Verizon Completes 5G Radio Specs, Now Onto Field Trials

After working with Verizon’s 5G Technology Forum, which is a group of global operators, parameters have been defined for 5G specifications in advance of future standards. To break that down in simple terms, Verizon has now outlined guidelines to test and validate crucial 5G technical aspects. This leads to compliant chipset manufacturing and a slew of other important developments.

To give you a sense of what Verizon is shooting for with 5G, end users will enjoy a wireless network that delivers several gigabits per second throughputs and single-millisecond latencies. Think of it like Google Fiber, but for your smartphone.

Verizon has published the specification document for all to see, if you’re interested.

According to Adam Koeppe, Vice President Network Technology Planning (lead of the 5G trials), “The level of collaboration that we are seeing exceeds what we saw during 4G. This agile way of developing the specification and working with the ecosystem will enable us to get to market rapidly.”

While all of this is groovy, we as customers only care about when Verizon and other companies will make 5G available to us. The good news is, Verizon has begun field testing 5G in real-world locations, including areas in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Texas. Working with companies such as Samsung, Cisco, and Qualcomm, Verizon hopes that by working with as many partners as possible, they can more quickly deploy the technology to customers.

Of course, even with these developments, we still have no rough timetable on public deployment. For now, testing will likely go on for quite a while. To get a sense for when we can expect 5G’s launch, be on the lookout for Verizon and maybe other companies to announce 5G-supported handsets. That could be a sign we are getting close, but I wouldn’t expect to see/hear anything until either much later this year or in 2017.

I hope that HTC rolls out the Thunderbolt 2 as the first 5G device.

The only purpose of 5G will be to serve up high-bandwidth advertising that will blow away your data cap

The real issue for me is whether I’ll ride out my current phone until a decent 5G phone is released, or I get another 4G phone interim.

I heard that 5G will have unlimited data again – at least as an option.

It makes sense. They can’t really have 1000x bandwidth and then somehow try to claim that the pipe is oversaturated without giving the customer 1000x the cap.

Comcast did for quite a while. What’s funny is at the same time as complaining about congestion, they offered to waive the limit for an extra monthly fee. So… you’re limiting heavy users to protect the network for everyone else but if they’re willing to pay you an extra $30 you’ll say ‘f#!& everyone else, use as much as you want’?

They will continue to give you full access to 4glte but for 5g will be extra. Red evil has to make more money off you.

Here’s to hoping they let us carry over our unlimited plans to 5G! I doubt it. Oh you want 5G, hand over that grandfathered UDP please…. Just kidding, Verizon would never say please.

Yup, they didn’t think about during the 3G to 4G transition, but I’m sure they’ve wised up now.

Verizon will play MC hammers “u can’t touch this” to UDP customer wanting 5g. No way the red devil wants unlimited touching their golden 5g network. Verizon execs rather sell their unneeded organs on the black market to make up for loss rather than offer unlimited data or low prices.

“Working with companies such as Samsung, Cisco, and Qualcomm, Verizon hopes that by working with as many partners as possible, they can more quickly deploy the technology to customers.”

    Should be read as:

Working with companies such as Samsung, Cisco, and Qualcomm, Verizon hopes that by working with as many partners as possible, they can make the gamble of selling almost all of their wire line services pay off sooner.

Seriously though, Verizon should be the most motivated company to get a 5G standard set. Their entire business model depends on it. If 5G deployment was delayed as little as 5 years Verizon would be in serious trouble.

I REALLY wish they have something in place for 5G once it becomes saturated. I loved the early days of 4G speeds but now it’s horrible.

I’d offer them my ‘soul’ in exchange for a 20 GB plan. I’d win like hell in that deal. They can have my ‘mystic aura’ as well for the next flagship phone.

They have been giving more data per dollar year after year, with 5G you could imagine adding a 0 to the end and having “Small” be 10GB, with “XL” being 200GB.

This is one of the many reasons I’ve clung to unlimited data. I mean, the main reason is that it’s still cheaper for me than buying the amount of data I use.
If I keep doing the same thing I’m doing now, I’ll use the same amount of data. But… what I’m doing will become more data intensive (ads, videos, higher resolutions). Obviously I’ll be ticked if Verizon couples 5G access with tiered data only.

Who cares about gigabytes per second when we’re still using old SMS protocols. I’m glad Verizon is leading this, but let’s see some major strides in RCS

    1. jak_341 Avatar
      jak_341

RCS will never catch on a wide scale. Apps are the standard now, such as WhatsApp or iMessage.

Now, if Apple changed to RCS as the fallback, carriers will scramble to implement it.

This is good news, but what worries me is that this will simply be a repeat of 3G and 4G. 3G was pretty fast until the network became saturated. 4G was the same story… I was actually one of the few people in my area that had a 4G-capable phone when Verizon first lit it up and it was BLAZING fast until everyone else got a 4G smartphone (I blame it on Apple), now the speeds are just meh.

Hope they are planning for that with 5G.

    1. Walter Partlo Avatar

I went from 40 down to 12 down when this happened. It was really cool when I never turned on WiFi because the phone was faster.

    2. Fritzo2162 Avatar
      Fritzo2162

I hear ya. I was getting 80-100Mbps when 4G first lit up. Now I get 2-20.

    3. Naibas Avatar
      Naibas

If verizon is going to force me to hand over my UDP in order to get 5g access, then I’ll probably just stay on 4G and hope enough people get on 5G to speed 4g up again.

1gbps+ speeds would be nice, but I’d live with 50 – 100mbps unlimited access over tiered 1gbps any day of the week.

The saddest part about the new ‘unlimited plans’ that throttle is they drop you down TWO generations to 2G! I’d be more inclined to drop verizon UDP and go elsewhere if it was at least 3G after your “high speed data” runs out. You can’t do jack on 128kbps.

Well me neither, but I’d be a lot more willing to go elsewhere to some of these cheaper carriers if they gave me 3G after the initial 4G allotment.

          1. icase Avatar
            icase

Or even just let you keep using LTE and throttle it to say, 2mbit or something. You can do a lot on your phone with 2Mbit.

          2. Geoff Johnson Avatar
            Geoff Johnson

Or just stick with your Verizon UDP that keeps giving you full LTE speeds.

Really though, over time if things load faster, you will end up looking at more things.

      4. Geoff Johnson Avatar
        Geoff Johnson

Actually if you are streaming video, faster speeds mean a higher resolution and higher bitrate can be sent to your phone. But the more common reason for more data is that you spend less time waiting for things to load, so you do more on your phone in the same amount of time.
