Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Unboxing

samsung galaxy note 3

It’s time to start our official coverage of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3! We have an unlocked international unit in house, have gone ahead and unboxed it, and will now be embarking on a journey into tablet-phone-hybrid land. As most of you know, I have never been the biggest fan of the oversized device craze, but because I try to keep an open mind for the most part, am fully willing to give the new Note 3 a fair shot. Actually, both Tim and I will be 100% committed to all things Note 3 over the coming weeks, so you’ll want to stick with us as usual to see how this adventure unfolds.

Again, this is the international variant of the Note 3, which means I’m working on HSPA+ and with the Octa-core processor combo. Those really are the only differences over the U.S. variants, so we shouldn’t see much of an experience change from one to the other. We still have the same 5.7″ FHD Super AMOLED display, 3GB RAM, 13MP camera, and TouchWiz experience atop Android 4.3. We’ll more than likely have specific U.S. experiences to share once we get closer to launch.

So, enjoy the unboxing below! Then drop any questions you have or tests you’d like to see performed. This should be a fun couple of weeks, assuming this thing fits in my jean pockets.

  • BCcowgill

    PO’d Noties are vicious.

  • trek

Man, you are really negative towards Samsung. How about an unbiased unboxing.I don’t really care about your likes or dislikes, just review the phone.

    • Reginald Jefferson

But it isn’t a review. Now what?

      • chris420o

        this^

  • ROB

I thought it was a good unboxing…of course I had it on mute.

  • frankie

finally some coverage at least you were honest enough you were not a big fan of it, wonder if this will outdo the note 2’s 30 million sales

  • imaletufinish

Everybody complained about the slippery, finger print-magnet plastic on previous Samsungs and this still isn’t good enough? If you base your phone purchase on the back cover material, what would you rather they would have made it out of:

    – Real leather? Right, the animal rights people would flip.

    – Aluminum? I like good phone reception and a removable battery. See HTC One for that design dillema.

    – Some other metal. If you want a heavy phone, buy an 80’s brick phone on Ebay. A phone of this size made of metal would be ridiculously heavy.

    – Wood, like the rumored real wood upcoming Moto X option? Um, no I’ll save a few million trees thank you.

    – Carbon fiber/Kevlar, The Droids pretty much massacred that look already.

Tell me design professionals, what would you do?

    • Dregur

I would love a phone with cotton. I could use it like a mini pillow! Or, you know, use better plastic like the Lumia 920 or HTC One X, or Moto X….

      • imaletufinish

Ok Billy Mays, next you’re going to tell me those other phones use space age plastic polymers. But wait, there’s more!…

    • chris420o

um animal rights people would flip if it was real leather? what about your couches car seats your belts n what not? are they throwing red paint on u lol..dope

  • Jason Bittner

soooooooo is the international version bootloader locked down too?

  • John

You are seriously annoying. No one is interested in a biased review. You treat the phone like “ok guess I’ll take a look at this junk”. Who gives a crap about the back cover or plastic being used? One of the most important things you should have noticed right away is how light the phone is and that’s the most important thing to somebody like me. you’re probably one of these people that insists on metal covers and the phone is a brick like an iPhone.

    • crazed_z06

Here’s a very thorough review of the device minus the DL politics .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe689kgpEIo&feature=youtu.be&noredirect=1

      • frankie

this too :) take note kellex lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2Yr7PvgKQw

      • Richard Yarrell

Thank god for a true professional review from someone who cares about people who may be interested in the product. Kellen has gotten to big in his panties thinking he’s actually important when he’s not.

    • randpost

      I felt the same way.

Whaaaa! I got to take off plastic off from the phone bezel and screen. Whaaa! plastic, whaaa! fake leather, whaaaaaa! My 8mo old baby whines less.

Try to enter an unboxing or a review with an open mind.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

The Note cult runs deep, and serious.

      • schlanz

        And the Moto X cult?

      • jak_341

We are not a cult…are we?

        • Reginald Jefferson

          Sounds cult like to me.

    • chris420o

why dont you goto the gym so you can handle these “heavy” phones….lol so sad

  • RaptorOO7

Kellen you are so clueless! What are these things, little antenna’s are you serious. Everyone knows they are replacement NIBS for the S-Pen.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Hey, I don’t use S Pens. :P

  • jim

anyone know the price if you buy it outright ?

    • Mike Hilal

Verizon $699. Not sure about other carriers.

  • sk3litor

I vote that kellen is no longer allowed to review phones he doesnt like.to much negativity. ;)

    • randpost

Then he would only be reviewing Iphone’s… oh wait this is an android site.

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

You sir, are way too serious about the Galaxy Note 3. :P

        • randpost

          I know right. :D

        • frankie

you will be surprised to know how loyal note fans can be :)

          • Bald_Sasquach

Ahhhhh… that’s what it is. It’s like old Hyundai Azera buyers: No matter how smart the purchase and how much they love the product, they’re insecure about what peiople think about the company, and therefore feel the need to justify and defend their purchase against even the most minor slights. I get that the note can do A LOT of cool things, but it’s not doing anyone any favors to make the user base look rabid. It’s not impossible for samsung to use matte finish plastic and vastly increase the quality feel of their phones. Show me a single moto x, lumia, one x, or nexus tablet user that has said “this is nice and all, but I wish it looked like leather.”

            Sorry, that got long.
P.S. I realize the Azera analogy isn’t a stellar one, especially since Hyundai has moved upmarket in the last few years.

  • Intellectua1

I can’t wait to get my hands on this baby.. I miss the Note Series, this S4 is nice but too tiny.. I also miss having a stylus that I never use, but I like having one anyway..

  • jim

I have never heard anyone that has a note 2 say anything bad it, so it must really be a great phone, I don’t care about the back, only whats inside that counts

    • John

I so agree with that and couldn’t be happier with mine. I’m more then content on my 2 year contract and renewing my Note 2 with a Note 4.

    • yankeesusa

Agreed, most people put a cover on it anyway.

    • C-Law

The note 2 was a great phone but it was way too damn big so I gave it to my mom and got an s4

      • KOBALT

I gave my big one to your Mom too

  • ApplesNAndroids

I don’t think he dislikes the phone. It’s just samsung. It’s an opinion. It’s also my opinion samsung makes terrible smartphones. People hate on Apple all day but samsung followers are just as much “sheep” as the next.

    • Tim242

If you don’t like the material of the battery cover, that’s OK. But, using thatas a reason to say they make terrible ssmartphones is idiotic at best.

    • frankie

do you read sites like appleinsider? they go ballistic over stuff like samsung having more profits than apple lol. believe me… they defend apple like crazy

  • jim

who really cares about what the back of a phone looks like, kids,,,

  • jaredgreenwald

Can someone explain to me why Samsung only puts the octa-core processors in the international versions and not the US versions?

    • Intellectua1

      Network Compatibility Issues..

    • Jason Bittner

The SoC for the octa core does not support LTE bands …. yet

  • Tim242

I am looking forward to the soft touch back. It is much easier to grip. Keller your hate of Samsung is clouding your judgment.

    • Diablo81588

And your fanboyism is getting annoying.

      • Tim242

Yes, because preferring something other than what you choose is being a fanboy…

        • jim

tim , this place is full of little kids,

        • Diablo81588

I don’t go around complaining in the comments about the site owner not liking Samsung’s design choices. I also remember him saying that the S4 GPE is one of his favorite phones. Your arguments don’t have merit.

          • Tim242

Opinions are one thing, using them to constantly bash is trolling. If you want to keep respect as a site, you have to watch your bias. I don’t like the iPhone. I’m not going to post a review just to bash it.

          • yankeesusa

Great point tim. Being biased especially for an unboxing is important. That’s why I also check androidpolice and androidcentral.

          • Bald_Sasquach

            Nice try, tim’s second account.

  • YankInDaSouth

“because I try to keep an open mind for the most part” …

Open mind as I proceed to bash and throw digs at Samsung at every opportunity … JESUS!

  • Colin Huber

    Kellen hates this device, ha.

    • Tim242

Yeah, Keller has bias. That’s a shame.

      • Dregur

Soo..he’s human? My god, I thought he was an Android.

You see what I did there? Cuz I didn’t. Nope.

        • Tim242

When you review something, you accept what it is and review it fairly. If he doesn’t like a design choice, that’s OK. But to use that to bash every chance he gets is bias. We don’t like the iPhone. Let’s order one to review. We’ll bash it and never give it a fair shot. See what I did there?

          • Dregur

No, that’s called having an opinion.

          • Tim242

Having an opinion is not the issue. The issue is constantly using that opinion about one detail to judge every other detail. We know he doesn’t care for the iPhone. Wouldn’t it be annoying to hear him state that 30 times in every Android phone unboxing and review?

          • Dregur

Soo…he doesn’t like the unit he’s unboxing? That seems…almost logical that he’s talking about it.

          • Tim242

The reason for the review is to show the device to let people decide on their own if they like it. Obviously people that buy Samsung phones couldn’t care less about the material of the battery cover.

          • Dregur

First off, this is an unboxing, not a review. It’s supposed to replicate what someone might be thinking when they first open up the packaging. Secondly, people that buy phones do care about the material of the battery cover. This is not a Samsung blog, this is an Android blog. People are looking for other phones, not just Samsung, and the feel of the battery cover is actually quite important for a variety of reasons.

          • Tim242

It is an unboxing and mini review. Obviously people don’t care thatthe battery cover is plastic…they sell tons of them. In the three years I’ve worked in a corporate cell phone store, not once has a customer brought up the material of the phone. That is an obsession of nerds on tech blogs.

          • Dregur

Really? Not a single person has gone “Oh, this one is made of metal and feels more solidly built” ever? Right. And hi, this is a tech blog dedicated to all things Android called, and lemme quote the name of it, “Droid-Life”. Where do you think we are, Time’s Technology Blog?

          • Tim242

Not a single person. Most of them do like most people on this blog…cover it in a plastic case. Oh, the irony. You declaring what this site is, is quite funny. All Android phones are not Droids.

          • Dregur

Actually if you want to get all technical about it, all Androids are Droids since the original meaning of droid was short for Android, regardless of Verizon marketing speak. And using my own anecdotal evidence, everyone I know complains about the plastics used in Samsung products, so that means everyone cares about the plastics used by Samsung. Hooray!

          • Tim242

Droid is not short for Android. Droid comes from Star Wars, and Verizon has to pay George Lucas for the rights to use it. Regardless of who you know, the numbers speak for themselves. Samsung is thriving, HTC is about to go under. Now, look at just Samsung VS Apple. Samsung sells more smart phones than even Apple. I guess you are now going to tell me that the people you know don’t use plastic cases either. Lastly, every HTC One sold in my store has had a plastic case on it. Stop arguing, you know I’mright.

          • Dregur

I..what? Is “Droid” a trademarked term? Yes, yes it is (Trademarked in 2009). But to say it’s not short for Android is mind blowingly odd. I could talk about the word “droid”‘s origins, and the etymology of the word, but I don’t think you really care.

In regards to plastic cases, yeah? So what? Those plastic cases probably still feel better than the plastic on the back of the Samsung Note 3 that Keller was talking about. Probably because they felt the plastic would break if they didn’t have a higher quality plastic covering the plastic that is underneath the plastic.

And yes, I’ve re-watched what Keller is talking about, he’s talking about being cheap plastic, not the fact it was plastic. People totally do care about that, and therefore feel like they need a case. Which, by the way, is completely irrelevant to the discussion in the first place.

          • Tim242

Plastic is plastic. Even he knows that. He doesn’t like the glossy plastic feel. That has nothing to do with durability. Your logic makes no sense. If people only use cases on plastic phones because they think that it needs it due to the plastic, then why in the hell do people with aluminum phones cover them in cases? You are an idiot and I’m done here. I’ve proven my care many times over.

          • Dregur

Take the Moto X. Or the HTC One X, most people don’t complain about the plastic on those phones, because the plastic feels better and is of higher quality.

A lot of people use plastic cases on Aluminum phones because while the aluminum is quite durable, they can still dent quite easily without losing their structural integrity. Some people don’t like dents on their phones, ergo cases of all different types, plastic being one of the more common ones. A “rubber” like TPU is also used because it’s cheap, and has some give, giving it some shock absorption.

          • Tim242

So tell me again why the back material matters. If people put cases on metal and plastic phones, why does it matter? When you said most people didn’t complain, you meant most tech blog nerds. Most of the rest of the world outside of the blogs couldn’t care less. There’s a lot of hypocrisy. Myriam from Engadget blasted the S4 and called it a turd due to the plastic back. But when she reviewed the G2, she called it best Android phone to date. It has the exact same glossy plastic as the S4.

          • Dregur

Sometimes people don’t like cases. Sometimes people like the feel of a higher quality plastic. Sometimes people like a glass back that I find that it would break easily. Sometimes they like metal instead of plastic. Sometimes people have differing opinions about what’s important to them.

Also, I noticed that two different people reviewed the S4 and the LG G2 on Engadget. And reading some of the reviews they both complained about the plastics and design of the S4 and LG G2. Doesn’t mean they didn’t like the phone, which by the way, Kellex hasn’t sent in his verdict of the phone yet either.

          • Tim242

Brad and Myriam do the podcast, and they talk at length about reviews. She couldn’tget over tthe plastic turd. Yet, the G2 and iPhone 5 C have the same glossy plastic and she loves them…they just feel better.*rolls eyes* There’s no difference in the durability ofthe plastics. Samsung uses the same ppolycarbonate as everybody else. They just make theirs glossier than some. 99% of people use cases. I’m in the 1% that doesn’t. I never think about the back of the phone.

          • Dregur

Actually, that’s not true at all. Not all plastics are created equal. See Lumia 920 polycarbonate vs. S4’s polycarbonate. Very different in weight, thickness, and durability. Probably the same with the G2 and iPhone 5C.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic

Or they could not like to a variety of other design decisions despite the outside of their phones like the frame of the phone or a myriad other reasons that could differ from the S4.

          • Tim242

Samsung uses a lesser thickness on just the battery door, to make it removable. The rest, like the sides is the same as everybody else.

          • Dregur

            That’s…not even true.

          • Tim242

Good comeback. Sales numbers speak for themselves. Time and time again, people choose Samsung…in droves.

          • Dregur

Sales numbers don’t actually have any correlation to what we’re talking about. If it were, we should all drive Ford Focuses since they’re the best selling car in the world, and apparently, ergo, the best designed car in the world.

          • Tim242

Sales numbers have everything to do with what we are talking about. If so many people were disgusted by their plastic, the would buy something else. The Ford Focus sold so many because of its low price. Samsung phones cost the same as its counterparts. Next…

          • CraigBoyte

I don’t understand why you keep coming to the site and reading it if you dislike what they do so much. Last time I checked there are dozens of other Android blogs

          • frankie

yes everyone has opinions, but I noticed he is more critical of samsung than other android brands. lets see how the full review will look like

        • tomn1ce

He sure is….I think that’s why he’s having Tim or one of the others test and review the device.

  • NIGHTSCOUT

fake stitching = EPIC FAIL. Deal Breaker for me…..

    • mjmedstarved

Yeah, what the heck IS up with that?

      • Mr E

How else do you suggest attaching your fake leather? ;)

        • mjmedstarved

          You just.. don’t? hahaha

Gosh I hope the rumors I hear about a LTE N5 are true.

    • jim

a deal breaker? you got to be kidding, how old are you ? and all this crap about the leather back, who cares what the back looks like, its always in your hand

      • NIGHTSCOUT

Exactly, when I hold the device in my palm, I will feel that fake stitching EVERY….SINGLE…..TIME…..Like I said, would have been better as real stitching, or no stitching at all.

        • jim

          kids

        • Tim242

If you think you’ll feel that, you have issues. If that would bother you, you need medication.

        • frankie

you can change the back with any other back you want no problem

      • Dregur

If no one cares, why did Samsung do it?

  • ERIC SORENSEN

Nice clean home button on that International version! If I drop Unlimited, can I get a clean home button with Verizon?

  • fred

FYI….. ordering through Amazon still allows you to keep your unlimited data. Activated the droid maxx, and should be good for a while, loving this phone.

    • tomn1ce

Did you buy it with a contract?

      • chocolate8175

        I’m curious as well

  • Nate

kellen is a cunt….way to whiny

  • ERIC SORENSEN

Please check the file tranfer speed of the USB3 connector (connected to a USB3 capable computer). How does it compare to another current USB2 enabled phone?.

  • drudometkin

I hate those hiding capacitive buttons. I had a note 2 for a few weeks and never got used to them. Always pressed them by accident.

  • grumpyfuzz

The first thing I would do on this device is install cyanogenmod. That would make this phone much much better.

  • Brian Utne

“What is that?” *Throws back in to box* hahaha

  • SammySunged

Is it region locked as most articles not on Droid-Life are reporting?

  • chris

If you have one of the S View cases, I am interested to see how that works for.you. What happens with the flap during phone usage? Does it constantly get in the way? Do you find it more inconvenient when taking from your pocket when trying to answer a call since you also have to deal with the flap then? These questions really go for any diary style case, but I am wondering if Samsung has something in place that helps the issue…or maybe makes it worse. If it had magnets to attach the flap to the back during use, for.example. Is the magnet for that or closing to cover the phone?

    • tomn1ce

I think that the one with the window you’ll be able to answer a call through the window. Now the full flap cover is a different story…

  • David Salsburg

I’m really wanting this device. However, the HTC One Max is very attractive because of the boom sound speakers. Stylus might be awesome, which looks like it’s missing from the Max. also the Max is only (rumored?) to have a SD 600 proc.. (‘ONLY’.. how spoiled we all have become).

Is anyone in this same boat on which of these ‘phablets’ to get? and what are your pro’s / con’s ?

    • ERIC SORENSEN

I’ve decided on the Note 3 over the One Max for these reasons: 3GB, Replacable batter, Memory card, faster processor, and POSSIBLY it can be rooted and the bootloader unlocked like the Verizon note 2 can be. The only thing the One max has over the note 3 is the nice speakers. The HTC one is locked down tight by Verizon.

      • David Salsburg

all reasons i am leaning towards the Note also.
i just really wish Sammy would put those front speakers and Beats Audio on there too… tell you one thing, if the One Max does have the 800 proc at time of release, i’ll be even more hard pressed to decide.
        TMO for me, BTW.

        • ERIC SORENSEN

If the one MAX has 3gb ram and the 800, it will be a tough choice. 3GB of ram will make a big difference. Apps from 2 days ago will open instantly. Not the case with my Gnex.

          • Diablo81588

I’m curious about battery drain on 3GB of RAM though. Keeping that much volatile memory active could have an impact on battery life.

          • Dregur

I don’t believe RAM is that much of a battery drain.

  • Philip J. Fry

“Theres so much touchwiz on this that it wouldnt work with 16 gb”

Thats ridiculous that samsung has that much bullsh*t on one device.

  • Tony Byatt

Kellen, you really gotta let the faux leather thing go…

    • michael arazan

I Guess Samsung is Not Paying Him = P

      • rthvk

        MOTOMONEY!

        @Ron

  • zepfloyd

No antennas Kellex, they are tips / nibs for the S-Pen.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Heh, that’s good to know. :)

  • viewthis66

complain complain complain! geeez! No, Kellex it’s not a MotoX. Stop ruining the experience for the lot of us that actually want this phone.

    • Chrisdroid

I agree, he should be saving his negative comments for other stuff, this is the best phone EVER!

      • Adrynalyne

YEAH! You will bend over and take what Samsung gives you, and you will LIKE IT. If not, you are a traitor to Android and a sex offender.

        /s

        • tomn1ce

The sex offender would be the one doing the shoving -_-

        • Chrisdroid

Adrynalyne, NOT at all, I’ve had them all, beeries, apples and androids, at this moment, I own a nexus 4 and love it (which btw its LG not samsung) but there is no comparison to the superiority of the note 2, specially the battery performance, etc etc, so now the note 3 is basically the S4 on steroids, (which btw I owned the S4 as well but once again the battery and missing the big screen was a big issue) So the reason why I love the NOTE 3 is cause, number one I’m not an ignorant about technology like you probably Think I am, and this by far is a superior phone above any other, and this is based on comparisons with any other phone in the market, Windows, apples, berries and Androids, so if Samsung was giving me a bad product, I’m not stupid or a an iSheep blind ignorant follower, and I wouldn’t buy it, second I don’t care about loyalty specially on electronics, I’ll go to whatever I like after doing tons of research on it and I’m sure of what’s going on.

          • Adrynalyne

Superiority is in the eye of the beholder. That was my point. The idea of not criticizing Samsung or their products, or merely only looking at the good is a practice iSheep have used for years.

This is the best phone ever! is something we see from iSheep on every iPhone release.

          • Chrisdroid

There are some obvious things when we’re talking about superiority of one device over another, the ability to swap batteries, or an SD CARD slot, or a quadcore 1.6 against a quadcore 2.3, you know what I mean? a 720 screen against a 1080p etc etc.

          • Adrynalyne

Srsly get your bunk arse and your spen on freenode now

          • Chrisdroid

and Yeah, I’m pretty excited about this phone so I have the right to scream and be excited about it you know? plus first 3 gigs of ram.

          • Adrynalyne

Of course you have the right. Others have the right to knock it as well.

          • Chrisdroid

Of course, we all have the right to be assholes as well…But I believe on smart assholes and stupid assholes, which one are you?

          • Chrisdroid

I wish we just fight against our common enemy…Apple

          • Bob

Sad thing is he uses a mac mini for his main machine… With that posturing he just might be able to beat John McCain for his seat this go around.

          • Reginald Jefferson

Didn’t know using a Mac mini was bad.

          • Richard Yarrell

Bottom line here the Galaxy Note 3 is and will be the BEST handset coming on the market till at least May/June. Rather Kellen cares for Samsung or Note products or not doesn’t matter. One thing is for sure it pisses all over his fanboy stock Nexus 4 or upcoming Nexus 5 device that’s for sure. Everyone knows Nexus doesn’t sell worth a horses ass.

          • squiddy20

“Everyone knows Nexus doesn’t sell worth a horses ass.” And apparently everyone but you remembers that the Nexus 4 was sold out for weeks at a time after only a few days (sometimes even hours) of being made available again on the Play Store or Amazon. For a phone that “doesn’t sell worth a horses ass”, there was quite the wait. Moron.
Also, as I’ve said to you repeatedly, comparing any Nexus phone to any phablet is like trying to compare a sedan to an SUV. Of course the SUV is going to have more power and more space, because it’s physically bigger than a sedan. What a concept.

          • Leonardo Rojas

            Same here n.n
I like the Note 3 as you do, and consider it really advanced, and kind of a superior smartphone, if you learn to use it. But, I’m afraid I like a bit more the Xperia Z Ultra, despite not being as full of interesting features as the Note 3. That’s why I’m here to read and watch these videos and reviews to device on getting one or another.
One important aspect, the most important I think, for me would be to really KNOW how the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa CPU compares to the version with the S800. I think I’d be more interested and next to buy the Note 3 if in my country the 2 carriers would offer the version with the S800 CPU rather than the Exynos one that’s more probably going to be here as the S4 Exynos was, cause we don’t have LTE (and won’t have it for a year or more). Because I’m afraid I think the S800 version could be better, that’s why I want to know all about how the Exynos version does, if it has issues (heating?), etc so I can compare it and measure it against the XZU and finally decide. I’ve heard the S600 version of the S4 was/is better than the Exynos one, don’t want to find ugly surprises n.n I know the Note 3’s Exynos is new and better now… So let’s see n.n It’d be my first Samsung smartphone. I’ve had a super nice Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and now have an speedy Motorola Razr i. I hope the change from relatively stock Android to TouchWiz doesn’t give me stomach aches >-<
What do you think? Can you help me? Anyone? Thanks for reading!

Couldn’t agree more! I had hate oozing out of my monitor!

  • JRUIV

    Is it water proof?

    • Menger40

I heard they’re adding it in a launch day update

    • tomn1ce

That’s coming with Kit-Kat and the new version of TW…. :-)

    • Chrisdroid

There’s an App for that!!………But seriously, the first one on launch it won’t be, but there are rumors that it will be an “active” version just like the S4 active, water proof and bendable screen.

  • Bigwavedave25

Extra bits.. not antennas, but s-pen tips. I wear down the tip on my Wacom Cintiq pen and need to replace it once every few months. Doubtful this will see the same usage and pressure but cool that they supply extras!

  • sirmipsalot

Other sites are saying that the international “unlocked” gn3 is actually sim region-locked, and that there’s a disclaimer sticker to that effect. ie, it’ll only accept a sim from European countries, and then attempting to use a US sim leads to a sim lock screen. Are you guys seeing anything that indicates this is somehow sim region-locked?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

They are SIM region locked, but unlocked phone resellers are selling phones locked to the Americas. This one works fine on T-Mobile LTE.

      • sirmipsalot

        Thanks!

      • MallardRider

Yes that would be true if it is a T-Mobile US SIM card. The question would be what would happen if you take the Note 3 to the UK and swap the T-Mobile US SIM card with a EE or O2 SIM card.

  • Ron_Swanson

Thank you…..was about to comment on that.

    • Ian

      comment on what?

      • Ron_Swanson

        The back cover…..misplaced reply. Whoops.

  • Abhijeet Mishra

How’s out of the box performance with the octa-core? I always think those poor A7 cores just can’t handle the bloat and high-resolution screen and stuff. Also, let us know how performance sticks over the next couple of days. Thanks!

  • chris johnson

So Kellen what is better G2 or Note 3?

  • Dominick White

am i only one, that got distracted from what he was saying, because the back cover wasnt on right?

    • Curtis

I paused the video at 6:36 just to come and search the comments to see if he eventually snaps it on.. I guess not huh?

    • David Salsburg

      ME!

    • Ryan Powell

      YES!

    • Evan Knofsky

I couldn’t stop looking at that, snap it man

    • Buur

Was going to say the same thing. It was driving me crazy.

      • Chris Hannan

How can something so stupid bother us soooo much?

        • Bob

          Because we are technosexuals….

    • jeff

the most annoying part was him comparing the width to the s4 and he hated the note3 so much he didn’t even bother to snap the back on

      • michael arazan

Should of Gave the Note 3 to Tim to review

    • Richard Yarrell

Pretty unprofessional unboxing definitelyone of the worst I have seen yet. The youtube comments reflectex actly what I am saying. It’s a sad conclusion this guy is comically so full of himself to a point that he forgets what his job is suppose to be. Kellen is truly a sad Verizon stock android fanboy who forgot what it is he’s supposed to be doing. This Droid-Life site is full of butt kissers for this guy it’s a sad joke.

      • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

Here is an idea, go over to BGR you will loooovvvee it there! I was distracted by the back cover but it wasn’t that big a deal. The site is called droidlife so yeah I would say being a Verizon fanboy was kinda a reason the site was named droidlife. I just want to know when it became a bad thing to be a stock android homer. I don’t ever see it hurting his reviews, touchwiz is awful IMO and I’m using a freaking gs4 right now.

    • 1bad69z28

Yeah that’s Kellen LOL If he doesn’t like something he’ll let you know LOL

Anyone else remember the Palm Treo back in the day?? This was the first “Smartphone” mostly for the business professional.

Definitely a great and popular cell phone that had all of the Microsoft and productivity technology ahead of its times.but built in and heavy as hell. Plus leading the way for touch screen technology till Palm fell flat on its ass!!!.

This is where I see Samsung going with the Galaxy Note series for the business professional while providing productivity and still keeping the entertainment and fun of the mobile world.

After reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Note youtube video’s I came away thinking of the old Palm Treo.

    • pamelabutler88

      I just got
paid $6784 working off my laptop this month. And if you think that’s cool, my
divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $9k her first month. It feels
so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less.

These get worse and worse every day…

  • rutgersjaffo

You guys are going to LOVE this device.

  • Bigwavedave25

How does the GN3 screen clarity and crispness compare to the LG G2??

  • Ian

On the second picture of the back of the device it looks like the first “S” in the logo is peeling off…

    • duke69111

I think it’s just the reflective light, but it does look like its peeling.

  • Tommy Thompson

Those are the nubs for the Stylus..

  • billjohnson777

    Touch.Whiz.Is.So.Gross. Yep. G2 it is.

    • RaptorOO7

I like TouchWiz just fine on the GS4 and I like it on the GN3 :)

      • billjohnson777

That’s cool man. I wish that’s what everyone would get. We all have different preferences. I hated iOS until now because it was shiny. It’s just a personal preference. :)

    • Tyler James Edward Hills

Right because the G2 skin is nothing like Samsung. So light and minimal.

Seriously there’s a few reasons to get the G2 over the S4 or Note 3. But that isn’t one of them. LG’s skin is a 100% Samsung ripoff in terms of design

      • billjohnson777

Hey man I agree….I was simply noting that it’s the lesser of two evils. And I know I’ve said this in other places…at least they’re not still using GB green. Also for me being a VZW subscriber, the G2 can still be rooted for now…I’m positive that likely won’t be achieved for the Note 3 unfortunately.. :/

        • Bigwavedave25

Root access I would say is quite likely, there are already a few great devs that said they would be working on it. Unlocking the bootloader on the other hand is what is keeping me slightly at bay from pulling the trigger on this device. That one may be less likely.

But I wouldn’t rule out this awesome community for anything.

          • billjohnson777

True true but it seems like that’s becoming less and less obtainable. Especially on Big Red. I hate to be cynical but man the evidence is really stacking up against them.

          • Bigwavedave25

Yup, I agree. Between their locked down phones and now wanting to overrule the FCC and restrict the internet on their network… really starting to hate Vz. But not ready to take my business elsewhere b/c of the great coverage. Stuck for now. :-/

          • billjohnson777

I know bud! I think anymore that’s about 100% of at least the tech community who understands this stuff but lives in a technology desolate land such as myself haha.

          • grumpyfuzz

Seems like you know a lot about bootloaders, is the Note 3’s international version locked? Because if it is, then there’s no way I will buy it.

          • Bigwavedave25

I don’t know much about bootloaders, only if unlocked it makes it easy to install custom kernels and update the radios. There have been workarounds. I currently have a GNex, so dev support has been bliss. The dev support info I posted above was only gathered from stalking the device threads on XDA, not much on Rootz about it yet.

I don’t know about the international version, butt he Vz version will be locked down like Ft KNOX… ;)

    • Churchill

The LG skin isn’t that much better. Though their color combinations are a lot better than those found on touchwiz.

    • David

LMAO LG’s skin is wayyy worse.

      • billjohnson777

Yo thug I hate all skins to be honest. I suppose out of all them Sense 5 is the least “bad”. However for me personally it’s not as bad as Sammy stuff.

    • Tim242

LG’s skin is TW, but much worse. Troll harder

  • kevin

Ok PLEASE PLEASE PLEEAAASSEE answer this one question for me. the Galaxy s4 is running 4.2 right now. One of the features in this is that you should be able to use lock screen widgets. While I find lock screen widgets amazing, it is sad to find out that samsung has taken away the ability to use lock screen widgets while having a secured lockscreen such as a pattern lock while this is something you can do in stock android. My question for you guys now, since This thing is running android 4.3, are you now able to use lock screen widgets WHILE having a secured lock screen? Such as having access to the camera and what not?

    • jtdfan

They are actually there. Under Settings –> My Device –> Lock Screen. You can enable Multiple Widgets. However, the Samsung main widget will always be on the home screen. I hope that helps.

      • kevin

Well thats the thing. The setting is there BUT if you have any form of security enabled then the option goes away thus making lock screen widgets un usable. The only lock screen widget you will be able to use is the default text notification widget and the default widget but thats about it.

Edit: For example, on stock android if I have a pattern lockscreen I am still able to use things such as dash clock and what not AND im still able to swipe to use the camera. On samsungs version of this version of android if i have a pattern lock I am not able to use any of these features.

  • Bob

Is it me or does Kellen kinda have toe-thumbs?

    • jbdan

Not seeing that. Just a clean looking manicure

      • Bob

Maybe they are not as wide as I thought but they are still some snaussages. I hope he played/plays football.

        • jbdan

          lol!

    • Futbolrunner

      Have you seen Megan Fox’s?

      • Bob

You just ruined Megan Fox for me… guess I could put a bag over them (in my dreams…)

        • Mr E

It’s only when pics are cropped like this that anybody looks at her thumbs….

          • Gasaraki

She actually has hand models whenever there’s a movie shot that shows her hands. Not lying here.

        • Skynet

Dude, she has a big toe for a thumb. Yuck!

    • Wolfgang71

His thumbs look like Honey Boo Boo’s fat mother…

  • duke69111

Can you charge with a microusb 2.0 charger, just slower?

    • RaptorOO7

You can charge with USB2.0, though it is slower.

  • Bob

So purrrty. Too bad they didn’t make the device smaller with the same screen size as the GN2.

I wonder where the resident DL troll Adrynalyne is at?

    • David Salsburg

He’s busy porting BAMF to the HTC One Max.

    • Philip J. Fry

But then it wouldn’t be classified as a “note”.

    • Adrynalyne

I already said my piece about it. Trolling would be to continue on into a different article’s comments, much like you did here. Good job, champ!

      • Bob

        Come back to IRC!

        • Adrynalyne

What is this ‘IRC’ you speak of?!

          • Bob

            efnet of course :)

          • Adrynalyne

            efnet?

            ef that!

Have I ever been on efnet? Been on freenode, been on andirc… Maybe I blocked it out.

            Joder, is that you?!

          • Bob

            Freenode I mean!!

  • Menger40

I really like how thin it is. As kleendroid would say…

    Amazing
