HTC Rezound Receives Another Ice Cream Sandwich Build Leak, Includes Newer Radios and Bug Fixes

Owners of the HTC Rezound, a new Ice Cream Sandwich treat has been made available to you today. Last week an initial build was leaked, but unfortunately some bugs apparently made it through s well and have plagued users. This newest build should address some of these problems such as the wrong sender being displayed on SMS messages, which could lead to awkward situations. We do know that an official 4.0.3 update is in the works, but if patience is your strong suit, then give this a go.

This is a full ROM, so this will almost undoubtedly wipe your entire phone. Approach with caution.

*Your bootloader needs to be locked. If you unlocked using the HTCDev tool, this won’t work.

1.  Download the file from above and rename to PH98IMG.zip.
2.  Place the file on the root of your SD card and power off your device.
3.  Reboot to bootloader by pressing Volume Down and Power.
4.  Once in the bootloader, the process will start automatically with on-screen instructions.
5.  Enjoy ICS.

Hello all, I have to ask some question and maybe some of you might have a solution for it. I’ve just installed this leaked, things working perfect so far, but I’ve notice this G3 keeps popping up and disappearing from the top of the phone. Is that some bug? If there’s a fix please email me, thanks. :)

I just tried to Flash it and it wouldn’t find the zip file. I had to take the “zip” off of the end of the file name because when I found it on the phone it said PH98IMG.zip.zip. so i took it off and it worked just fine.

  • Newpower1999

Installed it WORKS LIKE A CHARM :)

  • vann

has anyone actually used this process? I can’t get it to work. I have fast reboot turned off, i start it in bootloader and it runs, says no image, then nothing.

  • JeffDenver

I installed this last night because I got tired of waiting.

I am glad I did. This is pretty sweet. Everything works well. Quadrant score of 3000…and this is *stock*. For comparison, the Galaxy Nexus gets around 2000 stock on quadrant according to Engadget. Menus are very snappy and fluid. It almost feels like an iOS device.

does this mean that the ICS release is going to be pushed out further as they test this new build?

Anyone played around with this on their Rezound? It clearly says it’s not Sense 4.0, but is the launcher more like ice cream sandwich or like old sense?

    • http://twitter.com/CSick19 Corey Sickinger

More importantly, does sense 3.6 on ICS feel bloated?

Can anyone post pictures of what is different? Is anything Sandwhichy at all?

I am S-OFF I installed new leak and recovery and then
Venasaur Rom v3.1.0 and working great.

I want to be the very best like no one ever was.

  • Meticode

I upgraded to the Rezound in February from the Droid X2. This is very solid phone and extremely underrated..

    • Josh Groff

Agreed, HTC makes some solid phones. The radio from stock GB is almost as good as the BIonic’s 902 radio (and that’s saying a lot.) Plus as much as some people hate sense, I enjoy it. They do have the best social integration IMO.

  • crispy822

my my, the rezound is so hot, it’s just melting out ics leaks every week lol

  • Tomas Mijares

Can you still use this If you’re stock and not rooted?

    • http://twitter.com/ATechieWorld Gene Liverman

Yes. As a matter of fact, you actually have to unroot / relock to flash these. As the article says, rename it, put it on your external SD card, reboot (maybe a few times), enjoy. Be sure to back up your internal storage (the one listed as /sdcard) as it WILL get erased.

    • mike_s123

Be careful, because if you’re stock, there’s no going back. It may even be impossible to go forward to the actual release version when it comes out, unless you unlock/s-off.

I think you forgot to throw a NOT somewhere in there… 😉

  • derick

HTC Needs to release the ICS/Sense 4 Kernal source code so we can unlock the true magic behind Sense 4.0!!

  • brando56894

I’m gonna flash the new radio when my phone gets a good charge. Here’s the link for anyone that just wants the radio: https://dl.dropbox.com/s/6u5db0dj7wut5ke/rezound_AndroidPolice_3PH98IMG.zip?dl=1

but if patience is your strong suit, then give this a go.”

Or, if patience ISN’T your strong suit.

Mine is growing thinner, I must say. Have to check out that xda link as I’m unlocked and rooted.

    • aldude345

You would have to relock to download this Lonnie

  • Trevor

Is it a big undertaking for HTC to update these phones to the newest version of Sense (4.0)? I have to imagine the Rezound is plenty capable of running it. Or is this their way of saying, “if you want the newest UI, go buy our newer phones”?

    • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

The camera software is a big part of sense 4.0 and rezound is missing that image chip they are using in their new phones.

      • jjooeey

        image chip?

      • nicotinic

So aside from the camera/camcorder app, the Rezound should be able to run Sense 4.0 no problem? Of course it can and it does if you’re into Rom flashing…I am.

Leaving older devices out of the latest iteration of their user skin and/or OS upgrade is how HTC and the other top manufacturers conduct business.

If they continuously updated their entire “capable” phone line-up with their latest and greatest software offering then a potential customer would be under less pressure to buy the company’s upcoming device(s). They don’t want that so they give you something like Sense 3.6 and bug fixes here and there. All of the companies do it. I’m not picking on HTC.

Image chip? Nonsense. Even though the much heralded One line does have a dedicated image processing chip, that doesn’t preclude an older device from reaping the optimizations and other benefits of a trimmed down Sense 4.0.

PS: the only problem with using the cam software from Sense 4.0 on the Rezound should be the ability to capture video and take a photo at the same time…

        • AlexKCMO

There are ROMs with 4.0, they probably just stripped out the part reliant on that chip. Regardless, I really want an AOSP experience, and we’re really close to it.

This device will see CM9, it’s just a matter of time.

      • Trevor

Ah, I forgot about the camera part.

    • brando56894

It’s half hardware and half software. Sense4 is only available on new phones if you don’t want to flash custom ROMs, it’s a selling point.

  • http://twitter.com/bboyairwreck Eric Chee

good to see how manufacturers “leak” this for us developers/users to test it out for them as guinea pigs haha clean hate.

    • Derek Gelinas

That’s not how it works. I know for a fact where these leaks come from and it isn’t HTC.

I have a few questions… anyone know the answers? 1. is this official update still slated for the 9th? 2. will the update push sense 4.0? and 3. what does it mean when it says new radios? better service?

    • RobMorris

no sense 4, no word on the update still being the 9th, and possible better service with radios

      • jjooeey

do you know if Rezound will get sense 4.0? why do anything with the radios?

        • Bewara2009

No the Rezound will not get sense 4.0, but if you want to unlock your phone and flash the sense 4.0 rom on it go ahead link is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501512
I think some people are still having some issues with their connection and the new radio patch should fix it.

          • jjooeey

do you know when the official is supposed to come out?

          • Bewara2009

No one knows officially when ICS will come out, but pretty much the rumors are saying May 9th so we will have to wait and see.

          • Butters619

Official Sense 4.0 will not be coming out for the Rezound.

  • Droidzilla

I think this was probably the most underrated phone of 2011. Good thing, though, as it probably pushed HTC to up their game on the One series.

    • Josh Groff

I still think Rezound is an awesome name for a phone, despite my hate of people replacing s’s with z’s to make a word sound cooler.

Also, after a week of owning one, I wouldn’t consider replacing it until VZW gets an HTC or Motorola phone with a quad core S4 chip.

  • aldude345

Good to see the Rezound getting lots of love lately. Loveeeee this phone 😀

  • LiterofCola

    Good news for Rezound-ers.
