Koush Releases AllCast App To Google Play, Brings Local Video Casting To Many Devices

Android developer Koushik Dutta, of CyanogenMod and ClockWorkMod fame, announced today the arrival of his new AllCast application onto Google Play. Previously in beta, the app allows local media content to be pushed to a wealth of popular devices, like new Xbox consoles, Roku 3, and Apple TV. Google’s Chromecast remains unsupported in the app due to Google’s continuing developer limitations, which have been documented quite publicly since the HDMI dongle’s release this past summer. Koush could only say that he “hopes” Chromecast support will arrive some day.

Here is the full list of currently compatible devices:

  •  Roku
  • Apple TV
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Samsung Smart TVs
  • Panasonic Smart TVs
  • Google TV (Logitech Revue, etc)
  • DLNA Renderers

The app does not require root access and is free on the Play Store, with a $4.99 in-app purchase to unlock the “premium” version, which removes ads along with some casting limitations.

Go grab it!

  • mbagz

I have an ATV and videos play flawlessly from my GS4.

  • Allan

Anyone know the easiest way to get this working with Xbox 360? Works with no hassle on my One but looks like I might need to do some tweaking with the 360…

  • AlexKCMO

Anyone know if this works with XBMC?

Also, Netflix or just local video/pictures?

  • Petro Dragoumanos

This app works well with the XBox One. It’s a shame it isn’t approved for the Chromecast.

  • mercado79

Real Player Cloud will stream local content to Chromecast, no additional fee required. Just make sure that your video is encoded in the Chromecast supported format. I used Handbrake to re-encode some videos to MP4 (video) / AAC (audio). No problems after that. Google “chromecast supported media types” and the first hit will give you more details on supported formats.

Another Koush app to get pulled by Google in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

    • As a PSA everything except the CM Installer app is back on the Play Store now

  • schoat333

Don’t get me wrong, I like what he does for the community, but are you guys going to post about every app he has? There are a lot of developers that deserve a post about their app just as much as Koush does.

    • We can’t keep tabs on every single one. Most everything Koush does publicly is pretty big.

If you see something big from another dev, be sure to tip us and if it’s newsworthy we’ll get it up.

    • JRomeo

No other developer has created an app that is SUCH A BIG DEAL, as AllCast…….. when it gets chromecast support, this will be what thousands have finally been asking for…….

      • chris_johns

sarcasm? bc if you mean this you havent used the app have you…it kinda blows…theres better apps that do a better job for free…but no one wants to make articles about them bc they aint koush

        • JRomeo

Lol. the app does blow sometimes. but if these glitches are fixed, then my original comment won’t be so sarcastic afterall

  • feztheforeigner

Why is the PS4 not supported?

    • Andy Stetson

That falls under DLNA, just like the PS3.

  • meijin3

Was screen mirroring a planned feature for AllCast?

    • No, this is a feature of his Mirror app which is currently in beta. That app currently requires a CyanogenMod installation I believe.

  • EP_2012

Is this just a DLNA player? These press-releases make this app seem like more than that…. and DLNA players have been around the Play Store for a long time…

  • palomosan

I have a Chromecast but it’s still limited, I want to be able to stream whatever I have on my phone or Tablet, this app gives you options if you have any of the equipment listed.

    • EvanTheGamer

Still waiting for an app that mirrors playing games(ANY game, too) on your phone to your Smart TV. That would be awesome. Maybe that day will arrive sooner or later.

      • peter9999

That’s exactly what I’m waiting for. Just mirror
the screen no limitation on local or cloud content or app. There’s many free apps to stream local content to TV. Beam, zippo, airfoil… This is the only thing i miss from the IOS eco. Samsung all cast dungle looks very promising but yet another piece of hardware.

    • Snowbo13

use avia it got approved 2 weeks ago for chromecast

  • Eric Lamont

How does it work with AppleTV? Do you need to have jail broken the ATV??

    • palomosan

Eric, the article clearly says rooted not need it.

      • mog386

Yes, or you can clearly read his question and not jump to conclusions. He’s asking if you need to have the AppleTV Jailbroken in order for the app to work with it.
What he is not asking, is if you need to have a Rooted Android Device to have the app work with the AppleTV.

        • Chris Hughes

          oh snap!

    • No, it does not look like it requires Apple TV devices to be jailbroken.

Koush worked some magic, I guess, to get it working there. I think he may have spoofed it into thinking AllCast is a regular AirPlay stream (through iOS or Mac devices).

      • Nathaniel Webb

MY guess is he simple wiresharked the ATV and spoofed or reproduced it’s protocol.

        • d-rock

Which means an ATV update could break it.

    • panicswhenubered

Can confirm, it works perfectly streaming videos to my ATV from a G2.

  • Dre Fay

i have G-TV and it’s been so limited so far. This is awesome news!!!! Thanks Rithvik

  • JSo

Avia can play local media to Chromecast. So why can’t AllCast?

    • Adrynalyne

I am guessing because Avia was approved. With all the crap Koush was complaining about Google when they blocked his chromecast exploit, they probably aren’t interested in dealing with him. Why he took it to Google+ instead of discussing it with Google like an adult is beyond me. Could have been AllCast there instead of Avia.

      • Jordan Webb

Because Koush is a drama queen that loves to play the “oppressed little dev” at the same time he tries to use his name to get special treatment.

        • Adrynalyne

Which works I guess, but when you piss off the big guys, you will eventually will lose out.

      • michael arazan

I thought the whole problem was, Chrome withe chromecast is proprietary and closed for Google only unlike android which is open source. So exposing an exploit made google fix the exploit. It seems had Koush just reported the exploit instead of building off it and get official support for his app following guidelines, everything would be copasetic. That’s how I understood it, but I’m not a dev.

BTW with xbox support, can you stream your phone’s content, like videos & pics, apps, browsers and such to your xbox then to your TV?

        • Adrynalyne

          Not sure re: your question.

You might be right, it could be because he used the exploit instead of reporting it. Either way, he knew full well it wasn’t allowed, and he decided to buck the system anyway. He definitely has a napoleon complex.

    • Not That Drunk

Because Avia is officially supported by Google and this app is not. That’s really the only reason.

      • JSo

To my understanding, it was because his app wasnt following the rules and using a work around to make it work. I would think all he has to do is re-write the app according to Google’s rules. Unless Google just really doesnt like him.

        • Not That Drunk

I’d assume so too, but who knows. With how few ‘approved’ apps there actually are, I have no clue what the certification process actually entails.

  • I have none of these devices. I do have a chromecast…

    • James Briano

I have none of these devices. I do have a chromecast and a Nexus Q.

    • niuguy

I have five of these devices and still wish it worked on Chromecast. haha

    • Ethan Besbris

Use Avia and stream from your phone to Chromecast!

      • Snowbo13

I use Avia and stream seamlessly to my Chromecast also and its cheaper at $3. Why is the premium $5 for this app. I have been testing it since the beginning but don’t really want to fork out $5 for it.

        • so avia is better than plex and realplayer?

          • Snowbo13

I personal think for what I use it for yes!

          • bitpimpin

I wonder this too… How nice would an in depth comparison of the three apps be? **hint hint droid life staff**

        • coggy9

Using a detimebombed beta of AllCast, Avia is a waste of $3 if you only want video. AllCast seems to support more formats.

          • Snowbo13

Anything as long as you are jot trying to use a chromecast. I have used almost all the betas of allcast and still have issues of it stopping playing acationaly on my lg TV.worst thing was that of I lost it you had to start again from the beginning because it would not let you fast forward. Yes I like all cast and koush but until it works with chromecast again I will be using avia. Has not let me down yet. No studdering. It was not able to play a avi. Last night bit whatever
