DROIDX2 Launching May 26th with Dual-core Processor, qHD Screen and Gingerbread

The Motorola DROIDX2 was rumored to originally be scheduled to release today, but with the push back of the DROID Charge, we were wondering if it hadn’t been pushed back as well.  According to Verizon, that is definitely the case.  The new date for the launch of Verizon’s first dual-core Tegra 2 Android beast will be May 26th with direct fulfillment orders starting on May 19th (which we’re thinking means a pre-order is on the way).

The device will as you all know, have a 4.3″ qHD screen with a resolution of 960×540, dual-core Tegra 2 processor clocked at 1GHz, 8MP rear camera, 720p video capture, 1080p out, 8GB of internal storage, an 8GB pre-installed SD card, and a 1540mAh battery.

Oh and did I mention Gingerbread (Android 2.3) in the title?  If you look at the screen featured above and you own an original DROIDX, then you’ll recognize that blue top bar as being 2.3.  And this only makes sense, especially with the possibly of GB rolling out to the original this week – we wouldn’t want last year’s model having a newer operating system than the freshly released version, would we?

*Note – I do want to point out that the Bionic we saw at CES had the same blue Blur and was only running 2.2, but I can’t imagine this would be the case here.

Update 5/12:  Just in case you needed anymore confirmation (via @TheDroidGuy):

Cheers ___!

Droid X2= Droid X squared like a math problem anyone? I can promise this will be in the advertising

I’m waiting to see the state of the bootloader on it. The onscreen keyboard is also growing old on me and I’d rather have something physical, so I’ll probably just wait for the D3.

  • Garrett Guthrie

How is this different from the regular Droid X besides gingerbread? I have a Droid X and im just not seeing the difference.

    • Anonymous

dual-core processor, no camera button, higher resolution screen?

      • Bigsike

Um ya none of that is blowing my skirt up if it’s a choice I will Def be staying with my DX1

  • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

People crying over this yet HTC thunderbolt is just an evo with 4g, HTC incredible 2 is barely an improvement.

Still same crappy designs and crappy single core CPU’s and everyone is still loving and buying them.

    Pathetic.

  • d-roids

this is an off topic remark but: remember when android started coming out with phones with a 4+ inch screens. now its kind of a big thing to have a big screen on smartphones. ive always been a fan of more real estate at least. but with the rumors of the new iPhony having a bigger screen and touch sensitive navigational button. doesnt it seem that it jus following what androids been doing. i remember steve jobs saying that a smartphone doesnt need a huge screen and that a single core processor was unnecessary.seems to me iP**** is losing touch and can no longer say they are original. all they got is more apps and androids catching up rather quickly.

  • Anonymous

Any word on how much RAM this has? 512mb? 768mb? 1gb?

    • Jake

768mb from what i have heard

      • Anonymous

So same amount as the TBolt.  I was really hoping for a full 1gb.  I am bound and determined to have my next phone for be dual core, gig of ram, and a 4.3 screen.  That is really i care about.  the FF and 4g would be nice but not a deal breaker

    • http://profiles.google.com/bighugstudio big hug studio

early reports had 1gb ram but could be 768mb now……guess we’ll have to wait and see.

At least its dual core and probably cost less than the samsung charge.

      • Anonymous

Not that it would be hard to cost less then the charge.  $299 ugh.

  • Droid4life ;)

I still use my D1. I’m ready for a new Android powered beast, but the D1 still does everything I need it to do. I am getting sick of the half-@$$ newly released smartphones from Verizon. The obvious reason they’re crippling their Android lineup is so that they don’t kill demand for their precious _phone 4. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but it just makes sense. It’s bull$h!t !! If _phone can’t compete, then they’ll lose market share. I didn’t see anyone making concessions for Windows phones when _phone was released.

So you release Android phones that are technically superior (not necessarily aesthetically, _OS is pretty)… _OS is strong enough to keep its users, fanboys, and die-hard cult members on board. And, as I said, if it’s not- well… That’s free market economics. Let the products battle it out. Don’t make concessions for the “leader” to catch up. Give us our ff cams, dual cores, and whatever Android has to offer!

  • Darat532

Also the app tray at the bottom is the same as on my Droid X 4.588 gingerbread

  • William Wade

Droid one user is getting this one. Had a thunderbolt for a few days but battery life of four hours not reasonable. I use mine for business so movies/games/music hyper downloads are not necessary. I have a Xoom 3g that has all the ‘fun’ factors I need. A dual core 3G Droid with hard keys on bottom, bigger screen, Gingerbread, there is plenty of reason for me to be happy. At the rate the 4G network is going it will be at least two years before 4G for voice is being used and where I live Verizon has the best coverage so I am glad the delay on the Charge kept me from getting another 4G phone to only regret it later. 4G is great if you need the download speed, but 3G is as fast as I need for phone services and all my Google business apps syncing. Some of this wanting tomorrow’s technology today all wrapped up into one phone right now, and including a 4G network that is obviously nowhere near ready, is just a bit of an over reach for reality.

I’m still using my D1 and holding out for the Droid Bionic. There is no sense at all in upgrading to a phone without LTE capability. Why the DX2 does not have LTE is just asinine.

    • Bigsike

      Well put!

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Really since 4g is everywhere right? Oh and battery is so great too on 4g right? Oh and pay an extra 100 dollars for a phone with 4g makes sense right? Get your head out of your ass

    That’s my next phone!

So for those of use waiting to dive into the android phone arena is this the one to get? I would like a phone with a FF camera to try out video chat as it becomes more mainstream but not a deal killer I guess. I have a rooted G-Tablet at the moment and like the idea of running custom ROMs. Is that pretty much out the window for a device with a locked bootloader or what are the limitations associated with that? 4G is not crucial to me as we won’t be getting it where I live for some time to come. Do I wait for the Bionic or is there something else coming down the pipe for Verizon that would meet my wants? I want my BB Storm 9530 to be gone. Please help me android experts! :)

I’m no expert but here’s my two cents. 4g phone isn’t worth it (at least the TBolt) unless your in a big city with 4g and can truly enjoy the speed. FF Cam won’t be main stream for at least a year, I’d think. They’re is just now a big push for FF Cams so many people won’t be getting them for awhile plus you’d need friends and family with phones that had FF Cams to truly enjoy the benefit of it. I can wait a year or so for 4g. I think I’m going to go with the DX2 for my upgrade. So far most of the other Droids have been rooted. I won’t be surprised if this gets rooted within the week it’s released. Love the ROMs and customization that the Dev community puts out and I don’t mind supporting that at all. There ya go, for what it’s worth.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

This phone is a good phone go try it out in the store FCC is overrated. This would be a great phone for some

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000695337479 Ryan Quinn

Who would ever buy this when it doesn’t even have LTE? In two years verizon expects to have coverage everywhere there is 3g now… Plus locked bootloader means no buy from me

In 2 years, everyone that buys this will be eligible for another upgrade anyway.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Your an idiot with comments about 4g being everything when barely anyone has it….plus battery sucks, plus the phone with Ltd radio is 100 dollars more, and 4g outages people like hounded to think before you speak

  • JagoX

Ok so do we know if the DX2 has a locked bootloader? I’m seeing people mentioning it (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is) but has anyone actually *confirmed* if it is locked down or not?

  • Jbrown30314

Fawk the thunderbolt! The drainage on the battery is horrible .. I down graded to the droid x.much halpier

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

I agree I took my thunderbolt back too it was a pos, terrible battery, light leakage list goes on and on

  • Anonymous

So…upgrade to T-Bolt next week or wait a little longer and get the DX2? 4g is not a priority for me since I’m not in a big city where it will be soon but they both look to be beautiful phones.

    • Nkmett15

I would say wait. The T-Bolt would probably have better battery life on 3G only, but that really defeats the purpose of having that phone. If you only have 3G (like me) then I would think this would be the best option.

  • Anonymous

I own a D1 and can not upgrade until July. Im eyeing this as my next phone since 4G will not be in my area until 2012-2013. I really wish Verizon would pimp out more of the higher end phones!

  • BTGGTR1

What about this HDMI mirror mode? This sounds exactly like what LG has on their new phones coming out, with the ability to see your entire phone screen and use it on your HDTV. That sounds like a pretty bad-ass feature to me. Definitely something the old X can’t do.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Would be cool if the video out was different from the screen out. Then you could use it as a portable tv-compatible gaming system and have the screen be your controller.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Has it on the xoom its nice feature

  • Mii

This would be awesome if it was 4g

    • Saa

then it would be a bionic

    • Saa

then it would be a bionic

  • Sethmklein

With the 4g LTE network up & running why is Verizon pushing out phones on 3g Network? Beef up your 4g Lineup!

    • Nkmett15

Well if you haven’t noticed….. alot of people around the country don’t have 4G in their area, myself included, making the 4G capabilities of a 4G phone useless.

  • http://twitter.com/GODROAR Charles Lee

I hope they let me trade in my DROIDX

    • cvorg23

You can get like $100 if you use Verizon’s trade in program.

      • http://twitter.com/GODROAR Charles Lee

OOh nice, I’ll have to check that out. Thanks!

        • http://twitter.com/ChrisJBatson Chris Batson

Sell it on craigslist. You’ll get way more. Just sold my old X for $300.00.

  • Saa

    why isnt this breaking?

ahhhh, its either this or bionic…. i mean, LTE is the sole difference, do i want to wait, or get rid of my crappy BBerry

  • Anonymous

Motorola’s Atrix is actually the first dual-core android beast, not this phone. Even though it runs on another network.
Verizon’s 1st dual-core Android Beast is more accurate. If you don’t count the Xoom that is.

    • Thisguy

      no shit dude

    • Immolate

Atrix on AT&T is like an Indie car on a go-cart track. Like a eunuch with a super-model girlfriend. Like Hendrix with a kazoo…

As long as I get a final GB build for my “current gen” X, I will be more than happy.

  • PyroHoltz

Does the HDMI port support mirroring or are we only able to use Moto’s lame app to output select pictures and music…?

    • Anonymous

More than likely, given this is a minor refresh and Moto being natural prudes, you’ll have to rely on Real HDMI for such needs

      • hkklife

Why do you say that? Mirroring is a basic function of the Tegra 2 chipset and something that all of the other Tegra2 machines do (at least AFAIK). Besides, Moto has already posted on their support site that the X2 allows fullscreen mirroring.

        • Anonymous

Not that I’m calling you a liar, but mind posting a link to said discussion?

    • http://twitter.com/cromag_rickmanu Dan Rickman

Actually it’s full HDMI mirroring. They state it right up in the article above, give it a read!

  • http://twitter.com/fredhoffmann3 Fred Hoffmann

I’m glad I decided on the original X for $25 (CPO Verizon), media dock/car dock for $50 (Amazon), otterbox case for $20 (Amazon) and Google Voice (free texting and visual voicemail!). I’m feelin’ pretty good right now.

  • BTGGTR1

Why would this have 4G? The Bionic will be 4G. This at least gives people a choice if they want a 3G phone or a battery sucking 4G one. I’ll take the 3G thanks.

    • Adam Metzner

Charge has proven that not all 4G phones destroy batterys. Only time will tell….

      • BTGGTR1

That is true…hopefully the newer 4G phones will have that problem under control. I would be pissed if I was a Thunderbolt owner in a 4G area though.

        • Immolate

If you’re technically competent enough to boot you’re not having battery problems on the Thunderbolt, and with this OTA those who aren’t or just aren’t interested in rooting will enjoy the performance and battery performance we’ve been enjoying for quite some time.

          • BTGGTR1

The Thunderbolt is a rushed steaming pile of crap man, I wouldn’t wish that phone on my worst enemy. You shouldn’t have to buy a battery the size of Mt. Rushmore to make it last or screw with the phone rooting/romming to get it to run right. Verizon tried the put 4G into a phone that had already come out in Europe(Desire HD)and should have just kept it 3G, cause it just can’t handle the 4G speeds without sucking massive battery life. 1400MaH battery stock? Ridiculous.

    • Rain_king46

It would have 4G because Verizon is pushing how awesome this LTE network is, yet they have one phone that can use it? whats the point in advertising a product that no one can access?

      • BTGGTR1

I live way outside of any major city, and I won’t be getting 4G for probably two or more years where I live. This gives people like me a choice of having a dual-core phone, with no 4G. I think it’s a good thing. Choices are good.

    • Anonymous

Protop: You can turn 4G off.

      • BTGGTR1

I know, I’ll probably get a Bionic when it’s released and sell the X2. I like gadgets man. lol

      • Anonymous

Consumer tip: You’ll pay $50 to $100 more upfront for a feature you’ll never use and then possibly more down the road in data.

Consumer tip: You’ll pay $50 to $100 more upfront for a feature you’ll never use and then possibly more down the road in data.

  • Dave

I don’t know why people were expecting this to be 4G. The Bionic was always the one meant to be the first dual core LTE device on Verizon.

  • BTGGTR1

I’m grabbing this soon as it comes out. I don’t need 4G, it won’t be in my area for years, and front facing camera? I’ve never had one so it’s no loss. I love my X, this can only be better. I’ll sell my X and buy the X2 retail, and if I like the Bionic I’ll sell the X2 to get that. Can’t wait to get this phone!!

    • chuckles mcnasty

same. no 4G out for at least two years. DX2 is the only dual core handset thats gunna be out til probably late summer, at the earliest. been waiting on my upgrade for way too long. front facing camera would be nice, but not necessary… id rather use my laptop if i’m doing a video chat anyway.

  • Redrogue

    no 4G. what a let down :-(

  • Rain_king46

So pretty much its a DX with a dual core? right? and a SMALLER SD card? no other real upgrades? Oh, and btw Moto, you should be embarrassed to show your blur widgets in your ad. Just sayin.

    • BlindFanboy

why did they cheap out on the SD card? meh

      • hkklife

The OG Droid X launched with a 16Gb Class 4 card. Then a few weeks later they started shipping them with 16Gb Class 2 cards. A few months ago, they reduced the cost by bundling a 2Gb card instead of the 16Gb. However, the X2 will allow ~4.5Gb of the internal space to function as an internal SD card to compliment the external storage card (I think Moto said that ~2Gb remaind for app storage). So the total amount of usable space out of the box on an X2 is about what the X had with a freshly formatted 16Gb card.

I’d personally rather see it launch for a lower price and include NO card since I already have my own 32 & 16GB cards to bring.

    • Rain_king46

Two new phone announcements from VZW today and neither of them compare with the Artix over on AT&T. Come on guys.

Hmmmm 4g i could get by without since we won’t get it here for a long time, but no front facing camera and blur….not sure about that. I REALLY need to replace my OG Droid, it is bugging the hell out of me, but i want a good phone that will last me a long time (like the og droid). Damn you Bionic, come out already!

        • Mike

I’m in the same situation as you is it really that hard for phone companies to offer all those features in one device?

          • Anonymous

I’m also in the same situation, but if Verizon is going to charge an extra fees for the 4G(I can bet they will) and no other phone comes out by June I’ll probably get this one

      • Anonymous

        Man, it’s crazy…

It seems like there are so many people still using D1s. That just goes to show how much VZW’s device lineup fails. Honestly the D1 isn’t even that good of a device. The keyboard is terrible and shouldn’t have even been a selling point. All it has going for it is vanilla Android.

        • Anonymous

I’m still rocking my D1, and it’s the best phone I’ve ever used. Bought it the day it came out and been happy since. Sure, other devices have come out since then that may be “better” but new stuff comes out all the time. Essentially you’re stuck with a phone for 2 years without having to pay a bunch of money to upgrade early, so considering we haven’t hit the 2 year mark for the D1 yet, it shouldn’t be surprising that a lot of people are still using it. And saying it isn’t that good of a device? That’s just wrong.

          • Anonymous

I’m still rocking my D1 as well (as are several friends of mine), though I’m afraid mine is not long for this world (I fear the audio jack is about to fail, and I can’t go without listening to music on my daily train commute). I bought my trusty Droid the day it was released, and am eligible for an ‘additional loyalty discount’ as of 7/6/11.

Waitin on the same thing man….. Till then my D1 still works great even with a busted screen. A D1 rooted and running 2.3.3 with 1.1Ghz kernel equals or bests more phones out there anyway.

          • http://www.facebook.com/john.bjork John Bjork

How do I get my D1 to run 2.3.3 with a 1.1 kernel? I’m just running a rooted stock image but I NEED more power!

          • Anonymous

Clockworkmod from the app market. Then create a backup of your current system In case something goes wrong. Then download a rom, I personal am using cyanogen mod version 7.0.3, it comes stock with a 800mhz kernel but I download the “deprimed kernel” it is 900 mhz but seems to fly. Good luck

          • pkooistra

Liquid Gingerbread v.1.85 is an amazing ROM.  You can load various Kernels.  I am rocking a RZR 2.6.32.9   250-1100 mhz

          • http://profiles.google.com/adclow Aaron Clow

http://www.peteralfonso.com — he’s got an optimized “real Android” build of 2.3.3 and you can download his 1.25Ghz kernel (if your D1 can handle it) and you’re rockin. But even the 600Mhz kernel he uses by default seems way faster than the “normal” kernel. This kept my D1 viable for a long time, but I’m taking the jump on this X2. I was waiting for a dual-core phone with a BIG screen, HDMI out and n wireless (although the most recent press release doesn’t say “N” anymore)… My wife broke her D1, so I’m giving her mine and upgrading. :)

I am NOT “rockin” my D1…. simply using it and waiting for something better with at least dual core CPU, qHD screen, and LTE radio.
This X2 is very tempting. LTE would have put it over the top for me.

That’s easy for you to say after the fact. Like being an Arm Chair Quarterback on a Monday Afternoon!! The D1 set the tone, no wonder it’s still rockin in a lot of peoples hands. But, I do agree with you that Moto gave in the VZW and Moto Blur crap with lockedbootloaders with the follow up devices after the OG D.

The OGD should’ve been the flagship and rockin with great specs, instead we got the D2 Blah, that Star Wars Cereal Box looking phone D2, then the DX great possiblities but HTC came out out with a better device (EVO), and a great design

The Atrix, having problems on AT&T(nice specs) and the Bionic well we won’t go into that mess until it’s released, hopefully sooner or later.I just wish that Moto will learn from their past mistakes. HTC is kicking their ^$$ in the device dept. IMHO

I love my OGD don’t get me wrong, but moto needs to have a home run with the Bionic.I am looking to replace my OGD very quickly and HTC is calling :P

Totally agree, man! I would get another Moto except I don’t like Blur and because of the lack of LTE. A phone with Sense seems to be the way to go at this point…SOOOOO SMOOOOTH!!!

Once you said the Evo was a better device(than the DX) I stopped reading.

I really feel that HTC’s design team has also beaten Moto to the punc. The
Atrix and the Bionic both are ugly and just plain ordinary looking. Iknow
it’s more of whats inside that counts, butman it’s great to have a device
            thats sexy w/ Brains lol

My keyboard is great (but my buttons are rounded and not flat like some peoples)

My speed is faster than my Droid 2
My RAM is higher than my Droid 2 My quadrant is higher than my Droid 2 (though not by much)

go to a droid eris then go back to your droid and youll think the best phone ever. the keybaords good why you complaining

Exactly what I’m thinking. The Samsung Galaxy S II is looking pretty good right now.

Sorry Moto. It was a great ride. A lot of interesting experiences with my first Android device, but, in the end, just frustrating as hell with your damned LOCKED BOOTLOADER and shitty MotoBlurgh.

I guess that means somehow they forgot to contact you before making the phone. Damn corporations not targeting every phone to the opinionated blogger!

No FF camera was the killer. Otherwise this would be preordered by me immediately

Why does everyone want a front facing camera so bad!!!!!!!!!???? How often would you really use it for it to be a deal breaker???

Told you is was coming the 26th and not the 12th. The LG Revolution was meant to be launched then too, but do to the Droid Charge being delayed you wont see the Revolution for a bit.
