Chromecast Officially Back in Stock Through Google Play, Orders Ship in 1-2 Days

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 10.41.35 AM

After a couple of months of stock issues, Google’s Chromecast is now back in stock and shipping within 1-2 days through Google Play. Since being introduced in July, Google and a variety of other retailers have had trouble keeping the HDMI dongle in stock. Within the last week, though, we have seen Best Buy hold a steady inventory, so it makes sense that Google would catch up as well. It is their product after all.

At $35, the Chromecast is still a no-brainer if you are a tech enthusiast. While you may not use it by the hour, it certainly comes in handy as an additional to your home media setup. Plus, with additional support arriving in the future from additional media companies, it could become your go-to video streaming device.

Chromecast owners, still using your dongle?

Ok, Google, your little dongle is a runaway success. Now, can we have actual apps that use it other than the ones that did on release day?

    Spotify
    Hulu
    Chrome Browser on mobile

It’s my go-to Netflix player now. The Tivo Netflix app sucks and using Chromecast via my phone is soooo much better. The Youtube experience through Chromecast is so much better than anything else, too. Right now my wishlist is:

Local media support – Plex, whatever, I don’t care. But if it had a way to play videos from my network I’d be set and not have to hook up the raspberry pi for that.
Chromecast support in the Big Ten Network and ESPN apps. That could do more for “cutting the cable” than anything else – being able to ‘cast sports would be a killer feature.

I am definitely still dongling my dongle.

  • Nick

i walked into best buy on tuesday to get star trek into darkness and when i got to the register i saw one behind the desk and it became mine. got home and hooked it up and spent the next 3-4 hours just playing with it. Youtube from my tablet, neflix from my phone, tabs and desktop from my pc. i didnt have any streaming devices connected to my bedroom tv before this so now instead of laying in bed with my tablet watching netflix and youtube shows (i got hooked on Orange is the new black on netflix the other day and marathoned the first season, and on youtube there is too much to list) now i can watch on my tv. cant wait to see what they add in the future.

  • Nick Klenchik

Weird question, do you think Chromecast will receive software updates and whatnot?

  • Dreisch92

mine arrived from amazon today after ordering it the 8th of august, a month faster than their prediction

  • Malcolm Love

I’ve been using the crap out of mine. Love it.

  • Gr8Ray

I’ve been trying to figure out how to access my Google Play “All Access” music on my home theater system, without having to plug in my phone, so this seems like it will solve that problem. Everything else in my house seems to already have Netflix, YouTube and Pandora access built in.

  • NexusMan

Also at Best Buy & Amazon.

  • I C Yoo

Why does the NSA care what i watch on my TV?

  • Andy

what do I get with plex on my Roku?

  • S2556

Can someone send one up to canada for me? not available up here :(

  • epps720

I actually bought 2, one for the living room and one for the bedroom and love it! I already have Netflix built into my DVD player but hadn’t noticed until recently the difference in quality. The quality on my Chromecast is 10x better (and quicker) than streaming from my DVD player. I was shocked!

Question – my wife has an iphone, does anyone know how to get the chromecast app on there. They don’t have the app in the app store.

    • ddh819

i see the app in itunes

    • skg

get your wife an android phone and problem solved :)

      • epps720

I agree, she used to have the incredible then wanted the iphone b/c “everyone else had one”

    • NexusMan

The app wasn’t there at launch, but ios just got an app maybe 2 weeks ago.

      • epps720

thanks, didn’t realize they finally came out with it.

  • Inspector Butters

Is anyone else having issues with casting tabs? I’ve had no issues using netflix and youtube, but I can’t get it to cast a chrome tab.

    • ddh819

works for me with my windows laptop

    • NexusMan

Works seamlessly on my iMac, but I got one for someone as a gift, and can’t get it to work on their Windows laptop.

  • EvanTheGamer

Question: I got a Samsung LED SmartTV a few weeks ago. Should I still buy a Chromecast even if I have a SmartTV?

    • Inspector Butters

      its $35. Yes.

    • ddh819

see if you can get the netflix or youtube app on a phone/tablet to play a video on the tv – might work for youtube at least. if so, that’s kinda what the chromecast does.

otherwise, if you have a 2nd tv, you could get it for that.

    • Andy

you can pair phone with samsung tv for youtube. works great.

  • Matthew Finco

I use it to watch and share youtube videos more than anything. But yes, I do still use it. Actually, I use it more than I expected to considering no additional apps have yet to add chromecast capability. :-( I’m frowning at you Plex. And I really, really, really want to chromcast my photos on my phone.

    • ddh819

yeah, i thought you could chromecast photo albums from g+ but doesn’t seem so yet

  • http://dasalehaus.wordpress.com/ Enzy

Constantly streaming Netflix with it, since I don’t have a PS3 or Xbox.

  • Mike Hilal

Netflix and Youtube work amazingly well…too bad nothing else does yet

    • http://www.mecha-digital.com/ Jason@MechaDigital

      this

    • PhoenixPath

Other than Google Play Music and Google Play Movies, you mean? ;-)

      • Mike Hilal

        Yes.

  • NexusPhan69

More importantly is that it’s back in stock with free shipping and tax free on Amazon again! Just got mine for exactly $35 total!

  • Tobias Fünke, M.D. Analrapist

Finally! Can’t wait to get my hands on that dongle!

  • King Lo

It’s been in stock online at Best Buy for weeks….

  • cns2007

“Chromecast owners, still using your dongle?”

Heck yes, almost daily with NetFlix.

  • Smeckle

Anybody else have any problems with the splash screen flickering and then subsequent random audio loss (3-4 seconds) during streaming? I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. Chromecast and router are right next to each other so it’s not like it’s a bad signal.

  • Travillion

This has been the best way for us to get Hulu on our TV. Hulu does not support GoogleTV, and the Hulu app on our blu-ray player is garbage. This has been easiest and most reliable (even tab casting), in the absence of an HTPC or Roku.

  • JohnPA2006

I just bought one now !!! Hooray , I am going to play with my dongle till it hurts !!!
For the price you would be crazy not to get one.
Ohh I cant wait to see all the things I am going to do with my dongle !!!

  • Ben Myton

I still use mine frequently. When we get a big group of friends together we enjoy watching YouTube clips. It is awesome that multiple people on Android or iOS can all queue up videos and see what’s coming up next!

I’ve bought a few for family members as well, they all seem to enjoy them.

  • Droid Ronin

I use it every week, streaming YouTube and NetFlix videos from my phone and tablet.

  • Jérôme Besnard

Just got mine this week. Love it! Even my wife who is technophobe asked me how to use it.

  • Mayoo

Maybe Canada will get some this time? (I don’t get my hopes too high)

  • starnovsky

I’m using mine almost daily to stream google music. Occasionally youtube.

  • David Salsburg

grrr. why cant i use my play store credit for this…..

    • CasperTFG

Play Store credit is only for content, not devices.

  • DKowalsky2

Use it all the time for Netflix, completely worth the purchase.

  • mcdonsco

I still don’t see a use for this in my setup (HTPC, Xbox etc)…Even on my alternate TV’s I’ve got an Xbox so no use there either…what am I missing?

    • middlehead

You’re not missing anything. The only things this does that you can’t with an Xbox are mirroring a Chrome window and accessing Google Play content. If you’ve already got an HTPC set up too, there’s nothing this does that you can’t already cover.

      • mcdonsco

That’s what I thought…Being the tech geek that I am though I still kind of want one, but for what…ehh, oh well…

        • middlehead

Knowing that I don’t need one at home for the same reasons you don’t, I might still get one later on when more apps support it; a friend got one because he travels a lot and this lets him keep Netflix handy wherever he goes without having to drag his Xbox or laptop out.

The day Vudu, CinemaNow, or Flixster enable casting and I can push my Ultraviolet collection through this while traveling is the day I buy one.

    • Daniel Russell

I have a 7 year old 360 that whirs like crazy when turned on. Netflix without the whirring is worth it.

    • starnovsky

Well, if you have HTPC then you have it all (except for using a phone as remote, probably).
However, not everybody whats to plug in computer to TV.

    • Matt R Carner

This is my situation, except instead of the Xbox, I have a 1st Gen Google TV on my alternate TV.

I bought two Chromecasts when they were released for the geek factor and the 6 free months of Netflix. :)

I don’t use either of them, and one I haven’t even taken out of the mailer it was shipped in.

Might give them to friends/family if I ever think about it.

  • j

I use mine a lot! youtube, netflix, and occasional tab browsing.

  • moelsen8

i’m playing with my dongle right now.

    • JamesU513

      Careful now

    • CasperTFG

      Excuse me?

    • EvanTheGamer

That’s way too personal for an online forum. Plus THINK about the children?!

      • middlehead

Maybe he IS thinking about the children :(

        • EvanTheGamer

That’s ahh…crossing the line there friend.

          • middlehead

I agree, he shouldn’t be thinking about children that way.

        • YankInDaSouth

          Friggin EWWW! LOL

          • michael arazan

My GF loves my dongle. Sometimes I can’t get her off of my dongle. I have to pull my dongle out just to take care of my own business. I think I’ll buy her her own dongle just so she doesn’t break mine using it constantly. And I’ll probably get her a chrome dongle too = P

    • blootz

chrome dongle is wack… the cx-919@ 70$ is way better if you can save up for it… it does everything the chrome does and 1,000 x more things. its a quad core 2gig DDR 4.2.2 with 1080p support and its one button push root is amazing for swapping ROMs… this is a real no brainer. and its even nicer if you have an air mouse w/keyboard easily an extra 12$ add on for easy control or just get the app that turns your phone into the controller. I use a live waterfall background, w/nova launcher, while playing music off my Google player act. while playing android games w/ an Xbox controller. try to do that with the chrome dongle.

      • blootz

oh yeah my chrome dongle is on sale 15$ like new only used once till my cx-919 came in and blew me away that no one else knows about it… the hd streaming of netflix and my nfl app is smooth no lag on the cx-919. chrome dongle has a little lag. if your in san diego hit me up. I will sell you my chrome dongle in full packaging 15$ out the door.

  • ßen Murphy

I use mine mostly at work. The breakroom is happy with watching Breaking Bad :)

  • Suralin

I finally got mine earlier this week. I’m enjoying the ability to watch vids without my computer hooked up to my tv. I just wish Amazon would release a vid app for its videos already so I can cast them.

    • Jeff Tycz

just cast it from your computer

      • Andres

You can cast a Chrome tab, but it’s not the same. I did try doing that while playing Hulu on that tab and I never got it to switch to HD (yet, I am unsure if it was because of the chromecast or because of my internet at that moment).

Plus, while casting that tab, the video won’t get into full screen unless you click full screen on your laptop, which makes your laptop unavailable for anything else.

        • DiegoKokomo

Click full screen on your computer/laptop and then alt+tab. You can still do whatever you want on your computer while the video remains full screen on your TV.

      • Adam Truelove

This works, technically, but you’ll get some frame loss and the video and audio probably won’t sync up quite right. Tab cast is great, but it’s not really meant for video. Would be cool if, when you hit full screen on video on the PC, the Chromecast would go out and grab the video directly and play it natively.

    • middlehead

Never gonna happen, not unless Amazon gives up on the Kindle Fire line. They might enable casting for their app on Fires, but that’s gonna be it.

  • Jeff Tycz

I use it every single day, stream NFL games from my PC to my TV. Best $35 I ever spent

    • DodgingDonkey

What site are you using for streaming? Anything in HD?

      • Fozzybare

nfl sunday ticket should work. i dont see why that wouldnt.

      • Bob G

Sunday ticket here! So easy and free :)

    • http://www.mecha-digital.com/ Jason@MechaDigital

I tried it with Gamepass but it worked poorly. There is pretty bad audio lag (not a big deal with NFL) but it was dropping frames like crazy, got the point where I was missing whole plays.

      • Andy

I’m trying to figure out what you did. you are using your chromecast or not?

        • http://www.mecha-digital.com/ Jason@MechaDigital

I was, but the tradeoff (loss of quality) wasn’t worth the benefit (lazy-man benefit of not having to get up and plug in the laptop).

YMMV, for me NFL was the only need I didn’t have covered already, and unfortunately my experience was casting tabs isn’t ready to meet my needs.

      • Jeff Tycz

I get pretty good quality when I cast, I think it has to do with the location of the laptop relative to the chromecast because when I have the laptop next to me watching tv its great quality except chromecast loses connection sometimes. However if I use my desktop in my other room the quality is bad and really choppy

  • Jon

The novelty has worn off for me with mine. Especially when I’m seeing Roku supporting local files and Google shutting Koush’s app out.

    • Alex

You can actually drag and drop most local files into chrome’s address bar…they magically start playing and then you cast that browser tab. Very little lag, too!

      • Jon

Thanks Alex. I was mainly speaking about streaming from by S4. I wish the Android chrome browser would was able to cast tabs.

        • T_Dizzle

I can’t get my Gnex to cast, is that a known thing? I ask because a co-worker can with his iFlop.

          • Jon

GNex not being able to is new on me.

          • T_Dizzle

Via Chrome on my Gnex, I’m unable to.

  • Justin Barrett

    In stock on Amazon too.

    • WAldenIV

My Amazon order was delivered this morning. I placed it about a month ago. I can’t wait to watch NBC Sports streaming coverage of the BPL this weekend.

  • CasperTFG

Picked up one yesterday at BB. Woohoo.

    • cgmartin33

Casper… what area did you find one at BB?

      • CasperTFG

        Northern Virginia

      • fauxshizzl

They have been piles available at my local BB since they went on sale.

        • Col_Angus

My Best Buy said they only get about 7 per shipment (about every week or so) and they sell out within two hours of restocking.

          • fauxshizzl

I rushed down to mine the second I saw they had them assuming the same scenario, but there were about 15-20 of them when I got there and have been since. But in its defense they have them on the bottom shelf of an end cap without so much as a sign or any type of promotion. I had to search to find them, the general public would never even know they exist.

          • Col_Angus

Yeah, mine are on a Google display with the Chromebooks on the main path between the outside entrance and the entrance to the mall, so it gets a lot of traffic.

      • Ben Myton
    • YankInDaSouth

      Me too! Absolutely loving it!!
