Google Camera App Makes Its Way to Google Play (Updated: With Download)

Google just posted a brand new Google Camera app to Google Play this morning, just like the rumor from a couple of weeks ago suggested.

At this time, we are unable to install it, but we are seeing a brand new UI from the screenshots, along with lens Blur effects, high resolution panoramas, and a 100% viewfinder listed in the description.

The app listing does say that the app only works with phones and tablets running Android 4.4+.

You have to clear your data and force stop your camera. Then go to play store and update. Worked on nexus 5.

  • thajack

I installed it on my AT&T GS3 (KitKat, Cyanogenmod) and everything but standard pictures seems to crash it.

  • lakshay kalra

As i swipe to the right to camera main screen, panorama and photo sphere icons are not there.whats this?

  • annaarron

There are so few settings… Google used to be extraordinary at having heaps of customization for alternatives however goo.gl/iLMrAo

  • CircularPastry

    Works on the HTC One

  • doczenith1

Not getting full res photo spheres on my Moto X. Nexus 7 (5mp sensor) is taking a 9728 x 4860 photo sphere while my Moto X (10mp sensor) is only taking a 6656 x 3326 photo sphere. Both set to maximum resolution in settings.

  • Sean Bello

I wish the Moto X could open it by using the camera gesture. not even an option.

  • Colton

    i just want 4.4 on my verizon s4 🙁

  • Giovinap

Installed on N5 and working great only thing can’t see the option button for the camera ie: scene and picture settings. I only have the grid, hdr+, flash and front facing options is this normal or have I completely missed something? Thanks!!

    • Dirk

Swipe from left to right 🙂 in middle of the screen

      • Giovinap

        Thanks I’ll check it out

  • pantsgolem

    Can’t disable shutter sound. Ugh.

Like the swipe-from-right to access the gallery though, especially the “peek” effect for the photo you just took.

    • Simon Belmont

You could actually always do that. Well, at least for the last few versions of Android.

The “peak” is different now, though. It used just be a small thumbnail that slowly marched it’s way off the screen tipping you off to swiping to it.

  • SHMeyer

anyone else having an issue with panoramic and photosphere? Picture is blank.

  • EngineerGunter

    Already having fun with it!

  • Miguel

The whole new camera is awesome, less messy menu, blur feature, pushing you to landscape when recording a video, faster, well done Google.

  • Ben Morris

I like it (nexus 5). The lense blur is really neat. It is so refreshing to get a new feature and be able to download it when it comes out. ….ex verizon customer here

  • ProZomby

Huh, no HDR option on Moto X, but the camera button is semi-transparent.

  • Bigwavedave25

AWESOME! Did’t thing there would be any other options becides the LG Camera hack on my G2 (running a CM11 nightly). Both photosphere and the focal blur work great. And the image sharpness is MUCH than the stock (AOSP/CM) camera app. Do miss widescreen though, but I can app swap! I’m very happy for this 🙂
    Thanks D-L!!!

  • Jacob Dagenais

Got it on my Nexus 7 LTE

  • Kenny Ortiz

APK works on my Note 3. Better then this crappy default camera app…

  • Yep had the update button Just installed. Cool.

  • fritzo2162

    Works great on the M8.

    I busted a rhyme!

  • Disqus_n00b

Why do you have to swipe from the left to access video/photosphere?

  • Rich Robinson

Still waiting for 4.4 on my G2 – thanks Verizon!

  • Emiliano Gomez

Its very smooth ando pretty but the camera button is too big. I just tried it. Also de stock camera icon change.

  • AndrewScottRox

I’m not seeing a HDR mode but one of the apps images shows HDR crossed out. So……is it there or not?

    • Eskimo128

Just tap where HDR is crossed out and it enables HDR.

    • jwildman16

HDR mode is not available on my GNex, either. Google must think our hardware is too limited. What phone do you have?

  • Blair Ginley

I kept trying to install it but it would show that it was downloading and then installing but the button in play store would still say “install”. But when I opened my normal camera app it was the new camera app. So even tho it looks like it didn’t install it really did.

  • Vegeta

If you want 4.4 so bad just install a custom ROM…… People are so helpless, I’m enjoying this app on my Note 3..

    • Matthew Rebmann

I used to be a crack ROM flasher, so I get how it sounds so easy sometimes but it really isn’t to the laymen. You can’t expect customers to have to fix OEM’s problems for them. It’s not fair and not everyone has the knowledge to do so.

      • Vegeta

        This is true

    • Mordecaidrake

I would if I could, but my phone auto updated a few months ago and I can’t root my S4 🙁

  • htowngtr

So it was intended for nexus devices?

    • OhYeah!

Nope, works on my moto x

    • LANCE

any device running 4.4 or higher

  • Scott Hardy

Change to video, hold in portrait…There is a subtle push to turn to landscape. Google fighting Vertical Video Syndrome. Love it!

    • jwildman16

      Yes! Brilliant!

    • JimmyHACK

And it’s always there when not recording to remind people they are an idiot 🙂

    • Miguel

They should make this standard on all phones.

  • I doubt I will like it on my Moto X. The bezzels are crazy compared to the full screen invisible button experience on the Moto X. I definitely am enjoying it on my Nexus 7 though!

  • stelios

    Nexus 4 battery drain

  • BillySuede

how does this compare with the app on the verizon note 3?

  • Shane Redman

I like it…..but……that moto gesture launch

  • Jacob Mustin

This is what i am TALKING ABOUT. sweet features for a nexus. Diggin the lens blur. Digging the interface. Digging the NEW. Not digging the htc esque black bars, but whateves.

  • hyperbeatser

installed on my moto x, i love the fact that you can tap to focus on spots, unlike the moto x’s stock camera. I know the moto x has the drag spot for exposure/focus but i’ve found that it struggles to focus a lot

    • Sean Bello

you can turn the one – touch off on the X and use the volume button instead to take a pic

  • Tony Byatt

DL, please do some N5 and Moto X camera tests post-update if you can…

  • Intellectua1

Installed from the Playstore on my S4 running PAC 4.4, so far I love it. But then again I love anything that’s new. I’m an out with the old in with the new type guy.

  • Ziich

maybe its just me but it does not seem to support immersive mode so its like having double bezels

  • Mark Aaron Collado

  • Corey Marrier

installed on GS3 running an AOKP 4.4.2 nightly and when I try the pano or photosphere both show black in the viewer. Anyone else noticing this on their device?

    • joni630

there are no photosphere and panorama options on my moto g to begin with.

  • Matthew

Sweet! Just installed on my GNex (running CM11).

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

    I love update Wednesdays!

  • Cesar

If only there were a way to get my Moto X to open this with the twist gesture instead of the stock app.

    • sc0rch3d

that f’ing twist gesture…never thought i would use it as much as i do.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

Agreed! After just a few minutes of comparison shots, I feel like the WB and exposure on this app are better than the Motorola stock camera…which makes me sad 🙁

    • tharealoc

Tasker profile launch new camera app when old one opens. It’s not perfect but will give you the effect

      • Mike

Just set this up and it seems to work okay. The stock Moto camera still comes up at first but I guess I can live with it. Thanks for the idea.

    • enemyisyou

I wish that it worked too, but the Moto X camera app is so terrible after you do the twist gesture that I’m glad to have this app instead. I use Cover for my lock screen, so I can get into the camera app pretty fast from that without the twist motion. The fact that I can control where the camera focuses and shoot macro completely sells me on this replacement.

    • BR Screwlack

Is the only way to get this on Moto X to download the APK? Not seeing it in the Play Store

      • mustbepbs

I installed it from the website.

    • jeff manning

Camera icon is flat. I bet the new flat icons are coming with 4.4.3

  • dhirensavalia

Installed fine on my VZW Moto X. However, no HDR mode. But a cool (maybe funny) feature is when you are in video mode, the phone hints to you to turn your phone horizontal.

    • Silver Veloz

Horizontal mode – yes. One of my pet peeve with iPhone users. They always film in vertical/portrait mode.

  • Rocketjrb

    100% viewfinder!

  • Mickmayi

Let’s try this camera out! .. Where’s my cat

  • jbdan

Wow this is REALLY sharp, auto installed on N5. Love it!

  • Sean Plantz

Works fine on my droid maxx.

    • LiterofCola

Is it any better than the stock camera?

      • Sean Plantz

I don’t think so personally, no HDR mode I can see, and the phone won’t launch it automatically when you twist, which I actually use a lot. Tried to use the lens blur and it was a random mess of blurred out nonsense. I’m sure it will improve rapidly but for now I’m not sold. Will sick with the moto cam.

  • duke69111

does this replace the stock app on a nexus device or is it a completely seperate app?

    • jbdan

      Replaced mine

    • charesa39

Yes. I just clicked the play store link on my N5, and it gave options to either open or update like it shows for system apps. After updating, it replaced the stock camera app.

      • imneveral0ne

It probably won’t replace the camera app on your G2.

    • sagisarius

It looks like it replaces the stock camera app on Nexus devices. My N4 says it’s just an update to the camera app.

      • duke69111

Thanks. I was hoping that was the case. My nexus 7 is at home and I can’t try it as my g2 is anti 4.4. 🙂 No need for two apps.

  • James Keleman

Does anyone know how to turn off the shutter sound?

  • Synacks

Installed and working beautifully on my Verizon GS5

    • jnt

Auto-focus seems really slow compared to the stock cam on the S5. But otherwise pretty nice.

      • Synacks

It’s a bit slower, but the interface and simplicity is unbeatable.

  • Mathew Colburn

Pretty impressed with this initially. It’ll take a little getting used to but so far it’s quick and the photos while sitting at my desk are pretty good. Not sure if they’re necessarily better but I like the interface a lot more…. minus that nasty bezel… But I like you can click that entire bezel section to take a pic.

  • jasenm

Significantly better on the Nexus 5. Very fast, images seem “clearer” with less noise, etc. Really dig the new new UI and how it seamlessly integrated with gallery.

    • jbdan

      Definitely noticing these too

  • Matthew

    That button is horrible 😛
But app is better than prev.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

I dont really like the viewfinder

    • Maxim∑

yeah that bezel is way too big

      • Mike

The bezel is transparent. I’m using the camera now and it doesn’t bother picture taking.

Don’t know why they don’t show it on their Google Play images as being that way. The bezel is fine when it’s transparent (Like it is).

        • grumpyfuzz

          It varies per device.

  • Silver Veloz

Just got it on my Nexus 7 (2013). Moto X – not yet.

  • Humberto

    love it

  • Doesnt load for me. FC right when I launch it.

  • Maxim∑

    lol low light warnings everywhere

  • darensdorff

anyone else getting FC when accessing settings? (Swipe right>Click Gear Icon in bottom right corner)

  • Maxim∑

My Nexus 4 just got it automatically!

    • Tony Byatt

I think the second camera is more for those 3D effects that we all love… :-

      • Guy Pierce

I’ve seen it in action recently and it works pretty well!

    • K

Yup. Even LG’s magic focus works just as great.

    • Aooga

Doesn’t work at all for me. HTC One.

      • Aooga

Now it just crashes on startup. Very nice Google.

      • MetroGnome711

I’m on the VZW One (M7) with no troubles. Works fine!

        • MetroGnome711

Now if only i didn’t have that crappy pink/blue stuff in lowlight.

          • Aooga

I trired both on a GPE rom and Sense 6 rom. Both don’t work at all and crash really often. Oh well. Yeah that blue and red stuff is really terrible.

          • MetroGnome711

I’m on Ecliptic One’s Sense 6. Still working great! Tell you what, i’ll trade you the pink/blue issue for the not functioning google camera?! No…? Ah well.

    • JBartcaps

Also try taking a video in portrait, they do their best to make you turn your phone to landscape lol

    • Yuval Rozin

Aren’t you getting weird noises from the camera lens? I just installed it on my Nexus 4, It works completely fine but I get weird physical noises from the camera when it adjusts the focus…

      • moe6

Any chance you’re on a custom kernel and possibly undervolted too?

  • KPunk

SWEET, just received this on my phone checked the site right away for the news!

  • Tony Byatt

    Ok Google, I see you…

  • Carlos Lopez

Lookinf forward to seeing if this makes the shots on the n5 any better

  • The Narrator

Does it take better pics or are they still sh!t?

  • Derek Duncan

downloaded it. am testing how it compares to the s5 camera, quality and everything else.

  • JSo

Just installed it. Has anyone tried the lens blur feature? Wow. I’m impressed with it.

    • jnt

Tried it with a selfie – surprisingly it works really really well. I’m guessing that slight upward gesture helps the software “figure out” where to cut off the blur better.

      • JSo

That and maybe takes a second picture for the focal point like the M8 does with their second camera. It’s smart actually.

        • jnt

Though it does decrease the resolution greatly – 1024×576, and kinda muddy at that in the clear portion of the picture.

          • JSo

Try going into the settings. There is an option for Lens Blur quality. See if that helps.

          • jnt

            Ah, missed that – thanks!

  • jhjr24

Just updated via the link. Super fast launch speed and loving the new UI.

  • Just got it install. Very nice. Really digging the new interface.

  • pdpkong

First Off, Kellex you’re super fast with these articles. Submitted the link not thinking it would be up so soon. Been playing around with this for a couple minutes and love the interface so far aside from that bezel as litobirdy says.

  • KingofPing

Play link worked great for my M8. Nice!

  • joejoe5709

Hopefully this is better than the Nexus/GPE camera software. But this is definitely a step in the right direction so that we don’t have to wait for Android updates for camera fixes. Thank you Google!

  • boardindude

Works great on my Note 3!

  • Krzysztof Bryk

i has it, my last 3 twits twitter.com/krzysztofbryk

  • Dedei Panisio

It works flawlessly on my Moto X

  • NeverEndingXsin
    • jnt

  • RJ

Just DL’d on the N5. Very nice.

  • Shawn Custer

When I opened the link with my Nexus 5, it updated my camera app to this one. Still playing with it, but looks good so far.

  • darensdorff

received a 940 error from the playstore when I pushed the install from the web.

Cant find it when searching on my phone in the Play Store either…

  • kelly

Just installed on my Moto X. 1 word: SEXY

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

but does it look any better?

  • nycebo

Just installed it and it seems to work well. My only grief is that it retained the horrible ‘Gallery’ app. Was hoping it would be removed in favor of Google+ Photos. Of course, I realize that it is there as the backup in the event that users don’t have Google+ installed. But man, it is getting long in the tooth. Back to disabled.

  • Folks, apk please. We can’t install this thing. Show us some love. 😛

  • MichaelFranz

Downloaded and working on Verizon S5. Not to bad so far

  • evan brown

photosphere is much improved, it used to really struggle in mixed lighting situations, working for me on vzw de moto x

    • JBartcaps

      Huge improvement

  • adamcorwin

Installed on my motox w no problems

  • Kelly Buck

Installed this on my Moto X. Works like a champ.

    • Hothfox

Does it replace the Moto X stock camera? I like the wrist flick to launch the camera, and don’t want to lose it.

      • Drooblz

        Nope, just another app.

        • Hothfox

          Thank you.

      • Kelly Buck

Not that I can find yet. I think that’s honestly a feature built into the Moto X camera app. I’m trying to see what I can do to get around it.

        • Hothfox

Yeah, it’s a Moto X feature, I just wanted to make sure this app did not replace the stock Moto X camera app. It does not, it’s just another app.

        • I’d like to figure that out too. This camera being loaded via the wrist flip feature would be sweet.

      • Shawn Gill

Unfortunately it does not replace the moto x camera.

        • Hothfox

For me, that’s a good thing. I like the Moto X camera, but I like this Google Camera too. Yay choices!

  • Johny M

No luck N4 running latest Omnirom. It updates but than it says can not connect to camera. Back to Focal it is.

  • OhYeah!

So anybody that doesn’t have a nexus have it working?

    • Hothfox

It shows that I can install it on my Moto X, but it also says it’s already installed (I don’t know if it thinks it’s installed on my Moto X or my Nexus 7). I don’t want it to replace my Moto X camera, so I’m holding off for now.

  • dannyWHITE

It updated fine for me with my Nexus 5

  • Cool. Having a Galaxy S4 from Verizon means I’ll never get 4.4, therefore I’ll never be able to get it, but still cool.

    • Chris

Blah blah blah… Some old tired story from all Verizon users.

      • James

I tend to agree. I used to be one of “those” Verizon people, and then I switched. A lot of people claim Verizon is their only option due to coverage – and I’m sure that may be true for some – but I doubt many have ever actually explored alternatives.

        • TSY87

It’s not my only option, but in my area, my friends with att/sprint/t-mobile do tend to have worse reception, and actual deadzones in certain areas. If I didn’t have unlimited data on VZW I would be long gone… until then I will suffer.

        • n900mixalot

I’ve been on AT&T and Sprint and T-Mobile. Where I live it is Verizon for consistent coverage and here we have hundreds of miles of desert and highway with nothing inbetween. I would have T-Mobile but they are 2G-only within my entire region (150 mile radius), if that. I have a strong LTE connection just about everywhere even in the desert.

So I don’t mind not having KitKat because what good is the OS if the phone doesn’t work?

          • K

Here in Arizona Verizon is great. I complain about their slow updates but when VZW LTE is in places their competitors can barely pull a signal, it makes the wait somewhat bearable.

        • MatthewSimmons

How do you explore alternatives? Can you take a test drive of another network without signing a contract (serious question)?

The only way I have been able to tell another networks service in my area is to either ask someone I know none of which have T-Mobile or look online at the coverage map with different pink hues so closely matched in colors it’s nearly impossible to tell if it’s 2G or LTE.

          • James

Prepaid is an option, if your phone has multi network capability or you can snag a cheap one to test. All the major carriers have prepaid outfits you can try for a month (fairly cheaply) without a contract. Never trust a coverage map!

        • Ian Woloschin

I had VZW, but switched to Ting (Sprint MVNO) in order to save significant amounts of money. Unfortunately, Sprint’s network is absolute garbage, and this is in Kendall Square, in Cambridge, MA, which is also home to MIT. If your network is garbage at one of the world’s most prestigious technology schools I think you’re doing something wrong.

Of course, the price being what it is, and not having my unlimited VZW plan anymore, and I’m totally willing to deal with crappy coverage. Just hoping for a good integrated VoLTE/VoWifi, which Ting has made a few whispers about rolling out this year.

        • Intellectua1

I switched from Verizon to AT&T because Verizon failed to get the Note 1. I do not miss Verizon, AT&T coverage is great.

        • If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. =)

          • James

Except one could argue paying hundreds of extra dollars a year = broke (in both senses)

        • Mike

Actually I spent all of November and December of last year testing all other options (Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T) and found that the only carrier that gave me actual coverage where I need it most (Work and home) was by far Verizon. Neither T-Mobile or AT&T had any data whatsoever at my work.

Also, I have a Droid Maxx and love the new camera app from Google! Simple UI with a good bit of features.

      • DCABuckeye

Not ALL Verizon users. I even gave you an up for this one because it’s so true from this audience.

    • enemyisyou

If the S3 got it (which it did), then the S4 will as well…it will just be after 1-2 more versions of Android come out.

    • Nowai

      No roms?

  • Prox

just installed this on my Nexus 5, it just overwrote my old camera app/icon.

  • OhYeah!

    APK please!

  • moelsen8

    story of the week!

  • badabundz

cant install it on my s4 with 4.4

  • OhYeah!

Not showing up for Moto X

  • JSo

Finally, a better camera from Google.

  • litobirdy

Looks like LG G2 does not qualify… oh nevermind I see 4.4 is a requirement. Put that in Title of this article

    • mh

why not just read the article. it isn’t very long

  • litobirdy

that capture button bezel WTF, i like the whole screen being what i am going to capture

    • All_I_do_is_post_gifs
    • Yeah, but here’s the thing…image ratios that we like are usually not the same as screen ratios. On my N5, I have (nearly) “full screen” capture…and when I take the picture, the width of the image is what I saw in the “viewfinder”, but the height is different. It adds more to the top and bottom of the image. That’s because 16:9 ratio for pictures isn’t exactly what most of us like. So, I would rather keep the more standard ratio but be able to see everything I’m capturing before I take the picture. Otherwise, it’s hard to compose well. So, I’m fine with the bezel. That’s my personal opinion at least 🙂

      • niuguy

That makes TOTAL sense – but most people won’t care.

    • Bob G

The picture shown on the screen without the giant camera button bezel is still what will show up in the final picture.

Curiously in video mode, the giant button is transparent.

    • Guy Pierce

It’s early and I’m sure it will be fixed and or made transparent so you can see what you are shooting.

    • Nick

      It’s called a 100% viewfinder.

    • Grayson

The Nexus 5 has a standard 4:3 camera sensor. You can’t use an entire 16:9 screen to show and entire 4:3 image. To use the entire screen, it would have to cut off the top and bottom of the preview, which is what it used to do, which was terrible. This is the correct way to do it. On phons with 16:9 sensors, like the Moto X, One M8, and GS5, the viewfinder will take up the whole screen.

      • Firelight

You hit it. On my Moto X the shutter button is transparent and takes a 16:9 photo. It’s a nice app and the images are a touch better than the Moto X camera app. But the twist-to-launch feature is just so very convienent.

  • Anthony Tyson

    Its beautiful. Nice animations too

  • Lou M

Appears to have worked for me. Installed with new icons. Nexus 5. Looks great!

  • Nexus_FrEak

Dat icon doe… Great animations and pretty fast! Cant wait to see what they do with this!

  • Guest

No, it works, you just can’t install it yet

  • James

    Link is down.

    • Nathan Borup

No, it works, you just can’t install it yet. Google hasn’t quite gotten it ready just yet

      • JBartcaps

        I just installed it

        • Nathan Borup
