HTC Thunderbolt Ads Removed from YouTube, New $699 Price, and Delays Now Due to Short Battery Life?

Another wonderful weekend for the HTC Thunderbolt, eh?  Let’s see if we can sort of summarize everything that just happened in a couple of quick paragraphs since writing about it has become more of a chore than anything.  After all, this device is quickly becoming the world’s most controversial when it was originally supposed to be a world’s first.

So let’s start with the rumors coming out of the Engadget news room which claim that battery issues are to blame for all of these delays.  Apparently, testers are seeing 3 to 4 hours of battery life with the LTE radio turned on and so far no fixes have been successful.  There is supposed to be a firmware update coming in the near future and it will address these issues, but who knows how long it’ll take to test it and then make it available to end users.  This story actually makes a little bit of sense, especially when we look back and see that four different HTC RUU’s for the device have leaked out since December.

The second bit of news has to do with the TBolt ads which have been live on Verizon’s YouTube channel for almost a week now.  All of them are now set to private and can no longer be viewed in any capacity including the rooftop spot.  We thought that all issues with the device had been figured out once they had 2 different ads running on TV, but now that both have been pulled, it’s hard to believe the device is going to be here any time soon.

And the last bit of news is pretty random, but actually comes off as positive if it ends up sticking.  We had a few tipsters submit the picture you’ll see below which is of a shopping cart on HTC’s site with the Thunderbolt inside of it.  The $699 price is the real story here, especially after seeing $749 from Best Buy over and over again and actually almost had us cracking a miniature smile.

Some day we’ll have good news abouts this phone, but it doesn’t sound like it will be this week.

Cheers Louis, Mike, Cameron, asdf and all others!

The rumor is the negotiations with EA are going better than expected for this to be the official phone of NBA Elite 11.

i just want a god damn phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me like HTC did a rush job on this thing to get it out in the wild for the public to drool over. I’ve never been impressed with HTC’s hardware really, always feels kinda cheap or something.
I don’t see it as they’re working the bugs out or optimizing hardware. I see it as they threw together a pile of crap and are trying to get it to barely work good enough to release. No thanks!

    • Tim242

This phone has been workedon and leaked since August. So, I don’t think it is being rushed.

  • Jalenmike

Battery life is no new issue, any new or recently purchased phone like Evo, or any other smart phone all have this issue for some time now. This is no different. I understand even the Bionic is having the same issues and its not even out yet.

NO google has said they will have to get 2.4 to be able to use dual-core

  • Anonymous

I agree with Cory….but you also know while that second core is running…..it won’t be helping with motolag…..oh sorry i meant motoblur lag. The second core is mainly for gaming and only usable in android 2.3….so ill take my awesome tbolt over that blur crap.

i was at the verizon store today and was looking at the dummy model. i asked when it would come out and they said march fifth but like a week ago i asked another verizon store and they said feb. 25th. i told the 2nd store that and they said it was moved back but that it would not be moved back again. MARCH 5TH PEOPLE! GET TO YOUR VERIZON STORES!

    • Perwilly

But that’s a Saturday? VZW has never released anything on a saturday, bro. I think they’re playing ya.

So is mine, but a locked bootloader is absolutely unacceptable. Motorola said “if you want custom roms buy a different brand”. And that’s exactly what ill do. The unlocked xoom does give me hope for the bionic, but if I had to guess it’ll be locked too.

Wow, this, now even more, overpriced Inspire is getting ridiculous. You get 2-3 hours of battery life with occasional use.

I went to Best Buy and got my money back, they were saying they didn’t know if they could give me my money back for me to use the gift card on something else i said i do NOT shop here but i wanted to free buy back now that is not i’ll take my money to VZW. And save $30 bucks of the price with the NE2 i Still have

  • Jroc869

FAIL! The Bionic win pwn this phone

    • http://www.facebook.com/corygimbert Cory Gimbert

your saying that now. but i can assure you that it will still suffer from crap battery life aswell. not to far from the thunderbolts. my resion is its also got a 4G radio witch is obviously a battery hog. and on top of that its got a dual core processor. also battery hungry. and still got a qHD 4.3 inch screen. thats 1930mah battery may seem big, but isnt going to be all that. i cant see this phone lasting throughout the day. but performance will be great (once android can use dualcore).

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

You know dual core are more battery efficientt

        • Anonymous

actually they aren’t. They aren’t even usable until android 2.3….and only usable in gaming.

          • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Motor already put a press release saying they tweaked 2.2 to fully optimize both cores

And if that’s not enough just look at some reviews of theatrix

          • Tim242

Moto also said that each core is 1 ghz, which is not true! Btw, if it were more battery efficient, they wouldn’t have put such a huge battery in it.

  • Anonymous

Good luck and good riddance. I switched to the vip4 and will revisit android in the summer if the lte devices are better than iOS and iPhone 5. Makes me sad because in loved my og droid and dinc but I needed something that would let me voice chat with my family. Was really looking forward to the tb, but coildnt wait any longer.

Hmm…..so did the people who were on this page get to order it? It says proceed to checkout and i still can’t find out how to get there soo…..anyways i still got my thunderbolt pre order on ebay for 629 from a verizon employee selling his pre order…and he still doesn’t know the date…which again sucks….id rather have my phone now with a crap battery than never…..

  • kw

Lol also that explains why they had to have lightning charge the phone and what exactly is a thunderbolt? I’ve herd of thunder and lightningbolt but Thunderbolt?

  • (v)urphy

How is it that a XOOM is about as equal in price as a phone? I’m not understanding that.

  • Cunthole

If you’re not getting the phone you’re a cunt!!!!

  • Anonymous

    Xoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom

  • kw

Im guessing this is why they call it the Thunderbolt because those use up a lot of energy…and most people that say they give up will get the phone anyways when it comes out lol stupid people jumping on the bandwagon

  • Mike

I’ve continuously wondered why people want 4G so bad already if battery technology isn’t able to handle it yet. The faster data speeds aren’t worth it if your phone is dead in a few hours.

  • Batcopter54321

They need to get this thing working soon. It is featured in the March 6th Best Buy ad on the back cover. Reg price $749.99

  • Mth2134

Glad I never once considered this phone. Prob in the minority on that but I prefer to wait with LTE. Just doesn’t feel quite complete yet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bhaxprime Ben Hackney

I still find this all a bit of convenience and they’re just trying to move i*hone4 units that they’ve committed to sell and no one is buying…awfully convenient set of happenings me thinks.

  • ChriswithaConscience

Hi there, I’m new to the android world, and don’t consider myself a techie per se, but I am still interested in tech news. One thing I am not, however, is a mindless, hapless consumer. I was very excited for the Thunderbolt, thinking it would be the end-all-be-all of smartphones for quite some time (when I read reports prior to launch). I have been filled with nothing but disgust regarding the delays, rumors, errors, and problems with this phone though. Droidlife, and its readers, should dismiss this phone from ANY consideration for consumption. If the phone doesn’t work right, and something as elementary as the battery is flawed, why present it as “ready to rock-n-roll” at CES? This kind of marketing just shows that we as consumers are mindless and drool over tech stuff, waiting to get our hands on the “next greatest thing.” We as consumers need to say “well, we WERE really excited for this phone, but HTC/Verizon/Google are just diddling on getting it to the public, so we will move on to the other great lineup of phones. Don’t debut a product at an elec show unless it’s legit; consumers have the purchasing power.” As long as the phone keeps getting delayed, and Droidlife continues to update every spec of information about it, what does HTC/Verizon/Google care? They’ve sucked you in and kept you as submissive, obedient dogs to buy their product no matter how long they make you wait. Total joke. The Thunderbolt should be boycotted.

    • Yourestupid

Technically the phone hasn’t been delayed. There was never a release date announced by verizon, google, or htc. The only thing that was said by any of the parties was that it would be released in the first quarter, or q1. Most consumers are mindless, that’s the only thing you have stated correctly. Would you want a half baked product. I know I dont. So wait until a release date is announced then, then judge.

      • ChriswithaConscience

Well, however you want to justify begging on your knees waiting for it to come out is fine with me. I’m not stupid (as your name refers), I’m just wanting these mega corporations to treat consumers with a little respect through their products. It’s not ready? Battery is no good? This is as lame as Apple saying they didn’t know about the antenna problem. Note to HTC/Verizon: get the phone figured out systemically and mechanically, test it on the network, and THEN announce it to consumers. The instant consumers say “we know you put $300 million into designing this phone, and we really wanted it when you debuted it two months ago, but this is an insult on my purchasing power. Present me a new great product when I can actually buy it.”

FYI – BB really does have the Thunderbolt in their ad today. The delay IS official – you can’t buy it and take it home today. They want you to put down a deposit (aka interest-free-loan) so you can wait…..and wait……and wait……just like a dog being told to stay

        • MEstupid

That’s Best Buys add, not HTC, Verizon, or Google. If a store wants to jump the gun that’s on them. Officially, I’m saying officially as a Verizon employee, a release date from us was never given. Let me check all my emails and, nope, a day is not mentioned from us. Bad battery life on 4g, yes, release date, no. So let’s not get all riled up on this one.

          • Tim242

If you were truly a Verizon employee, you would know that Verizon reps direct Best Buy. They visit daily. Best Buy didn’t just pull a preorder and release date of 2/14 out of their asses.

          • blootz

            +1

          • Anonymous

Febrero was promised. Besides, couldn’t Verizon coordinate a little better with their “exclusive retailer” best buy and make sure they’re on the same page? Yes they sure could. Where do you think best buy has been getting these release dates from? The Pope?

        • Scottpimpsta

I agree w/ chriswithaConsience. Just ridiculous. Verizon controls when BB puts those adds out. I still can’t believe they didn’t put the hdmi output on it. What a joke! They know what we like, so why short us on it. New phones and software updates every 6 month that your phone might not get. Sucks! Iphone 5? I might just wait u.

      • CaptainObvious

It’s pretty obvious that the Thunderbolt has been delayed from what Verizon had originally intended. There ARE such things as deadlines for projects, products, tasks, goals, etc. HTC, Verizon and any company wouldn’t start making a product without a schedule with specific milestones in the time line.

        • Dreamliner

This is what happens when leaks occur. Internal deadlines are announced. Those deadlines pass because of bad engineers, bad managers, bad scheduling, bad testing or whatever the reason is then people get angry. That’s why some companies do all they can to prevent leaks or only provide controlled “leaks.” Seems like Verizon and HTC are doing a bad job in all those aspects.

          • Anonymous

How do you explain Best Buy?

          • ActionJackson

Verizon obviously has a say in what Best Buy does. So it goes back to what was said earlier: “bad engineers, bad managers, bad scheduling, bad testing.”

          • GG

Or, could it be.. bad PRODUCT??

      • AnimationB

I would want a half-baked product with correcting firmware and updates on the way, rather than no product at all.

    • Josh

you are also not a very good business man. You are blaiming HTC, Verizon, and Google. Well all Google does is provide the softwear, so its not their fault that this phone is “delayed.” Don’t blame Verizon either. It’s not their fault that HTC can’t get their act together. And Verizon is also doing what’s best for the customer by not allowing a phone to be released that has so many flaws at this point. Verizon nor HTC have never put out an official release date, therefore everything that you have seen on this site is a RUMOR! Verizon stated that it would be released in the first quater which means they have one month to get this phone out. I would like to see you produce a phone that is this powerfull.

  • tommyz

It’s starting to sound like it might be time to shelve this phone. Are they seriously just now figuring out that there is horrible battery life with LTE turned on? How does that happen?

    • Jawshua

Yeah that was my first reaction. How are they now just finding out about the battery!? That’s ridiculous! What happened to extensively testing a phone before putting it up for release? Oh, that’s right, I forgot the bottom dollar corrupts and controls all.

Everyone is new to the internet at some point and even if they aren’t, there are plenty of netizens who have not used a forum or don’t even know what a forum is. And of course forums aren’t the first place DMs were used, although it is the first place I’ve seen that term used.

(not that I don’t wholeheartedly agree, but devil’s advocate here) The locked bootloader means no custom kernels, which are important for getting some ROMs to work (Notably AOSP ROMs like CyanogenMod). It also pretty much means you’ll have to wait around for Motorola to push software updates instead of just flashing a ROM with the newest version of Android.

Now personally, I have a Nexus S for all that, but if I didn’t I might be a bit more concerned about it.

  • Anonymous

I have read many of these stories claiming “battery life is so bad that testers have had to carry around a second phone.” Wouldn’t it make more sense to just carry around an extra battery? Doesn’t this seem strange to anyone? This launch is a failure. And I don’t want to hear anyone say “how could it be a failure if they haven’t even mentioned a release date”. Because their commercial said febrero, and the ceo of htc was saying the phones were shipped. And then you got best buy claiming all these dates. Like Verizon couldn’t reach out to them and set them strait. After all, bb is supposed to be the exclusive retailer.

    LTE: Long Term Evolution

At least VZW got that name right. It does, indeed, take a LONG time for the Blundertholt to EVOlve from its Sprint beginning. It has evolved to extinction from my wishlist.

  • Motta2003

At this point since the data plan is supposedly the same price as we’re currently paying, I’d take the phone to use on 3G and wait for a fix. Granted not the correct way to engineer something and this should have been weeded out far before teasing the crap out of us with a supposed release timeframe (Q1). I just need to get rid of my BB Storm! Viva La Android!

  • Raptor007

I was in the Verizon store and while they did not have a firm date, the Manager did confirm they heard that battery life was the cause. They have been told March 3rd and 10th but they were not optimistic.

On a side note the mgr did allow me to check out the dummy unit and I have to say size, weight and over all feel are on the mark. Now if they could just resolve the battery OR, ship it with the 2750mAh for FREE at least we could get 6-8 hours on 4G LTE and push out a fix later on. Otherwise this will NOT be the first 4G LTE phone or worse yet push back all other launches.

    • Tim242

3rd and 10th…sound familiar? iphone preorder on the 3rd, released on the 10th. Coincidence? I think not! Poor iphone sales caused this…not a battery issue. This phone has been in development since summer. They didn’t just discover battery issues right at time of release The battery issue is just a rumor. You people bash people for believing rumored release dates, then you believe rumored delayes release date reasons…

  • http://www.bobschwartz.net/ BSchwartz

Does HTC even make an Android phone that cannot be described as having horrible battery life? It would be more of story if they released a phone that had decent battery life…

    • Raptor007

Given no one else has REAL 4G out I think throwing rocks at glass houses is a bit unfair. We have yet to see if Moto, Samsung or LG can do any better and more importantly it could just be the network causing the issue as much as the phone.
