Verizon’s New DROID ULTRA Commercial Shows Off Strength, Touchless Control, in NYC Cab Chase

YouTube Preview Image

Don’t worry, there are no explosions, ninja robot women, or motorcycles in this chase scene. Instead, a man leaves his DROID ULTRA inside an NYC cab, and then proceeds to chase it through the park to hunt it down. The phone, as you would expect while in the possession of a lunatic cabbie, is bounced from door-to-door and window-to-window. Of course, no damage is inflicted, but the owner is only able to find it in the end by saying, “OK, Google Now, call my DROID.”

Our ULTRA review should arrive any day. In the mean time, read about all of its features in our Moto X review. (Seriously, same software.)

Did you pick up an ULTRA or MAXX today?

  • Paula C.

I think Droid should pull this commercial off the air with the Taxi Cab, in light to the tourist accident created by a taxi driver, I’m sure with her trauma, seeing this run over & over as commerical will bring nightmares to her. I find it very offensive & just plain stupid advertising.

  • Brian

What is the name of the song in this commercial?!

  • Rich Congiu

The new droid maxx is the best phone out there. I upgraded from the maxx hd and this phone is just incredible. camera is great, speaker phone is nice and loud, built tough, battery obviously a plus, ok google now!!!! works while my phone is in pocket or clipped on my belt while in its case.

  • Seldomever

Isn’t this a rather insensitive ad given the recent incident in NYC involving a British tourist and a taxi driver who could have auditioned for this ad?

  • Jonny Boy

Can anyone tell me the name of the song that plays in this commercial?

    • SammySoCal

      Brukpocket’s Lament
      “The Heavy”

  • Alexander Garcia

I’m getting’ one (Maxx) tomorrow! =)

  • renaldoblee

    I make
$82h while I’m traveling the world. Last week I worked by my laptop in Rome,
Monti Carlo and finally Paris…This week I’m back in the USA. All I do are
easy tasks from this one cool site. check it out,www.Pro67.ℂom

  • Hatyrei

Ok Google now. I got home. Drive my phone back. :P

  • NorCalGuy

Is there going to be white variants of the ultra or the maxx?

  • Kylene

The SONG is by The Heavy – “Brukpocket’s Lament”

    Enjoy!

  • Sporttster

Moto screwed the pooch not including a sd slot. I’ve owned only Moto phones but that ends with this line…..

  • speraider430

I don’t care about exclusive phones anymore. That business model may have worked for the LG EnV but it is terribly outdated when everyone wants their Galaxy/One/X devices as soon as they are launched.

Or at least as soon as their friends have them….

  • Scott Strool

Anybody know away to get out of paying the upgrade activation fee? I feel I’m giving them money for nothing. If you already have Google music all access can it be added to your account? Thanks

  • Melissa McClain-Bull Tupperwar

I have been searching all over the internet to find the artist and name of the song used in the cab video. Please share it with people so the artist can get the credit and we can enjoy their hard work. thanks :)

  • kixofmyg0t

Welp, I guess i can officially say I’m loving my MAXX. This is the smartest “smartphone” I’ve ever owned.

The only bad thing about having a MAXX, and going from MAXX to MAXX is you’re used to great battery life already. So it’s not that impressive of a jump. Going from 7 to 9 hours on screen time isn’t as impressive as it would be if I had come from any other phone. Owning a MAXX kinda spoils you for battery life.

  • CapnShiner

This post was about the Droid Ultra and all anyone is talking about is the Droid Maxx. *sigh*

I thought this ad was pretty dumb. Now, I don’t live in NYC, but I assume that cab drivers do not drive like that. They would be ticketed/arrested and lose their license/job. It’s not even a good demonstration of the phone’s durability because most surfaces inside a car are pretty soft and the amount of force making the phone slide and bounce around would be relatively low. The end of the ad that shows off the voice commands is also unrealistic because there is no way the phone would pick up his voice from within a cab on a busy NYC street with the window closed and he wouldn’t be able to hear it ring even it worked. I know advertisements are not always realistic but this one doesn’t even accomplish what it’s supposed to. I hope their next ad is better.

    • LiterofCola

Actually, the voice controls are frickin’ awesome. My wife was trying to talk to it, but it only responded when I did.

    • shay

They may not drive over street dividers….but NYC cabs do drive like they are crazy, hate to break it to you….

  • anon

Just bought my MAXX….waiting for it to charge before I migrate from my Bionic.

Also found VZW has a SKU for an OEM car dock. It shall be mine, when it ships.

    • ROB

      Do tell?

      • Anon

I am loving my MAXX, 12 hours later.

Yes, a VZW employe indicated the presence of the SKU for the car dock, but that none were available yet.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

it’s just that….the moto x dev support is gunna be sick.

  • everettedl

Ok…I really don’t get the point of this commercial.

  • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

If a developer ever finds a way to easily make the voice response sound like JARVIS, I will be fighting over one of these!

  • ajftl250

extremely stupid commercial .. and the voice…

  • Malcolm Love

Did anyone ever find out if the Maxx/Ultra have the MIMO LTE radio like the X does? I’ve already ordered a MAXX from wirefly, but I’m curious.

    • jnt

also will it support Verizon’s AWS spectrum once released I wonder? I read the X won’t… or maybe that’s what you’re referring to and I’m just ignorant? :)

      • Malcolm Love

After a quick Google search, the DROIDs MIGHT be. I say might cause every article I saw mentioned that the S4 should be the first with a software update, and one mentioned that Verizon stated that every 4G phone going forward should be so who knows…

        • jnt

I guess it’s no big deal regardless. LTE is fast in and of itself, and the AWS spectrum should help clear up some of the more clogged areas now anyway. We’ll see I guess!

    • James_75

FCC filings apparently show similar arrays but the jury is still out.

    • kixofmyg0t

      Yes it does.

      • James_75

        Source?

  • Brian

Pre-ordered my Ultra over the weekend.

But here’s my question. Do you have to use the phrase, “OK, Google Now?” Because I want to train my phone to wake up when it hears, “Open the pod bay doors, Hal.”

    • Jordan Webb

      You cannot change the phrase.

      • James_75

        Not yet…. :)

        • n900mixalot

          baka Shinji

      • DJ SPY

Lisa at mobile tech review mentioned in her review that you could. She was probably wrong. She also said the Ultra gets 8 hours of on screen battery life.

  • hatboysam

Just got the Maxx today. Its incredible so far. No lag whatsoever, big bright screen, and all features are working great. Motorola seriously stepped up their game last year. I’ve previously owned a Droid 1, Droid 2, GNex, and now this. This is the first one where I seriously believe its as quick as the iPhone and has a decent battery.

    • Jeremy B.

yeah no thanks, i think i’ll be
better off never hearing the “drrrrrooooidddd” every time my phone
        malfunctions and self-restarts.

    • TheRobotCow

      Awesome!

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Quick question, if you use polarized sun glasses can you still see the screen? Some phones are weird where you absolutely cannot see the screen but others aren’t as bad.

      • hatboysam

Sorry no idea. Don’t have glasses to test.

      • jnt

another comment on here says you can, especially a lot better than the S4, and specifically with polarized glasses

      • James_75

I can answer this with a definitive YES! I hated having to take my sunglasses off to see my S4 screen. Those days are over with the Maxx.. I can see it just fine now!

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Thanks, it really is a pain in the butt to be constantly taking off sunglasses just to see your notifications or reply to a text!

      • LiterofCola

Trying it right now, no problem seeing the screen

    • n900mixalot

So why the Droid instead of the X?

      • hatboysam

I really wanted to convince myself to get the X, but in the end I couldn’t turn down 32GB, a way better battery, and some free Google music for an extra $99. Plus I have big hands.

      • BeejRich

I picked up the Maxx today simply for battery. The guy at the Verizon store tried to push the Moto X on me, but I knew what I wanted before I even walked in.

        • blackjaguar25

That’s completely ass-backwards of what any other person on here would expect.

          • Eric

            Yeah, surprised about that.

          • BeejRich

The Verizon stores in my area suck. The associates show no enthusiasm what so ever and seem like they’re only there for a paycheck. I really feel bad for people that don’t know anything and are forced to take their advice.

          • T4rd

Well if they’re pushing the Moto X over the iPhone or Droids, I can’t say that’s bad advice, hah.

          • LiterofCola

            That’s every Verizon store

        • DCABuckeye

Yes, except there is no Moto X to push at you. So the commissioned Verizon salesperson tried to walk a sale; sure.

    • DCABuckeye

Ditto everything, and add that very cool Active Display, Okay, Google Now and Motorola Migrate work flawlessly. The handoff from wifi to 4g and back is smooth as silk. Didn’t have time to get a full charge, but having it on battery for five hours tinkering and playing, I was still at 50% come bedtime. My GNex would have had me pop the battery or demanded tethering to a socket to get anywhere near this. Love this phone. And please, to those who actually haven’t come physically near this phone yet, please save me your Verizon venom.

      • DCABuckeye

Update: Fully charged 100% at 6:45 a.m. EST. Pretty moderate use with a
number of emails, Starbucks, facebook, a bunch of texts, and some other
        tasks. 84% remaining at 12:45 p.m. est.

    • LiterofCola

I’m with you, I absolutely love this phone. Like you said, no lag, great screen, FANTASTIC battery. I’m using Apex over the UI and used this baby heavily (Maxx) all day and it lasted waaaay longer than my Razr Maxx ever did. And it just feels good in hand with the soft back. The only complaint I have is I wish the capacitive buttons would fade to black when not in use.

    • Ryan

As quick as the iphone? What isn’t…

  • huskerhog

How does the voice activation work on a phone that is in sleep mode? No bluetooth device is observable.

    • Godzilla

because the mic on the phone is always on

    • Jordan Webb

The phone has a microcontroller (not a full CPU) dedicated to listening for your voice delivering the activation phrase. It actually works really well.

The “call my droid” bit ends up trying to “call lloyd” or “call medury” more often than actually calling the Droid, though.

  • jnt

The big question… can Moto or Verizon pay to have this commercial in mainstream locations and during primetime TV??

  • jer85008

Pre-ordered my MAXX yesterday. $199 on Wirefly, out the door – no tax/shipping. I know the Moto X is more sexy, but I can’t pass on the larger screen and battery at essentially the same price. Zero interest in the G2, GS4, or Note III. Considered the One, until I played with it and came away unimpressed with the speakers and Sense 5. I have no unlimited data to protect, so contract price saves me money (also get a nice corporate discount with Verizon, so abandoning my plans to jump ship for another few years).

    • n900mixalot

      Nice, do whatcha love.

    • Biverson

Why have I not heard of this ‘Wirefly’ before? Seems to good to be true! Maxx for $199 vs $299? Yes please!

  • Jordan Webb

PIcked up a Maxx today. It improves on the Gnex in every way that matters to me.

    • Under the bridge downtown

Care to expand? I have a GNex too and am thinking of this.

      • jose

It’s not the Gnex. Not much more expanding needed.

      • Jordan Webb

Screen is better, battery is better, signal is better, it’s faster, it looks like AOSP with a few minimal features (all useful) added on, and it feels better in hand.

        • James_75

Agreed. Since the Gnex I’ve owned the Bionic, DNA, the S4 and now the Maxx, all of which were better experiences than I had with the Gnex’s battery life, screen performance, fluidity of UI, and radio performance. One of the main reasons I dumped the S4 is because of signal strength and quality and the rear speaker sucked ass as well. The Maxx is easily twice as loud.

          • Jordan Webb

Yeah, the Gnex really turned me off of Samsung, which is why I’ve been waiting all summer for something other than the S4 to show up.

          • James_75

            Grab a Maxx, you’ll be happy :)

          • Jordan Webb

Already did. This thread began with me saying I grabbed one.

          • James_75

Sorry, I sort by “Best”, not time of posts.

    • Jeremy B.

wait so i can walk out of my local verizon store with the maxx in my hand rather than waiting for my stupid pre order to ship?

      • Jordan Webb

        Yup.

        • Jeremy B.

if you dont mind me asking what state r u in?

          • Jordan Webb

            Neeebraska. Yee haw.

Omaha, specifically. Lots of Verizon stores around, but I just went to the closest one to me and they had plenty. I should mention that Verizon is very dominant in this area thanks to being the only good player in town for about 4 years.

          • jnt

ok this might seem like a dumb question, but how’s the vibration? is it real tight? or real loosy-goosy? lol… I hated the cheap feeling vibration of the original razr’s…

          • Jordan Webb

I…don’t really know? That’s probably something you’ll have to pick up yourself, since I don’t really know what you mean.

          • jnt

Sorry, it was a dumb question… the S4’s vibration is real tight, but some phones when they vibrate, it’s more “loose” and more like a fast rattle than a vibration. Don’t worry about it, it didn’t really deserve a response since I should just look myself. :)

          • James_75

Coming from an S4 myself…. The vibrations are stronger/more in your face than the S4 and are customizable on the Maxx. I couldn’t feel the S4 vibrate in my pocket half the time it seemed. The speaker is night and day louder as well. You also get, IMO, much better ringtone and notification sounds to choose from… (totally subjective of course).

          • LiterofCola

Feels good to me, you can select different styles of vibration too

          • James_75

Central High ’93.. Go Eagles! ;)

      • James_75

I canceled both my pre-orders and walked in and bought them directly this morning.. Minneapolis area… The store employees can cancel the order as you stand there.

  • MichaelFranz

i went and looked at them today. Must say the Ultra is super thin. feels nice, just lacks that battery and matte finish, the thing is a finger print electro magnet….i might have been one of the only ones to look at it besides the employees and it was covered.

One thing i noticed which i didnt like was that the carbon fiber on the maxx on the corners wasnt complete, might of been because of the demo unit.

I want to want this phone. i really do. But i think its wait for X, see what Note 3 offers if anything, and maybe see if HTC pushes anything before xmas. Unless the phone gets unlocked and rooted im on board

I say nexus but its a shot in the dark and highly unlikely….like a unicorn

    • jnt

The corners were like that across the board according to the rep at my location. I haven’t seen one out of the box, but he acted like that was normal. I didn’t like it either…

      • Jordan Webb

        It’s across the board.

        • jnt

Thanks. It makes the corners look worn to me. But it by no means would keep me from choosing the Maxx over the Ultra.

          • Rich Congiu

I keep mine in a case with the belt clip, still remains thin and light, has a great feel,, just an awesome phone

    • James_75

I bought two today and both are like that. It seems like there may be more “rubber” on the corners to deal with wear better. So far I love everything about this phone (coming from an S4) except the narrow seam between the glass and the plastic case already has little pieces of debris lodged in there.. this will drive me crazy until I can get a bumper installed to cover it.

      • jnt

Have you played with the camera much yet? That’s my biggest concern in dumping the S4 for the Maxx…

        • MichaelFranz

i took some in store shots, camers seemed ok, i didnt get a chance to compare it to my razr hd

          • Justin W

You should go back and compare it to the HTC One once they release that (for low-light comparisons, which the new Moto camera is supposed to be really good with).

          • jnt

In my playing in the store earlier it definitely seemed faster and better than the Razr HD, for whatever that might be worth… but I haven’t had a Razr HD in awhile, so maybe an update improved it.

        • James_75

Camera software does not have as many bells/whistles as the S4 but I actually like the simplicity of it. It appears to be the basic/stock Android camera controls sans photosphere. I believe there are a lot of camera apps out there to give you more options but, to be honest, I never really used the S4’s extras anyway… but that’s just me.

Oh, and it takes so/so images… nothing special imo.

          • jnt

what about picture quality though? I’m sure you haven’t had time to really mess with that, but I gotta ask anyway… :) I liked the UI and the speed, but I’ve gotten some incredible “on the fly” shots of my kids with the S4 and I fear the Moto camera in those situations, based solely on history…

          • James_75

I still have my S4 so I’ll have to take some side by side images and compare them.

          • James_75

Here is a Picasa collage comparing the two cameras. These were taken with both cameras in HDR mode as that is my preferred mode. I have not modified/enhanced them at all in Picasa.

Maxx on left, S4 on Right.

            https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B39_cgL4MnilOUE1bnBjMG1EV0k/edit?usp=sharing

          • jnt

Pretty darn good – thanks for going to that trouble.

          • Justin W

Nice place dude. You must like rock gardens or live in a dry area.

          • James_75

Thanks Justin. I live just north of Minneapolis.

          • Daeshaun Griffiths

uhm, is it just me or does the maxx do a slightly better job than the s4? because i like all the pictures on the left more.

          • JasonS

Thank you for the comparison. Are the Maxx photos on the left side of the collage?

          • Charlie R.

Wait, the Ultra/Maxx camera doesn’t have Photosphere?

          • Jordan Webb

Only the Nexus devices have photosphere, IIRC.

          • James_75

Not that I can see, No. Standard Panorama yes, PS, no.

          • Charlie R.

That’s a downer. I guess I’ll just have to use my new Nexus 7 if I want to do that. Thanks!

  • samosa king

    dat 720p strength

    • MichaelFranz

its not that bad. i held it up to an S4, not a noticeable difference with full brightness. even played a youtube video. slightly more crisp on the s4, but this isnt a slacker by any means. the display is gorgeous for 720p

    • James_75

Coming from an S4 here and I can’t tell much difference in PPI except when I look at the S4 through polarized sunglasses I can barely see the screen outside even at full brightness. The Maxx screen doesn’t do this at all so the win goes to the Maxx for me.

      • Justin W

Polarized sun glasses do work on anything that’s glass, it seems like. I had tinted windows in my old car, and I’d see rainbows everywhere with them. My HTC One’s LCD is practically off when I am wearing my sunglasses as well, so it’s good to hear the Maxx’s screen is much better with this (I’m getting the Moto X, so hopefully it’s similar in that respect).

        • James_75

Yep, first thing I checked when I got outside the store.. was so happy that I don’t have to take my sungalsses off anymore to see my screen

  • Mike

    That was pretty cool.

  • Jeremy B.

didn’t you already do an ULTRA review? Now all that’s left is the MAXX review right?

    • Alanis

Isn’t the MAXX an ULTRA with a larger battery?

If so, I imagine that the review will say, “The MAXX is an ULTRA with better battery life.” I’m just saying.

      • Justin W

He’ll likely do a review on the battery life, but I doubt it would be a full review. The only differences between the two are:
        1. Wireless Charging in the Maxx (not in the Ultra)
        2. Battery Size (I think it’s 2200mAh in the Ultra, 3500mAh in the Maxx?)
        3. Storage (16Gb vs. 32Gb)

        • Jeremy B.

yea im really curious/excited to find out how long that sexy MAXX battery life lasts on “normal usage” as told by Motorola……we all know how that goes right? lol

          • LiterofCola

            It lasts a loong time

    • Jordan Webb

He didn’t actually do an Ultra review yet. Just an unboxing.

    • ROB

      That would be phone dog..

  • Nathaniel Newman

Now if you could call into the Droid and find it. Wait they have apps like that!

  • KleenDroid

    Amazing

  • emoney

yeah no thanks, i think i’ll be better off never hearing the “drrrrrooooidddd” every time my phone malfunctions and self-restarts.

    • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

They retired the “drroooiid” sound, I believe, so you should be good.

      • emoney

i’ve been out of the know with my 3 year old incredible

      • Jordan Webb

It’s available as an option as a notification, but it’s not the default. I think they called it “Vintage Droid” or something.

      • MichaelFranz

i still like it, makes iSheep cringe

        • Jordan Webb

I think it makes everyone cringe.

          • MichaelFranz

haha yea you have a point

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I actually kinda like it, definitely hard to miss when in a loud setting especially since my Droid Razr always decides to have the notification volume at 100%

          • Blue Sun

I tossed that file on my GNex & use it as a text notification sound. Sorta hard to miss it.

          • LionStone

Hah, my dad has his RAZR set as a text notification, pretty funny but he likes it!

          • NexusMan

            Me too.

      • Evan Knofsky

My Moto Razr still plays the drrooooiid sound when starting up if my phone isn’t on vibrate

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I still have it as my notification tone! Heck all the Droids I’ve seen around town still have the Droid ringtone!

          • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

You and @EKnofsky:disqus are both talking about older Droids, I’m talking about these new ones. As stated above, it is no longer the default tone.

Why not? That’s my G-Voice notification on my G-Nexus and that’s what I mainly use for texting…Can’t get enough of it…..Many think that I still have the OG Droid when they hear it….lol

There is still a lot of people who have that as their default! I was waiting at Tire Kingdom the other day and there was literally 4 other people in the waiting room with that as their ringtone and they were all texting (it kinda got annoying but it was pretty funny).

well i rather hear 4 droids saying “DROID” than to here 4 samsung birds whistling over and over

That’s an odd reason not to get it…

because i had a bad experience with my previous droid, so the idea of getting a new one doesn’t appeal to me?
