Chrome for Android Updated, Brings Improved Text Rendering and Doodles on New Tabs

An update is being pushed out to the Chrome browser app for Android devices, one which includes improved text rendering, plus a multitude of bug fixes. Google also notes that upon opening a new tab page, a friendly Doodle will be there to greet your eyes.

In addition, a few security fixes have been addressed in this release, which includes a URL spoofing fix, as well as an origin policy bypass fix.

To grab the update, you should head into Google Play and see if the update is available for your device. If you don’t see it, blame Google’s staged rollouts and remain patient. It will come soon.

What’s New

  • Improved text rendering on non-mobile optimized sites.
  • Doodles return to the new tab page.
  • Lots of bug fixes and performance improvements!

Security fixes:

  • [$3000][352083] High CVE-2014-3159: Omnibox URL Spoofing (Android). Credit to Keita Haga.
  • [334204] Medium CVE-2014-3161: Same origin policy bypass (Android). Credit to Håvard Molland from Opera

Here’s an example of what I mean by changing resolution to 1000×1600.

  • Finally! I’ve been waiting….

Which version number are you talking about?

  • Andrew Thompson

It’s Google, so I use it.

  • FortitudineVincimus

    Quick controls would be nice.

  • Chad

How about a fix for searches/sites that do not appear and only goes to a white screen that has been happening for months on my Moto X? Selecting menu then settings then hitting the back button makes the site appear. Google has so many “irons in the fire” that no one thing (even search) works correctly!! But you’d never hear anything remotely negative about them on this site.

On HTC One (M7), I was having a similar problem. If I opened a new tab, then sites opened fine; but if I tried using the default tab that comes up when I opened Chrome, it always went to a white/blank page after acting like it was loading.

The good news is that this update appears to fix the problem for me. Assuming the two isses are the same (or at least related), then hopefully this update solves it for you as well.

      • Chad

I really hope so! From what you describe, it sounds like the same issue. Just checked for updates in play store but it hasn’t been pushed to me yet. Thank you for the helpful reply.

        • Allyn K C

Ugh – the update on the 16th fixed it, then an additional update on the 17th broke it again.

    • terrorist96

      Rotating the display fixes it.

  • William_Morris

Until you can put add-ons on it like adblock, it isn’t worth it.

    • FortitudineVincimus

Syncing from desktop to phone alone is WELL worth it

      • William_Morris

Firefox does that too… and allows for add ons like adblock.

    • HarvesterX

Is called download a good hosts ad block file and moving to /system/etc/hosts. Awesome because you can edit and pull from different lists if using adaway (which I use to make it easier to import from different lists).

Yeah but if not rooted I’d be unhappy too. That’s a very good specific reason Linux has “su’…to freaking administer your device.

  • JSo

Has anyone else been having sync issues where your tabs from your computer have a hard time showing up on your phone? And if they do they are slightly old and not the current ones you have open? If that’s a current bug, hopefully this update fixes it

    Aaand… No apk?

  • Jay Ward

It doesn’t have true text reflow, no built in flash support, no pie controls like stock browser….
    Until then, will not download

    • Michael

You’re never going to get flash support in Chrome. Sorry.

      • Jay Ward

That’s ok, as I don’t plan on downloading chrome for mobile ever.

        • hfoster52

Well there is no flash support for Android in general. (Yes, you can download the old apk and install, mess with settings, and hope it does work.) But the question is why?

          • Vasaline

            for porn sites

          • hfoster52

ha ha yeah I saw that.

          • Dean

Loads of porn sites work fine in chrome though.

          • tdurden64111

            “It’s not enough, dad!”

          • Jay Ward

            For porn sites. See above

    • Alex Boro

What do you need flash for anyways?

        • regkilla

          Get laid.

        • tylerc23

That’s why I always loved HTC Stock Browser, now in the M8, Verizon had to go and remove it so now I’m stuck using Dolphin Browser

      • HarvesterX

Not that I watch any but if I did ever look I’m pretty sure the companies have converted to html5 or just plain out stream to MX Player Pro (which you should have installed), That’s IF I were to watch them ..

    • hfoster52

      What do you use then?

    • regkilla

Who cares about Pie Controls. They’re hideous.

    • HarvesterX

I’m missing how this (the reflow video) is any different than what Chrome Beta (at least) has been doing? Everything done there I can do.

Tip: For a better viewing experience use the xposed app settings module and change resolution to 1000×1600 and whatever dpi you like (0 is default). Or changes the appearance of chrome totally and displays actual tabs at the top which disappear when not needed. Much cleaner look in my opinion…works best on the 5 inch plus displays.

Edit: Also forgot to mention doing this also will automatically display desktop versions of certain sites (but not all)
