Actually, the Google Play Store Update is Rolling Out to a Bunch of Devices – Galaxy Nexus and XOOM Included

We thought that Google TV users were the lucky ones, but it appears now as if a variety of Android devices including the Galaxy Nexus and Motorola XOOM are receiving the new Google Play Store. Not much changes as far as functionality goes, but the logo and look certainly have. Check it out after the break.

This is a very bad, poorly thought-out idea. People actually do use their pocket computers (often with phones chips inside…) for more than just playing games or listening to music. Plus, Google did this with no advance notice to their users. I just went to find a particular app and was immediately confronted with the notice, “By accepting Google Play you agree to these new terms of service, including the YouTube Rental Agreement”. Huh???

I don’t want to ”play ” anything , I don’t have any free time to spend on video games, and I certainly don’t want to rent anything from YouTube!

What happened to the Market?? Who is the seriously incompetent fool at Google that approved this change? And then thought it was even better to spring this idiocy on us with no notice or consultation or provision to opt out?

Google is becoming the new computing Evil Empire. Too much success and perceived power and you totally lose touch with your users. Forcing people to accept what they don’t want and don’t need is the sign of a dictator! Whatever happened to the motto “Do no evil”??

I understand the open-source Linux for the ARM processors is about ready. Not a bloody minute too soon!

It looks like ICS ROMs are getting it, but not GB ROMs. I am dual booting between CM9 and CM7 with Boot Manager, and my CM9 ROM get the update as soon as I opened the market. CM7 has yet to get it.

My Galaxy tab updated as well.

  • weapon x

I’m running a custom ROM for those who are wondering

  • weapon x

Got it last night on my rooted Razr.  Weird, my sis has a stock and she has not received it yet

  • Chad Payne

Transformer got it last night. G-Nex got it this morning.

  • Tim Swann

Haven’t received it on my G-Nex just yet, but could running a ROM cause that?

  • Utrashgohere

IT’s a push, no choice on getting it. Broke my app store icon.

  • Adnoxaei

My Nexus and Transformer haven’t gotten it yet, but my roommate’s Epic has it…

  • KRS_Won

Any one else feel the triangle should have used the Nexus colors?

  • Larizard

With this rebranding, Google is moving away from “Android Green”, which started with ICS. I think it’s a good move. For a large ecosystem like Android, using a single color for branding has become too much of a constraint. The new lighter colors of the Play logo doesn’t even scream Google at all.

    • Adnoxaei

“Blue is the standard accent color in Android’s color palette.” –
      http://developer.android.com/design/style/color.html

Blue seems to be the standard now, but primaries are also there. I think the Books, Movies, and Music logos fit more with their primaries theme, but the actual Play logo seem out of place with how they wanted colors.

Not there on my Razr Maxx yet, I have the apps, but not the new market branding

  • Travisdodgens

Got the update on my rooted GNex running BAMF, and my Toshiba Thrive 10.1 stock.

  • ddevito

“We thought that Google TV users were the lucky ones”….Let me stop you right there.

Google TV users are not the lucky ones…for anything.

  • beerme828

I truly couldn’t care less about the name change. The logo change, however, lacks any hint of “Android” which, again, isn’t that big of a deal, but seems silly in the sense that the not-so-tech savvy users of Android could very easily (and, though I hate to say it, understandably) be confused by the disappearance of the “Android Market” and the appearance of a “Play Store” that looks like a confused prism.

  • desiman26

Just got it on my Galaxy Nexus, but I noticed that in the widget drawer, the dedicated market button (up top) doesn’t work. Anyone else have this problem?

    • desiman26

Never mind, it’s working now. I don’t know why it wasn’t working before.

  • dylan84

Got it on my Atrix 4G a minute ago. Not much difference.

I feel like it’s just a name change, and in a way the unification of all your media under a Google banner is smart, and I’m cool with that. I just don’t like the actual title of “Play” because of the childish sound. My Android is all business, and I’d prefer a different unifying title.

    • Jjooeey

      i agree

    • Michael Forte

How about Google Mullet? Business in the front, party in the back.

  • wpscompute

Google must be hitting everything ICS.  I received the new store on my Transformer TF101. Not much of a change from what was there with the ICS update from ASUS

    • ggfb20

It arrived on my galaxy s2 already Tmobile USA hope ics arrives that fast when it’s sent out …oh wait…I’m rooted and on custom rom so I should have it very soon.

  • EvanTheGamer

No thanks. I refuse to update to the new so-called Play Store.

    Android Market FTW!

    • Jason Purp

“A new name and a new front page? I DON’T THINK SO, BUCKO.”

Honestly, it’s not a big deal. It’s annoying but still. And I don’t mean to sound so serious in this reply. I didn’t really know how else to say it.

      • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, it’s not like it’s the end of the world…but like I said before, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? Same applies to a name change. Android Market is just familiar and it works. Shouldn’t have touched it.

        • Jason Purp

           I totally agree

        • KRS_Won

But last week Google said Music was broke..  I think their whole idea is to separate purchases from Android exclusively, letting people know you don’t have to own an Android phone/tablet to buy music/movies/books.

        • GotSka81

I have to agree.  I’m still not able to use my GNex for work because google refuses to fix exchange functionality…I’m referring to the inability to set push notifications for folders within the inbox.  This is a simple feature that all business users need, why is it being ignored?

  • faganm24

Got it on my DROID Bionic.

  • http://twitter.com/sequenceoftweet Sequence of Sound…

    meh…I like Android market better.

        thanks…

  • Gradyduncan

    confirmed on Droid Bionic here.

    • Murph

      nothing on my Bionic….

  • Jason Purp

They’re excessively using the word “Play” now. If this goes on for longer than a month, I hope whoever’s idea this was goes and plays in the middle of a busy highway.

    • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, that’s the spirit! Playing in busy highways FTW!

    • AndroidUser00110001

The middle of the highway is usually safe since there are usually no cars so I hope they play directly in front of on coming traffic :D

  • Akowal

I got it already on my Droid Razr Maxx

  • Jason Purp

These new icons don’t even match well with the new ICS layout. The music icon just looks odd now in the action bar.

    • patapongirl

The icon matches the halo light theme; the design is great.

I just miss green Andy. They need to bring him back somehow.

      • Jason Purp

Maybe it just takes some getting used to or something. But so far, I’m not a fan.

    • Jason Purp

I made so many comments on this post. The comment section of this article has been dominated by pink bunnies.

      • Jjooeey

        thats pretty wierd

  • Jjooeey

I have the XOOM and the Rezound… Enough with the GOOGLE Play crap.. We want a date for ICS
