Since April of this year, we’ve known about an upcoming Pixel 11 series featured that Google had referred to as “Pixel Glow.” This was described in an early beta as being a new notification system that would work alongside some sort of light. We hoped for a big lighting system that surrounded the entire Pixel 11 phone camera bar, but recent images from Google suggest it might just be the camera flash that has multi-color capabilities.
Today, a developer with a strong history of providing inside info on Android projects, suggested that Google will actually call it “HiLight.” So, Pixel Glow might not have made it through the marketing team and we’ll instead refer to the Pixel 11 series lighting system as HiLight.
The Tweet from @evowizz says that they can “confirm the Pixel 11 ‘Pixel Glow’ feature won’t be called like that,” and it will instead “be called HiLight.”
A brief and dirty search through Google to try and find references to this word came up empty, so we’ll have to take their word for it.
Recapping this feature a bit further, a description within Android 17 said the following:
Stay in the moment without losing touch. [Pixel Glow] uses subtle light and color on the back of your device to inform you of important activity when it’s face down.
Clearly, Pixel Glow was a placeholder there as a name, but I kind of liked it. HiLight could be a play on the words Hi and Light, as if your phone is saying “Hi” to you with its light. I get it, but it’s odd not seeing it have Pixel branding.
