?

  • nhizzat

Might have to hit him up to see when it’ll be available on the Play Store. That $25 credit from the Nexus 7 is gonna come in handy :D

    • EvanTheGamer

Already used $1 of my $25 credit on Dead Trigger!

      • ChristopherLeMeilleur

        WORTH IT

        • EvanTheGamer

SURE is! That game rocks! I just wish it didn’t have the “in-game purchase” model. I’d have easily paid $4.99 or higher if everything in the game was included. Ah well…still a pretty awesome experience though.

          • ChristopherLeMeilleur

Meh, I don’t care for sidegrade guns. I hear ya, but I thought it was a steal at $1.

          • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, absolutely, still definitely a great game and can’t go wrong at only a dollar.

  • nhizzat

Perhaps it is nothing new, it’s just far more refined, more stylish, and more customizable. Almost MetroUI-like. Widgets are seamless unlike any other current launcher available for Android.

    Tribe!

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

    lol @ $10

    • nhizzat

And I think it’s worth every bit of that.

      • EvanTheGamer

        Agreed!

        • Ryan

          same

  • Davros

what was that home/work button all about? For changing phone set up between the 2 places?

    • Jamal Stephenson

this is from the kickstarter project page: At the office, Chameleon can recognize when you are at your office based on a GPS location and display a Work Home Screen to display things like your email inbox, tasks, calendar and your latest documents.

I am not seeing too much that couldn’t be achieved with other things. I like it and it looks slick, but the layout doesn’t quite make sense to me. Why is Brave listed above the weather? I don’t understand the layout. Seems like a lot of elements are duplicated across multiple screens. For instance the binder with the old lady drawing is included on two pages.

    • Scott Willenborg

but… but… but… you can have a drawing of an old lady that YOU know… ooooooooooo!

      • http://twitter.com/Jason13L Jason Lassourreille

That was a strong sales pitch, but I think I am going to stick with stock or Nova.

        • Charlie Mathews

“Brave” doesn’t have to be there. In-fact, none of the widgets need to be there. The layouts and content are completely customize-able. That’s the whole idea of this launcher. Plus, it looks far more pleasing and professional than just about every other launcher on the market.

Of course, you could download 10 other apps to achieve a less-practical and far less useful copy of the features in Chameleon.

The multiple screens are completely customize-able. If there is duplicate, it is because the screens are set to display according to the time of day and location so you get different views throughout the day.

Chameleon is the epitome of why android is amazing. The customization. If you didn’t understand what I explained and why it’s useful, please stick with stock.

    • r0lct

IMHO this looks like a week of sizzle at most. Then you’re going to be as happy as the person running stock or another (less expensive) launcher.

  • Johnny Rocker

says on their website “App will be available for download in August”

    • Scott Willenborg

I think that it’s out in August for the people who backed it on KS to beta test… I thought they were shooting for a Play store release in September.

  • EvanTheGamer

That homescreen launcher looks slick as hell and is easily worth the $10 price tag.

      • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, apologies, got ahead of myself actually, lol…I now remember seeing a few posts about it. Then disregarded it as I didn’t own a tablet at the time and didn’t even know about my future tab, the Nexus 7.

        • Scott Willenborg

          I’ll see if I can hook you up… I did pledge $1,000,000!!*

          * Canadian… so about $5.

          • EvanTheGamer

            Hahhahaha!

    • nhizzat

I’ll plunk $10 down to use this on my Xoom and Nexus 7

  • teng247

cant wait to put this on my tablets. Been waiting for this since we first saw it on DL

  • Stinker

Looks a lot like every other ICS and JB launcher.

    • Scott Willenborg

That’s true… except for the fact that it doesn’t look anything like every other ICS or JB launcher.

      • EvanTheGamer

        LOL!

      • SirSoloDolo

        #Winning

      • Hunter

        Very Nice! Go Cyclones!

      • Stinker

Maybe you can help me spot the differences.

        • Scott Willenborg

I think you could start by hitting the “play” button on the video…

          • Stinker

Are you talking about the different screen transitions or the different widgets? I watched the thing and I’ll repeat, it looks like every other launcher.

          • EvanTheGamer

            You’re hilarious.

          • Scott Willenborg

Just out of curiosity… my morbid curiosity… what launcher do you run now and/or are you from the future?

          • EvanTheGamer

Come on, stop that…I am about to fall off my seat…

          • Stinker

I’m using Nova Launcher. Used Launcher Pro for a long time. Tried a few others. Seriously, what part of that video shows something that can’t be done in every other launcher?

          • Scott Willenborg

I’m the same as you… used Launcher Pro for quite some time and now rock Nova. Plus I’m in Nebraska… you want to go to lunch today?

          • Stinker

Eastern Iowa. Probably wouldn’t work out. Plus my launcher can’t display a calendar widget and I’d forget.

          • Scott Willenborg

            HA! Sarcasm… I caught it you sly dog… or hawk… or what-ever…

          • Stinker

I’m serious. That’s like a 4 hour drive or more.

          • Hunter

How about you give us some examples of where you have seen such functionality in other launchers…

          • Stinker

Tell me specifically what functionality you’re talking about and I will. If you mean widgets, icons, homescreens, long press to move things, pressing the search button to bring up Google Now, pressing the browser icon to bring up a browser, etc, all of them.

          • Hunter

But in the same launcher? The value proposition here is all of this rolled into one seamless user experience and nothing like it currently exists.

          • Stinker

            What launcher DOESN’T do
widgets, icons, homescreens, long press to move things, pressing the search button to bring up Google Now, pressing the browser icon to bring up a browser, etc?

          • Scott Willenborg

Okay, I’m going on faith that you just don’t see any difference and you’re not just pulling our collective chains and giggling like a school boy looking at the bra section of the JC Pennys catalog…

By your definition, my lifted, modified, rock crawling Jeep is the same thing as every other vehicle out on the road… including VW Bugs and Radio Flyer wagons. It’s HOW you do things and what functionality it has that make everything unique.

This new launcher is unique in how it does things. If you can’t see that then it’s time to stop licking the lead paint off of your Lite-Brite.

            Meant with fellowship,
            Scott

          • Stinker

I don’t want an analogy. Why can’t you give me a single example of what is new in this launcher?

          • Scott Willenborg

You got 1 minute and 8 seconds of examples above these posts…

          • Stinker

0:00-0:07: Showing a pretty generic home screen
            0:07-0:09: Generic app drawer
            0:09-0:12: Home screen chooser
            0:12-0:23: Moving icons around
0:23-End: Clicking on widgets and icons to open apps and using them
My OG Droid did that the day I bought it.

          • nhizzat

JC Penny? Cmon man, Victoria’s Secret catalog is where it’s at!

          • EvanTheGamer

Keep ‘em coming, I am cracking up here!

        • nhizzat

Opening your eyes would be a good start

          • EvanTheGamer

            Definitely a good start!

      • Mike

        I lol’d

    • r0lct

You should have stated: This looks difference but really does what every other 3rd party launcher does that are much cheaper. Then I think you would have been more on point.

    • rockstar323

Even though your opinion doesn’t seem to be favored I agree with you. What’s the difference in just putting different widgets on different home screens in nova and switching back and forth between them when you need them?

    • http://twitter.com/giroguy Ian Shaw

What makes it different and what that video doesn’t show is that based on rules that you set up based on wifi time and gps, Chameleon will display the home screen that is most relevant to you based on the rules. Check out chameleon.teknision.com for a better idea.

  • Sven Enterlein

I’m wondering if the Kickstarter backers will receive the launcher before it lands on the market or if it shares the Nexus 7’s fate that the preorders arrive AFTER regular orders…

    • EvanTheGamer

If you missed out on the Chameleon Kickstarter campaign, you can still pre-order a copy of Chameleon and get early access.

the stupid brothers rappin was not needed

    • nsauce7

Brothers? U know u want to use the N word with that comment huh

    • nhizzat

      The bigoted comments are unnecessary

    • Greyhame

Silly me, I thought there was no way for you to get more annoying. Boy was I wrong. You know what’s not needed? Your constant, asinine remarks in this otherwise interesting comment section.
