When Google releases new Pixel phones, they have always been open and upfront about the number of years they plan to provide support. For the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, we’ve known that October 2026 could be the end and today, Google confirmed exactly when the last big update will drop.
As a part of today’s Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 release, Google announced that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would not be a part of this beta program. They won’t be a part of it because they will each reach End of Life status with Android 17 QPR1.
Backing up a bit, we do need to point out that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were always supposed to at least see security updates through October 2026. However, back in 2024, Google expanded their number of years of OS updates through that same October 2026 date, giving them an extra 2 years.
But now we know that Android 17 QPR1 will be the last big update (at least of the quarterly level) for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Android 17 QPR1 is expected to go stable and release to Pixel devices in September 2026. Since Google has these devices supported through October, we could see another security patch then before they are cut off.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have essentially been dropped to an unconfirmed quarterly update schedule within the past year. We’ve tracked their odd update situation in order to help owners of these devices understand if their phones are getting updates each month or not.
To recap, Google said today that, “Pixel 6 and 6Pro users will not be getting [QPR2 Beta 1] OTA since the device will reach End of Life and Android 17 QPR1 beta series will be the last for these devices.”
