Chromecast Adds WatchESPN, Major League Soccer, and Google+ Photos

Your Chromecast just became the ultimate hub for watching all things World Cup. Thanks to a new update to the WatchESPN app, you can now cast anything streamed through ESPN’s live streaming sports app to your TV, which includes all 64 World Cup games. That also includes the NBA Finals (which kick off Thursday) and the X Games.

Not interested in ESPN? What about Major League Soccer? MLS Matchday and MLS LIVE now have Chromecast support as well.

Finally, Google is giving Google+ some Chromecast live by now allowing you to cast photos and videos from G+ apps on iOS and Android.

What’s up with the new WatchESPN android app? I don’t see any cast button. Anyone have any luck casting WatchESPN from android to chromecast?

  • Lee Winkler

What version of Watch ESPN supports chromecast? Im at 2.2.1 and no updates available and no button….

  • Sarpedon1069

I don’t think people understand that the watchESPN requires a cable subscription to watch live sports. For a cord cutter or a cord never, watchESPN only gives one access to highlights. Smh

so easy for someone to share their email and pass with you

My goodness, finally I won’t have to worry about my kids taking over my TV, just WatchESPN and cast.

    Man, before Spotify.

  • andrew borrelli

I wish the NBC Live Extra app had chromecast support then I’d be DONE with cable today.

Still waiting for dolby digital + for Hbo Go….. HBO Go still useless until they add that feature.

  • Bigwavedave25

    WatchESPN! YES!!!

  • Graham Green

I love that MLS Live has been added, a pity its likely going away next season with the new deal MLS signed with ESPN.

Awesome. I just bought a Slimport cable to output my Nexus 7 to my TV a couple weeks ago for ESPN and TNT NBA Playoffs games. Now just need the TNT app to improve, get full screen, and Chromecast support.
    Go Spurs!

      First off, GO HEAT! :P

Otherwise, I’m in the same boat. If I could just get HD, reliable TNT/ESPN/ABC/CBS/FOX (later two for football) coverage I could get rid of cable TV. I can watch all my shows on Netflix or other such sites…I only pay for cable for sports…although the DVR is nice. That’s the one thing I’ll miss most…being able to watch a game at 1am because I was out all day.

Does this only work if you use Google+ to store your photos online? Because that’s a bummer, if true.

I just want to be able to cast my photos from my local storage in my phone or tablet. Anyone know?

    • Hooterman

Pretty sure that’s what AllCast is for.

      • Simon Belmont

Thanks. But that doesn’t answer my question.

Google should just build this basic functionality in. Just my opinion on the subject.

        • Hooterman

          I don’t disagree with you.

But I’ll also use this moment to recommend that you enable G+ Auto Backup. That way with this new update your local stuff will already be in the cloud and ready to cast. ;)

        • Pratik Holla

You can use dayframe to do this as well. Lets you cast from a variety of image sources.

  • Hooterman

Wait, they finally added G+ Photos support?!?

HOW IS THIS NOT THE HEADLINING ANNOUNCEMENT?!

    • Braden Abbott

I know right! Way bigger headline to me haha. I just tried it out and it works great, much better than any others I have tried

  • EC8CH

Now how ’bout Amazon Instant Video… you know for all us Prime customers?

  • Firelight

This only covers the Android app. The streaming web portal still does not send it to Chromecast. That’s a partial win & partial fail at the same time.

  • King of Nynex

For those of us who totally pay for our app logins, WatchESPN on the TV is like a mini-Christmas.

  • NoneOfYourBizzness

    Great updates!!!!

  • WAldenIV

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kevin

Why didn’t you mention Crunchy Roll? They’re adding Chromecast support! One stop shop for all anime. :D

  • ddh819

time to set up a tv on the deck

    • Eli Shirk

I was thinking the same thing, or a projector. WC viewing parties on the deck!

      • Miguel

Monday Night Football on the back yard.

  • Jpx

I’m literally on the verge of tears! WATCHESPN FINALLY! I hope TNT is next

  • paticao

too bad Watchespn doesnt work with directv!

    • Ray

      I know it sucks :(

      • paticao

        hopefully att will help us

        • Wilsonian

That’s what I’m hoping for. DIrectv is the best satellite provider for programming, IMHO, and our only other options are Dish and Mediacom Cable. Dish is on there, but the other two aren’t, so we have little options. I’m hoping AT&T helps out, especially since their own U-Verse is on there. The same goes for the Disney apps that my kids love. They could have full access to those on Roku and their devices, but Directv doesn’t allow it. Even though I pay them an arm and a leg every month for that content.

    • d-rock

That sucks! Good thing my brother is on Cox.

    • JoeTi

….or centurylink which is my DTV coupled service. C’mon guys, step it up!

  • Eric

Hopefully this means we’ll see NHL GameCenter soon.
