DROID X 2.2.1 Update Will Be Available Tonight? (Updated)

We just received a tip mentioning that the Android 2.2.1 update which will bring the Droid X up to system version 2.3.340 (not Gingerbread) could start tonight (12/7) around midnight.  We do know that the update information came out yesterday and Verizon has done a good job of keeping these under wraps lately until they are ready to go, so this wouldn’t surprise us.

And remember that Blur on the Droid X allows you to “pull” updates, so at midnight EST tonight, you can start going to Settings>About Phone>System Updates to check.

Update 6:31PM:  Motorola Feedback Network members with a Droid X will get the update early tonight as a test group.  If that goes well, the majority of the rollout should happen within the next few days just as the original Droid FRG83D update did.  (Cheers to everyone who sent in their MFN emails!)

Stay tuned…

Cheers Aaron!

  • Wkosonen

    Got mine!

  • Jawshua

Haha what you should write is, if you live in certain places you might get the update, don't make it sound like just if you have a DROIDX you'll get it when it's ready cause that's BS!

Took forever for me to get Froyo and I live in a large city. Stupid Verizon!

  • One_ina_milli

Go pull the update its out!

  • Sashchs

got the update like 30 min ago and my internet will not work. anyone else have this problem/know how to fix this?

    • civt

its not from the update. other people been experiencing this too

  • Lists

Another hour and 15 minutes or so and it will be in the data stream. Barring any major problems about 1000 users will get the update tonight.

  • insider

You wont be able to pull till friday only push

  • Matthewfblanco

Owwwww baby! Just got mine 10 min ago

    • DroidXWins

did you check for new or was it pushed? I got the email and am still waiting…

  • Jonny

just got an update on my Droid (not X) – not sure what's new though…

  • Chickensaftereggs

Just send it. I mean really what is this all about. If I'm verizon, I hear this rumor, I squash it. If I'm verizon and its not a rumor…push the damn thing!!!! Sick of the bugs on this device. My service costs me what I could buy a small car for. The device itself is over $400 if I have to buy it out right. Come on Verizon!!!

  • Lists

Be patient… another couple of hours or so. I'm fairly certain it's push only tonight so trying to pull it won't work. Make sure the X is either on the charger or on standby with a full battery.

    • When I tried a pull about 15 minutes ago it said the system was down. So pulling might not work and the push might be starting? I am in the MFN but didnt get the email. Really hoping it comes anyway, push or pull.

  • DroidXWins

Has anyone who has gotten the email been pushed the update yet?

  • Brttwrd

Lol awww sh*t, im running fission, wen i go to system updates, i only get a blank screen for eternity. i just got settled in too haha im guessing its cuz im blurless.

btwfyi, my dx hit 300m wen i first got it the week it was released, then the first update came and i culdnt go higher than 300. until i installed fission, my average ram dropped to the point that i.nvr went higher than 250. i hope dx gingerbread gets that fixed. evn bttr, this froyo? update hopefully fixes that. i likez mah ramz

  • Ad0131065

    No update for me 🙁

  • Brian

  • Stevo760

    No update 9:00:1 figures

    • Darrin16

yeah. No update. Why do I believe everything I read. :/

    • Brttwrd

ru on the feedback test group? only they get it and IF it goes well, the rest of it get it a few days later. read the update ^^^^

  • Lists

Also if you're rooted or have the leaked patch I don't think you'll receive the push tonight, but I'm not sure.

  • Lists

The update tonight is PUSH only from what I'm told. It won't be pushed for about 2 1/2 more hours. Only selected users will receive the update tonight.

  • Hampton

I still can't get the 2.2 update.. Any ideas?. Its frustrating the hell out of me.. My phone says it is up to date but running 2.1 -update1 . Also if 2.2.1 comes availible will i be ok to upgrade from what i have to 2.2.1 or is it a step process where I would have to have 2.2 before 2.2.1

    • Brttwrd

i can only infer ur still stuck on that leak from forevr ago that culd only b undone thru sbf flashing. u need to giv mor info. ru talking about the first or second froyo leak? or ru talking about something different

      • Mikeyland73

If I am still running 2.1.1 will I still get the 2.3.340 or do I have to upgrade to 2.3.15 before I can get the new update? Im not rooted

        • Brttwrd

as long as u r not on a leak version, u shuld b able to recieve this update one way or another. seeing as how they r messing with the update service now, im not sure if u culd update now to the current froyo version and then wen the new one comes out u can get it. but if not then ull find out how itll go down later. im sure if it does one giant jump, ur phone will b down for awhile cuz itll hav ALOT of ui and system changes to deal with.

bottomline: in my own opin8on, i wuld say u will b able to get the newest froyo version

    • how is 2.1 update 1 up to date? the rest of us are running 2.2

      • Brttwrd

actually the rest of us r on the early 2.3 waiting for the next 2.3 😉

  • Brttwrd

so i forget… does this mean unrooted?

  • px9023

How do you subscribe to moto feedback?

  • demonofthesword

Yay finally something I wrote in about, even if I wasn't the only to do so…

  • DroidXWins

“Check for update is not available at this time” …should be soon!

  • Scottbroe

I just signed up for moto feedback…will i get the update?

    • DroidXWins

check your email to see if you were chosen

  • DroidXWins

Got my email… now slowly watching the clock, waiting for the update….

  • Tuna

I got the message, but I have JRumm X installed so I'm out for now I guess.

  • George Straight

When I try tried to check if the system update was out for the Droid X my phones said, “System update” is not available without a Motorola service account. What does that mean. I am rooted.

    • Brttwrd

it means the update service is down cuz ther probably readying it for the update 😉

  • NeoTheOne

Yeah, I got the email a few hours ago.

  • Jme2712

Just got the email from MOTO. They will be sending this out tonight…

  • Dropmaki0

just got an email from Motorola feedback network saying the droid x final testing software of a new update will be pushed tonight for review.

  • guest

    C'mon c'mon c'mon….

  • Jeff

About time… 2.2 has been quite a disaster for me since it came out. Hope this fixes all the problems i've been having!:)

  • cdmoore74

About to reload my stock 2.2 OTA rom from backup. I already miss Rubix!!! Glad I did not upgrade to any of the leaks but hopefully you guys that did will not run into any problems. I'll wait and see if being rooted will cause any problems. Don't care if I lose root, I just don't want to brick the phone.

  • Droid X Rules!

  • Gotta be close, Matt in the Moto X forums has the threads started for updates…

  • Lancerlot7

can i unroot with z4root and reroot after the update.

  • Freshgeardude

    Check for update is down.

Maybe they are loading the servers up 🙂

    • Aaron

Im still getting “your device is up to date”

  • Inept

At the risk of sounding truly dopey, all I want is to be able to download Adobe flash player on my Samsung Fascinate. Will this be possible?

  • dannyjedi

I am going to file this under the who cares bin.

    Yay, more bloat ware!

  • kellex

If you are running 2.2.1 leak, you will not be able to downgrade and then update to this new build. We will have a fix for you though. Be patient. 🙂

And if you are just simply rooted, you can upgrade no problem but you will likely lose your root access.

    (Please “like” this comment.)

    • Thanks!

    • Barlog

I unrooted but my DX still boots up in the bootstrap recovery? Will I get the update ok? And if not how do I get bootstrap to go away?!

    • KleenDroid

Kellex… I swear nobody reads your posts. It seems the same questions keep getting asked over and over again even though you answered them.

      • Ery

I swear, your comment is as useless as this one!

        • KleenDroid

    • My droid x is rooted with z4, i have bootstrap, i also have titatanium backup (and it is freezing a bunch of apps) as well as dx overclocker. What do I need to do in order to upgrade? And do I need to worry about bricking my phone? (I do NOT have any custom ROMs)

Also, I am not sure if this is for the general public as I received the e-mail from motorola as one of their software testers and in the e-mail it says that it will be beta tested by us before being released..

      • I had rooted with z4, I did NOT unroot. I ran the update this morning with no problem. Root IS taken away in the process.

      • Texasmade Eddie

when you rooted your phone, what update were you on?

    • Bthomasltd

LIKE! you are correct. My update came this morning and my root is now gone. will need to re-root. 🙁 oh well.

  • Chris

im running the leaked 2.2.320 SBF file now. will i be able to update to this?

    • ndog21

  • Lieffring

If i have the 928 droid theme will i half to un theme first? to get update or will it brick me if i dont?

  • Davidukfl

anyone know how this will work with clockwork recovery?

  • Justin

So if I'm rooted I can search for it? Is it worth it to get it right away? Because once you go through with it you can't go back right?

  • eh?

weeeweeee.. What if I'm rooted? Will this work with the leak? What if i'm on rubiX, can I still update? What if I have an iPhone, can I still pull this update? What if my old VCR needs some love, will it work?

    • Thomriddle

yes to all of the above…enjoy!

      • eh?

        Awesome! Thanks Moto & Thomriddle!

    • ndog21

  • Higher_Ground

even if this does remove root I'd bet on the z4root team restoring it before the end of the week

    • Does that mean we CAN install the OTA on a rooted device, it'll just end up unrooted?

    • Sschaper

I'd like to think so, but they haven't got it working on the Droid yet, and they've had quite a lot longer.

  • viewthis66

when the DX finally gets 2.3 will the notification bar be black NS is showing or will Motorola override that with the ugly light gray that's there now?

    DX non-rooted

  • Bob Cu

will i need to backup my data before i update? and also, do i need to reinstall all the apps that i have downloaded?

    • Nope, everything will be as is when your phone reboots from the install.

      • Bob Cu

        Thank you, sir!

  • Mps623

Hopfully once this comes out we will get that “certain” file pretty quick. 🙂

  • One question: If I am rooted (only for two apps: Wireless Tether and DroCap) can I just install this OTA as normal or should I unroot first?

    • Anonymous

If you are only rooted you will be able to get the update no problem. Of course you will lose root.

    • I've Asked That Question Before About My Original Droid And The Answers I Got Were That A Custom ROM Are Usually Better Than The Official Updates.

Misread The Question, If You're Only Rooted Then I'd Wait To See If They Gain Root Access With The New Update.

      • The update takes precedent over the root. I just wanna know if I CAN update while rooted. Whether I lose root or not is irrelevant to me.

        Thanks, Mike!

        • You're Welcome Matt And To Be Honest I Don't Know If Being Rooted Allows For Updates But I Do Know That A Custom ROM Will Not Allow The Update.

          • Barlog

What if I unrooted but my phone still boots up in the bootstrap recovery? Will I be able to update ok?

          • From The Other Comments/Posts I Would Assume Yes. If Any Problems Arise Just Come Back And Tell Your Story/Problem And I’m Sure People Will Be More Than Willing To Help.

          • Great, thanks 🙂

          • Hey Mike thanks for the Info, was wondering is I use the Leaked 2.2.320 SBF. Will I get the update!?!?

  • Alex

    will i need to unroot?

    • Mkelleygcsi

I would recommend unrooting, you can pull the update after unrooting very easily. I am positive that at most 24 hours will go by and the developers will have the new update implemented into their ROM's. z4root will most likely work right off the bat with this update also. You might as well just unroot if you want this update.
