  • When all of this went down, I switched to xposed framework on my Galaxy S3. No problems since and it uses the native tethering now. Not an option for everyone, but worth looking into if your phone is supported.

  • Does Foxfi only work for verzion phones …? Because I’m about to turn my phone back on and i use sprint main reason i’m asking because i just move and we can’t get no cable internet here. I’m talking about wifi mode so i can use my sprint unlimited data for my xbox one.

  • Just tried and it’s now working on my Samsung GS5 w/ Verizon unlimited data plan. Yeah!!! By the way, I filed a complaint w/ FCC about it on Nov 23. On Nov 25, Verizon called me to let me know they had received the complaint from the FCC and per the process, they would investigate and would copy me on their reply to the FCC. Not sure if this helped in resolving the issue, but would certainly encourage all of us to report issue to FCC if it happens again.

  • 11/26 FoxFi allows hotspot, but no internet access.

Anyone else seeing this? FoxFi started allowing the hotspot to work again, but when I connect to the hotspot from another device, that device has no internet access.

    Verizon UDP on a Galaxy S6 Edge+

  • Wohoo! FoxFi works again! Time to tether that unlimited data again. Don’t know what you’ve got till its gone.

  • I knew the great folks at FoxFi would get it back up and running. This wasn’t the first time FoxFi has been down and it probably won’t be the last, people were too quick to jump to conclusions, some even signed up for Verizon Mobile hot spot service. FoxFi>Verizon, Happy Thanksgiving.

  • Glad to have it working again! Quick little tip I discovered accidentally awhile back: after running FoxFi and getting the hotspot going, toggle Airplane-mode on/off and it won’t do the annoying audible or silent buzz notification every time a client connects/disconnects. Works on my S3 and S5. =)

  • My FoxFi went tits up from my S3 last Friday. Grandfathered UDP. Don’t anyone jump the gun and start paying Verizon more money or fuking up UDPs. I fixed mine (I think). Yay for me!!!!!

I’m computer stupid and trepidatious about altering anything on my phone or computer (history eraser buttons and all). Spent last 4 days searching for answers here and on similar threads. Tried USB tethering but neither phone nor laptop even recognized connection. (Have OEM charger cable but shot over to BestBuy and confirmed through use that it is also data cable.) Don’t know if that would have been the case prior to recent shutdown. Mobile hotspot had always been enough. Got up this morning and went back at it. Started by trying Activate Hotspot again, same crap.

Finally started with basic troubleshooting from PdaNet. http://pdanet.co/help/wifi.php. Suggestion 1: “If FoxFi ever works for you before and now giving you problem, the first thing you should try is to reboot your phone and rename the hotspot before activating FoxFi.” Didn’t try earlier because I kept approaching FoxFi from the wrong direction and getting “FoxFi16” under SSID. Didn’t know “SSID” was equal to “Name”. Remember, computer stupid. Also, didn’t reboot phone (Does that mean simply shutting it off?). So, went at it like this:

Didn’t restart or turn phone off/on. Tapped FoxFi Key icon on home screen. Tapped “Network Name”. Changed FoxFi16 to fOXfI16 (in case I needed to change it back). Left Password unchanged. Tapped “Activate WiFi Hotspot”. (In this instance, didn’t require going through “Almost there… Go To Settings”) Laptop picked up fOXfI in “Open Network and Support Center” as an available connection. Disconnected from home connection (my roomie’s) and connected fOXfI. Tar dar! Back in fukin’ business.

Turned off Hotspot. Turned off phone and computer. Restarted both. Everything back to working like always: Asks if I trust this application. Sends me through all the usual steps. “Checking Subscription Status” swirls for a few seconds, as was usual (instead of the 45 or so after recent problems), disappears and “Hotspot On”. I’m so fukin’ happy I could beat off. Think I will. A little XHamster, if you please

  • But, if i have a non rooted moto device (turbo 2) and unlimited data…fox fi wont let me tether wirelessly correct? Only usb tethering works? I want to tether my n7 but no option too without giving verizon my kidney

  • DL pisses and moans when we mention ad-blocking the crap-ton of ads they allegedly shove down out throats (I never see them) but happily reports that an app allowing you to tether your Verizon UDP is once again working. ;P

  • FoxFi was not working on my LG G2 for at least a week, but I just tried PDAnet and wifi tethering with that works (had to uninstall FoxFi though)

  • Mine jsut started working! Not sure how, but I am NOT restarting my phone! lol
    Samsung Galaxy Note III
    Android 5.0
    N900VVRUE0F1
    Kernel 3.4.0
    Build Number: LRX21V.N900VVRUE0F1

  • It works on my Galaxy S5 with an unlimited data plan on Verizon!!! Thank you FoxFi!!!!!!!! 🙂

  • It just started working on my phone again. Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 with grandfathered unlimited data plan

  • FixFi had some issues earlier today on VZW but it seems to be resolved now. It looks like the issue was with FoxFi’s VPN service, which fools Verizon phones to thinking you have a tethering plan. That service seems to be fixed/restored now. I am currently able to use FoxFi with my Galaxy S5 (unrooted) and VZW UDP to turn on WiFi tethering.

    • how does the foxfi vpn work anyway? is it routing all data through a vpn server hosted by foxfi’s dev?

      • It creates a VPN tunnel for about 30 seconds while the hotspot-check occurs; other than that, it’s not active.

      • It starts a temporary VPN to fool VZW modified tethering program into thinking you have a subscription. Once done, the VPN is no longer used.

  • pdanet has a wifi-share.Install Pdanet on your laptop>>Open Foxfi from your phone>> Check “Activiate USB Mode” to activate USB debugging. If prompt to activate USB goto “settings”>>”about phone” tap on “Build number” as many times(typically 3times to active USB debugging) to activate “Developer Options”>> go back and tap on “Developer Options>> check”USB debugging”>> got to yoour laptop lunch Pdanet>> right mouse click on pdanet icon>> connect>> after connected, right click pdanet and select “Wifi-share” That’s it! 20 bucks saved per month! you can also Activate Foxfi via bluetooth from your phone by checking ” Activate bluetooth Mode” works great for me. I’m able to connect my printer, TV, my gf’s phone, laptop etc through the wifishare. God Bless America!

  • I have a Samsung s4, with a grandfathered unlimited data plan, PDAnet had been working perfectly UNTIL a couple of days ago, and a price increase. I did file an FCC complaint again Verizon. Here is my question: should I root the phone in order to have PDAnet work again? Thanks in advance!

    • I have UDP (unlimited data plan Verizon) and currently using PdaNet+ (purchased) USB tether on my rooted S4 (5.0.1) using (kernel OF1) for now until I find a wireless solution.

  • fuking verizon is really pissen me off…but i will stay fking with them as i got a new turbo 2 i love and unlimited data which i refuse to let go of….i would love to tether my tablet through it though man i wish someone makes a work around or we get root or foxfi updates…something somehow…how can vzw even have the power to mess with them only google who runs the playstore should fuk vzw

  • Not sure this is new? FoxFi stopped working when I got a Moto E on Android 5.1 in August. I haven’t tried it in the last week, but it DID work on my GNex running 4.2.2

    • FoxFi’s wifi mode is only advertised to work on Verizon Motorola phones on Android 4.3 or below. The new development is FoxFi stopped working on pretty much all Verizon phones for people on unlimited data plans (unless the phone is rooted).

  • Here’s my solution (for now): Instead of buying an expensive MiFi device, I bought a Galaxy S3 Mini for about $35 to use as a wifi hotspot (after installing CM on it). It’s a drag to swap out the SIM from my regular phone, but I’ve got my fingers crossed this will be fixed eventually.

If I could root my phone to install XPosed/XTether or install a custom ROM on it, I would. But I have a Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge+, which has no root method available. I like the phone too much to swap it for a Nexus 6/6P.

    • Wait, did you just say you used another mobile phone with your current SIM to HotSpot it? Did FoxFi work with the S3 Mini? I have an older phone, but what’s the Android Version? Does FoxFi work with earlier Android Versions?

      • That’s the plan. I haven’t done it yet, just bought the mini phone. My understanding is that hotspot is only a problem for VZW phones using non-rooted, stock ROMs.

If your phone is rooted, you can install XPosed framework, then the XPosed extension called XTether to enable hotspot without Verizon’s subscription check. Or of course you can go the harder route and install a custom ROM that doesn’t have any of Verizon’s claws in it.

So I looked for the cheapest VZW phone I could find that can be rooted and has the hardware to support LTE and wifi hotspotting, so I can root it to enable hotspot (whether through XTether or with a custom ROM).

        • Hmm… thank you for the info. Looks like I will be doing some more research on ROMs. I can’t find anything for the Samsung SIII running version 4.4.2

          • I hope you find a good solution. You might find it less of a hassle to root your phone and put XPosed on there, if you don’t mind being rooted all the time.

        • this isnt a bad idea, surprised i havent thought of it…it is a hassle though to be switching the sim card just to tether…and to be honest you would have to find a device with a brolic battery so at least you can tether for a long time…hmm tempted i wonder what was the last maxx like device that was able to get root/be unlocked that you can get for cheap af

          • That’s a good point. I was tempted by the MiFi 6620L, since it has a 4000 mah battery (and advertises 20 hour battery life for hotspotting), but I didn’t like the price tag. I’ll be interested to hear what you decide on.

One thing I’m interested in looking into is tethering my phone to my android tablet via USB (with an OTG cable that’s split to allow the phone to charge while tethering), then using the tablet as a wifi hotspot. Someone on stackoverflow claimed it was possible to USB tether internet from phone-to-laptop using some funky commandline stuff. At least that would avoid SIM swapping.

        • I’ve seen reports that it still works on the GNex without root and some guy on eBay has a bunch of brand-new ones. =P

  • Well, looks like only non-carrier phones for me for the future. If FoxFi cannot fix this (more than likely not), can a UDP user still on contract get a non-carrier phone (6P, MxP) and just switch sims? Got an S5 that is not rooted and it looks like I’d have to downrev it back to somewhere in the 4’s and start there (root, scared to do it).

    • I tried my UDP VZW SIM with a Nexus 6P for about a week. Everything worked fine (calling, tethering, even Good For Enterprise was not blocked). Basic visual voice mail was the only app that did not work. I returned the 6P because it was too large, slippery, had no wireless charging or waterproof features (needless to say, sealed battery and non-expandable storage, as always). I wish Samsung makes a Galaxy S5 like phone (waterproof, just the right size, wireless charging, replaceable battery, expandable memory, fingerprint reader, amoled high-res screen, great camera, etc) that works on VZW, without any VZW bloatware/software restrictions.

  • I left Verizon unlimited for Project Fi and my next bill is set to be $40 thanks to Google finding and auto connecting to Wi-Fi hot-spots when I’m out and about. Sitting at a restaurant right now and am on their Wi-Fi and VPN is working great. Screw Verizon.

    • Dude, you’re paying $10 per every Gig of data, according to their plan. 1 Gig of data nowadays doesn’t go too far lol. Unless you buy more data. I’m assuming you’re paying $40 for 4 gigs? Before access fees and all?

      • Nope I’ve got 11 days left in my billing cycle and have only used 1.36 gigs thanks to Google connecting to Wi-Fi hot-spot automatically when I’m not at home. It’s kinda remarkable. That $40 includes my access fee. Let me preface by noting that I don’t consume much data during working hours since I’m at work and if I need a hot-spot for my computer I use my work cell if it’s work related.

        • Naturally, but this definitely would not work for folks that live online after work hours. It would be pretty expensive, especially if high speed internet is not available at home.

          • Well of course this isn’t a good plan if you don’t have high speed Internet at home but 88% of the US population is on a broadband Internet connection. For most of us this is not an issue and is why Project Fi is working so well for me.

          • I agree with it being a suitable plan for that portion of users. It’s really difficult finding a reliable connection that on average runs at speeds of at least 17-20 Mb/s, with no boundaries. Now that is freedom!

          • Do you live in a rural area? I get 50 mbps from Comcast without a hiccup on most days. Super excited though because Google Fiber will be installing in my area soon!! 1 gbps here I come! Can’t wait to dump Comcast.

  • Good news, I can also confirm that PDANet works with the Macbook Pro with El Capitan, on my Galaxy Note 4 with unlimited data! But for some reason its quite slow I get only about 1Mbps for download, but only 90kbps for upload. Any help will be much appreciated! Now i need to figure out a day to get my Ipad online.

  • I can confirm its not working for me either! Galaxy Note 4 with Grandfathered Unlimied Data. Stopped working about 2 days ago! Has anyone had any luck with fox fi and the USB/Bluetooth Mode? I prefer the bluetooth mode as its wireless 🙂

  • Pda net to the laptop has a option. To wifi tether. So I can continue to stream movies an play xbox wireless on my unlimited data plan. All.my devicea still work just need to have a laptop now

  • B.S. like this is why I finally left Verizon last month after being with them for many, many years (with five lines). They are the undisputed champions of extorting money from their customers. ANY time they make a change to their plans/policies, you can bet it will cost you more money. Charging extra for a hotspot – which is BUILT INTO the operating system of the phone – is utterly ridiculous. You’re already paying for the data… what difference does it make to them if you consume it on your phone or on another device that is tethered to your phone??? Answer: NONE. To them, it’s simply data going to your phone (again, that you’re ALREADY paying for). They couldn’t care less if it’s “right” to charge extra for that hotspot or not… they simply see it as yet another potential revenue stream that they can exploit. Until more people start pushing back (by leaving and telling them WHY) they will continue doing this sort of thing. I’m done with them… they’ll never see another dime from me.

  • Just thought I’d add. On my grandfathered unlimited plan, my G3 stopped working for me sometime between 5pm and 8:30pm Sunday (11/22). Turned it on at the gym and it worked, tried turning it on again at home at 8:30, no dice. USB tethering worked fine and at a decent 10-12Mbps, however, when I tried to share the connection using ICS to my router the router speeds were extremely slow. < 1Mbps. I temporarily caved and bought the hotspot add-on from for $30/ month.

Hopefully, foxfi can this. If not, does anyone know if a 5.1.1 G3 can be rooted?

  • I have a galaxy s4 and the foxfi won’t work… it just say try again later….is there any other app that might work?

  • Or you can use USB tethering with pdanet from your laptop than download virtual router on your laptop, Thank me later

    • Exactly what I started doing as soon as it went down. Noting that download speed is nearly the same (15-25Mbps) but upload speeds have dropped significantly from 12-15 down to 2-5. Also getting a bit of packet-loss and video buffering, but overall still very usable and serving up all the devices connected before, including the Xbox One. I did manually configure IP addresses using the Virtual Router adapter IP as the Gateway (192.168.137.1) and Google DNS (both IPv4 and IPv6 on configurable devices).

      • 15-25Mbps is awesome! I’m on 4G in the Denver area and the best I’ve ever seen is 14Mbps. I usually end up around 10 or 12. Good enough to stream what I need, though.

        • Now that it’s back up, and I’ve got the network all dialed in, I’m seeing up to 69Mbps down on the handset and 50+ on the laptop. Use 5Ghz option if it’s available – have to manually set it, and hidden SSID if you want under hotspot-options each time it’s launched. Makes a HUGE difference! =)

          • Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve never tried changing that setting, but I’ll give it a shot next time and run a speed test on my PS4. If it can run Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Sling, and Funimation – I’m golden!

  • So, they jack up the price nearly double, then lock down the ability to use it. The VERY LEAST they could do is slip it ALL of the way in and go ahead and offer a $9.95/month tethering bolt-on option. Bastards. Potential customers beware!

    • Can you use the native hotspot app on your Nexus 5x? Was considering purchasing a nexus since others have said they can use the hotspot.

      • The built in function does a carrier check with Verizon however there is a workaround that is OK if you only use tethering occasionally. If you pop the sim card tray out a bit until it doesn’t read the card, then activate tethering, then push the sim card back in, it will work. Once you turn tethering off you have to do the sim trick every time you want to tether. Not a big deal once in a while but for a regular tetherer it could be annoying.

      • I hope not as well, but I’m being optimistic because the update will not be a “Verizon” or “Carrier Specific” update.

        • I can confirm that, as of 5 days ago, native tethering worked fine on a Marshmallow Nexus 6P with VZW UDP

    • “Can’t take screenshot due to limited storage space”
That’s a lot of files you have in that phone, lol

      • Yeah that was weird, I got the 64gb internal and a 128gb sd card. Neither of them are even close to being full. Some strange bug I guess

  • “when you try and tether without having signed up for a tethering plan from Verizon” What disgusting thing is that? That’s like asking for monthly data payment in order to use Wifi connectivity. Are all carriers in USA that dissgusting?

  • What are some other options for a GS4 user? I don’t need unlimited data if I can’t wifi teather, so I’m just going to switch to google fi if there isn’t any other options.

  • I have s4 vnw and unlimited data since they bought out alltel anyone able to help me get this to work again

  • I spent all day Saturday the 14th (day before the upgrade) talking with Verizon on the phone about avoiding the $20/month per unlimited line (I have 3 so that totals out to $60 more/month), the rep assured me I wouldn’t get hit with the increase, and was going to call me back on Monday to confirm.

Sure enough, Monday rolls around and he gives me a song and dance about how he was wrong, and he is “sorry for the inconvenience”, I told him sorry isn’t going to pay the extra $1,440 over two years!! He then assures me AGAIN that he will take the fees off. When I call back again a few days later, a supervisor informs me that I will still have to pay the fees.

I have the ENTIRE series of conversations with each rep recorded. I don’t know what to do at this point.

    • There’s nothing you can do. For every rep that tells you what you want, there is someone higher that will recant and say how that person wasn’t authorized to make those promises.

    • You realize that you’re not under a contract – and because of that they can arbitrarily decide to raise your rates to whatever they want.

You have a choice now. You can either decide to take their offer and keep the service you have – or you can decide you no longer find value in their offer.

FYI, I’m pretty sure Verizon will keep raising rates like this to see where the point of elasticity is for their unlimited hold outs.

I’m thinking probably another $20 raise next year and they’ll get all but the biggest data hogging a-holes off of the unlimited plan.

      • I’m going to make sure I use a few extra of my UNLIMITED gigs this month, just to be a big fat data hogging a-hole. just for you. suck it

  • I have Verizon unlimited data still along with the $20 discount on every unlimited line. I guess the new $20 increase will put me to the old regular price.

I guess I am also still an oldtimer that requires my phone to be able to be rooted, bootloader unlocked and able to be rommed. My Nexus 6 ROM has tethering fully enabled as it should be for everyone. How we use our data should be up to us.

I own a business and tether my phone to my wireless credit card machine to process card payments which is very handy.

Nexus phones with a stock ROM with all the extra features included and no ads are still the best. Didn’t know foxfi was even still used. But its our data and we should be able to use it.

    • Its Verizon’s service and they can charge what they want for it and determine how you use it.

      • Big Red think they can, but they aren’t that big. Verizon has been fined millions in the last year for “charging what they want.”

  • well, it seems to be working for users here. probably a glitch in either foxfi or something verizon tweaked that foxfi will fix later.

  • Foxfi just died on my Note2 but still working on my Galaxy Nexus. I hope the internet gods stay on my side, I just can’t go back to dialup.

    • Call an actual broadband provider to get your primary internet connection. Don’t be a data hog and screw it up for everyone else on the wireless network.

(yeah yeah yeah I’ve heard the data hogs tell me that them running an anime server on tethered server doesn’t affect MY connection performance whatsoever – and as a retired network engineer, I find that explanation dubious at best)

      • Your suggestion works for those who can get broadband as primary internet. There are still some places where the only availability is a capped (5gb $80/mo) satellite plan.

        • You can’t tell mr. knowitall anything. If I could get broadband, I’d be on it in a heartbeat. All thats in my area is dialup or satellite. :/

          • Yep, same.
Like I’d really choose Foxfi for Internet if there were a better/faster/more reliable service?

      • And as a mathematics major I know how easy it could be to offer Internet to everyone. We just put a price on it. Don’t try and troll struggling people trying to figure things out kid

      • if the only other option is dialup they are probably in a rural area where wireless won’t be congested anyway

  • I know I’ll get thrown under the bus for this but I left VZ because it’s expensive… I can’t help but think all the abusers of unlimited are the reason it is both went up in price and cutting out the people using tethering. You can’t say verizon is really at fault for cutting tethering when you won’t pay for it yourself, or want to add tethering to a no longer existing plan. People that used unlimited to have Internet at home and brag about are the people who cause this stuff to happen. Over 100 gigs in a month? We had to pay for them.

OK burn me at the stake I said my piece go back to blaming verizon for charging for what others are using.

    • Less than 1% of users are unlimited, and a fraction of that group is using “over 100 gigs in a month”. Do not be jealous, ok?

    • as stated below your talking a small portion, but i cant argue i have unlimited barley tether but do use over 20 gigs a month just on phone, watching football and netflix.
      But
look at all the plans tmobile now being the biggest welfare system of phones now.
      1 unlimited 95 bucks
      4 unlimited 180
whos paying for those other 2 on unlimited with 4 users the single guy just like in the country as a whole the single person/line pays the far more taxes, phone charges etc. to pay for others.
Verizon upped the price for 1 reason alone that is because they can,
they dont want unlimited users to leave over the increase they just want more money.
they still dont limit you to 23 gigs before some worded version of throttling as tmobile/sprint do.
and throttling stops unlimited ! 2g is worthless for anything but maybe checking email. been there on tmobile -2g is useless fro net use.

  • Hmmm… FoxFi stopped working for me (Verizon, unlimited) when my OG Moto X updated to Kit Kat. After a few months of no-go, I deleted the app.

  • LG V10. Verizon unlimited data.
I’ve been using Foxfi for years.
I’ve also been using it all weekend, no issue.

  • Stopped working on my Maxx HD over a year ago when it updated the phone to 4.4.2. Figured it was dead in the water back then

  • Heh… Well VZW users you already have unlimited data. What more do you want? *sips hot chocolate*

  • i’ve been unable to use the “Wifi hotspot” feature ever since i got the Droid Turbo (with unlimited)…. but with that being said, i’ve been using the “bluetooth mode”since day one without any issues. In fact i am using it right now on my Surface Pro 4… So i can say that this feature still works without any issues for those of you who need a backup plan for your computer or tablet until foxfi can circumvent Verizons new blockage…

    • Are you using a custom rom? My 2nd hand S3 has the newest factory firmware, making customization is damn near impossible. I am experiancing this problem. I can still use PDANet+ for usb tethering, but this problem started last night (11/20) for me.

Foxfi is no longer working as of last night after working for almost two weeks.

  • could 4.4 kit kat still works s5 running on vzw i know my pda net still works i dont update or push for update cause i know what follows in a update

  • FoxFi on my Verizon LG G4 with unlimited data plan still working here.

    Edit: without root access

  • It won’t stop with FoxFi, Verizon and other carriers will continue to block all the most popular tethering apps. There are work arounds, and hopefully always will be or FCC puts a stop to it. It is your data, the carrier authorized your plan, they shouldn’t dictate how you use it (especially if you are on e tiered plan).

    • Actually, I think blocking apps is just a first step, their next move is to start tracking “unauthorized” tethering use, and start issuing notices and forced hot spot subscriptions.

    • The carrier authorized your plan, which you agreed to not tether unless you payed for it. Verizon is in the clear doing this. I feel for those who just use a little here and there, but it’s the ones who use 100’s of gb tethering that are hurting all of us with unlimited data.

      • False on every account.

First, tethering was not even possible when I signed up for my unlimited data and web plan since it wasn’t even a smartphone, so no I didn’t “agree to not tether unless you payed for it”. They offered a plan based at a time when phones had limited capability to utilize the data in order to attract customer. When that changed, they stopped offering that plan because there was profit to sell data packages for more. However, it was the carriers decision to grandfather the unlimited plans, and no where where did it say “as long as you promise not to tether…scout’s honor”.

Second, “ones who use 100’s of gb tethering that are hurting all of us with unlimited data”…I don’t use 100’s but I’ve seen screen grabs of those that have, but I have never been affected by it, and I guarantee you have not either. The only ones that care are the carriers because they know they can sell data plans a premium ($5 – $10/GB) and want to everyone into a tiered data plan for 2 reasons.

        1) Most people use less data than they subscribe to so that is bonus profit to the carrier. It’s like paying for 50 gallons of gas for your car per month, but you only use 40, and you’re not likely to drive around a lot more the days of month just to use it up.
        2) If you happen to exceed your allotted data, they get to sell you more in increments, not a per use, and since most people run out towards the end of the month, you’ll likely pay for unused data. Back to the car example, it’s like using 51 gallons on the second to last day of the month, being charged for 10 more gallons, but your final usage is only 52 gallons.

Carriers have done this since the beginning of cell phones, first they sold minutes, then features (like call-waiting, call-forwarding, and voicemail), then text messages, then data…If a carrier didn’t offer features or texting unless ‘I paid for it’, do you really think they would block apps that allowed me to do the same? No, because there is no money in selling those features anymore. Eventually carriers will get back into a price war over data and it will stop with offering unlimited data when there is something new the can price gouge over.

        • agree 100% except you left out 1 important part. if you pay for 6 gigs and use 2 they steal the other 4. so if you go over they charge you if you go under they steal that.

        • The only thing worse than the way VZW treats their customers is the way some of their customers think they’re entitled to something they didn’t sign up for, and refuse to pay for.

          • I pay for everything I signed up, and I am entitled to that service. We’re trying to make valid point, or just trying to troll?

          • Show me in your contract where it says tethering comes with your Unlimited Data plan on VZW. Please, because then the lot of you could STFU and sue already. It would save me a lot of typing.

          • Show me where in your data plan contract it says you must subscribe to a tethering plan in order to tether your device.

That language certainly doesn’t/didn’t exist in my contract, because as stated above, tethering wasn’t possible with the flip-phone in which I signed my original unlimited data contract on, and certainly tethering subscriptions didn’t exist. It was “INVENTED” in order to make more money off something user already had available as function of their device.

By your “logic” if your carrier wanted to start charge an extra $20 – $30/mo in order for you to turn on your WiFi or Bluetooth, you are more than happy to hand that over. Or, with all the NFC payments available, you can’t wait until you get charged a service fee to use your phone to pay and I bet you’ll be back here arguing “Where does it say in your phone contract that NFC payments comes with your data plan on VZW”.

          • You mistake me. I am not stupid enough to do business with a carrier that thinks it’s ok to charge me extra for something I should have access to. You seem to be. And your analogies absolutely suck because none of them require my provider to build and maintain any infrastructure for them to work, they are options added by the phone manufacturer and supported by a 3rd party. When you tether, something other than your approved, contracted device is using data that your provider has built the infrastructure to support, and has offered you for use on a specific device.

So to simplify: Mobile Data requires a carrier (in this case, VZW) to support it for it to work. Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth do not require VZW to support them at all, not even a teeny tiny little bit. They exist outside VZW’s sphere of influence. However, you bring up a good point; If there’s a carrier that would charge for the use of any of those, it would be VZW.

          • This is a ridiculous argument. My phone has a limit on the bandwidth it can take from the network (I like to think that I am limited by my device’s capability and not an action of Verizon, so call me a dreamer). Generally, with a 4G connection, my phone can get between 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps (4 to 6 Mbps on 3G). If I use hotspot to share that connection to a device, the device is still limited by my phone’s capacity. If I use the phone’s hotspot to share the connection with 5 devices, that 10 Mbps is now spit between them all and none of them function properly. Sharing my data with other devices in no way causes extra strain on the network because I have no ability to pull any more data than I can get through my phone at any given time.

          • I’m not arguing that Verizon has a legitimate reason for the way they do business, I am arguing that by you choosing to do business with them you are bound by their rules and must pay them what they charge for the services that they offer. Otherwise you are stealing from them.

As I’ve said multiple times, I don’t like Verizon’s policies or prices, so I choose not to do business with them.

          • That’s a discussion for a different forum, I would think. When it comes to monthly charges, I am not in a contract and they can charge whatever they want (within reason as determined by the FCC). It’s no different than a landlord raising rent when you’re monthly. That has to be an accepted fact and shouldn’t need to be argued.

For this forum, the issue is Verizon blocking a native function of a device in order to charge you more for it. Tethering still works. Bluetooth still works. They are blocking the Hotspot function because people want that.

This is a last ditch effort to milk more money out of people. They tried to limit data speeds and the FCC shut them down on that because of double charging. Essentially, they can either charge for by amount or by speed (per GB or Mbps), but they can’t double dip. Right now, they make more money limiting amount than they would limiting speed… but that day may be on the horizon.

  • I spent about 12 hours in debugging my Note 3. Even backed up my data and did factory reset. I thought i was just my phone but.. . NOOOOO its verizon. So sad. I hope FoxFi finds a fix soon. QUESTION: Is there any way to get a notification if they do? Can we sign up on some email list or tweet or something. I need my FoxFi. I was told by a verizon rep that the only way we can loose our data plan is to call an cancel it now. Of course yes it’s 20 extra a month. Still worth unlimited data.

      • Thanks, I tried this on the Note 3 and WiFi hotspot won’t work. I am able to get USB to work, thankfully, bit I can’t watch movies on my TV anymore via chromecsst. I am hoperil foxfi will come thru.

          • The full paid version of Connectify cost me $18. This let’s me have all Connectify features and use it on three computers. The range is a little bit less, but the quality seems smoother and more consistent. You can even share the internet using the computer’s Ethernet port. This means you can port the internet to a stronger router (if you have one).

          • I tried the PDA beta and it wouldn’t work for me.

Sony Vaio with Windows 7 wouldn’t work.
Toshiba ThinkPad with Windows 8 wouldn’t work.
HP Pavillion with Windows 10 wouldn’t work.

The Pdanet+ hot spot would not work, but Connectify works on all three.

  • Just another reason to switch to an iPhone, a jailbroken iphone can use tetherme on an unlimited plan with no issues.

  • Unlimited data users for Verizon can’t even pay for mobile hot spot without changing their plan. Guess everyone will have to root.

    • Under the bridge is correct… just add it using my verizon on your phone. It’s $30 a month but it allows you to tether your unlimited. I was actually paying for it until this new $20 hike… now i unsubscribed and back to using foxfi bluetooth mode

      • Same, except I got a Moto X Pure Edition and don’t need an app or root to tether with the built in tether feature. I had no issue paying $30/month for hotspot, but with the $20 data hike, I figured I’m already paying for the hotspot feature now.

        • I couldn’t get the built in tether to work on mXPE, tried FoxFi next and was blocked, so I installed another app which has been working well so far. Maybe I’ll remove the app and try the native feature again.

          • Glad you got it working. It was pretty big news for some people but I didn’t really care when I bought mine because I was paying for the hotspot. Now that I’m not, it’s awesome to have it now.

      • Ha! Exact same thing as me. I was tethering via my HTC One M8 for Windows.. but decided to drop the tethering because of the $20 price hike and tether on an old Galaxy S3. I guess I’ll have to get a bluetooth dongle for my PC soon so I won’t need this 10 foot of USB cable attached to my PC.

  • I installed PdaNet by June Fabrics on my PC running Windows 7. It’s got some bugs. It causes windows to crash and I have to restart “normally”. Even when I open the “About PdaNet” window, it locks up.

  • I believe it is a foxfi issue its not an unlimited issue. I have tried on a Verizon note 3 with limited data and it doesn’t work but if I go in and try to tether direct from the native setting GS it still works.

  • I used an ‘app’ called Wifi Hotspot. It is actually a widget not an app, so it doesn’t show up in your app drawer, but it works great! (no root required).

          • Well, I mentioned elsewhere in the comments that I think carriers will continue to block popular tethering apps, but they don’t have time to check them all or check even the popular ones again after updates.

Keep searching for no-root work arounds, or new unchecked apps, and if you find one that works for you, please share so others can benefit.

          • Well I realized the reason it was probably working so well for me is bc the mXPE has a native hotspot function, and this just added a nice on/off switch to my home screen.

I’d encourage you to search through and find an alternative to FoxFi that does require root, if you don’t want to root or wait for a FoxFi fix. There aren’t many for WiFi tethering w/o root, there are a few USB, like pdanet which are working as far as I know. I’m sorry man, I don’t agree with this powerplay from vzw but this is why we use android, for the developer community–shame on Verizon for trying to stifle that.

  • I heard some people say LG phones still work with FoxFi, so it might be device based. For sure all Samsung phone can not.

Hopefully FoxFi will fix it soon. Until then, if you don’t want to use PDAnet and install drivers on your PC. You can use the free “Bluetooth Tethering On Off” app for bluetooth based tethering. It uses the device’s built in bluetooth tethering which is locked out from the settings screen. Downside is it is limited to 1.5mbps but a good temporary alternative.

  • This isn’t really news to me. I haven’t been able to use FoxFi since upgrading beyond JB. From my research, Google was forced to bake in sql code that authenticates whether or not your data plan allows for tethering. The code can be edited to bypass this, but I haven’t felt the need to since getting my N6.

  • So happy I went with the Moto X Pure Edition now. I was happy paying $30 for hotspot until they increased unlimited data by $20. Moto X can do it without hotspot plan and with the built in hotspot feature.

  • I called Verizon and they said that they have made no updates at all. I called Samsung and they outed Verizon right away. It’s the stealth nerf and the lying that are unacceptable. If you’re making a change, be upfront about it – don’t sneak it in without permission and lie about it!

      • Samsung said tons of people have been calling them because of changes made to their devices. Every single person calling was from Verizon. Samsung guaranteed that any and all changes coming from them come with a permission screen. They do not make any changes to anyone’s devices without expressed consent. Verizon, on the other hand, is well known for stealth updates and changes without informing the customer.

  • Galaxy s4, grandfathered in with unlimited data on verizon. They block mobile hotspot without subscription, in fact they don’t offer it for unlimited data. They want you off if it. The only way is to sign a new contract-hell no. We live in rural area and really are stuck with Verizon for best signal, but not service. All our phones are month to month and only one we were smart enough to switch before they started charging extra. We had a mi-fi, way expensive on overages. Verizon are ust plain greedy bastards, and now, they have added 20.00 more to our bill and stopped the ability to use mobile hot spot.

      • I used to have the hotspot plan until the $20 price hike, then I dropped it. You can had it using the My Verizon app, or carefully navigating your “My Verizon” website to add it as a feature for $30 a month on top of your Unlimited Data.

    • That’s really a ridiculous comment. What does Samsung users have to do with a nexus device that isn’t in Verizon’s imei data base? You think that there aren’t Samsung devices rooted and using hotspot? Of course there are Samsung devices able to use hotspot. Everyone is entitled to their opinion wether it’s Android or Apple. I read your comment and say to myself, wtf?!?! You have a nexus and it’s not rooted running a custom rom??? Suck it noob! LOL!

    • If there coverage wasn’t so damn good in my area (vs others), plus if Verizon Land Line offered DSL in this area (I have zero baseband options other then dial up), I’d drop Verizon like a bad habit.

    • This is not a new way to screw customers. This is a way to keep customers from screwing them. We made an agreement not to tether without paying extra.

      • Is there really a line in Verizon’s old unlimited data plan contract that states we are violating the contract by using a third party app to tether without paying?

  • Here is the work around. Connect your phone via usb tether (pdanet). Then use the pdanet client for pc or mac. From there connect until you have internet connection on your computer. Right click the pdanet option until you see WiFi beta………………………….. Flag this post once the message has been recieved!

    • I plugged my S4 into my MacBook, and nothing.
I hate Android. Not having Internet makes me hate it more (I know it’s Verizon, so the phone doesn’t matter)

      • It won’t work on an iPhone or Windows Phone either. Blaming Android because you don’t want to pay for tethering…

        • It works for iPhone, my brother has had no issues. And my ‘blame’ is w Android in general. Explain how I can go through the S3 (& later the S4) about once a month, yet my iPhone 8gb 3g still works?

And I have no problem paying for tethering. Why not jack my bill up more? I’m already shelling out over $250/mo for unlimited, adding tethering is fine, save for the fact VZW is telling me how to use my data.

          • You can not tether with an iPhone running iOS 8/9 on Verizon unlimited, unless you jailbreak. I had a 6S and just like everyone else, it makes you sign up for tethering.

          • You absolutely cannot use tethering on an iPhone in the newer updates without jailbreaking. Also, iPhones on Verizon can’t even use data while on a phone call. It’s obvious you love the iPhone so just switch over. Use what you like and stop complaining because you have an old crappy Samsung.

    • Correction: The Mac client for PdaNet does NOT support wifi sharing (beta). Only the Windows client does.
Also, I was not able to share the PdaNet connection using the built in internet sharing functionality in OSX.

      • Same. I was getting my wifi and/or ethernet connection pulling up a 169 IP. Time to get a windows computer..

        • Sorry to hear you’re in the same boat 🙁
Do you have Windows installed in bootcamp? It’d be interesting to see if PdaNet wifi sharing would work there. It doesn’t work when I try to do it in Windows running on Parallels.

    • Worked for me! It’s not wireless tether, but at least I can still use my unlimited plan as I I agree to and pay for with my carrier. Thanks! Note4 to Windows 7.

  • Since Verizon is again targeting unlimited data users for no reason at all by raising the price, maybe we can get the FCC to open up tethering to us too.

  • you can still use foxfi to wifi, here is a hint, you will need to do some research, but usb tether to laptop then to wifi hotspot, laptop will be set as a hotspot sharing internet, oh and I do pay the extra 20 for my original teather plan on unlimited plan

  • You’re supposed to PAY for tethering if you have unlimited data. If you aren’t then you are STEALING. It’s unlimited data users tethering and then using hundreds of GB a month is why Verizon is trying to get people off unlimited data. Go ahead keep it up Verizon will just kill off unlimited data for good or jack up your price another $20 next year. Don’t believe me? If I told you 6 months ago Verizon would increase unlimited data by $20 a month in November would you have believed that? Nope.

    • Well fewer than 1% is all that is left of unlimited data users on verizon. Would imagine a small % of that % use triple digit GB.

    • Relax dude. Not everyone who tethers uses hundreds of gigs. Like me, many want to tether for that rare 1-2 times per month where there is no WiFi and they need to use their laptop, using maybe a couple hundreds megs.

    • when i got unlimited data all those years ago, tethering was free. They are constantly trying to charge people for services that they liked. There is nothing illegal about an app that lets you activate the hotspot via a third party (hense all the hotspot apps). Also… 178 GB last month. BOOM!

        • I have used well in excess of 200GB a time or two. Which is still below most household ISP data caps.
Downloading steam games, hd streaming, etc. really eats it up.

          • Damn.
I use it bc I freelance, and am on the go, so being able to connect is tons better than typing an article on my phone.

          • Agree on that! Have read some users using over 500GB before, though! Can see how it is possible if you have very good speeds and connection, with multiple users and lots of netflix..

          • The most I ever used was 260GB on my line. I have two unlimited plans, though. Between both lines, we average more than 300GB every month. I’ve been more than 400GB before, but not quite hit the 500GB mark. With Verizon acting like tools, I’m tempted to make a massive upload/download cue and torrent nonstop for for a few weeks.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
(action) They tried to limit my data
(reaction) I double my data usage

    • The core problem with paying for tethering is tethering is not a service. Tethering is a function of the hardware and nothing else. It’s a cash grab, always has and always been.

I don’t use it for my home internet so I don’t see a problem with doing it on occasion when I really need it and don’t have access to WiFi. But I sure as hell am not paying monthly for it. That would be like the water company saying “you get a pipe into your house to use the water as you see fit… oh but wait, if you hook that pipe up to a shower head, you have to pay us another $20 a month”… would you just pay that or ignore them and use the water you paid for as you see fit? The water came into your house, past your meter, you paid for it… why should they have the right to tell you where you can and can’t route the pipe to after the meter?

    • So if you view/use downloaded content on your phone, it is somehow different if you view/use it on a device that is tethering from that phone…even though you are already paying for unlimited data.

      Makes perfect sense. /s

    • So I connect my phone via HDMI/ HMI adapter to my TV to cast my screen and watch movies and play games (Before chromecast) and that is stealing? Because this is exactly what people are doing connecting devices to other mediums to transfer the same content you pay for. Transferring my data stream to a tablet or a PC one at a time/ individual use is technically allowed.

It would technically be stealing if you used several devices at a time using simultaneous data streams to multiple devices at a time or offered your tethering to a group of people at once.

    • What verizon is doing is illegal. Its like you buying a car and paying a monthly bill for you to have it in your drive may and then paying an additional fee if you actually want to take your car somewhere.

  • I love how people are upset about this. FYI: You were STEALING the ability to do this in the first place, and got away with it for YEARS! Wake your entitled ass up

      • Yes, unlimited data for your device. It’s not unlimited for all your devices and all your friends and family’s devices.

        • Ill copy this from David Verba below:

My plan says unlimited data, not unlimited data so long as it’s through my smart phone. Would it make you feel better if I used say 5gb of data, then put my sim in a different phone and use 5gb more and so on and so forth? No slick, unlimited data is just that – unlimited data. I pay Time Warner far less for my unlimited data cable internet, should I only use my computer? Is it cool I have a wireless router to connect other devices to this unlimited data plan I have with Time Warner? You know, kinda how people use their phones as a router with their ***unlimited data*** plan Verizon of which they’re paying a much higher price.

Unlimited is unlimited. Using unlimited however you wish isn’t illicit behavior, it’s using the plan exactly as intended – unlimitedly.

    • It’s hard to feel sorry for the carrier though. You buy data and then they still tell you how to use it.

Tethering restrictions are nothing more than a ploy to double charge you.

      • It’s hard to feel sorry for anyone in this situation. This is why I left Verizon years ago, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.

    • We pay for the data. It’s not stealing. Verizon was cheating subscribers out of a function they never should have had to pay for to begin with.

      • No, you pay for unlimited data to your one device. The hotspot ability has always been an additional charge. And while your opinion is in line with other carrier’s philosophy, it is not part of Verizon’s policy.

        • Its about $$$, look at cable companies, I had seven tvs connected and paid $89/mon now I am required to have a box on each one adding extra $50 to my bill… its just a way for them to get more $$$ …its their fault for not looking at future. same principle , if they can get more $ they will find a way.

          • Now in some areas they are putting invisible caps on your internet usage. Even though their is no additional charge for them to cap your internet. Its just a way to over-bill you if you go over your “minutes” (bandwidth). These cable corporations are becoming monopolies.. There is a story on them how they don’t even compete anymore for territory. Just stay in established areas and make profits. I’m sure they also receive subsidies like all major corporations.

        • This was offered for Free originally for 2 years before they decided to charge people for it.

    • That’s the carriers fault for selling us unlimited data in the first place. We are still using our phone to access the network.

    • Verizon has been stealing our personal info for years and SELLING IT FOR A PROFIT! You wake up!

    • How are you stealing. You’ve paid for the data monthly. Data doesn’t care what item is using it.

    • IMO it was a bait and switch…Verizon sucked in customers with hotspot availability and then yanked it out from under them. If they were honest they would just end all unlimited plans completely, but they want to give the illusion of unlimited data. So yeah, I have would no problem “stealing” something they owe me anyway.

Fortunately, for me these headaches are a non-issue. I dumped Verizon for the much-less-bossy TMobile. Life only got better.

      • I have a phone Verizon hasn’t touched and doesn’t (yet?) sell — Moto X Pure Edition — and I get the exact same behavior as @hoosiercub88:disqus shows in those screenshots above.

      • As Cael said, I don’t think you need FoxFi to enable hotspot on Nexus 6P. Just use the built in hotspot feature of Android and it should work without the subscription prompt.

    • Why are you using FoxFi on your Nexus 6P? The native hotspot feature works just fine even if you aren’t rooted. This is why FoxFi works for you, because it works even without FoxFi.

          • It works on the Moto x Pure on Verizon with ULD also. The deal is any phone you can use on Verizon that you can buy not from Verizon. Verizon hasn’t added a layer of software to check your subscription on these Google Play phones or non, VZ purchased phones.

        • Native wifi tethering works on bith Nexus 6 and Nexua 6P with VZW UDP. I tested with both phones. I used my existing SIM. And I don’t have a tethering plan. Inam forced to use FoxFi on my S5 because VZW modifies the tethering app on the phonea they supply to call home and check for subscription. All FoxFi does is create a VPN to its own server and fool VZW modified tethering app into thinking you have a subscription. Very neat trick. I think FoxFi service had some issue for last few days, and has been fixed now.

      • Not true. I have a 6p on Cricket and it most certainly does NOT work. Didn’t even work through FoxFi.

      • If you’re on a tiered data plan native tethering works, because there’s no additional charge for tethering. This article is about unlimited data plans, which still requires the customer to pay $30 for tethering. Native tethering doesn’t usually work for unlimited customers who are not paying for tethering.
Are you on an unlimited data plan without a tethering subscription?

        • I am on unlimited, and check xda, everything says the native hotspot works just fine with Verizon unlimited, but not other carriers for some reason

        • Jake you can’t pay $30, or you’ll lose unlimited data. According to the Verizon rep I spoke with yesterday.

        • Native tethering works with my stock (locked bootloader) Nexus 6P on VZW UDP
No provision check performed at all.

        • I can confirm that, at least one week ago, native wifi tethering on Nexus 6P Marshmallow worked fine with VZW UDP plan. The native client doesn’t check with VZW for subscription. That “feature” is only on phones that VZW provides.

    • Is there anything different about the Nexus 6P from the Nexus 6 that allows this ? Did you have to do anything special from within the app to allow this to happen ? When I choose Activate WiFi I get a subscription message. “To use this Hotspot, you need to subscribe to the Mobile Hotspot service.”

        • That’s true, but I thought the OS was slightly different if you use the Google OTA versus the carrier version ? That’s why the IMEI issue for activation for new customers happened early on when the Nexus 6 was released as Verizon had their own bloatware on the Nexus 6 while the Google Play Store version didn’t. Also udpates passed from Verizon didn’t always hit the non-vzw Nexus as easily and Google had to do some workarounds with unifying updates to fix this.

      • Not that I’m aware of. Had this been asked 3-4 days ago, I could’ve tried from my nexus 6. No didn’t do anything special at all. I don’t get subscription message. It just works.

      • Good questio, first thin I tried with my N6 back in Feb was foxfi, and it did not work, nor did it work with my SG3 and having ULD.

I have been blocked by Verizon using FoxFi for almost 2 years on all my devices, non rooted. I always got a Verizon message telling me I could not access unless I changed my account to pay for tethering.

      • As long as your Nexus 6/6P isn’t touched by VZW, native wifi tethering should work without any issues on both lollipop and marshmallow (I tested both). I used my existing SIM and have VZW ULD plan

    • Why use foxfi when just a simple unlock would allow it to work under the hotspot setting? Been using it for my tablet at college since their WiFi never works

    • On the Nexus 6p You don’t need Fox Fi , just turn on mobile Hotspot and it works perfect. I stopped using Fox Fi when I fot the Nexus 6P.

  • I’ve had issues with FoxFi since Kitkat. I’ve used the build.prop hack and used the built in hotspot tether for ages.

  • Actually they can’t charge more $ for unlimitted they r bound by the same rule and law that kept them from being able to take customers from unlim to limit..also verizon tried to keep foxfi from access but foxffi sued them and won..verizon legally cant block foxfi, all they can do is do a update to counter but eventually foxfi will crack it..

    • The FCC bent over when they challenged them on this, and said unlimited was an “exception” and they were allowed to charge for tethering on that plan. Which is still against the Block C rules, but someone should challenge it again because its clearly against the spirit of the rules.

      • The exceptions are what worries me. They might not be able to charge more for the plan, but they might get an exception that allows them to charge special fees for data handling or some other trumpped up rule.

      • Something about how Unlimited was offered before C-Block rules and that old discontinued plans were not affected by C-Block because they were not offered anymore. I guess all Legacy plans before Cblock applies not just unlimited.

  • This improves the Verizon experience for those who pay more proportionally to what they actually use. If it didn’t matter, Verizon wouldn’t have bothered to address the issue.

    • What you say is true, except if you actually believe Verizon didn’t do it specifically because they saw an opportunity to milk more money out of customers. If they didn’t think it would lead to more money, they wouldn’t have bothered. On the flip side, I don’t feel bad for fools who lost their ability to steal services, even if it is from Verizon.

      • You can’t steal what you pay for. What you are doing is getting what Verizon sold to you as a customer when you signed up.

        • If you have tethering in your contract with Verizon, and they aren’t providing it, then that’s called breach of contract. Problem is, so many people are “stealing” tethering from them instead of launching a class-action lawsuit that I have to believe it isn’t stated in their contracts, they just feel like it should be.

I’m not arguing whether or not people should get tethering (I believe it should be included, that’s why I don’t do business with Verizon), I’m arguing that you get what you get when you choose to do business with a company that routinely treats their customers like they’re too stupid to know any better. As a Verizon customer you have choices: Either sue Verizon for not providing services promised, change carriers to one that gives you what you want, or steal services from them. I’m assuming you choose theft.

          • You choose to call it “theft”. I choose to call it use of services. If it were truly theft, Verizon would and could come after us with lawsuits and even criminal charges. Can’t and will not happen.

          • Call it whatever you want, you’re still stealing and whether or not you or I think Verizon deserves it is beside the point. They don’t pursue it because it’s relatively minor and it would more than likely cause negative publicity, so quietly cutting off your ability to do it serves the purpose and only leaves the guilty to complain to people who really couldn’t care less about their plight because we’re smart enough not to do business with VZW.

          • “Call it whatever you want”. That’s exactly what I did. YOU are the smart @ss who’s trying to force YOUR definition on those of us who hold Verizon to what they have promised.

          • Think of it like this. If you have your car towed, but you know you weren’t parked illegally and have proof of that, are you going to steal your car back, or go through the legal channels to get it back? In one scenario, whether you’re in the right or not, you get a court date and possibly a record, the other gets you your car back with a little hassle.

Or, you buy a package deal from your local box store, and they forget to include a piece of the package. Do you break into the store and steal the item you were promised thinking it’s ok because “You were promised it”, or do you go through the proper channels to get what you were promised?

So if what you’re saying is true, that Verizon promised you tethering and then took it away (I don’t believe this), you have recourse to get it back. If what you’re saying is just your imagination and overripe sense of entitlement speaking (which I believe it is), Verizon can absolutely come after you for it – you should consider yourself lucky that they feel it’s easier to just cut off your ability to steal from them instead of pressing charges.

          • You failed your class on analogies, so it’s not necessary to address them. I would like for them to press charges. I would love for those of us who are on this side to appear in court in the form of a lawsuit. I’m not worried, and neither should you be. For someone who has no horse in this race, you seem to fully invested. I wonder why.

          • There really is no other customer more annoying than an overly entitled VZW subscriber crying they got screwed, yet refusing to do anything about it (except steal).

          • Yes there is. It’s the irritating T-Mobile customer who wishes he had unlimited data making himself feel better by accusing the one who have it of stealing.

          • Tethering is not stealing…

It’s like buying a car.. paging a monthly payment for your car and then paying an additional fee to actually drive it some where or the dealert hip dictating where you drive your car to. .

        • Well, more cars on roads causes more damage but I’ll bet you wouldn’t stand for someone limiting your travel for other people to have a smoother ride.

          • Three things:

            1. Fuel taxes, tolls, and income brackets address your analogy with a proportionality that doesn’t exist wrt tethering.

            2. “Unlimited” means for that device , not anything you can feed with it. Tethering is like feeding your entire family for the price of one at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

            3. Verizon can and will do just fine without the few thousand who are angered by the unlimited price increases and efforts to stop unlimited tethering.

            (drops mic, exits stage right)

          • Just the one device alone can use up a ton of data.. It does not take tethering to have high data usage, which is what it all comes down to in the end. I bet a good chunk of the unlimited users do not even tether, yet still use a lot of data.

          • 1. We’ve already paid extra for the data via tethering and an additional $20 dollars per month they’ve added to the bill.

            2. “Unlimited” means for that device”. Bullsh!t. That’s what YOU decided it means. When I signed up with Verizon, it made no specifics about tethering specific to the phone itself.

            3. That’s a point which nobody has argued.

Pick the mic back up, ’cause you aren’t as clever as you think you are. Besides, I own the Moto X Pure. My tethering works just fine.

          • True, but luckily I’ve been buying my phones outright. Verizon is getting to the point where there will be a threshold where it no longer makes sense to stay with them. At that point, I don’t want to be in a contract. I’ll just walk away.

          • Wrong, because the entire family pays for their own data. You act like a whole family is following one guy around for his wifi hotspot.. Stop listening to Trump, it causes brain malfunctions.

        • It is the responsibility of the provider to maintain the network in order to provide for the needs of its consumers (all consumers). Any capacity restrictions on Verizon’s network is Verizon’s fault and most likely intentional as a way to justify charging more (identify a demand, limit the supply, inflate prices).

Either way, there have been no reports of failing networks to justify the change according to your logic. Like everyone has said, this is nothing more than a simple money grab by Verizon

    • un·lim·it·ed
      ˌənˈlimidəd/
      adjective
not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent.
“the range of possible adaptations was unlimited”
synonyms: inexhaustible, limitless, illimitable, boundless, immeasurable, incalculable, untold, infinite, endless, bottomless, never-ending

  • I have a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx and it is still working. I was having some issues last weekend, but I just kept trying to connect and it worked. The key I found was to keep the App on 24/7 and never turn it off.

Hopefully others with issues get theirs working again.

      • Where else would they? Doesn’t Verizon have service everywhere? Oh wait…maybe they don’t. Most abuse it at home to cover all of their devices. Sorry. Life’s not the easy bud.

        • Where else would people tether besides at home? You must not go out. For me, it’s at airports that charge you extensive fees for their WiFi, in the car as a passenger trying to get some work done, on a bus/train without WiFI, hotel where they charge you a daily WiFi fee, or if you want to use your laptop outside away from any stores or buildings.

        • It is not necessarily abusing if it is touted as “unlimited” 1GB or 100GB, Not to mention very few people have unlimited data(less than 1%), even fewer use absurd amounts.

          • un·lim·it·ed
            ˌənˈlimidəd/
            adjective
not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent.
“the range of possible adaptations was unlimited”
synonyms: inexhaustible, limitless, illimitable, boundless, immeasurable, incalculable, untold, infinite, endless, bottomless, never-ending

So yes, when you’re paying a premium for something unlimited, then it shouldn’t have any, well, limits. I don’t even use 5gb a month but I keep my unlimited out of spite. Use 1gb use a 1tb it’s entirely up to you if you’re paying for UNLIMITED.

          • Unlimited on a smartphone right? Not unlimited to connect every device in your house bc you can’t get fast home Internet or you’re too cheap to pay.

          • Well 200GB of data used on a smartphone, or 200GB of data on a smarthphone with 5 devices tethered to it, would it really make a difference…

          • My plan says unlimited data, not unlimited data so long as it’s through my smart phone.

          • You can twist whatever you want but I think most level headed people understand that mobile internet is supposed to be for your smartphone.
Just get home internet service and stop trying to run everything off a smartphone.

          • Wrong again – if it’s supposed to be used only on your smartphone why is tethering even an option? No, it’s not just for your smartphone – it’s data pure and simple and in this case unlimited. Would you make the same argument about a tiered plan? I think not. Now you’ll probably be inclined to make the argument people are circumventing Verizon’s money grab for an additional $30 to use that data on other devices by using FoxFi – but apparently those level headed folks over at the FCC seem to agree using FoxFi is perfectly fine.

I do pay for home internet – $64.99/mo for Timewarner Extreme and $228/mo to Verizon. 100’s of GB on Timewarner 10’s of GB on Verizon – weird the monetary amounts don’t add up….

          • What about people who tether outside of their homes? There are many use cases for tethering a laptop when you are away from home.

          • Yes, that’s perfectly fine. I’m just saying bc you have unlimited data doesn’t necessarily mean you get unlimited tethering with it.
I have a unlimited data plan on tmobile with 7gb of tethering included.

          • While I’d love to agree with you, it doesn’t exactly work that way. It’s more similar to a cable bill or renting an apartment or house works. You sign a contract which locks in your rate while under that contract period only, after that you nor the carrier is under any obligation to continue service or at the same rates. Of course it wouldn’t be in their best interest to cancel or raise your rates because it would just encourage your to take service to another carrier. In the case of UDP, they know they have a hook, and not likely to leave over it.

        • I have unlimited and do not tether at home… however i do use it for my laptop on my daily commute on the train back and forth to work everyday

        • …I use tethering so I can work at the airport (airport wifi is crap), on road trips, in restaurants, at locations with bad wifi. I never use it at home. That being said, wired FoxFi (aka Pdanet) still works fine, but that only helps people in my situation out. The ones who used FoxFi to tether multiple devices are out of luck, it would seem.

          • If on a windows PC with a wifi adapter you can share the usb connected pdanet connection. Or via ethernet to a router and broadcast wifi that way.

      • It’s the main reason there are limits to tethering, so yeah, they do. I know a few people who have disconnected their internet and tried tethering their computer and/or laptops and tablets. It’s a pain, but if it works, and it could save you significant money.

  • I’m using the N6P and the built in hotspot is working for me without having to sign up for a subscription. Is that weird, or is it working as designed? Fox FI is also working fine on my N6P

  • the timing? this was perfectly timed im sure by Verizon. glad i went Nexus and hope i dont have to worry about any interruptions.

  • Yeah i’ve got a nexus so i just change the build prob. but my next phone might not be one so that sucks. But i really don’t use tether all that much in the long run not that big of a deal.
