Gmail for Android Updated to v4.7 – Includes Vacation Responder, Sending Attachments of Any Type, and More

Gmail received a really nice update this morning to version 4.7. In the update, the Gmail team has introduced Vacation Responder, as your way to set an “out of office” through the Gmail app, rather than the web. They also are finally allowing you to attach more than just photos and videos. With 4.7 onward, you can attach almost anything from PDF files to .zips to documents to .apks (as long as they aren’t over 25MB). And last, you can print hard copies of emails thanks to built-in print settings (as long as you are on Kit Kat). Oh, you should see performance improvements on devices with low memory, thanks to Project Svelte.

As always, we have the .apk available for you to download below should you not have received the update through Google’s stage rollouts method.

Android 4.4.2 update is also available now to download, camera update was awesome in the previous OTA update. There are some picture comparison on this site http://tech-diggers.com/2013/12/13/nexus-5-quickly-updated-to-android-4-4-2-kitkat-ota-files-available-now/

I am waiting for Gmail 4.7 to actually show up as an update.

Can anyone confirm if the default Gmail widget is 3×2 with the slightly older version of Gmail as I believe it changed to 3×3 and now I cannot have the Gmail AND Exchange email widgets on the same screen since both seem to now be 3×3 when one of them used to be 3×2?

  • billybobd

can you create more than one gmail email account?

  • DJ SPY

I’ve been sending APKs through gmail for years now.

  • Andy Stetson

Lets only hope this can be decompiled/compiled unlike 4.6.

  • LexLuthor

Yet still no way to turn off conversation mode though? 🙁

  • Tyler Rynberg

Wow, Google, you’re almost caught up with K-9 now after only 4+ years…

  • Tim

Still no ability to use HTML signatures. I’ve been able to do this from my iPad for over a year now. The Gmail app on my iPad allows me to either use a text signature or the signature I have stored in the web version of my Gmail account. I need this for my Google Apps email account.

AND?.. STILL NO WAY TO CREATE NEW FOLDERS!!!!????? All I really want is the ability to create new folders… I mean come on….

  • wickets

Im another that doesn’t get the pdf thing….ive used gmail to send pdf files for at least 6 months

  • Jon Kruse

When is @gmail going to make it so you can change your Android/iOS Gmail app signature from a normal web browser? That’s what I really want to do.

  • Ray Gray

I didnt realize i coldnt send pdf files from gmail until last week i had to go home to send a email

  • Tim242

I’ve been sending all files by Gmail on Android for years.

  • Rick

But the app still can’t read .ics files. How is a “vacation responder” better than that basic, email attachment action/functionality?

  • Rick

But the app still can’t recognize .ics file attachments, unlike their web app.

Kit Kat printing* If you own an HP printer…

    • Aridzona

I’ve got it to work with Toshiba and Canon, the only two I’ve tried.

      • Robert Macri

Did toshiba and canon release plugins? or are you using google cloud?

        • Andy Stetson

I use cloud print for my Brother and HP (which doesn’t have e-print). No plugins required.

    • Pedro

I just printed an email to my Brother MFC.
Of course, I set it up as a Cloud Printer last year.

  • John Clausen

I’m still waiting for the “Delete All” option.

    • Intellectua1

      And a select all option

      • michael arazan

I find myself using the pc version a lot more just because of the select all functions to empty the trash and promotions folders, instead of swiping 50 times in a row

        • Both the trash and spam folders do have the ‘Empty’ option in the menu. Though it’s not there for any other folders.

  • ScooberJake

I currently attach PDFs all the time. The menu is stupid, and only lists music and pictures, but if you select picture it works fine. How is this different? Just a change to the menu?

    • tlingitsoldier

I’ve found that even though you can attach another file this way, some files appear to be hidden, since they are not the intended type. It’s happened to me plenty of times where it wouldn’t let me send certain things without having to jump through a bunch of hoops.

      • Tim242

All you had to do was go to the file in a file manager, share to Gmail.

    • Robert Macri

Zips wouldn’t download prior… now they will.
