Motorola Hosting Cyber Monday Deal, Grab an Off Contract Moto X for Just $349

moto x yellow

If shopping online is more of your thing rather than standing in lines on Black Friday, Motorola announced that they will host a special Cyber Monday deal for those who look to pick up the company’s 2013 flagship device, the Moto X

Motorola is selling all Moto X phones for $150 off, bringing the grand total to $349 for a 16GB model or $399 for 32GB. The deal includes Moto X devices bought off of MotoMaker, as well as Developer Edition units.

$349 for the Moto X is an absolute steal – we just wish the wood backs were ready by then. Picking one up?

    Decisions, decisions…

Current VZW GNex owner here, grandfathered in to unlimited data, contract up on 12/15… I could either:

    1) Buy the Moto X Developer Edition on Monday, stay with VZW, keep unlimited data, month to month, no contract. (up front cost $400)

    2) G2 on ATT, running PA kit kat 4.4 ROM, 6GB per month, no unlimited, 2 yr contract (up front cost $99)

    3) Nexus 5 on ATT, 6GB per month, no unlimited, month to month, no contract (up front cost $400)

    First world problems.

  • Mentaltofu

Dumb question: these phones are off contract, but are they still tied to the carrier you select when you build them? I.e. Can I get a gsm variant and switchboards t-mobile to att just by swapping sims? Are these actually unlocked?

    • bd1212

You can use the T-Mobile one with AT&T, and vice versa. The only exception is with Verizon. Their variant can only be used on Verizon, no other carrier.

      • mentaltofu

        Thanks for the reply!

  • Deva

Wish I would be in USA for this deal.. sad I am from INDIA :(
Enjoy Guys purchase Moto X on Monday

  • Such

Anyone on Verizon get the DE for sure! Trust me its 100% worth it. It takes like 30 seconds to flash recovery & root.. It almost feels like there should be more steps but it’s really that easy.

    • JoshGroff

It is basically a nexus, I’m assuming just fastboot OEM unlock and flash recovery + su zip? Was like that with the Xoom as well. I’ve been itching to give Motorola my money, and this sale looks like the perfect time. (GSM dev unlocked for me though)

  • CensoredByU

Now Moto is coming out to play . This is a hell of a move.

  • Daniel J. Peters

I’m on unlimited data, VZW. Will I need root acces on a moto x to run a tethering app? (Obviously, I don’t want to pay for tethering). This is there only reason I would buy the Dev. Edition. Gonna be sad to last my Gnex to rest…

    • M3D1T8R

When I tested it a while back FixFi did work on the Moto x. I think it still does. Hope so, as this is essential for me. But if I decide to get one I will probably get the Dev Edition just in case I need the option in the future.

  • Mooses

Does PDANet+’s Foxfi wifi tethering work with 4.4 on the Moto X? I have to use my unlimited for internet quite often and I need to be able to wifi hotspot my phone.

    • M3D1T8R

Worked before, not sure if 4.4 broke it, doubt it.

  • mlawlor777

so i just bought one a few days ago and its sitting at my house. does that mean i have to return it and then re buy it? or do you think that i will be able to get $150 back on my purchase? i knew i should have waited too.

  • chris125

moto is going to be losing a lot of money with all these returns of phones recently bought to get this deal.

  • Justin Payne

Damn you Motorola! I just received my VZW Dev edition this afternoon, now see this :-(

  • Kyle

Getting up at midnight to be 1000% sure i get one!!!!

  • Justin W

I feel bad for buying a Moto X last week… Just got it today, and now I’m contemplating returning it for this deal…

    • Droid4life

      I’m in same exact position.

    • jess

Nothing to contemplate. Buy on monday, if it goes well, return.

  • BlackMaGiC1o0

Lmaoo I swear its like droid life brings more bad news about ppl who pulled the trigger on the Moto X when moto maker went live on the 11th. BLASPHEMY!!!

  • Sina

I was banking on the wood backs coming out by Friday, if not, was gonna order anyway. Now im going to have to wait till Monday. The phone gods are on my side wood backs or not.

  • Hans Dirk Kwazneski

Should I keep my LG G2, orrrrr get this….

  • Brendan Small

Wish I didn’t jump on the VZW 50$ off Moto X. Lost my unlimited data. I couldn’t take Gnex anymore and now I am loading my revolver and writing a will.

    • IDunnoMyName

You have 14 days to switch back and I believe that deal started on 11/14, so you should have at least one more day to get an RMA.

  • Scott Capodice

Would this be much of an upgrade to my S3? I mean, I follow this, but I’m looking for personal thoughts of people that have had both…comparisons of battery life and such?

    • BlackMaGiC1o0

The Moto X battery life is superb go look at MKBHD review on it. Pretty much sold me on it and I am VERY happy i went with it. It’s snappy hasnt slowed down me yet and I never have to worry about battery life compared to my GNEX. So far I’ve gotten about 4 hr 30mins of onscreen time and still had about 18% battery life left on before i charged it.

    • hkklife

Better camera on the S3. S3 has microSD slot for additional storage. S3 screen is a tad larger *and* has more viewable space due to the hard & capacitive buttons.
S3 has a user-replaceable battery, which is nice. S3 probably has more available aftermarket accessories than any non-Apple phone on the market.

X has a 32GB internal storage option (32GB S3s are rare and discontinued) as well as MotoMaker. X has leagues better build quality, formfactor, UI, battery life and reception.

X is a much newer handset and it’s from Moto, so it will probably keep getting updated long after the S3 is EOL’d (assuming Motorola stays in business). Plus, no bloatware on X. I would definitely go from a 16GB S3 to a 32GB X. From 16GB to 16GB…probably not based on my usage (lots of locally stored media & camera usage) but if you can comfortably live in the cloud and are on a grandfathered unlimited plan, then it’s a no brainer.

      • Scott Capodice

Yeah, that’s my thing. My S3 is 16GB and I’m just kind of over the dang thing. It’s not bad and it’s still snappy and all I gotta run nova to cover up crap wiz. I do like some of the features on the X. I have grandfathered unlimited so I gotta buy outta contract to keep that anyhow. And I want to be able to leave verizon at any time if I want. I have been saying if I could find a X at less than 400 I’d be interested. Here it is…brand new…customized for me if I want even…do I bite. I’m also wondering what moto x 2 would look like, but that might be another 6-8 months away. I’m just trying to figure out if the couple of new features is worth the price. I’m also getting horrible battery life on my s3 cuz I dont have great reception at work so its always searching for signal. I’m just worried I’ll spend 350-400 bucks and be in basically the same situation I’m in now….tethered to a cable often..

        • M3D1T8R

Reception is somewhat better on the moto x. Don’t know if it will be enough better to solve your situation. Battery will be better somewhat. Screen about the same or a little better on x. X will definitely be faster and smoother running, assuming you’re Samsung stock. (Edit: I see you are not.) More ram in the x, faster gpu and cpu. Feel of the moto x is much better. Feels smaller and better in hand though screen size is actually about the same. You’ll be giving up the micro SD slot, if that’s a big issue for you. Probably the biggest issue for me and why I finally sold my s3 was Samsung’s god awful buttons. Terrible physical home button and backwards other buttons, no recent apps button. And you’ll have 4.4 right away and probably fairly quick updates in future. And the Motorola features like Active Notifications.

To sum up, the moto x will definitely be an upgrade. Enough of one, up to you to decide. But this is a heck of a deal, if I were still in your situation (I went to a G.Nexus for a short while then my current DNA earlier this year), I would definitely jump on this. Even if a moto x 2 comes out in 6-8 months, it won’t likely be down to $400 until maybe next Black Friday, a year from now.

I’m in the same boat but now seriously considering this deal to upgrade from my DNA, which won’t be nearly as big an upgrade as from the S3. I miss the 96gb I had in my s3s3 (32 internal plus 64sd)… 32 is nowhere close but a lot better than 16. That and better battery is leaning me toward getting the Dev Edition, but not sure.

Please let me know what you ended up deciding, and come back to write about your comparison after if you do get it, especially reception. Check the -dBm signal strength on your s3, then after you get the moto x and let me know! Good luck.

          • Scott Capodice

I am running nova on the s3. That does give me a soft touch multi task button. But boy do I love that thing when on my N7! I think I am going to try to score this with the 32gb since I have the 16gb s3 with a 16 gb card. The last moto phone I had was the bionic so I’m apprehensive about the phone. But after months on months of great reviews.. I don’t think I’ll regret it. .Thanks for the response!

      • Scott Capodice

OH yeah and about the camera…i can never get good pics if anything is slightly moving with the s3. I dont think the moto x camera could be worse. And as far as the screen…I really hate the hard button…too apple-ish for me..

  • Ry Sav

Why don’t I have an extra $399 lying around!!!! Need to get rid of my Gnex, but need to save unlimited!!!!

    • trd105

Same Boat. It would be awesome if they were able to include the 12 month free financing on it then just pay $50 a month for 8 months.

  • M3D1T8R

I just might have to sell my DNA and jump on the Dev Edition for $400. This is the price point I’ve been waiting for. Need more storage, and might as well get the Dev Edition if I’m going Verizon 32GB, though I’d rather have a black back. Do we know when exactly this go live, maybe Sunday night?

  • Larry Bublitz

This is a good sign. $349 fits perfectly with the 16GB Moto G at $199, and I’m hoping we’ll see the $349 be permanent after the holidays. This gives Moto a chance to release the next high-end version at $499-599 again (and the usual contract prices).

    • Scott Capodice

This should have been the price from the beginning…would have outsold all of them. At least the black/white versions. If you had to pay more for the custom one, that would make sense.

      • hkklife

This 1000x. Had they hit the ground with these prices AND 32GB version availability on all carriers (forget Maker, just black and white color choices would have been sufficient) , Moto could have been in drastically better shape already.

Instead of paying off bloggers, that $500 M warchest should have been used to subsidize the hardware and allow for lower margins.

        • guesswhat

paying bloggers seriously? did they pay every independent blogger out there? everyone universally appreciated the phone .not sure where you are coming from ..i think people like you are so much stuck up on the 720p and dual core ..that they dont want to believe that this phone is good ..

      • Larry Bublitz

        Totes McGotes

  • RobRomeo

Just got an N5 but seriously considering hopping on this deal and selling the n5Nothing against the nexus really but what do you guys think??

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Unless you’re trying to jump to Verizon, keep the Nexus. You’ll be happier in the long run should you decide to get into ROM or kernel flashing.

  • JT

Question: If i just got an N5 and I’m on tmobile, how would i be able to get the sim card to work on this? If I’m correct, the sim cards are different sizes? This deal is incredible

    • moelsen8

get a nano sim cutter for like $10 on amazon. or cut very carefully. and then sand it, try to fit it, sand it a little more. it’s pretty quick and easy.

      • JT

Is there any way to do it so that i can keep and use both phones? I just got the N5 a few weeks ago, but this deal is way too good.

        • Grasshopper239

there should be nano to micro adapters available, look on amazon

          • JT

            Do those usually work well?

          • moelsen8

well enough I guess. mine came with adapters. its not pretty but it works. sandpaper helps.

          • Andromedo

Not in my experience. The couple I’ve tried add too much thickness for the micro SIM slot. I’m talking like one sheet of paper’s thickness is too much.

My solution was to cut the middle out of the adapter and verrrrry carefully tape the SIM into the middle of it.

            Not ideal by any means.

    • therock

T-Mobile has Nano Sims available on their site for free right now. I picked up 2 the other day

  • Anthony_Armando

I am jumping on this deal for sure!

  • they call me Rob

I’ve been trying to get a new Moto X or a new HTC One via swappa but it’s been hit/miss…if the $150 off applies to the $550 Verizon Dev Edition, I’m in for A $400 upgrade of my Galaxy Nexus!

    • scotch1337

do you know if the VZ edition has the same bloatware?

      • ReturnOfTheMack

As far as I know the only difference is that the developer edition Moto X has an unlockable bootloader. Same as the regular Verizon Moto X in every other way.

  • Joshua Hernandez

This stinks since I just bought a Moto X last week…

    • jess

Buy on Monday, return the one you bought last week. It’s not only the smart thing to do, it’s completely valid reason to do so.

  • NeedName

Can anyone tell me how good miracast is on this device for 1080p video playback and gaming? I’ve heard miracast kinda sucks for anything beyond mirroring.

  • Ryan Gullett

I wonder how limited this deal is going to be. “supplies are limited” was on their G+ page…I was thinking about selling my contract vzw phone and going with this one. But now I might just have to wait to see if I can get this deal first then sell my other Moto X.

  • ddevito

I’m getting one – I loved my X before I dumped Verizon. To be honest I can’t determine which phone I like more, the X or the Nexus 5.

  • s0nic69

Hey guys, i am debating about motox carrier vs developer edition. I want root, so thinking about developer edition, but cant find how to root, is it the same way as carrier edition? are they both as hard to root?

    • moelsen8

developer edition: fastboot oem unlock {code}, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (this being the TWRP you can find on xda). then go into recovery and it asks to root your phone for you. that rockmymoto/slapmymoto stuff on the locked versions is a pain in the ass to perform and a pain in the ass to use. had an at&t model for a while and my wife has a vzw. it’s nice to be on the DE again now. of course you could always root the DE with those methods too, but no reason not to unlock the BL.

      • s0nic69

Hey thanks a lot @moelsen8:disqus ! Sounds easy enough!

        • moelsen8

sure. if you know how to use adb and fastboot it’s literally as easy as it looks.

          • s0nic69

Yea @moelsen8:disqus , i was able to root my galaxy nexus (verizon) and HTC Incredible with fastboot and adb. If you know of any guides though, please post, would be greatly appreciative.

          • moelsen8

here’s one. same steps basically. starts from after unlocking the bootloader.

            http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536200

          • s0nic69

Owe you a beer moelsen8, great guide, even talks about kitkat, just what i needed.

          • s0nic69

Owe you a beer @moelsen8:disqus, great guide, even talks about kitkat, just what i needed.

  • bvsbutthd101

This is great, I can finally upgrade from my Gnex on verizon. Now which one to get. Regular or Dev version. I need the option to tether so maybe the dev edtion would be best since rooting will be easier.

  • Adam

I just returned my Nexus 7 that I got for $50 off today, only to find out the Moto X deal is going to have a limited supply. That fact was conspicuously absent from this article. All eggs are officially in one basket.

    • sirmeili

Where did you get that information (About the limited supply)?

      • Adam

Motorola posted it on their Google+ page.

  • arthuruscg

    Is Amazon price matching?

    • Maxim∑

      Im wondering the same

  • flosserelli

Freakin’ sweet. I was thinking about getting one for my Dad, this seals the deal.

  • CaptainHowdy13

If I hadn’t just bought an N5 I would be sold.

    • jamdev12

Return it. I just returned mine yesterday. I was tired of waiting for Google to fix the darn camera on the darn thing. I’m also disappointed at the speakers and battery. Getting a MotoX on Monday so it will be. Now what colors do I want on my phone?

      • Larizard

was it easy to return? my n5 is coming next week, but im really thinking of getting this moto x deal.. not sure how hard it is to return the n5.

  • Patrick Crumpler

Looks like it’ll be white face, navy back and red accents. Go Pats! Sweet deal.

    • bored_guest

      Pats all day!

  • Scott Capodice

I asked and you found it Tim…nice work…LOL!

  • Futbolrunner

I hope they will open this up to the Droid MAXX

    • ETPhoneHomeT

I doubt it, but I’m hoping too!

    • Dylan

I was almost ready to settle on a Maxx. For a $250 difference I’m thinking I may see how the battery holds up on the X.

  • MafiaMM

So on Cyber Monday, where exactly do we go to buy it? Motorola.com???

    • StuckOnVerizonForever
      • MafiaMM

No where does the article state where you can buy the phone once it goes on sale Cyber Sunday.

        • Ryan Gullett

          “Motorola announced they will host…”

        • grandautotheft5

          Motomaker.com

  • middlehead

Anybody know where to find decent signal strength reviews/comparisons these days? I’m generally happy with my current phone, except I’m finding more areas where I don’t get much strength but friends or coworkers do. My manager’s old-ass Rezound gets more reliable signal at my desk than my phone does :(

    • TC Infantino

The app “Cell Phone Coverage Map” seems like a good one.

      • middlehead

        Phones, not carriers.

        • TC Infantino

Ah, sorry. I misunderstood. I would say that you really can’t go wrong with Motorola phones. There is a reason that people cite Moto radios as a plus in comparisons with other phones.

          • middlehead

That’s what I remember historically, but I’m hoping to find something recent to back it up.

  • JoshGroff

If this works with their payment plan thing, I’m all over it!

    • gooner13

I don’t see why it wouldn’t. It’s not over $549, so no 18 month financing, but there should be 12 month financing available on it.

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Maybe I’m crazy, but is anyone else considering selling their G2 and getting the Moto X?

    • StuckOnVerizonForever

Absolutely not. Cant lose the camera, battery life, and power. Oh and screen size.

      • Sean Walton

Have you used the Moto X?

        • StuckOnVerizonForever

I dont need too. Ive seen it at the store and have heard many things about it. If you like it. Good for you. I don’t.

          • Sean Walton

You have never used it so you don’t like it LOL. SMH

            Cheers!

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I picked up a G2 again when Amazon had that price screw-up, and man, it really is a nice phone. Insanely fast, beautiful display, and a pretty amazing camera for a smartphone. I think my only issue with it is the super glossy nastiness on the back. Let me MotoMaker a G2! :P

        • Maxim∑

I refreshed the amazon page this morning and they fixed it -.-. Would you recommend the G2?

          • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Overall I love it, especially the edge to edge display. There’s just something about having a phone built specifically for you that’s just awesome :P

        • AdDoBe

Just pick up an Incipio Feather case from Amazon. That’s what my wife and I did. They’re super lightweight and now she has the pink phone that she wanted without having to wait for Motomaker (we picked up G2’s during Verizon’s “glitch”)

    • Mitch

I am… Screen size is only thing holding me back. I find the G2s to be perfect size wise

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Same here, that’s what’s holding me back, but there’s something about the Moto X I just love!

      • flosserelli

Agreed. That is the only thing keeping me from ditching my Note 2. It is hard to go back to a smaller screen, even though I love everything else about the X.

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

I just played with the Moto X at AT&T and Verizon. I must have been thinking it was better than it was, when I looked at it I realized how much I prefer the LCD of the G2 over that of the Moto X, the yellow whites look awful. The screen is also a lot smaller than I thought :/

    • Justin W

No, you aren’t crazy (or, maybe I am crazy). I’m selling my Note 3 to get a Moto X. Haters gonna hate, but I’ve played with the phone a little bit, and I absolutely love it compared to the Note 3. I’ll be missing out on a bigger screen, but the benefits of the Moto X (in my opinion) far outweigh the benefits of the Note 3.

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

I’m going to the store tonight to test it out, since I’ve never actually held a Moto X in person, but I think I might make the switch :)

        • Justin W

It’s… Amazing to say the least. I am sad I didn’t just buy a Moto X in the first place. No speed difference that I can notice between the two, and my custom one is sexy!

    • Apostrafee

I plan on keeping my G2 and getting the Moto X. I have a dream of having as extensive collection of devices as Kellen

  • StuckOnVerizonForever

With the reports of the Nexus 5, the moto x is probably the better choice.

  • Usty

Oh man…decisions decisions. Do I get the Verizon Developer edition or make my own kickass design on the regular one?

  • Rodeojones000

Holy crap, this is an amazing price. If you’re a Verizon customer with no other option but to stay with them you really can’t beat this deal. My wife has the X in white and absolutely loves it.

  • Allen

If I’m able to upgrade in February, do you guys recommend I jump on this or just wait it out for the Galaxy S5 and the next HTC One? I am tempted by this offer…

    • David Benson

Depends on the plan you have right now.

    • grandautotheft5

I would say jump on this. S5 would be more bloated than ever… I predict 16 Gb GS5 will only have 5gb free space.
S4 only has 9gb ish storage

  • http://BGR.COM/ riggs

Man this is a steal of a deal, with Motorola financing as well…. so tempting! Just to get another one.

  • NexusMan

Damn them!!! They really don’t want us to buy that wood, do they? I’ve been holding out this long for the wood, but I don’t think I can pass up this deal. I know Tim, you’ve been waiting too. What are you going to do, now?

  • SaulTKnutts

I just got a Galaxy S4 (when they were stupid-cheap on Amazon for, like, 20 minutes). How does the Moto X compare to the GS4? I can always sell the GS4 (probably for more than I paid) and pounce on a Moto X Dev Edition, I guess. Any thoughts from anyone who has used both?

    • Maxim∑

I had the GS4 and Moto X. I see no point in returning the GS4 for a Moto X kind of seems like a slight downgrade to me the display on the GS4 was a lot better imo. How cheap was it on amazon at the time?

      • SaulTKnutts

        Thanks for your thoughts.

There was a wacky short-lived sale on Amazon a couple of weeks ago (which I learned of here on DL) and I got a Verizon GS4 off-contract for $199.

  • moelsen8

just received my moto x on monday.. i called and they said to call back when the promotion is live and they’ll offer a $50 google play card or $50 visa credit. eh, worst case scenario i get that. best case is i’m able to get in on the deal and motorola’s getting a phone back that they’ll have to refurbish.

  • Matt

Would this be a good upgrade from my S3? I’m currently running CM10.

    • RadicalPie

      Yes

    • flosserelli

Moto X is so good you won’t even miss CM.
