Video: Google Play 4.9.13 Tour!

new google play 4913

The new version of Google Play is rolling out today as version 4.9.13. Up front, it doesn’t look like a massive overhaul, since the category and main pages haven’t been touched, but individual listings for apps, music, books, and movies have all been given a Material Design-like makeover. In other words, they are now super pretty with new sliding animations, layout changes, big imagery that takes center stage, and lots of white space (if that’s a good thing).

Since there are changes, we took a quick walk-through of them to make sure you aren’t completely confused when loading up Google Play the next time.

You can download v4.9.13 here.

*sigh* yes it’s pretty, but it’s a step back in usability. I am starting to worry that many Android L changes improve the looks at the cost of ease of use. Maybe I am just getting old and need time to adjust when things change…

    • Suicide_Note

Why do you feel it’s a step back in usability?

      • ilovetechnology

At a quick glance last night there was more visual clutter on individual listings and when you click to see more information about the app it opens in a totally separate pane/popup that you now have to close. Basically the navigation requires more mental effort to figure out where you are, and where you can go next. I’ll have to give it more of a look later, maybe I just didn’t “get it” at first try.

        • Suicide_Note

That’s interesting. I felt the new look was much less cluttered and easier to digest/navigate than the previous version.

I did notice on my N7 that swiping up from the bottom of the new ‘Read More’ pane would close it and return me to the app’s main page. The same feature doesn’t appear to be present on my N5, however. I thought it nice because then I didn’t have to scroll back up and tap the X to close the new pane and return to the app info. It helped reduce the confusion of where I was, as you put it.

I guess that as with anything new, it takes a little time to adjust.

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

I don’t like that they’ve hidden the developer website URL. Risky click with grey area developers and popular developer malware impersonators.

Since you didn’t show off the Tablet UI. Here’s a screenshot of it on my Nexus 10. It screams out Material Design.

That white background behind the on-screens is nasty. Just sayin’.

This makes me excited for Material Design inspired Google Music App…

      I’ll just be over here… waiting patiently…

      • Modify Play Search

Now if Google would mind fixing the damn search function in the Play store. Still don’t understad why a search engine doesn’t have an advanced search for their play store to allow searching inside sub-directories

  • Jeremy Gentry

how can i force this to update without downloading

    • Kyle Null

I don’t think you can. Why not just download it?

    • BigTimmay

You’ll still get future updates even if you download manually.

    • Nathan Bryant

It’s being pushed out. You can’t force what’s not there yet.

  • XvierX

I love that the music section has a listen button for all access subscribers.

    • El_Big_CHRIS

Nice. I dont know why google took so long for something like this. I’ll load it up when i get home

      • miri

At least for me, hitting “play all” would take me to the music app. rather than playing in the store. This is much better, though.
