Android Team Releases New OS Distribution Numbers, Gingerbread Blows Up

Each month, the Android team publishes the distribution numbers for each version of Android.  It doesn’t do much other than give us a chance to laugh at the idea that some people are still running phones with Cupcake and Eclair on them.  Well, it also gives us a look at which OS is on the rise – this month it’s Gingerbread thanks to Motorola who upgraded their entire portfolio.

And then next month or in December, we should see a new entry as Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Fun, fun.

I precisely needed to thank you so much once again. I do not know what I would have handled without the type of information revealed by you about my topic. This has been a very distressing issue in my view, nevertheless taking a look at your skilled way you managed it forced me to jump with gladness. Now i am happier for your information and believe you know what an amazing job you have been providing teaching the rest with the aid of your web page. I know that you’ve never come across all of us.

I wonder how they take into account ROMed phones. I have the original Droid, but I am technically running 2.3.6 (Pete’s ROM). So does my phone go into the stats for Froyo (the official version for the Droid) or Gingerbread (the version I actually run)? If it is the former, these statistics could actually be pretty skewed.

For all the talk of the “Fast Upgrade” path there are still a lot of Froyo devices out there.  Anyone running an OG Droid with Froyo should have rooted a long time ago by now.  I know plenty of people stuck with samsung devices and empty promises of upgrades.  As far as I am concerned if its not a Nexus Samsung has been horrible for upgrading devices.  One of the first things I do is root and ROM anyways.  That and I only buy the high end phones.  Perhaps this is proof that more and more people are using smart phones that could care less as long as it does what they need it to.  I know sales of mid-tier Android phones has been on the steady up and up.  I guess once ICS releases we’ll see what that does.

I got 2.3.7 on my Thunderbolt thanks cm7, and 3.2.2 on my Xoom! I can’t wait for the Nexus!

    what devices still run eclair?

  • Anonymous

What phones are still on 1.5 and 1.6?!

    • http://twitter.com/nashmax73 TomAss (TA)

That would be Moto Paper handheld and the Moto Stone Tablet from long, long ago.  Some people just get stuck in really bad contracts, but at least it’s not an iYawn 4s2

Anyone who was like me that hasn’t upgraded running donut via heret on an SD card in a Palm Treo 650! lol

  • Guttatae22

Man I had a thunderbolt and got a replacement now can’t even get gingerbread again o well the vigor is around the corner

  • MikeyBotz

This post was dry, uneventful, unoriginal and just plain out boring. I guess we are slowly recovering from the i*hone 3s2 post.

  • Josh Barnes

Who’s still running Froyo?  I’ve had Gingerbread on my OG almost a year now and it still runs great!

    • sog805

still running it on my brand new droid charge…lame

    • Anonymous

      I 2nd that one!!!

  • Peter Kelly

I still let a buddy at work who has a Samsung T-Mobile phone sniff my OG.  “Smells like Gingerbread”.

His is mushy.  Like an eclair.

  • bigmak40

So the OG Droid is not part of their portfolio?

    • EC8CH

Pete’s officially taken over the OG Droid :-)

    • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

No, it is not. The Droid reached end-of-life a long time ago, so they are no longer supporting it.

  • S9779

Man I would be pissed if I was runnig 1.5 Droid Eris for the lose

    • Rokenford

Yeah, the Eris runs much better on gingerbread(CM7 or sense 3.0 (and soon to be 3.5)) Eclair is much slower than these.

  • mike

Froyo is gonna plummet once all of us with the OG Droid get the Nexus Prime

    • Anonymous

Had an OG Droid, dropped it for the Bionic.  Just wouldn’t run things anymore.  Honestly, I don’t understand why people hate this phone so much.  It is a great phone.  Maybe not the greatest but very, very good.  No issues with the screen.  It isn’t perfect but it is better then the over-saturated AMOLED screens that Samsung uses and Blur is not really that bad.  Yes the Prime could be awesome, but I think it will just be a Touch Wizzed Charge 2 with some better specs.  Not and unlocked Nexus that others will see.

I am hoping for a hopped up SGS2 for the prime
