Samsung Reportedly Working on Circular Smartwatch of Its Own

samsung logo

As if there were not enough already, LG and Motorola are not the only companies with plans to release circle-shaped smartwatches. The SIM-enabled Gear 2 Solo, expected to debut alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at next week’s Unpacked, will retain the conventional geometry of its predecessors, but Samsung’s newest, unannounced Gear – a model reportedly under development – is reportedly circular, according to a SamMobile source familiar with the company’s plans.

Although virtually everything about the device is seemingly in flux, SamMobile’s source was unable to confirm the smartwatch’s release date or even operating system, but news of Samsung designing circular compliment to its existing Gear line wouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

Anecdotally, the Moto 360 is the year’s most anticipated smartwatch, largely in part to its premium materials and deferential design. In a few months’ time, Samsung may attempt to replicate Motorola’s putative success with a circular wristwatch of its own.

  • William Oh

I like how Samsung is branded for ‘replicating’ other company products when they are the ones replicating Samsung.
They’re not even the first to make a circular watch after motorola, LG and others have announced it as well.
& circular watches were going to happen sooner or later with or without motorola.

It’s a shame really, you start some crap and everyone hops on the troll bandwagon.

  • shamatuu

so that makes everyone making a round watch so why did both LG and Samsung make the square one to begin with?. If i bought either ones i will be pissed.

    • 213ninja

because square watches and round watches and oval watches and mad other shaped watches all actually already exist. i’m not mad about this. i anticipated it. everyone should have…

  • Casey Artner

I really hope they realize it has much less to do with the shape than the focus on design and quality…

  • 213ninja

why is this about copying? hasn’t there been square, round, rectangle, and even more odd shaped traditional wrist watches made??? i imagine we’ll see all of those designs tested by smartwatch makers. BFD. i’m looking forward to all of them.

  • SteveTheMan

    *differential design ;)

  • Sean Walton

Not a shocker, Samsung copies everyone.

    • weethomas

Right, because Motorola invented the circular watch shape.

  • The Dude

If Moto were Apple they’d have patented the ‘circular smartwatch’. Although I’m sure Apple will get tons of nonsensical patents for iWatch anyway.

  • jamaall

    Motorola is master race.

  • The Dude

What the hell? Is circular the new craze?? Where are my triangular watches ?!

Seriously, I’d rather have a rectangular smartwatch. A circular one makes about as much sense as a circular tv or smartphone. Gimme more surface are for more info anyday.

    • Diablo81588

You just look like a giant nerd wearing a square watch.

    • Aaron

Big square watches are less fashionable right now. The smartwatch is meant to be a fashion accessory as much as it is a smartphone accessory. Wait until the iWatch is released. It will be as if watches were never cool until Apple made one.

  • RoadsterHD1

Well they copy Iphone they may as well copy motorola too. :)

    • jimt

What they haven’t shown is the apple home button at the 6 o’clock position on the samsung watch. /s

    • pyro74boy .

Really is that so? I guess that means that Apple does not copy Samsung because the rumored iphone6 [Or whatever Apple is calling it] is going to be the same size as the Note phones and the last time I checked Samsung had this design first before ANYONE else did. LOL I love it how people like you are quick to call Sammy out on this but you forget that Apple seems to copy more then everyone else.

      • RoadsterHD1

Take it easy pyro boy I’m just kidding, don’t burn down my house….. ;)

        • Anfronie

People are getting tired of that sorry apple cop-out.

  • Michael

I’m sure they will come up with something witty for the name, like Gear Wheel.

  • Rodeojones000

    Competition is a good thing.

  • mustbepbs

    This just in:

    Water is wet.

    More at 11.

  • https://www.heartbleedbug.com/ Intellectua1

If its not the Moto 360 me no interested..

  • BRIAN MUENTER

    TIZEN round watch!! sweet!!….pause not!

  • Vermin_Cain

    Of course they are.

  • JSo

But will it have Android Wear? Probably not.

    • Cael

You know there will be a Tizen, Android Wear, and Tizen that can make calls on its own.

      • Kevin

and an active one, and a mini, and a mega, and a note, and who knows how many other variations

    • Droid Ronin

Hopefully it won’t have a Touchwizzed Android Wear.

  • archercc

Damn, circular smart-watches are going to be played out even before the first one is released.

    • Walter Partlo

Wouldn’t it be horrible if in the near future all smartwatches just looked like watches? No actually, that is the preffered outcome. :)

      • archercc

Ive really just been hoping for the “regular watch but with a LCD face that would allow it to transitino to a smartwatch with minimal functionality” for a while.

  • Alec

Doesn’t have anything to do with the article, still funny though

    • Cael

LBR, this is what is going to happen eventually

    • Jack

Given that Apple is coming out with 2 huge phones in response to Samsung, the picture should be reversed.

Everyone knew that large phones were the way to go, even Apple, but Apple stubbornly refused to make larger phones in order to avoid embarrassment after vehemently insisting for years that 3.5″ was the prefect size, and then suddenly 4″ was the prefect size.

  • verbal_judo2

i thought we saw samsung patent weeks ago for round smart watch designs. Am I misremembering?

  • Bryan Mills
    • PoisonApple31

Shouldn’t you be busy filming Taken 3?

      • Bryan Mills

Finally somebody gets it. Holy sh!t. Took em long enough.

January 2015 you can see me in theaters for Taken 3.

        • T4rd

Well it’s kinda odd that a Bryan Mills uses a Tyler Durden avatar. =p

          • Bryan Mills

Liam is sexy too, but Brad >>

          • PoisonApple31

Matt Damon? I suppose Jason Bourne was too obvious…

          • Bryan Mills

            Everybody knows Bourne.

          • JSo

Well Tyler Durden is a result of schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder so…..

  • Burger

Now every company wants to create a watch similar to the Moto 360. HA!

    • PoisonApple31

And they are all going to run the same boring OS!

      • Aaron

As opposed to what, the iWatch?

    • Bryan Mills

      Yeah Moto invented watches

      • Burger

If your going to be smart at least be accurate I never said they invented watches. The Moto 360 is the only smart watch to my knowledge that has a round display.

        • Bryan Mills

But by what you’re saying, Moto copies circular watches but just added smart features. Same with other OEMs

        • Walter Partlo

          Almost round.

          • jimt

Yeh sort of a flat tire.

        • pyro74boy .

Battery live is still going to suck on all of these trust me. The 360 trust like the rest of these smartwatches are all gimmicks.

          • King Lo

Moto already has a smartwatch out that has 3 days battery life.

          • pyro74boy .

3 days is not anywhere near good enough. You can buy a real watch [NOT A SMARTWATCH] that the battery will last a year or longer so what’s your point?

          • weethomas

What’s your point? A dumb watch can’t display notification from your phone.

Landlines don’t need batteries at all yet mobile phones seems to have done a number on their sales.

          • pyro74boy .

I don’t need something on my rest that my smartphone can already do and I’m still waiting for someone to name one single thing that a smartwatch can do that a smartphone can’t do? I can already get things done lighting fast on my smartphone just the way it is. These Android wear devices are just gimmicks and if you want to buy one all power to you and to each their own but to me these are all just useless devices for people to waste their money on. Maybe some day I will change my mind in a few years but they would have to do something very amazing to get me to spent over $250 bucks on or at least come way down in price. I think of so many other things I would much rather waste $250 bucks on vs a device that is full of gimmicks. But like I said that’s just me.

          • weethomas

That’s a dumb response. Everything your smartphone can do my laptop can too. Yet people seem to buy both smartphones and laptops, even when they could save money.

          • pyro74boy .

It’s not a dumb response it’s how I feel that’s not the same thing. I make a valid point and that’s the best you can do? LOL

          • weethomas

Either it’s your feelings or a valid point. Choose one, then I’ll respond.

          • pyro74boy .

            Quit trolling my posts.

          • weethomas

? We call this responding to a comment.

          • pyro74boy .

My valid points where when I was explaining to you why I don’t want to waste my money on them. So I already answered both of your questions and the best you could do was act stupid and claim this response was dumb. LOL You pretty much walked yourself into this all by yourself. And if you could read I even said and I quote [these Android wear devices are just gimmicks and if you want to buy one
all power to you and to each their own but to me these are all just
useless devices for people to waste their money on] and being that I’m not denying anything I said or how I said you have no leg to stand on. Happy trolling.

          • weethomas

            You’ve not answered anything.

You said “3 days is not anywhere near good enough. You can buy a real watch [NOT A SMARTWATCH] that the battery will last a year or longer so what’s your point?”

I responded “What’s your point? A dumb watch can’t display notification from your phone.

Landlines don’t need batteries at all yet mobile phones seems to have done a number on their sales.”

You responded with crap about smartwatches not doing things smartphones can do. I reminded you that smartphones don’t do things laptops can’t do.

Then, you fall back to “well, I don’t want to spend money on it because I think it is stupid”.

Which is an opinion, but not a valid argument. And knowing that, you try to snow me by calling “troll”.

Sorry, not going to be easy for you to walk this one back.

          • pyro74boy .

And when was I denying anything I said or how I said it?

Quote [I’m not denying anything I said or how I said you have no leg to stand on. Happy trolling.]

I posted this before you tried to call me out on anything so it might be helpful for you to know this next time you try to call me out on something when I’m not going back on anything I said and I will even be more then happy yo quote everything I said word for word.

            quote

You can’t accuse me of it being a dumb response when this is truly how I feel.

Yes I love trolling you trolls it makes for great entertainment. LOL

          • weethomas

It’s a dumb response because “3 days is not anywhere near good enough. You can buy a real watch [NOT A SMARTWATCH] that the battery will last a year or longer so what’s your point?” is not a feeling.

I replied to that. Then you respond with your feelings. Changing up the discussion partway so you can skate out after spouting BS.

Pointing out your crap isn’t trolling.

          • pyro74boy .

What’s your point? A dumb watch can’t display notification from your phone.

but will it still be able to tell time after the battery is dead in 3 or even 4 days tops? LOL

Hows that for a response. You call it crap when I replied back before you even responded to any of my posts with this post [3 days is not anywhere near good enough. You can buy a real watch [NOT A
SMARTWATCH] that the battery will last a year or longer so what’s your
            point?

So remember that the next time you look at your notifications on your smartwatch and someone asks you what time it is and you start crying because you just noticed that it’s been past 3 days and you forgot to charge your battery on your Android wear device so you have to end up pulling your smartphone out of your pocket anyway. So come on you wanted to go there so lets go there. Nice try but your points still have not been justified

          • weethomas

No it won’t. Just like your smartphone won’t be able to tell time after the battery is dead in 3 or even 4 days. Yet somehow people keep using smartphones.

You’re back to saying dumb things again.

          • pyro74boy .

I have gotten much more then 3 days out of my smartphone I have gone over a week and a half on light use on my smartphone and the last time I checked over a week is longer then 3 days. And before you start to reply with that can’t happen you where not here so you can’t speak for me so don’t even think about trying. I have also gone 3 to 4 days on pretty heavy use also.

Also for all out telling time a real watch [Not an Android wear device] is going to be better at being able to tell time for the simple fact that you don’t have to worry about charging the battery every 3 or 4 days and this was and still is my point and it’s real sad that I have to spell this out word for word because when I made the comment about the battery only being able to last 3 days compared to what I refer to as a real watch the difference in battery life is the difference between night and day.

Looks like someone is all butt-hurt over the fact that they wasted over $200 bucks on an Android wear device.

            HAPPY TROLLING.

          • weethomas

Wow, now you’re making up more BS.

Haha, I finally figured it out. I’m the one being trolled.

            Good job!

          • pyro74boy .

You call it BS. I call it valid points as to why I don’t feel the need to waste my money on something that I don’t feel I need and would much rather waste it on something else that my smartphone can’t do. Sorry but if you can’t tell the difference between a valid point that I made and what you refer to as being BS. as you claim then that’s your issue and not mine.

I also seem to remember it was you and your failed attempts who tried to call me out on this in the first place so yes I’m trolling the troll. LOL

          • weethomas

            Give it up troll.

          • pyro74boy .

I love trolling the real troll. LOL

          • weethomas

            Expect a troll response.

          • pyro74boy .

I have until 5am that’s when I go to work. Also I’m trolling you and I’m not denying the fact that I’m trolling the troll.

          • pyro74boy .

my response [It’s not a dumb response it’s how I feel that’s not the same thing. I make a valid point and that’s the best you can do? LOL]

Your response Either it’s your feelings or a valid point. Choose one, then I’ll respond.]

I was making a valid point as to why I don’t feel the need to waste my money on any of these Android wear devices and the best you could do was attack me and try to insult my intelligence. LOL

          • weethomas

Now you are. That wasn’t what my comment was directed at. If you happen to be smarter than you come across, good for you.

          • pyro74boy .

I’m still not denying anything I said or how I said it. You claim that you’re not a troll but your actions have shown otherwise.

          • weethomas

Again, showing you how facile your responses are does not make me a troll.

          • pyro74boy .

The fact that you keep on replying to my posts with your nonsense is proof enough that you’re a troll. Prove me wrong by not replying back once again.

I’m not holding my breath, LOL

      • Sean Walton
