Google did not spend too much time detailing changes for the Android TV platform during its opening I/O keynote yesterday, but following the event, plenty of information was posted to the company’s official blog. Not only did Google explain where potential Android TV users could find the platform in new 2016 TV and set-top hardware from various companies, but also explained a few changes we will see once Android N hits the platform.
If buying a new TV with Android TV baked in sounds like the best way to get your fix, Google states that new sets from Sony (2016 BRAVIA line) and RCA will have Android TV built in. For set-top boxes, users can buy one from Sharp or Xiaomi. The Xiaomi Mi Box supports 4K at 60fps, complete with 802.11ac WiFi, Dolby Digital Plus + DTS surround sound, HDR10 and HDMI 2.0a support, and more. Additional details for the Xiaomi Mi Box can be found here.
As for the changes taking place once Android N hits the platform, Google talks about 3 main focuses. Picture-in-Picture, Recording APIs, and HDR (High Dynamic Range). Picture-in-Picture will allow users to continue watching video while browsing for new content to enjoy, Recording APIs allows the recording of live TV, and HDR enhances the 4K UHD viewing experience on many TV sets.
We won’t have Android N on Android TV until Google releases it, which will be sometime in Q3.

In my opinion the recording APIs are the biggest news. Media Center is sadly on the way out. I need a way to DVR my shows.
The Xiaomi Mi Box looks interesting if it can hit a decent price point.
I have the N preview for my Nexus Player, can I find any of these features inside there?
Meanwhile my 2015 Sony 4K TV is still on Lollipop. Dafuq?
This is why I don’t care what software comes with a TV. I can upgrade a box for a lot less than a TV.
Yea but software be damned, we still have gorgeous TVs!

Still waiting for Android M for my Sony 2015 AndroidTV as well, if this is how slow TV hardware gets update, then it isn’t really enticing to get a TV with AndroidTV built-in.
I’ve used AppleTV, Nexus Player, and Roku.
By far, the Roku is the best option for content, stability, and bang for your buck.
what about Amazon fire stick/fire tv?
Roku has Amazon and Google Play
Fire has Amazon but no Google Play
Android TV has Kodi without having to “jailbreak” it and is simple as downloading it from the Google Play store
My Nexus Player was so unstable I could not handle having to refresh the internet connection or restarting the system or uninstalling and reinstalling apps on a regular basis.
Nexus Player isn’t nearly as good as it’s younger brother the Shield TV. Shield TV is far more supported than the Nexus Player and that says a lot.
Ya i love my Nvidia shield TV, bu wish it had a PS Vue app.
may end up getting an old refurbished iphone so i can chromecast the iOS PS Vue app onto the Shield TV.
Otherwise im stuck waiting until the new PS4K gets released.
Amazon has a sorted past, both hardware and media-wise, with stuff purchased from them. If you don’t walk under their command in their single file line, they pull back ownership and brick your stuff. I rather own my purchases.

i don’t know. android tv has built in cast, and installed kodi with no problem which allows for even more functionality
Disagree completely, firestick/TV have Playstation Vue, awesome cable replacement service!!!
I prefer SlingTV, but the lack of Google Play to use my Google Rewards on is a deal breaker. I haven’t had to pay to rent a movie in a long time.
why do you prefer sling TV? the only benefit is its slightly cheaper, vue has more channels, DVR capabilities, can be used on more devices, has on demand content, and can watch the past 3 days of content on any channel.
It’s only native on firestick and PS (i’m not chromecasting my tv watching). I haven’t considered it because I heard stability issues early on. Not sure how it is now though. Maybe I’ll do the free trial on my PS4 this weekend and see how it works. I would still need a second device that has the Google Play store for the bedroom TV. Does it have a remote app for Android on PS?
Yes and no. Basically not yet. IOS got their app and it’s awesome but unfortunately we have not. I don’t really understand the trend of android OEMs and primarily android devs releasing content on IOS first but that’s another battle. You can always just use the playstation app and just remote control you ps, therefore PS vue, but nothing dedicated to PS vue (yet). I have read about people getting frame rate drops and freezing but I have not had any such issues. currently 110down 10up. so I have pretty decent internet but nothing too crazy. I was using it on 30 down 3 up for about 3 weeks before I upgraded and the worst I can say is it takes a while (1-2 min) for the auto signal system to stabilize and get 1080. still had no issues with frame rate or freezing. but I agree the lineup of supporting products sucks a little, and chromecast support is insane.
I’m doing ~350down and ~250up (U-Verse Gigabit (performance varies). I’ll check it out this weekend and see how it is. I have a PS3 that I could put upstairs, but it’s a bit clunky for a bedroom. I really do enjoy the convenience of controlling my TV, receiver, and roku from my phone. But I haven’t tried PS Vue yet, so I should give it a shot before I can really say definitively one way or another. Good looking out, I appreciate it.
Just a heads up PS vue on the PS3 is quite a bit of a downgrade compared to the PS4. Currently have my PS3 and it chugs through the menu system. The streaming itself is fine but the menus almost made me lose my mind till I just accepted it haha. Cant wait till I get to move my PS4 upstairs after the PS4.5 (NEO) comes out in september-october. cheers!
For me, Sling has international channels as an add-on. That was the major deciding factor. VUE doesn’t have that last I checked. Plus it seems to be available on more platforms, despite still being pretty limited in app distribution.
It just had a bunch of content added when they went from beta to national roll out but I don’t think it had too much international content added. They have an awesome readout of what all their packaged include, also they do have some addons but their core package had everything I want. I know sling only has something like 20-30 channels but again it’s cheaper, Core on PS vue has 70+ (depending on where you live exact number changes with local stations). Don’t watch any foreign TV so I really can’t tell you from experience.
That pic up there looks like the 900c. Light bleed King.
I thought more OEMS did Android TV Tvs
