  • I have a worry and a suggestion. My worry is that it may falsely identify and not ring through some numbers as scams that are not, and that I may actually want to receive calls from. Sort of the equivalent to a false positive in security software. My somewhat unrelated suggestion is that T-Mobile should have a way for customers to report scam numbers that actually do come through. After getting X number of reports for a specific number they could add it to their database. Scammers are getting smarter, and many calls are now being made on cell phones by actual people not just automated calling. this might help reduce the number of people getting around the current system this way. Just my thoughts.

  • Dialed the #662# and got “Server Failure”, but less than an hour later got a call from an unknown number that was labelled as “Scam Likely” and auto-rejected after the 2nd ring, so I guess it’s working.

  • Your article says “Available to all T-Mobile customers”, but the quote from T-Mobile says only for the higher priced rate plans.

  • I use the Google Dialer as my default and when they added the ability to report scammers, I immediately noticed more and more showing up in that warning red color and it’s great. Having T-Mo doing this on top of having Google’s Phone app installed, I really hope they stop calling.

It seems like over the last 6 months, I get 1-2 scammers a week calling me. It’s ridiculous. And it’s probably only going to get worse now that everyone can freely sell our info. #ThanksTrump

  • This whole Scam/Spam thing does have it’s pitfalls! For example, LEGITIMATE companies (such as mine) who’s number(s) are being flagged by disgruntled/ignorant people. This can seriously affect business and your reputation – WHY!? Because there’s no way to get yourself OFF THAT LIST(S)! How can you let the general public dominate and determine how your business phone number shows up to the WORLD, and you have no legal recourse against it, or to rectify the situation??? There needs to be proper channels to fix mistakes or wrongly identified numbers!

    • So get a new number. Why would you even entertain the possibility of being lumped into that group. Call your provider and get new numbers. It’s obviously a huge hassle but if your business really is suffering, then it would be worth it in the long run.

      • That would be like telling FedEx to stop using 1-800-GO-FEDEX. After a while, your number becomes part of your identity. It’s not as easy to just up and change when you’ve been in business for nearly 20 years, with the same phone numbers, etc. It’s a huge PR and Marketing thing to do if you have to change your identity. Yes, that’s a solution to the current issue, but doesn’t stop it from happening again in the future – and thus negating the huge effort it took to change the number in the first place. If someone doesn’t want to be contacted, that’s why we have the National DNC Registry and legal fines if you do not follow it. THIS IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. People should not be able to negatively affect your reputation and identity without legal recourse. If someone files a complaint with the BBB, you have the ability to fight it and give your side of the story, and clear your name. So far, we have not been able to figure out how to combat this issue – and that’s not good.

        • If you’re as big as FedEx you wouldn’t be having the issue in the first place.

If you’re as big as FedEx and you’re having this issue, then you should have a department in place that can write a letter or make a phone call to your local FCC people and get them to get it removed from these lists.

Also, I’m sure it takes more than one customer reporting your number to end up getting blocked. If you’ve bothered/harassed enough people to make these lists, then your business strategy needs some work.

          • Never claimed to be that big. Just using it as a reference. We have several million people in our databases. We have helped hundreds of thousands of people (read: Happy Customers). We are not harassing people. We are helping people. We you have that large of a customer base, or database, it doesn’t take a large % to flag you – for whatever THEIR reason might be. Some people are legitimately crazy or easily irritable. You can’t avoid coming into contact with that when you deal with the general public. It’s not a business strategy flaw, it’s a new “thing” that’s trying to help people that was not thoroughly thought out properly. I’m all for SCAM protection, but not being able to fight wrongly identified Spam flagging doesn’t seem legal. I don’t think it takes many people. Maybe just one person to make you flagged as “potential”. That’s BS.

          • No. We are an International business. We have customers from all over the world. But we primarily do USA.

          • That’s tough maybe you should look into a image consulting company, they can offer some help I would think.

    • Why are you using your incoming line as your outgoing number? Fedex doesn’t call customers using the 1-800-GO-FEDEX number. If your company gets customers upset enough to flag you as spam, I think you need to change your business practices anyways.

      • We have different divisions… Some use the main, some do not. For different reasons. But mainly, if that’s the number you are used to calling, or have stored in your phone, then you know who’s calling. If you have some random number calling you – do you always answer the phone? Most people would say no. And also, more and more, if people don’t recognize the number, they might be more inclined to just flag it as spam because they don’t care. Why should they. Doesn’t bother them at all. Still, once again, has nothing to do with business practices. It has all to do with the general population being able to directly impact something that doesn’t belong to them, or are not affiliated with. How do you think we get things named Boaty McBoat Face… People just don’t care when it does not directly affect them. Tap tap, done. Out of their mind. Number flagged.

        • Leave a message and you don’t get flagged as spam. Any unknown number that calls me and does not leave a message gets marked as spam by me.

          • That is a horrible way to go about things. There could be COUNTLESS reasons why someone doesn’t leave a message… That’s highly irresponsible of you.

      • Wow, ok, have it your way. I guess your Doctor won’t call you with your results. Your dentist won’t call you to remind you of your appointment. Your bank won’t call you to check on suspected fraud on your account. H&R Block won’t call you to ask you questions about your tax return. Your college won’t call you about a mistake on some of your transcripts. Your BOSS won’t call you. Your Mom won’t call you from work. Your cell phone company won’t call you to let you know your data plan has been dropped and you need to switch plans. Gee, I guess you’ll just magically have and know EVERYTHING you need without ANY company calling you. EVER. Yep. Great plan. Let me know how that works out for you.

        • Ha ha I get text messages from my doctor leaving appointment information no strange calls or numbers needed nice try though SMH

    • Agreed. It doesnt matter if i get a call from my dentist, lawn care, internet provider, bank or credit card company – it all shows as suspected spam caller. Imagine if it auto blocked my dentist confirming appointments. My bank telling me my mortgage is late. My credit card company trying to notify me of suspect purchases. Eventually every single number will be a suspected spam caller.

      • EXACTLY! This issue is growing exponentially and it seems like they just took a shot in the dark and were like, hey this sounds like a great idea!!! Wrong.

  • Doesn’t the Google Phone app do this too? I’ve seen numbers come up that the phone app shows as a spam number. Double filtering is welcomed.

    • It only identifies them, this will also block them from coming to your phone all together if you wish.

      • The Google Phone app lets you block numbers. I have some blocked that call regularly. They always leave 10 second silent voicemails. I don’t get the call but I still get the voicemails that I have to go in and delete. I wonder if this will just block them all together. Voicemails and all.

        • The difference is this blocks them so they don’t ring your phone in the first place.

    • I was looking into this one. Does that take over your dialer, or does it compliment the existing dialer?

  • I’d be wary that everything blocked is in fact a scam. I had a call from a mortgage lender flagged as possible spam recently when my wife and I were looking for mortgage quotes.

    • Did you ask that lender to call you? Because lots of spam calls are about mortgage lenders offering new rates.

    • Was going to say the same. Been using Hiya (formerly Whitepages) for quite a while. Works very well. That along with the native screening in the stock dialer on my Pixel serves me pretty well.
