Kit Kat Android Statue Arrives on Google Campus, So Long Key Lime Pie

kitkat android

Android boss Sundar Pichai just revealed the new name of the next major version of Android – Kit Kat. Through a picture of a new statue on the Google campus lawn along with a note posted to Google+, Pichai said that he “can’t wait to release the next version of the platform that is as sweet as the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites.” In other words, goodbye Key Lime Pie – hello, Kit Kat.

We still don’t know if it will be Android 5.0 or 4.4 (it’s officially 4.4), but at least we can stop referring to it by the wrong name. We will more than likely see Kit Kat arrive some time around the end of October at a press event that should include the unveiling of new Nexus devices.

For those not familiar with the significance of the statue, just know that each major version of Android is represented by a statue outside of the Android team’s Google building. Whenever a new statue arrives, the new version of Android typically arrives shortly after. In the picture, you can see Gingerbread, Jellybean and Honeycomb.

He also mentioned that Android activations have now topped 1 billion, which is a pretty remarkable number.

Update: It is confirmed that Kit Kat will be Android 4.4.

  • RaptorOO7

Yup, someone paid BIG BUCKS to either get access to the name or a joint marketing effort by the candy company. I do like me some Kit Kat’s though.

  • Chippah

UK, US, Brazil, India, Japan and Russia. are all in.

  • deadpenguins

Oh crap, this wasn’t a joke? Wow..

  • Chippah

    GEE<- Are We BIASED? WTF?!

"Nestle has faced criticism in the past for the way it promoted powdered baby milk in the developing world. It has also had to recall numerous products, most recently bags of dog food following a salmonella scare in the US.

Google has also attracted controversy of its own, including a recent report from the US government suggesting that Android attracts more malware attacks than any other mobile OS."

  • Inquizitor

    This is depressing.

  • dmagicp

So 5.0 will be Lemon Meringue Pie

  • B Mont

    Next up… Android 5.0 Jujyfruits

  • Jonathan Contreras
  • jimmyf101

Does Sundar have a vested interest in Kit Kat/Nestle? It seems odd to have a brand name used for a project name that is so widely publicized as Android.
I’m cool with it, it just seems odd.

    • sr_erick

Nestle doesn’t have control of KitKat in the US, only internationally, so I think I’d be more concerned with Hershey as they have licencing to produce KitKat in the US.

But yes, it does seem odd to go from generic confectioneries to this branded approach. I wonder what they hope to gain, or who hopes to come out ahead more in this partnership?

      • Chippah

they are also doing the promotion in the UK as well,

  • Eric

I’m really speechless in disappointment and anger…

    • Indianajonze

why? do you have a vested interest in product code names?

      • Eric

I’m an android enthusiast like most people on this site.

        • Indianajonze

Ok, soooooo how does this codename choice dampen your enthusiasm in any way? The outrage makes no logical sense whatsoever

          • Eric

Because it makes android look stupid.

          • standardsdt

So basically you’re kicking and screaming because you can and because you believed rumors? Sounds like you’re taking this a little too personal. This definitely does not make it look stupid. Give me a break (pun intended).

          • Eric

Yes I’m “Kicking and screaming” because I believe rumors that I don’t pay attention to. Go try and convince someone to convert to android the second you say kitkat they will laugh.

          • standardsdt

You might as well make fun of Ice Cream Sandwich. Any time I mentioned that name people laughed and said that was dumb. The general public doesn’t care about the marketing. They just think “Oh that’s cool” or “Haha that name is dumb”.

For an Android Enthusiast it appears you’re taking a step backwards. Clearly you were aware of the Key Lime Pie and you got hooked on it. You really should learn how to keep low expectations with rumors. No shame in saying “Yeah I believed that.”

  • Gabriel

    1. Google has been known to make most of their revenue from Advertising.. So why do people think they “sold out”. Technically they have already.. And look at how much we love em anyways

    2. KitKat is now my favorite candy.

    3. Who the f@#$ cares what its called… As long as the OS is kick ass.

    Win win win for everybody.

  • yummy

Oh Andy. I keep trying to leave,
but every time I get to the door,
you always lure me back. You know
I cant resist Kit Kats. Yummy.

  • KB

Dammit! I’d take a Key Lime pie over a Kit Kat any day.

  • Trueblue711

Anyone else wondering if the announcement was originally to be Android 5.0 under Key Lime Pie? I’m wondering if they decided to change the name and announce 4.4 because it’s been a while since the original JB release and they aren’t ready to release 5.0 yet, for whatever reasons.

    • joejoe5709

Very possible. Let’s hope it’s not in vain, the next version is nearly bug free, and Kit Kat is a worthy update.

  • Joshua Bailey

What a strange turn of events we have here…

  • I dont know, it could just be overthinking but the first commercialized code name of Android doesnt seem like a good thing to me.

    • enigmaco

Think of the ad revenue they can generate with this though.

  • Jackson

Break me off a piece of that android bar!

  • Robert Macri

I hope the kids who arrive at my door on Halloween like Kit Kats… That’s all they are getting.

    Now get off my lawn!

    • MacNificent

Well I’m stuck on 4.1.2 on Verizon gs3. I’ll have my kitkat now please.

  • enigmaco

I wonder if Key Lime Pie is not done, and they are releasing this in the meantime, I mean the name key lime pie wasn’t pulled out of the air there was a reason.

    • joejoe5709

Maybe Key Lime Pie was the “working title” and then the ad execs cooked up the idea of a Kit Kat collaboration.

      • enigmaco

I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of key lime pie, my android senses are tingling.

        • joejoe5709

Well… unless we’re being trolled somehow… Or if Google Glass/the supposed smartwatch will run off of Key Lime Pie I think KLP is pretty much done.

The next version of Android should start with an “L” such as Licorice or some other commercial name that escapes me at the moment. Then again, who knows. Google continues to surprise us. 🙂

          • While I agree. The initials KLP are much cooler than KK… IMHO

          • Erica C.

Lemonhead(s), Lifesaver(s)? Alternatively, I would vote for Lolliop.

          • enigmaco

            Google punk’d us lol

  • Fresh360

Google has trolled us over and over again, I love it lol…

  • Chris Bailey

Wow – considering the small number of people who actually CARE about the os NAME (i.e. Android nerds such as us reading this blog), I find it hard to believe they were able to push this as a marketing move to a candy company. Also – ugh, so cheesy and awful Google… Could crap like this be why people have been bailing the Android dev team?

  • asianrage

I LOVE Kit Kat. Definitely one of my favorite sugary treats.

Was KeyLimePie ever a an actual name, or did everyone just settled on it?

  • joejoe5709

WHOA! I never ever once considered Kit Kat or anything else trademarked. Why not Krispy Kreme? Lol. Honestly… I think I’ll feel a little silly saying, “I just updated to Kit Kat.” or “Hey is your phone running Kit Kat?” And Krispy Kreme would not have helped that situation. Plus we’ve already had Donut and Eclair so…

Android 4.4 is also a shocker. I would have bet money on a 5.0. Let’s hope 4.4 brings some fairly major refinements to 4.2.2/4.3 but I highly doubt it’s going to fundamentally differ much from ICS/JB.

    • anezarati

yeah, i think the biggest announcement here is that it will be labeled as 4.4 and not 5.0, not the whole kitkat stuff

      • joejoe5709

Right. Because this almost implies a mostly incremental update still based off of ICS instead of a total revamp like many were hoping for. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. ICS/JB in no way feels outdated or under-powered. I’m more than happy with some major refinements while they work on the next major update. More importantly, I have no fear that Android will continue to compete with iOS and WP despite the lack of an overhaul.

    • Robert Macri

Surprised its not AT LEAST 4.5 – but then I guess it would be weird to just skip 4.4

      • joejoe5709

That would be weird. But weirder things have happened I suppose.

    • Fresh360

Unless you’re talking to one of us, Android Geeks, you would have sounded silly saying “I upgraded my phone to Key Lime Pie” as well. These silly things is one of the reasons I love Google products.

  • ReturnOfTheMack

Xiaomi must have bribed Hugo with Key Lime Pies…

  • Jeff C

Now i want a Kit Kat

    • Franklin Ramsey

As do I and the vending machines at work are all out of them. What’s a guy to do…

      • MacNificent

        wait for the update!

  • Ben

This version of Android brought to you with promotional considerations by KitKat

  • Godzilla

  • Anthoni

I’m surprised that they were able to keep this a secret, it seems like anything Android is leaked now.

  • bkosh84

Even better? They have the Kit Kat Logo on the statue.. Wonder how much in royalties that cost them, lol.

    • Ian

Probably nothing. I guess this day in age companies cannot simply cross-promote without money exchanging hands…

  • joseph barrientos

mixed reactions but i think this is brilliant, contest, more android exposure, and a yummy snack, count me in!

  • Omar Amer

Im curious on how they can pull this off. Considering Kit Kat is a brand of chocolate covered wafers.

  • ddevito

Will it have a golden ticket to win a tour of the chocolate factory?!

  • enigmaco

Give me liberty or give me key lime. kit kat, whoppers, reeses.

  • Shamu

Google just stole some of Apple’s thunder today

  • John Davids

I’m wondering how much Nestle paid for this. First time I have seen a trademarked name as the official Android OS name. In fact, its because of trademarks that they went to generic dessert names instead of trademarked robot names like R2-D2 and Bender.

    • breadable

Nestle is actually a bigger (or richer… and certainly more chocolaty) company than Google, so it was probably nothing to them. Likely a genius cross promotion with a win for both

  • Mike

cool story, now fix multitouch on the new nex7… *crosses arms*

  • TheRobotCow

Please fanboys avoid this comment. You’re too stupid to think.
Now i gotta wait to see this to see whether i get the next nexus or the new iphone.

    • Perv Bear

You dont HAVE to wait. Get both, be a real man

      • TheRobotCow

        Hmmmm….. That’s actually not a bad idea

      • breadable

        I’m waiting for Lemionheads

  • tony

Gimme a Break! Gimme a Break! Break me off a piece of that……. (Fill in the blank).

  • Mike Arnett

Between that and the Nexus 4 price drop…. New Nexus incoming!!

  • Robert Macri

    Android for everybody? Uniform upgrades?

  • Drome

it seems odd that we already have the statue. Don’t they normally announce the new features and OS before putting up a new statue?

    • Franklin Ramsey

Nope, they usually have the new statue about a week or two before they announce.

  • jt O’Brien

This is the first time we’ve been wrong isn’t it? Google pulled a good ol’ switcheroo on us!

    • BiggiePhat

      …as per sarge

    • Raj Bhatt

No, the whole Android community thought that 2.2 was for sure gonna be “Flan”. So we’ve definitely been wrong before haha.

  • htowngtr

Still debating whether or not to open this Nexus 4 that arrives tomorrow or just send it back to Google.

    • Perv Bear

Well it will get Kit Kat, so keep it!

      • htowngtr

Yea, but I have HTC One already (AT&T) and I have great LTE signal. Just debating if it’s worth it.

  • hfoster52

    Holy Cross over….

  • Character0

I guess Klondike Bar was too close to Ice Cream Sandwich.

  • kurichan

    hi-res kitkat wallpaper for all!

  • anezarati

where can i get one of these android branded kit kat bars?

  • ChrisNacca

    its android 4.4

  • addicuss

now people are going to flip out about how android is becoming too “commercial” or how andy the robot sold out.

    • Ian

Only the extremists. And that’s just because its what they do.

  • james

Man… I wanted them to be in version 5.0
Anywhere in the 4.x just now seems weak and old for some reason…
