Verizon Sends Texts to DROID RAZR Owners, Says That Android 4.0 is Coming Soon

Motorola and Verizon have exactly 15 days left to upgrade the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX to Ice Cream Sandwich in order to make their self-imposed deadline of Q2. Through a text message that is going out to RAZR owners today, we can assume that they must be getting close. Big Red is informing owners of these devices that Android 4.0 will be here soon and that their current Mobile IM app will have to be replaced:

Free Verizon Message: Your phone will soon be upgraded to Android 4.0. At that time we will remove your Verizon Wireless Mobile IM app because it is not supported in Android 4.0. Please download a new instant messaging app to use IM on your phone. Thank you for using Mobile IM!

With a couple of leaked builds having made their way to handsets over the last month or so, we know that they are at least attempting to work their magic in hopes of getting it ready in time.  I’m sure you are more excited about the new Mobile IM app, right?

Cheers Jerry, Antony, Leland, and Nick!

    Never got that text

  • Jocelyn8288

I have not gotten that text

  • http://www.facebook.com/wgustafsonjr Wade Gustafson Jr

i havent gotten this message either

  • mcdonsco

I know, seems stupid, but in all the leaks (including the one I’m running now, 210) the news widget is gone…I’m REALLY hoping in the final OTA its there…best news widget out there hands down!

  • mcdonsco

I have not received this text message yet either, however my maxx was just replaced a couple days ago and I just installed the 210 leak of ice cream sandwich…could that be why I did not get to text?

  • Johnny Fairplay

F this ugly ass phone, when is the update for the Rezound coming!?!?!

  • Maggs

I’ve never used this app. I just text

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Charlene-May/1403976001 Charlene May

I already have a different IM app that I use. So bring Ice Cream on

  • dbam987

How to kill time while waiting for ICS to arrive on the RAZR: wait for the text about the upcoming update.

  • daniel.archibald33

I actually recieved this message on my HTC Rezound today

  • Big_EZ

All of the manufactures do this, they are always going to release updates on tgeir latest and greatest first.

  • http://twitter.com/en7gm4 Eduardo stanley

i got a text from verizon saying going to upgrade me to 4.1 jellybean and send over two hookers and a pool of jello

  • picaso86

    I just received this message…Yay!

  • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

HA! I was thinking that after the two G’s in ‘fuckingg’. Angry person is angry!!

  • OhAaron

Nooo! Not my favorite app! ;)

  • Alexander Garcia

    LOL i was just gonna ask… U MAD BRO? =P =)

  • Liderc

Glad to hear. Was just telling my dad(Has a Maxx) that ICS should be coming soon. I actually like using his Maxx, nice phone.

    • LiterofCola

Who are you, and what have you done with Liderc?!

      • Liderc

I can dislike multiple things about a device, doesn’t mean I hate the device. I wouldn’t choose it over my phone, but it’s a solid device. For instance, the only reason I told him to get the Razr Maxx was because I know he’s away from a charger all day, so the battery was essential. Had he not had that problem, I would have told him to get a Nexus 100%.

  • Alexander Garcia

I got the text!!! ICS comin’ soon baby! =)

    • sgtguthrie

I wouldn’t get too excited. I got a text about gingerbread for my HTC Blunderbolt 1 month before they pushed the update…

  • Taylor Smith

    VERIZON

YOU ARE TOYING WITH MY EMOTIONS

  • http://twitter.com/AllenGeorge Allen George

I can’t believe they are rolling this out with the state of things on the leaked updates (the latest one wasn’t built long enough ago for them to really have fixed a bunch of issues in the interim). There are so many games that don’t work its silly, and there are oddities with the battery information (especially after a reboot) as well as problems with the screen staying on even though it should automatically turn off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

Screen staying on? Screebl, would fix that, which it’s an app I have been using since my OG droid. Anyone who owns an android phone should be using it. It keeps your screen on in use, and turns it off when it’s not. It is a smart app for a smartphone.

    • mcdonsco

I’ve been running the 210 leak for a few days and have zero problems with it

  • Hmm….

Oh look, a post about the RAZR. Calling all Gnex trolls, calling all Gnex trolls.

Got this text a few times this morning. Makes ICS sound pretty imminent. YAY! I wonder if this will even get the normal soak test, since the last one got so public.

  • Darster

So its still at least 2 weeks away if they are telling people to find a new IM app. More likely its a 30 day notice. Sigh, the wait continues.

  • kaufkin

not withholding the update to ensure 100% bloatware compatibility? what IS this world coming to? :-D

  • http://twitter.com/STEV3_TC Steve de la Prida

Lets see if Moto/Verizon can release this thing in 15 days. After how many leaked builds and false release dates will we finally have ICS

  • Drew

    Didnt get a text?

  • okkkkk

amateur question. but is mobile IM the app used for all texting? lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

How I feel about Nexus users who talk trash about other AMAZING ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY that are not their own. (I mean come on, we HAVE more advanced communicators than Star Trek ever imagined!)

  • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

I’d expect the soak test messages to go out early/mid next week, actual soak on Friday. then a release the following Wednesday, the 27th. They seem to like Wednesdays.

  • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

I am just glad they are within their timeline. However I have not received this text as of yet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chuckn0804 Charles Nicholson

    What about the Bionic?

    • nwd1911

      LOL

    • Big_EZ

Well since they said it would release Q3 I imagine you’ll see ICS for the Bionic within 3.5 months

  • Nemesis099

Still debating on getting the RAZR Maxx or the Samsung Galaxy SIII. I’m leaning toward the Galaxy but I know a few that have the RAZR Maxx that love the battery life.

Any opinions on here? I’m moving from a rooted Droid X with a custom ROM.

    • http://twitter.com/jownzy jownzy

Really enjoying the MAXX. Just swtiched from the X a couple days ago. I’ve charged the battery once. I also used an extra upgrade to pre-order the SGIII at the discounted price. I’d like to sell both of them to get the DROID HD when it comes out.

    • Droidzilla

Love love love my RAZR, but I would go with the SGSIII if I were you.

    • DoctorOta

I upgraded to my RAZR maxx from my DROID x and absolutely love it. Ill go through a day of normal use starting around 9 and put in on the charger around 12 pm with 40-50 % battery left. Or if I’m using it heavily it’ll be around 5%. Its a great phone from my experiences and ICS will only make it better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

I came from Rooted Droid X as well. It was hard to give up my X but it just was not making the cut anymore and I had to get into my new phone before Tiered Data was forced upon us. My choice was between the Maxx and the Gnex. I have never been steered wrong by Motorola, and Samsung phones I have had had issues in the past. Strike one for Samsung. The switch between the X and Maxx was slick and seamless. I did not lose any information, all my contacts are saved to Google, and everything else I could use backup/restore on. I travel a lot, so the radio issue with the Gnex was a problem for me. It has supposedly since been fixed, but I have never ONCE had an issue with dropped calls, even when driving 80 on the highway across the country. The battery life was also a lifesaver on several occasions for me when I would forget my charger, or have a long day away from power. The screen is better than the X but not quite as nice as the Gnex, which is really negligible for me, since I don’t generally use this as a main source of entertainment. The choice is ultimately up to you, and if you don’t mind not having ICS quite yet, the Maxx is a solid choice.

    • MKader17

I just went the same situation buying one for my mom. I really liked the increased battery life but the SIII does have a battery the same size as my G-Nex that I can get over 24 hours with.

Another factor is the SIII was designed from day 1 with ICS in mind, the Maxx was not. I really didn’t care too much about the screen but after using the Maxx in the store for a while I pulled out my G-Nex and I immediately noticed how much better my screen looked.

Also, I’m really interested in the small extra features of the SIII, I feel they are something that someone can easily use without much setup time or learning curve. On the other hand, I don’t see my mom getting much use out of Motocast or Smart Actions. Also, those are things that can easily be achieved in other ways.

  • chris125

Wow they are removing one of the bloat apps? Are you sure this wasn’t another carrier and not Verizon? Lol

    • Taylor Smith

Don’t worry, they’ll toss on a few different revisions of the Blockbuster app no one used.

  • mikeGsays

Message actually reads: PLEASE don’t give up on us! Verizon executives are made up of a bunch of lowly bastards who’s favorite word is BLOAT, but there’s no reason that while you’re suffering from not having the latest and greatest on your NEW PHONE, you should ditch us for any other carrier!

  • ddevito

And in a few weeks the GNex will be on Jelly Bean

    • Big_EZ

Just like it got the 4.0.4 update right when it was available?

      • ddevito

I own a GNex so I do it myself. Will NEVER wait for Verizon. Ever.

        Jelly Bean here we come!!!!!

        • Big_EZ

The RAZR won’t be far behind the Gnex getting Jelly Bean (unless the RAZR HD is released before Jelly Bean) unofficially. I’ve ran ICS on my RAZR Maxx since I got it in February.

  • John

Yea, but you will still have blur!! I switch the Galaxy Nexus and love it. It is currently stock with ICS on it. IT runs soo smooth. Glad I switched. All the reports about ICS being the best OS is true. I love IT!!

    • http://twitter.com/BriCo84 Brian Cohen

I honestly don’t see why everyone hates on the latest Moto Blur. It is actually really nice. they add some useful things. The only drawback I see is the bloatware which is easily removed with rooting and a script…

I love MotoBlur and Moto Build quality. I am a firm believer that first and foremost, my phone needs to work as a PHONE. So if I make a call, I want to make sure I can hear the person clearly, and they can hear me.

How’s that radio on the Nexus working out for ya?

      • jak_341

Nexus radio is BETTER than Razr. Newer chipset. The whole worse signal issue is blown out of proportion.

        • Droidzilla

The GNex is an awesome phone, but the radios on the RAZR are better. They’re the same OMAP4 SoC (GNex is a little newer; 4600 vs. 4400, iirc), but the LTE radios on the RAZR are custom designed by Motorola (the rest are Qualcomm, I believe; the GNex has a Qualcomm LTE radio and the RAZR a Motorola one).

        • http://twitter.com/RichWentz Rich Wentz

Good try jak but your wrong. Just because it is newer does not mean it is better.

    • venimdenim

      Galaxt Nexus is garbage…No comparison

      • rick

        Shit yes…

      • rick

It sure is… compared to the razr

    • Big_EZ

Your right about ICS being the best OS yet, I’ve been running it since I got my RAZR Maxx back in Febuary, without blur.

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

When my Charge crapped out, I had a choice between the OG Razr and GNex. Very difficult, but ultimately I think Motorola will do me right.

      • Droidzilla

I chose the OG RAZR over the GNex and would probably do it again. I just don’t ROM, anymore.

    • mustbepbs

Why must every GNex user turn a RAZR article into a pissing match? And vise versa? Why does every article about Android have at least one comment of some guy saying how much he loves his RAZR MAXX? We get it. Just shut up already.

      • FurthestPrism

My RAZR,MAXX is awesome. 1.5 days average between charges? I say yes. and if ICS gives more life, I’ll take it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

It is not every Gnex user, it is a select few who think that they are better. I tried both phones and chose the Maxx because it fit what I needed better.

      • sgtguthrie

A few of them seem to need to justify their purchases. Bashing Moto makes them feel better I guess ;-)

I still want them to unlock their bootloaders obviously, but I’m getting a Maxx to secure unlimited data for 2 years. Unfortunately, I can’t preorder the Galaxy S3 with an M2 upgrade (Managers early upgrade) :-(

  • westau

I haven’t gotten this text yet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/steven.bobulsky Steve Bobulsky

Does it matter if you are stock and rooted?

      • Maggs

I haven’t received a text either, just upgraded to the Maxx a month ago

        • michael arazan

Wow, this is epic, verizon actually said that they are working on an update to a phone before it comes out, this is a first.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=635525837 Mitchell Mellin

Still eagerly awaiting the actual release of the update. Will be nice!!

  • Detonation

All of you complain about how long the ICS update has taken, but in terms of all users (not just the online/dev community), I bet you more people will complain about the IM app missing compared to the number of people happy they got the upgrade. A lot of the smartphone owners I know don’t even know (or care) what version of Android they have.

    • Michael Schnider

      100% true.
Verizon: Thank you for calling Verizon how can I help you??
Customer: My phone just did this wierd update thing, And now I cant find my IM app!! What do I do??
      Verizon: By a new Phone

    • stupidllama

obvious statement is obvious. You really think people are going to be calling verizon and sitting on hold for twenty minutes just to thank them for the update. Of course more people will be calling to complain about the missing IM app, if its something they are looking for, and cant find, and didn’t know that it wasn’t going to be there. Seriously who just calls customer service to thank them?

      • Detonation

Who said anything about calling CS? All I said was that in general sense, I bet there will be more people unhappy with one of their apps missing than people happy or caring about getting an update.

    • balthuszar

we had a verizon im app on android 2.3.6?

  • http://twitter.com/DaCatalyst Clayton Anderson

Every time I see RAZR from here on out, I want to seen HD behind it with a 3300mAh battery! Let’s GO!

  • rk-Kamikaze

    About frigging time!!!

  • KleenDroid

    6 months isn’t too bad I guess.

    • Michael Schnider

Yeah Im glad I jumped on the Razr Maxx. At least we will have ICS and good radios lol

      • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

But you’ll have Blur ICS and you’ll still have a crappy display.

BTW, I know you’re directly ripping on the Gnex, so I’ll just say this: the new radios in 4.0.4 on the Gnex are great.

        • Michael Schnider

Display really doesnt bother me too much. And I dont think the blur ICS looked to bad. Also I was about 1 sec away from getting the Galaxy Nexus But then Best Buy price matched Amazon for the Maxx. So I went with that.

          • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound like a jerk. I just have to defend my precious ya know. ;) It sounded to me like you were just blantantly ripping on the Gnex, just as I was ripping on the RAZR. Anywho, I apologize.

          • Michael Schnider

            Accepted lol.

        • http://www.facebook.com/waldragon Luke Sketch Brickley

          Oh, you have a Nexus?
Tell me about how much better your phone is.

          • LiterofCola

            I lol’d

        • venimdenim

Galaxy Nexus, 100% pure garbage…I bought one to break up buds on

          • rick

Gnex SUCKS compared to the maxx. Verizon employees all say Gnex sucks too.

          • will bartlett

            Vzw employees know everything. /s

          • rick

Most don’t know much, but they were correct with stating that the razr is better than the gnex. Gnex has poor radios and terrible battery life.

          • will bartlett

mine doesnt. dont act like all of them are terrible. my gnex has radios that work perfectly well. i get 15 or 16 hours on my battery and that is plenty.

          • rick

Most complaints about the gnex is poor reception and poor battery life. I have read so many reviews of this when I was looking to get the gnex.

          • will bartlett

reviews left it stock. 4.0.2 had issues yes but after that it was wonderful

          • Counsel Dew

4.0.4 did nothing to make mine better. Has the issue in LTE, CDMA, & even in safe mode…

          • will bartlett

are you talking about the “poor” reception? how is it poor? does it have less bars showing up? lower dbm? hmm cause i had my gnex next to a razr last night and we both had 2 bars of LTE…not sure how that is poor reception. but here…since you dont know googlefu here is the link to show you that it isnt really worse in the signal area… http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25921-this-is-why-your-verizon-nexus-signal-sucks/

            @disqus_shp1sVFtRo:disqus

          • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Well then, it must suck then. My mistake. I will inform ummmmm……myself and everyone else I know who loves their Gnexes that it sucks. They’ll be upset at the bad news, but in time they’ll come to accept it.

          • Counsel Dew

Yours may be fine… grats! Mine, however, is, most definately, not functional. :/

          • Big_EZ

I agree the Maxx is a better phone but using Verizon employee advice doesn’t help your arguement, most of them don’t know much about what they sell.

        • Michael Schnider

At what point did I “rip” on the Gnex? I simply wrote why I was happy about the Razr getting 4.0. I have read multiple forums of people giving up on there Gnex for Razr because they bought a “Phone” and needed to use it as such. I think the Gnex is a great device and was really my only other choice but after reading so many things about issues with data dropping call dropping I decided to go with the Maxx.

          • Big_EZ

Its not jus5 a Gnex problem, its a Samsung problem. All of my old Samsungs had bad reception. When I talk to owners of new Samsung phones some say they get great reception but then tell me where their phone loses reception and my moto phones get perfectly good signal in thoses spots/inside buildings.

          • balthuszar

back when the galaxy s fascinate was available…they sent out updates to fix things that previous updates broke…the last update my husband got before he got rid of the phone, broke the ability to connect the phone to the computer…we called samsung and was told that since we could use it as a phone, it wasnt broken and there was nothing they were going to do…was told the same thing by vzw

        • stupidllama

the display isnt crappy, it may not be the best, but seriously, its not “crappy”. I have nothing bad to say about the gnex however, to each their own.

        • buy this

Seriously dude get over it nobody cares anymore

        • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

My OG Razr is running fantastic as stock as well. Glad you’re enjoying your phone as much as I enjoy mine. Can’t we all just get along and bash iOS6

          • Guest

Classic I’m starting to be ashamed of admitting we own android phones .(3) We also have IPhones. (3) We have 7 in our home and no one bashes another over a device it’s a freaking phone. You should have said can’t we just all get along.

      • Bionicman

actually after 4.0.4 i have amazing reception. i get full bars on 4G in the OC now and hardly ever drop to 3G now. its a noticeable improvement.

        • Bionicman

btw i have family members with razr’s and they love it. official ICS ota is going to make it better. this is great news for everyone because more ICS for everyone is a good thing!

          • Michael Schnider

Razr is def a great phone and so is the Gnex just at the time when I got my Maxx the Gnex was still having problems. But if the Ota fixed the issue that is great!!

          • KleenDroid

Getting an update like this is going to be great and is going to be like getting a new phone!

          • Counsel Dew

My gnex is still a great paperweight! …

          • chargerman165

Really? I have both the Maxx and Gnex and love them both. Gnex one of best phones ever had. If had to give up one it would be hard a hard choose to make.

    • Guest

I thought it was 8 months, too long for me why the wait?

  • http://twitter.com/Defenestratus Defenestratus

    September. I’m calling it.

    • jak_341

Wouldn’t doubt it. GNex will have a Jelly Bean ROM by then.

  • Michael Schnider

Free Verizon Message: We know you dont really care about Ice Cream Sandwich, But we want to make sure you know about our most popular app that will not work with the upgrade. Please download one that will work!!

    • https://plus.google.com/110773438514346746273/ tjhrulz

If you do not care about Ice Cream Sandwhich you either:
      1. Have never used a device with ICS before
      2. Thought they were referring to the dessert and are lactose intolerant or a horrible person

      • Counsel Dew

I’ve used it, & it isn’t like ‘sliced bread…’ It is a step up… Why should everyone care?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I26T5S34AY4UDT7IJF6HWYS3CE Anthony

    and the Rezound…….and FIRST

    • Capt.D

First for what? You were 2 minutes late!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I26T5S34AY4UDT7IJF6HWYS3CE Anthony

Ah Damn. When I wrote it it was empty

  • schoat333

8 months too late. Completely unacceptable!

    • Butters619

Yes because every other manufacturer has already pushed out ICS….oh wait…

      • m3ta

Every manufacturer that matters has pushed it, yes.

        • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

          Not on Verizon…

          • Butters619

Not in U.S. for the most part.

    • just being realistic here

Look, you need to be realistic here. i’m tired of people like you saying that “it’s too late”. you try to figure out how to upgrade a phone from android 2.3 to 4.0 WITHOUT wiping AND having everything work EXACTLY THE SAME for everyone regardless of what they have on their device

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=635525837 Mitchell Mellin

Good point about without wiping. They should have offered a clean install option to those that don’t want to wait for an upgrade option. That would have been cool.

        • Droidzilla

          They do; it’s called XDA.

      • mustbepbs

You’ve got a really good point. Something I haven’t really thought of before.

      • sgtguthrie

Exactly, JBQ from Google (Manages AOSP repos as I understand it) said 6 months is about as fast as possible with the major upgrade that ICS is.
