Remember those Android Wear improvements that Engineering Director David Singleton outlined last month? According to reports from reddit users, it seems a few are coming to fruition in the form of an over-the-air update for G Watch units.

The first of two planned Wear updates before the end of this year, firmware 4.4W.2 (build KNX01Q), introduces offline music playback and GPS support. For the G Watch, that translates to the addition of a “Play Music” button and Bluetooth selection menu for switching devices during music playback, however, there does not seem to be a way to transfer music between the watch and a connected smartphone yet.

The G Watch lacks the hardware to take advantage of GPS distance and speed tracking, of course, but that support is intended for the as-yet unreleased Sony Smartwatch 3.

Assuming all goes well, we can probably expect other Wear devices to receive the update soon. Before that happens, we are expecting clarification from Google regarding music transfer.

Next on the horizon? Downloadable watch faces. That is an update we are eagerly anticipating.
