Paranoid Android Teases Redesigned Halo Notifications, Follows New Kit Kat Design Guidelines

kit kat halo

It has been a while since we have heard anything from the Paranoid Android team who introduced Halo early last year. Their floating notification system was a huge hit in the ROM community, but since then we have had a new version of Android launch. Android 4.4 Kit Kat brought some new design ideas and that means a new Halo for us.

Details are scarce, but Paranoid Android took to its Google+ page this morning to post this teaser image of what we can come to expect, and man does it look good. Halo made a big splash last year by being one of the first floating notification systems to be built into a ROM that offered lots of different uses. By adding the slight transparency that is prevalent throughout Kit Kat, the design of Halo can adapt to whatever you are looking at on your screen.

Paranoid Android promised that there will be more details on the way, you can bet that we will pass those along as soon as we can.

    I really want that background.

  • Nathaniel Webb

    graphic…text…not…vertically…centered…/falls over

    j/k love you guys ;)

  • topherrjames

Does anyone besides me actually hate halo/chat heads? I don’t want something that gets in the way of the app I’m currently using, if I get a notification I’ll see it on the status bar..

    • gkinsella2

It’s an alternative to the notification bar. You can hide the bar, giving you a little more screen real estate, and use halo for your notifications.

    EXCITED!

Can’t wait. Installed PA on my rooted LG G2 and it’s been great!

    • Guy Pierce

Daily driver great? Does it go around the subscription verification for tethering? I’m currently on RC3 of CMD ROM and T-Mo is still recording my tethering.

      • WCM3

It’s definitely stable enough to be a daily driver (i’m on the 12/24 version). The only problem I have is it might reboot once every day or two. Other than that it’s been great. I’m on a verizon G2, don’t think it matters though. I haven’t actually tried tethering with it.

        • Guy Pierce

If you could give it a shot a let me know that would be AWESOME!

  • coolsilver

Too bad they been terrible about their builds and devices. Not all the latest nexus devices have AOSP builds. Which I guess that is their call.

  • 918273645ams

Typo in the title – not that it matters. :P

    • Manthas

Maybe they were pointing out that the banner they used was red? Ya know, “red signed”? Yeah, I got nothin’, lol.

  • Intellectua1

PA 4.0 Beta is very smooth but cant wait until they add the features back into the ROM especially Halo.. When PA is fully up and running then PAC will be back.

  • ahhh yes

anyone know where the wallpaper is?

    • Ryan B
      • ahhh yes

        thanks great site!

        • Ryan B

By that you are refering to http://www.facet.la/ Yes it is. This guy has many more designs like this one and they are all just as amazing.

          • CaptainCaleb

These are beautiful. Thanks for the link!

      • Colton

        Thank you!
and….just curious…. how did you find this? I always wonder if people just randomly have it lol

        • tyguy829

it was in the g+ post

        • Ryan B

Haha yes, I used to think the same thing and now I’m that guy! Well, I am a member of the Google+ community page of Paranoid Android and when they posted the new update there, everyone there also wanted the wallpaper. Someone shared the link there, so you would have to ask him/her, it was probably a member of the PA team that was part of it, knowing how involved they are.

          • Justin W

I saw the post this morning and grabbed the wallpaper then. It’s a sweet ass wallpaper, that’s for sure.

          • Colton

cool cool man, i get on g+ pretty regularly but im not connected with PA. But i may go check it out now! Thanks!

        • Rbq

I was gonna reply but it’s already been posted. I know of this guy (Justin Maller) because he did the artwork for the last Bliss n Eso album (Australian hip hop duo) and immediately recognized it as one of his pieces. He is fantastic, he’s on instagram “justinmaller”
Buy one of his prints if you like his art! I got this framed

          • Colton

very nice, that’s pretty awesome. Will def have to check his stuff out!

      • Maxim∑

Here is the one MKBHD uses

        • Boblank84

nice looking walls thanks @ryan b for the link

    • John

You can find all of them at facet.la

  • jcrouch

Can’t wait for some new PA on my nexus 5

    • Maxim∑

I still cant find a reason to root my Nexus 5..

      • Boblank84

awesome phone and definitely not necessary. my main reason is screen density. i much prefer 440 over stock which i think is 485. That and nav bar height. other than that i could probably resist as well.

      • Morbid138

        Franco Kernel.

        • yankeesusa

What are the advantages of the franco kernel? I’m thinking of getting the n5

      • CaptainHowdy13

I’ve had the same problem. PA might be a good reason, I enjoyed that ROM a lot, but stock android is so good on N5

      • Kofi Williams

Titanium Backup, Greenify, Auto-hide key are some apps that rooting is worth it. Tasker,Xposed, and Gravity Box for super tweakers. I’ve also sped up my GPS and fixed brightness issues through apps that required root. Not necessary but you’re gibbing yourself by ignoring it. As for ROMs PA (and PAC) are IMO the only ROM(s) worth rooting for.

        • Maxim∑

Thanks, I will look into those because I kind of miss rooting my phone

  • T_Dizzle

Do they release it to the market independent of the rom?

    • tyguy829

      nope…built into framework

    • spearman792

No, but they will eventually release the source code so it will definitely make its way into other ROMs and probably the Xposed framework

      • T_Dizzle

        Cool, thanks.

      • Jeff C

I hope it makes its way to Xposed

    • Elliot Kotis

What is the market? Ooohhh, Android Market shut down years ago, mate.

  • Matthew Rebmann

    That’s actually really beautiful looking
