HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderbolt

HTC told us all the way back in March that we’d have Gingerbread (Android 2.3) on the Thunderbolt some time in Q2, but with that time frame about to come to a close, our readers are starting to get antsy.  And that means that they are reaching out to HTC to try and find out any little tidbit they can, one of which we’ve included below.  An HTC rep has confirmed that the next update for the Tbolt won’t just be to fix the reboot issues, but that it will also update the phone to Gingerbread.

Dear Adam  XXXXX,

I understand how important it is for your Thunderbolt to function properly and I apologize that you have been experiencing rebooting of the device. HTC and Verizon are aware of this issue and an update will be released soon that will address the reboot issue, and bring the Gingerbread 2.3 upgrade on board, as well as several other enhancements. Although I don’t have an official release date to provide you, this update will be released soon. Please monitor our website for further information as the release date moves closer.

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Sincerely,

Jessica

Want to see what others are saying? Have a question to ask other HTC fans?

I know that isn’t a date, but Q2 ends in 5 days, so we’ll be on the look out for any happenings behind the scenes.  To get an idea of what you can expect from 2.3 on the Tbolt, you’ll want to check out this post.

Cheers Adam!

I purchased a spare battery and they both behave the same. That is to say pretty poor.

Either I have two defective batteries, or those who say they use the phone with display on for 6 hours at a time with more than half battery capacity remaining are liars. Period.

It is possible that between me and my friend we have four bad batteries or phones even. Just not likely. Our battery life is the same poor.

Power hungry 4.3″ LCD with 1400 mah low quality HTC batteries will equal poor life. And unless your LCD magically uses less power than the rest, you’re not getting more than 6 hours of interactive use. Sorry. I still like the phone but put it on the charger every 4 hours. I don’t use Facebook or twitter on my phone. I do have work email and gmail and gtalk syncing. And maybe 30-60 voice calls a day.

    • batterypoor

      Correction 30-60 minutes

    • Maxxmentum

What I have seen is inconsistent behavior.  Some days with mod use I can get the 6-9ish hours, others its at 40% in 2-3 hours.  I’m running rooted froyo 2.2.1.

  • Scott

When I go to check for update I get a Error stating Service Unavailable.  Check for Software Update under Settings when service is available.   Any Ideas?

I woke up this morning to find 4g waiting for me!!!!:) oh I live in rancho cucamonga, ca.

Yea i am showing 4G in San Bernardino as well, but it isnt on VZ’s LTE map, interesting but nice

I get 6  to 8 hours use out of  my thunderbolt, with heavy use,and that’s with calls, texting, checking my yahoo and gmail, and reading this tech sites and playing games for hours, but with everyday normal use which is just a few  mins of games, text and calls.. get 12 to 14 hours out of my stock battery

  • Jonyauger

I just went 30 hrs with half 4g half WiFi on 1700 battery. If no games are involved I can get 18 hrs with stock battery and 4g without WiFi. My area just got 4g and my speed tests come up between 5-6 mbps. Which is the slowest they say it can be. Maybe the speed has something to do with. I hear of people getting freakish speeds. Maybe that is killing the battery.

are you running Das Bamf ROM on your thunderbolt? if so what did u use to root it: manual or one-click? also does anyone know of a root method for firmware 1.13…

    • Maxxmentum

one click root did not work for me, so I did the step by step.  Was not that bad, just do it at night so you are not interrupted.

  • Orion

Love my Bolt.  I may be on 3G network, but it has not done me wrong in the battery department.  I work 12 hour shifts and I get easy 18 hours with moderate date use.  Just like tweaking a laptop to get the most out of her, the Thunderbolt needs TLC and she will fly when you need her to and chilax to give you more later.

    • Maxxmentum

I will ask for everyone. Can you give us details on your setup?  Are you using wifi during the day, I noticed mine lat a little long when I have wifi connected in place of 4G.  Thanks

  • Maxxmentum

If they can make it so that my cam works, GPS is less than 1500′ off, PC connect to direct, and does not reboot, I am so on board! A battery life improvement is wishful thinking.

I wish I can go back in time and slap myself when I was purchasing the Thunderbolt. And then two more slaps for when my two week return policy expired.

Just got off of the phone with HTC because I got a replacement Thunderbolt and was trying to get the last update. The rep told me they stopped that update and I asked if it was because of this new update and she said yes, it will   be out before the end of this month. It’s ready now they are just waiting on Verizon.

My friend’s TBolt got the update last night.  Anyone else seen it yet? (Hawaii)

    • Jboogie1289

      Got what update?

  • Anonymous

Of course HTC also said their phones had to be locked because of carriers and that the Desire would not be getting Gingerbread, so going back on what they have said would be nothing new for HTC. I’m just sayin’…

Its amazing how google hasnt figured out a way to kill off all this fragmentation with the phone manufactures. I hate to say it but thats why I still dig Apple. You don’t have to worry about which version of what your running. Android is still leaps and bounds better than iOS but I just wish that I could get Gingerbread before some one else gets Ice Cream Sandwich! lol

Just wanted to say that the coverage on this blog lately has been phenomenal.  I’ve found myself captivated even if the article is about a device I don’t have.   Keep up the quality work!

If you’re really getting less than 12 hours you’re doing it wrong….or a troll :)

GIMME SOME GINGERBREADS FOR MY GODLY THUNDERBOLT!

    • http://twitter.com/QSMinSD Quatham Mumin

No the Thunderbolt battery is a complete joke.  In fact, the entire phone is turning into a joke.  Wish I still had my Droid X.  The 4G network is fast, but it only works 50% of the time, so it’s kinda pointless.  Oh well, at least Im grandfathered into unlimited 4G.  Looking forward to getting rid of the Thunderbolt and buying a Bionic out of pocket when it’s released.

      • http://twitter.com/lpklemmer Larry Klemmer

Excuse me? I JUST factory restored my thunderbolt, added all my apps, syncing every hour with facebook and 30 RSS feeds. Sent 287 text messages, placed 4 phone calls varying from 8 minutes to 14 minutes, browsed facebook for 25 minutes, played Kona’s Crate for 30 minutes, searched for 15 minutes on google for the spark plugs for my jetski, downloaded the free app of the day from amazon ALL on 4G.

Currently my phone has been off the charger for 9 Hours and 18 minutes and has 64% battery remaining. I am not rooted, i have not changed a single thing to try to conserve any battery life.

My env touch could not touch this, my blackjack 2 could not touch this, my girlfriends LG ally can not touch this, my friends iPhone 4 died an hour ago with similar use? The thunderbolt does not have the battery issues that most claim unless you’re running full brightness and constantly pushing facebook/twitter notifications.

        • Maxxmentum

I have to admit I am puzzled.  I live in phx with very good 4G, I don’t twitter often (every few days) and no face book. I keep my screen on 40%, no IM running ever.  Running froyo, no task manager.   I only see 9 hr if I am wifi connected and hardly use my phone.  How are you getting this kind of battery life?  When did you get the phone?  Its not that we think you are a liar, just no foolin, we are shocked.  Not all of use are IMing, Twitter mad, facebook drones (no offense to the drones).  Its like there are 100 correctly working TB out there.

          • Jboogie1289

It’s like you said, there are many people out there with major issues on their phones and some who, by the grace of the Big Guy, have no issues at all. I live in South Houston and it’s a major 4g city. I use the LTE Switch and turn off the 4g unless I really really wanna see fast speeds and use 3g 80% of the time. I get anywhere from 10 hrs (min) to 15 hrs, and all this while talking a few times, a lot of texting, mild surfing and screen brightness @ 20%.

        • http://twitter.com/QSMinSD Quatham Mumin

You seem to be the one guy who got the super battery then because if you go around to thunderbolt forums or simply read this very comment thread, you will see that the battery issue is real.  BTW, I have nothing syncing except google gmail.  Everything else is OFF. Twitter, FB, Weather, Stocks, etc.  It’s a  smartphone that I cant even do smartphone stuff with.

          • Anonymous

The battery issue is real for some people along with reboots. While others like myself are not plagued with the issues. This is by far my best phone to date comparing against the D1 (although I have a special place in my heart for the D1), the D2, and the DX. The DX was very nice but my T-Bolt still outperforms easily especially considering you can fully unlock the device. My T-Bolt battery lasts as long as my X before Gingerbread easily.

And yes if you look at the boards there are plenty of people that have all sorts of problems.  Honestly if you check any board there are people complaining about every phone out there.Yes some people have real problems, but many just don’t know how to resolve their simple issues.

I’ve had my T-bolt since almost the beginning (and paid full price) and never had any issues. Except for when they had network problems a few times, but those were quickly resolved.

The guy above says he only has 4g about half the time. The only thing I can figure is that he is in a weak area. I am almost always on 4g at home and much of my traveling area. There are some places that are only 3g but I know where they are.

This phone is not for everyone. No phone is for everyone. Some people need a very easy phone with little to mess with. I think this is why the Iphone is so popular… you pretty much don’t have to think about anything.

I am looking forward to that beast of a Samsung phone coming to Verizon however. If it is 4g I will buy it out of pocket. If it is only 3g I will stay with the T-Bolt.

          • http://twitter.com/QSMinSD Quatham Mumin

Im not in a weak 4G area.  Im in San Diego and this entire place is nearly completely blanketed with 4G coverage.  Ive never even seen the 3G icon here.  The problem is I will have good signal strength and 4 bars, but no data will download.  The “up” arrows stays illuminated white and no data ever comes through.  Im on my third TB with the same problem and my buddy’s TB does the same thing.  Im guessing it must be a network problem.

Im coming from a Droid X and if you take the 4G out of the equation, the Droid X is easily a better device IMO. Sure the TB is faster and snappier, but the DX is much more reliable and can make it through the day without having to swap batteries.

          • Anonymous

I guess we each have our own experiences and opinions. I agree that the X was a nice phone. I had one, got my son one, my employee… then I sold mine to my employees wife after I had my T-Bolt for awhile and was sure I was staying with it.

With as well as my T-Bolt works I would not trade back for my X for any reason. (Except I did like holding the X in my hand better than the Bolt)

I also had a friend switch from an I-Phone to a Bolt and she loves it. Since getting it she has not had a single problem with it.

We spend alot of time with our phones so we should make sure we are happy with the. If you do not like your T-Bolt I would not mess around with it any longer… move on. Sell the Bolt online and pay the difference to get what will make you happy. There is no reason not to. If you don’t like the Bolt that is ok….Even if you sold your X, they are so cheap now you could get one with what you sell your Bolt for easily.

          • http://twitter.com/lpklemmer Larry Klemmer

Just wanted to chime in with one last thing; the reason you see so many problems/issues about the Thunderbolt on the forums is because these are the people with problems. There are 1000′s of users out there without problems, every phone has a few glitches especially the first gen of a phone sporting all new technology.

We will see Gingerbread soon along with many bug fixes, I guarantee they will not just sweep this phone under the rug, it is still the most popular 4G device released on VZW to date.

        • Anonymous

stock, i got 4 hours with much less use than you’re describing. with the MR2.5 radio, i can barely last the work day. my screen brightness setting is about 25%

    • Jboogie1289

You are so right. After some adjustments and tinkering, I’m getting approx 14-16 hours. And that’s a complete battery drain.

  • Interstellarmind

will there ever be a z4 one-click root , DX style, for the tbolt? OR should i just take the plunge with adb stuff?

    • Anonymous

Take the plunge, it’s really not that bad.  It’s will make you a bit nervous but it will be ok. There is one click apps that walk you through the process, but you have to interact with it, follow some instructions and do a couple updates…  But once you’ve done it you never have to worry about it again.

    • Anonymous

The ADB stuff is easy, and you should learn it anyway because android is gonna be around a long, long time. It seems the hardest part for most ppl is setting ADB up so it sees your phone, but after that, its pretty much copy paste and be VERY careful not to unplug ur phone in the middle of the process.

  • Anonymous

Using Pandora starting @ 8am I get 4-5 hours then recharge and one more top off before I go home after work. Running liberty.

  • Interstellarmind

again… i’m astounded (or impressed?) how our dev community can rock some awesome ROMs in a matter of weeks, whereas it takes GIANT corporations like HTC, VZW, and MOTO months to come out with a bug fixing update. amazed. you’d think they’d be smart enough to put them on their payroll?!

    • Anonymous

100% agree with you, the developer community by far smoke the Manufacturer developers.

The reboots on this phone are ridiculous.  Gingerbread this week will make me a happy camper otherwise I’m selling it for a Charge.

I never thought I’d hate the word “soon” so damn much, but phone manufacturers have made it possible.. so ridiculous

  • Pat Morton

second quarter of what year? I’ve been a verizon customer for years and know their definition of “soon”. when they say “will be released soon” they really mean “F*** you all. No update for you for at least 4-5 months.”

    • Inkster09

Is it me or does it seem vzw devices always have this problem. Could be the the many crap apps they put on their devices that make it do this? Anyone?

      • Inkster09

And vzw update dates and misses are getting comical. Cmon vzw ur the best carrier right? Again cld it be the crap apps you put on your phones?

    • Anonymous

I know, I now become so sad and dissapointed whenever I hear verizon say “coming soon”.
I think I hate those words more than “not coming soon”

  • GotSka81

It seems like Sammy Sung and HTC have switched places…HTC keeps promising and delaying, and now Sammy puts out updates like free panties from Victoria’s Secret.

    Come on Galaxy S II!

    • Tomblewitt

      you are funny
look. i like the thunder for it’s sound, stand, same specs as the other 2 except (nice screen, surprising i liked the revolution — has good whites) the charge that not only has 32g in with it but according to the rep “keeps it’s apps and derives it’s apps from SD card and it’s not on the processor i.e. better battery life.
I still like that thunder bolt though LET it run on that 1G chip although the rep said it was a significant speed difference in that ‘architecture/structure’ thus battery but i kinda think the htc extended battery is cool cause it looks to make it more grippable for a hard gripper like me

Good night all. I get to change my order on Monday……….

Good news for my wife and i as we just got our TB’s today.

    • Anonymous

that’s the reason I sold my TB and went back to my DX.. I got 7 hours without serious optimization (unrooted), and when I tried crazy optimization, including losing things that are the reason I have an android  phone I was able to get 10-12 hours.. it was pathetic, I can get 7am to 11pm on my DX with moderate usage and still have 40%, I’ll wake up in the morning, and as long as I charge by 11am the next day I’ll be fine.. I can pretty much squeeze 24 hours out of my DX no problem, that’s with a good amount of push notifications, email, and all google sync services, no motoblur facebook integration, but the FB app push noti’s… my DX gets identical bat life to my iphone4, and I don’t even make calls or text on my IP4 (work phone, so it is rare)

      • Anonymous

Something was wrong then.  My Thunderbolt lasts as long as my X did no problem.  I much prefer my Thunderbolt to my X, but there is nothing wrong with the X… enjoy!

    • http://twitter.com/Beezzzzy Basil Mahmud

I don’t have battery probs, I have GPS locking issues and constantly having to turn my Mobile Data on and off for 4G to work properly. I would also like a reason to use my FFC for more than “facebook” photos. Just Sayin!

      • Anonymous

I had major GPS issues too, until i updated to the current firmware, then installed GPS Status and hit menu>tools>manage agps>reset gps data, then menu>tools>manage apgs data>download gps data. that brought me from 1100 meters accuracy after 5 minutes, to 1-4 meter accuracy INSTANTLY. This worked on 2 different phones, one rooted and romd, one stock unrooted, both on the same current firmware. 605.7 i believe

I would welcome improvements with lag, battery life and the NFC feature, but all I really want is the rebooting to stop.  Yesterday, ironically, I was on a conference call with Google and my TBolt went into a rebooting fit, 3 times in a row.  It was 15 minutes until I could get everyone back on the line after thinking I ditched them but explaining it was just my HTC Android operating normally.

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

no NFC. we don’t have the chip

  • Jester4281

I don’t know if it helps but I spoke with VZW rep on Wednesday and she said ” the update to fix the reboot should be out by the end of the month”. Of course that was a “should” and from a VZW rep, VZW is the same company who pushed me out my reboot issue over OTA , so I don’t know how much I trust them.

    • Thunderatrix

Does the camera work with your Bamf?  I tried it, liked it but my cam was choppy and I could not direct drive connect to my PC.  So far I have had to go back to Froyo.  Bamf was very cool, and I was sad to go back.  The MR2 did work when I was trying it.

      • Anonymous

Camera works fine, but camcorder is still choppy. Make sure you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache 3 times each prior to install. If you still have camera issues, wipe the camera data and cache from “manage applications”. Also, make sure you aren’t restoring any system apps with titanium backup, only stuff YOU installed.

This is probably another rumor but on HTC community this is what was posted “Hello,
I have confirmed the A2.3 upgrade for the DROID INCREDIBLE will be rolling out on June 27.
    Here’s proof:
“Hello this is Evan from Verizon NRB

Just got home from work. We had a meeting today and our manager quickly
mentioned 2.3 push for the incredible. We were told the push will begin

    • Tomblewitt

With the Droid X already upgraded to Gingetbread and the Droid 2 apparently awaiting nothing but VZW’s blessing ( or perhaps a change) it would seem that Moto is ahead of the curve, not behind.

      • Rob Meyer

Im talking about announcements for their products… dx is irrelevant. They are very tight lipped about the bionic and d3. Other manufacturers voice about their upcoming lineup Moto is quiet and retarded both at once.

im a heavy user in a 4g area and it drains it oh so fast. if you have a kernel that would help me or something ill be more than glad to look at it. but my battery is almost non existant..(said as my battery hit 15% in the background…2hr12min

          • Anonymous

I leave my 4g on all the time, I use the phone moderately. Even if I used it heavily, I would get more than 2 hours out of it.

I’m running dasBAMF 1.6.3 with the stock kernel. clocked at 1200mhz performance mode.

          • Anonymous

have you wiped battery stats? also ive noticed the bolt doesnt like setcpu profiles. i use imoseyons newesr kernel clocked to 1.22 ghz and i get 10-18 hours. i can get 26 hrs if i use it as minimally as possible. also i turn 4g off when i dont need it and use wifi at home. im running liquid thundersense 1.5 froyo.

The only thing it could really be is your 4g always being on. Tethering also likes to kill batteries, regardless of what phone you have. I have my speedtweak set to normal and interactiveX. Do you use vipermod? because i tried it on this kernel and it actually made my battery a lot worse. not to mention i would see hiccups in the OS that werent there before. i reflashed the kernel and got my 10-18 hrs back.

tethering only goes on when its plugged on the wall but yea i always have 4g on unless im def not using it..but my job is so boring i always need it to do something productive and no im running gingeritis

gotcha. vipermod is a mod u can use on any rom to lower voltages of clock speeds within your kernel. imoseyons kernel is already really low voltage though so lowering it will probably cause instability and probably worse battery for you, like it did for me.

well right now im looking at other rom set ups…what would you recommend for a LONG battery life with moderate-heavy usage

          • Maxxmentum

Where did you get the imoseyons kernel did you notice any issues (cam not working, or network weirdness)?

I can get mine to last all day if I remember to charge it in the morning and don’t use it all day. With heavy use more like 6-8 hours.

You’re holding it wrong then.  I get 10-12 hours on stock battery – unrooted.

      • Slllllyyy

11 hours? I get a couple days on my droid x. stock battery

        • Anonymous

LOL, couple days….The battery on my Droid X would last a month on stock battery. And that’s nothing, because once it lasted 3 months. Beat that…

i used to get a couple days til i updated to gingerbread….now im lucky if i get that….i wonder why???

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6GRLYTRJDNJ2IOF5E7NDL3LT5M Nelson

no 1 hour battery life to be more exact

You’re doin it wrong then lol…i get 11 hours as well on stock battery…the only difference is i’m rooted running cm7

        • Maxxmentum

Is that the alpha?  Does the cam work with all the other stuff?

      • Tomblewitt

really sir how can that be? what would verizon say to that

more people – verizon employees and non employees are so inconsistent one saying 4 batteries would not be enough to carry for this fine device except

the ones WITH the phone are 90% happy — you are the prize at saying 1 hour

        something is wrong

i will have 4-6 i am sure and an external $39.99 battery as needed under phone keeping me going chargin this device up

        fast connection

great interface and i am too tired to look up if it doe skype AND swype

        ok then, happy 4g/3g :)

someone needs to understand sarcasm…its more around 4-6 hours for me

  • MOTOX

Ugh HTC from that probably fake but sort of real verizon pdf update leak. It better be sense 2.1 with sense 3.0 parts….otherwise i will bitch at you, lol.

  • storm34x

I bought the htc sensation outright. no contract and that is an awesome phone

  • storm34x

the pic up top has the sense 3.0 launcher in it. does that mean that thunderbolt will get some features from that build??

that pic is of a bolt running a gb rom with sense 3 parts added. i havent run a gb rom yet because peoples bolts are bricking and they havent found the cause yet.

      • http://twitter.com/HenriDevious Henri Devious

i’ve been running Das BAMF 2.0 (GB) for about 2 weeks now, no issues.. I hope mine doesn’t brick.. but i like to live dangerously. lol

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6GRLYTRJDNJ2IOF5E7NDL3LT5M Nelson

that was the first radio..the MR2 and MR2.5 radios are alot more stable and talks of bricking is still at your own risk

      • tjhrulz

The cause was the kernel and the new one that leaked has not been doing it

        • Anonymous

so there hasnt been a single reported brick with the newest kernel leak? if not im gonna get me some gb right now!

  • Anonymous

Can’t wait for some proper GB roms to come from this.
