verizon galaxy note 2

Owners of the Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon, prepare yourselves for an Android 4.3 update. According to a number of readers, the update is now available through Verizon’s computer-based Upgrade Assistant as build VRUEMJ9. It will undoubtedly be available over-the-air at some point, but this is your option for now.

We are still awaiting official details and will update this post as we have them.

Update:  The details are now in. We have everything you need to know below.

Update 2:  The OTA update is now live as well for many.

As you can tell thanks to the support documents from Verizon, this is not only the 4.3 update but also the update that brings Galaxy Gear support. To find out all there is to know about the Galaxy Gear, dive through the first two pages below and then hit up our review.

Outside of 4.3 and Gear support, this update also introduces a number of items from the Galaxy Note 3 and other new features. PenUp and Multi-Window are now the Note 3 versions, Sound & Shot has been added to the camera, Bluetooth LE has been enhanced, and apps can be moved to the SD card.

Broke my phone!!!! Super slow! and keeps freezing! I can’t back up anything either… the PC doesn’t seem to recognize it anymore either :<

  • Stephanie Gerona

Has anyone had an issue with note 2 getting good stuck on a restart after update? Seems every time my phone turns off and i turn it back on, or restart it… It gets stuck on restart and takes me forever to get it back to normal :-(

  • Paxton

Okay so I have a note 2 but AT&T… Have only one problem with the update… When my phone is locked my lock screen constantly ‘wakes up’ when there isn’t even a notification. It is VERY annoying and I NEED to know how to fix it please!?

  • rutgersjaffo

I just wanted to complain about this update again. THANKS FOR NOTHING, VERIZON!!! You screwed up the best phone I ever owned. Ever since this garbage update (which, for the record, introduced a bunch of jack ass changes nobody asked for AND stuffed EVEN MORE bloatware GARBAGE on my phone) my phone won’t synch to my in-car bluetooth without me turning off the BT on my phone manually and then turning it back on (Wow! How wonderfully convenient is that?!), it doesn’t stay hooked to my Jawbone all the time, and it EATS BATTERY LIKE IT WAS ITS JOB. F!!! U!!!! VERIZON!!! Oh, and did I mention that the folks at ALL of the VZ stores in my area have been ABSOLUTELY USELESS and pretty much tell me to go online and contact tech support?! AAAAHHHH!!!!!

  • Bob Stephens

Has anyone figured out how to get the one handed tiny screen to work on the note2?

  • jaffo

Oh my God does this update eat battery. I can pretty much watch the incentive go down right in front of my eyes. What the hell?!

    • jaffo

      Percentage, that is.

  • Dave

Holy Cow….can I have my 4.1.2 back? Not liking how it’s changed this phone now.

  • jj

Will I lose my installed apps when I update my note 2 to 4.3 jelly bean?

    • V

Nope, it will optimize all your apps after the update.

  • rutgersjaffo

This new lock screen is ass. And I did not ask for a consolidated email inbox either. Will have to see how the rest of this shakes out.

  • Cynder2012

heh…my dad just updated his Note 2…..and the update killed his 64 gb mSD card….our computers wont even find it to read it with an adapter…my nook HD+ wont find it either…and it was ONLY after this update.

  • spokanetrav

That’s on the note 2, sorry I didn’t specify. And no air view either. Thought it was supposed to get that as well.

  • spokanetrav

Since the update I pulled yesterday my text notification will only vibrate, no sound no matter how I adjust volumes. Anybody else having this issue?

  • rafael

I updated my note 2, but i don’t see Knox security!

  • Tony

I don’t like the new Verizon boot image! 4.1.2 boot animation much cooler

  • DRAF_Werd

Can anyone definitively confirm that Foxfi still works after the update for Verizon Note 2? Seen mixed reports online. I have the paid version and am not rooted.

    • clownsauce

It absolutely does not work after the update. Don’t update its not worth losing foxfi

  • Futilizer

Anyone use the “move app to SD card”? It makes the apps unusable for me.

  • John Scott

After the update the phone has been very slow with bad lag……anyone else?

    • dostie1

Was very laggy the moment I started up after the update and my charger seems to be taking FOREVER to charge my phone as well. As in if I charge my phone while it’s on with wifi it STILL discharges. I used to be able to use the phone and be plugged in and still get a charge all the time. I’m waiting to see if there are anyone else having the same issues this morning.

    • Mojorizen

Multiple times. Trying to type anything is almost impossible in Swype. Hit first letter and start swyping. By the time you realize nothing is “swyping” you are almost into the next word. Go back and touch the screen and no response, tap harder and still no response. Try another letter and by golly it works. Try again with first word and nothing happens. Tap harder and holy hell it worked this time. Rinse and repeat over and over and over and over and over again. Didn’t matter how many restarts or full power offs happened, the issue always reappears. Finally figured out that a full battery pull for a minute and then reboot does the trick.

Till it came back. Ran my battery down to 2% and from ten percent on down the screen just got glitchier and glitchier before I pulled the battery again. Must be an every 3 day glitch now. Thanks Sammy or even Big Red for this one. Could be extra special bloa from the Devil incarnate themselves.

And that doesn’t include the screen unresponsiveness you get or apps not registering touch input either.

Hopefully we get an update sooner than later to address this issue.

    • B. Johnston

Same.. been like this since the update. I just tossed my note II across my living room.

    • http://culturemass.com/tech-science Nate Humphries

Yup, same here. Mine hasn’t been as bad as the Skype issue mentioned above, but it’s a noticeable difference from the 4.1.2 firmware.
Any luck finding a solution? Or will we have to wait until the 4.4 update in April?

  • javier

Just got the 4.3 update and it looks amazing!

  • RobTheIcon

Does anyone know if you can get the update without a sim card? Thanks.

  • Walt

    Downloading!

  • Bretton Key

OTA works, waiting to see if this breaks my root.
Seems like Verizon delayed it because they added an extra 100MB+ worth of bloat.
    BOGUS!

Once I get some things rolling, I hope this will be everything hyped to be, if not I’ll be most likely make the full transition to Omni ROM.

    • Adrynalyne

Verizon doesn’t add anything, Samsung does under Verizon’s orders.

      • FknTwizted

yeah its like Hitler and the SS.

  • FknTwizted

Thanks Verizon for putting your name in another spot on my note 2! (Lock Screen)

  • Noure

Galaxy Note 2 is one of the best phone today, I like it so much for all whom love the Galaxy Note 2 I have found some information here http://new-phones-coming-out.net/ about the Note 2 :)

    • Dominick_7

      Heard it works via bluetooth.

  • Steven Cedre

I love my Note 2…that being said I love the FoxFi app. Sad day today. The OTA 4.3 disabled FoxFi for me today. I power all my other electronics off of this. This is just a heads up. If anyone has a fix for this…I would love to hear it.

  • eragon360

anyone else getting a code 402 error? Failed Update

    • Ira Crain

Yep. Twice now. Anybody know what this is about??

    • Ira Crain

I’m still not having ANY luck. Anybody else having this 402 error when trying the OTA update??

  • coffeechip

It’s downloading now. Hopefully DL is correct and I can start filling up my SD card instead of uninstalling apps.

  • FreyGrimrod

Read DL this morning… when is the Note 2 ever going to get some love? Pickup phone “update is ready to install” dafuq? come back to this… yay

  • Anthony

Now the wait begins for debs to update the hotspot apps. 4.3 broke it. :(

    • Anthony

      Devs*

  • y0_momma

    Does the OTA have KNOX?

  • flosserelli

Glad to see the Note 2 finally getting some 4.3 love from Verizon. But I’ll keep my bloat-free SlimKat 4.4.

  • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Yay! Wifi toggle is now available as a “tile” in the notification bar. Before updating, I either needed a widget on my homescreen or had to head in to the wifi settings to get this.

    • Big_EZ

Did they remove the pestering ongoing wifi notification?

  • Cubanito1967

One thing I notice right off the bat is that I don’t see that constant Wifi in my notifications!

  • Heretic

    Dat home button doe.

    • Adrynalyne

You mean the OTA didn’t remove the branding of the home button?

      Lame.

    • Respen

Everybody that actually bought the phone got over it in a week. Drop it.

  • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Just noticed that they stuck the Amazon App Store on by default — I used to be a fan but removed it a few months back due to battery drain and performance issues. Bummed to see it included now in the standard, bloatware filled build.

    • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Fortunately, I can elect to turn it off in the settings. Whew.

  • Prince Campbell III

I’m getting it done as I type

  • grimmsie

Just checked mine it is coming OTA :D

  • adam t

Just fyi I’m getting this ota right now

  • Trevor M

I’m downloading OTA right now. They must be moving fast!

  • DRAF_Werd

Better late than never, but never late is better #Drake

  • Sam

showing some kind of support is better than none! Downloading

  • Adrynalyne

What is this assistant? Verizon rebranded Kies?

    • hfoster52

      Kinda but gimped.

      • Adrynalyne

I noticed from screenshots. I also see OS X users are SOL for this. Dicks!

Guess I gotta pull out the laptop…

        • hfoster52

          Parallel’s work?

          • Adrynalyne

Technically, but I don’t know if I trust to flash a phone via a VM.

I have to wait until tonight, so I might risk that. Its the wife’s phone so…. :p

  • Cubanito1967

Downloading now! All I can say is about damn time.

  • Kevin

I am currently downloading OTA. Said there was an update available when I checked in Settings.

  • J Davis

Easily one of the best phones that I have ever owned..

    • bassman418

Me too. Until I got my Note 3. ;)
Loved the Note 2 , love the Note 3 even more. They definitely did a good job with a few (and I mean really not big issues, more like personal quirks) things I had with the 2.

      • J Davis

I reeeaaallllyy wanted to get the Note III but I dropped hard earned off contract money for the Note II. I am Verizon unlimited so that’s my only option if I want to keep my unlimited. I am interested in the GS5 and if its half of what they say it will be I will sell the Note II to help subsidize the GS5

        • bassman418

I timed it right where I got $143 for my Note 2 from Verizon and had the $90 promo code. So I only paid like $70 on the 10th when it was released. ;)
I usually hold on to my old phones (still have Gnex, T Bolt, Cincinnati near new condition. ) but couldn’t swing it so I traded in.

          • Big_EZ

Back when the Note 3 first dropped the Note 2 was still selling for over $400 on swappa, Craigslist, etc. That would’ve paid for the Note 3, and put extra money in your pocket.

      • Adrynalyne

I liked my Note 2 better.

        https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L43O8i8ejR4/UrR9EKmG2KI/AAAAAAAAD0g/Tge1p3Lwafs/w462-h821-no/2013-12-19.png

Screen was so little usage, it wasn’t even on the list! Not sure where task manager came from..I wasn’t closing tasks.

I turned off location services today…seems to have alleviated the problem some.

        • crazed_z06

I think Google Services running wild is a Google problem.. I’ve seen the same issue across a number of phones lately. It seems to have gotten better with the last Google Search update though.

          • Adrynalyne

I’m not blaming the Note 3–I just never had this issue with the Note 2.

I’ve been dealing with this ever since I got it. Not sure if it is because 4.3 exacerbates the issue, or what.

This happened yesterday, it idled itself to death.

            With latest search too.

          • https://twitter.com/#!/MMcCraryNJ Michael McCrary

I really think it has something to do with signal strength and how often or hard a device is trying to acquire a mobile network.

Like you said, this is an issue on almost every phone. I did a lot of research before I bought my Note 3 to replace my Galaxy Nexus and sure enough, people were stating this was happening. But I also looked at the G2 and the Moto X and the Nexus 5, and battery drain caused by either ‘Google Services’ or ‘Android OS’ is a common complaint. I think it might have something to do with Location Services in combination with being in a weak or no signal area, as Google might be continuously trying to get location data.

I have my Location Services on and Google Services running, and I’m in a great service area with AT&T, and I have no battery drain issues.

          • Adrynalyne

I turned off location services today. I am still at 94%, whereas yesterday I was at 30%.

          • JAllegs3918

Verizon is on a roll. Is life as we know it ending?

          • Adrynalyne

            On a roll with what?

The lateness of this update vs everyone else is par for the course.

        • zepfloyd

Not sure what this is supposed to show, 10:45? I get almost double that on my Note 3 on average.

          • Adrynalyne

            Missed the point, you did.

THAT WAS A NOTE 3 SCREENSHOT. Maybe..expand the comment and read what is under the screenshot?

It certainly wasn’t posted to brag on battery life; that is sh*t for any device.

          • zepfloyd

Ok? I figured as much. Saying an older version is better because something unique to you is off about the newer one is a bit illogical.
Clearly your phone is either not deep sleeping, or an app is polling Google Services. BetterBatteryStats should help you sort it out. Even easier a factory reset can be in order first to see if pure stock it does the same thing. The same issue does happen on other devices but there’s almost always an underlying reason.

          • Adrynalyne

You know, you could save yourself some time with posting by reading pre-existing comments about this…

          • zepfloyd

Right cause I haven’t? Offering advice doesn’t need your snark. Obviously if you’re so versed on it, you would have solved it or swapped your device since it’s been happening for so long. Either way, sounds like you’d rather just complain.

          • Adrynalyne

Let me know when you start offering advice.

          • zepfloyd
          • Adrynalyne

            Sorry, what advice is this?

All you did was try to hide the fact that you didn’t read the posts prior, including the exchange between me and crazed_z06. You have said nothing helpful, other than to make it clear that your discussion is more about you trying to cover up getting caught not reading beforehand.

          • TripleIonia

Will you guys STFU and GTFOH.

          • Adrynalyne

Classy addition to an already stupid conversation.

        • Big_EZ

Wow, I wish my Note 2’s battery life was that good. This is from this morning with brightness all the way down

          • Adrynalyne

Again, that wasn’t a screenshot of the Note 2.

          • Big_EZ

I know that, but that is much better than I get on my Note 2.

          • Adrynalyne

Notice that mine has absolutely no screen time though?

My Note 2 never had this issue, and still doesn’t. It lasts, and lasts, and lasts.

Before some dingbat comments, YES, I AM AWARE IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE.

          • Big_EZ

I think it may be a software issue, buzzinga. I get horrible battery life because I use it constantly and now it’s worse because I’m running stock firmware again (casual breaks my drivers and won’t work, but my drivers work just fine for adb, and the root program I used) since I got a replacement device.

          • Liquidretro

I have had some issues with my screen not going fully to sleep. Reboot helps usually.

          • Big_EZ

That was after a fresh charge and reboot, but the screen was on the whole time so it wasn’t supposed to sleep anyway. But if you do the math that would only get me about 4:45 of screen time (and total time running) or less if I started using a resource hogging app.

          • Dave

My GN2 easily gets 24-36 hours including 6-8 of screen time per full charge. Over 48 hours if I’m busy and don’t have time to dink with the phone much. My favorite device as well.

          • Kellie Marie Lawrence

Just a suggestion for your Note 2 battery life,… I have had mine for a few months & my daughter just got the note 3 and I do have to say that the note 3 has an AMAZINGLY AWESOME battery life AND it charges to full status in less than 20 mins! Very impressive! But, this is about the note 2, so I can tell you that I use “Advanced task killer PRO” & I have used it on every phone I have for a long time. I kill my apps a couple times a day as it takes only 2 seconds & I also restart my phone every 2-3 days just to give it a refresher . the other thing I never go without is my virus/spyware: Webroot Secure Anywhere Mobile & it does all its own work w/out me having to pay any attention to it; I also use the same one for my 3 laptops & PC w/ them all connected via one account, it’s fantastic! … My battery life on my Note 2 lasts at least 24-30 hours w/ frequent Internet use & texting as well as average calls. I like my screen on full brightness & enjoy maximum use of key visual features. I would recommend getting the task killer I mentioned as well as the anti-virus and hopefully you’ll see a major improvement in your phones battery & overall function. Lastly, I am strictly an amateur when it comes to this stuff but I do my homework and when something works & works well I like to spread the word to help others if I can as we all are more dependent on our phones in this day and age than we were w/ landlines & payphones back in the day! Lol. Best of luck!

        • landon

Try wiping the cache and data that usually works for me

          • Adrynalyne

I’m sure wiping data so nothing is installed works for a lot of things ;)

Nothing actively runs from /cache though, so that isn’t going to do much.

          • landon

I was talking about the app not the whole phone ;)

        • Scott Niemczyk

I agree with you, my note 2 had much better battery life. I even message Samsung about it, but that was when the Verizon note 3 update was coming and they gave it to me acting like they sent me a update to fix my problem. Nothing changed though. I still love the note 3’s design over the note 2 just wish battery life was better.

          • Adrynalyne

Could be cured somewhere down the line. Part of it is the radio not responding well to poor signal areas.

In the above screenshot, location services seems to have gone insane.

          • Dave

So would you recommend not updating if items in the change log don’t really seem like issues to me or things I’d benefit from?

        • http://www.ashevilletechnologyservices.com Dan Brown

I think the Note2 was better also.

    • Big_EZ

I thought that in the beginning, but Samsung’s bs UI has me hating this phone now. I love the size, and microSD slot, but they have ruined Android with their skin. The only feature I like that they added is multi window. I’m now trying to decide between the Droid Maxx and Note 3. The Maxx has everything I want (screen is as small as I’ll go after using the Note 2) except for microSD slot or more internal storage, which is a huge deal to me. The Note 3 has the microSD slot and a bigger, better screen, but can’t be unlocked (not spending $700+ on DE) and has Samsung’s horrible UI (that’s even worse on 4.3).

  • DasBoots

    Downloading right now!

  • MicroNix

Verizon is on a roll. Is life as we know it ending?

    • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

You’re joking right? How long did 4.3 come out?

      • Roberto Taylor

End of July. Only took Samsung/VZW 5 months…lol

  • Liquidretro

Improvements look good, but I also wonder what this breaks.

  • Rechie

Finally! Now to wait for the rooted.

  • Roberto Taylor

    Downloading now!

    • Roberto Taylor

Download complete. Upgrading now! (hopefully nothing breaks)

      • Roberto Taylor

New boot animation with a big Verizon wallpaper on it. :(

        • StockGS3er

This was the same as the GS3. I was highly disappointed with that part of the update.

          • Sam

better than that seizure inducing 4GLTE flashing loader

      • Cubanito1967

I am at 40% mine is just coming as a OTA. After download do you then have to use that Verizon Software Upgrade thinga ma jig?

        • Roberto Taylor

No, if you’re downloading the OTA it should install automatically on your phone.

          • Cubanito1967

Thanks. It is installing now. Looking forward to that new boot animation! And it just now finished as I was typing reply cue boot animation in 1 2 3!!!

  • Michael

just waiting for Sky Note to be based off of this and then I’m satisfied.
