Verizon Posts Trailer for New Augmented Reality Game D:COM – DROID Combat, Disappointing is an Understatement

YouTube Preview Image

Yesterday, Verizon and @DroidLanding began teasing some sort of augmented reality game called D:COM – DROID Combat that involved warrior robots. In the past, we have seen nothing but contests for either current or upcoming devices from this Twitter account, some of which included augmented reality. So with little information available, other than a leaked .apk for the game that was posted into our comments almost immediately yesterday afternoon, we were hoping that Verizon would find a way to tie-in a new phone launch or contest with the release of this game. Why wouldn’t they, right? They couldn’t possibly tease for two days and then only announce a terrible augmented reality game that no one would play, would they?

With the official trailer for the game now posted to Verizon’s YouTube account, we’re now leaning towards that being the case. Again, we knew Verizon was launching an augmented reality game called D:COM – DROID Combat, but if there is no contest or new phone to help push this game, we’re 100% confused. This game looks awful. What’s the point in even producing something like this if you aren’t going to couple it with a reason (that being a contest or phone launch) for people to use it? Isn’t the point of poorly made and themed apps to use them alongside campaigns for new products? Ugh.

If there is one last line of hope, you’ll see in the trailer at the 57-second mark a mention of “90 days to domination.” Maybe something worth talking about will happen then? Oh, and the app will officially be made available tomorrow.

For now, file D:COM in the same place as Viva Movil. We just got J-LO’d.

I saw this coming down the road a mile away. Verizon is run by morons and anything that would come from this government shill of a company would be utter trash. Once I saw a “promo” from verizon my first instinct was “wow, this will be a pile of $h1t.” Pretty sad.

  • Yannick Mark Perryman

Maybe it’s because my expectations were already incredibly low, but i actually think this game might be kinda fun once it’s done :)

  • RoadsterHD1

so September release of the X-Phone high end to “Dominate” all others.
    I like it!!!!

“They couldn’t possibly tease for two days and then only announce a terrible augmented reality game that no one would play, would they?”

Says the guy standing down (er guard, sorry) at the pier pointing his phone at the sky!

My theory is that the Butterfly S will be rebranded as the DROID DNA+ and made a prize for winning this AR competition. And I suggest you all call **DROID from your Android or iOS smartphone: you’ll experience some interesting, half-completed competition link through SMS to the Play Store/App Store to an undownloadable app (broken link on iOS)

  • Michael Nyitrai

lol this is good, love the pr stunt, its a joke……..right?

    • joejoe5709

This. This is exactly what I was thinking. They sure got us talking about it, right? Heck… I can see it now in the VZW marketing meeting:

      *Snicker Snicker*
Yea yea yea let’s do that. Make a terrible game that no one wants to play but we’ll plaster Droid all over it. And you know what?! Let’s name of the robots after a prominent Droid site admin and get him all riled up about it. That’ll get them to read it! I mean… we’ve made terrible misleading commercials with people crushing concrete walls and renaming Google Now/Voice Search as Droid Recognition – why not this? Trolling people has worked pretty well so far! Darn right it has!!

Sadly, after the whole J-LO incident of 2013, this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

This is worse than their big push for using “Color”, which failed miserably and is out of business now.

  • 18footJ

Patience young grasshopper. An official phone announcement will come any day now.

    • CrownedChild

I don’t think there will be one. A contest maybe, but why launch a game that includes an iphone version for a Droid phone?

      • Rithvik Rao

Because Verizon officially supports and sells iPhones…

  • CrownedChild

Droid Combat, because we’ve pushed the Droid name so hard lately…
And….D:Com Alpha because Apple with sue our pants off if we try to put anything with “Droid” on an iphone.

  • Scott

Maybe they’re saying that Kellex (the robot) has a terrible, augmented reality. O.o

  • DRoyDown007

Wow first the Viva Movil announcement, now this! They are totally crushing it this year!!

  • jhouk

    “90 days to domination”?

I think they’re referencing the date when the G-Nex NE2 contracts start to expire…

    • Craig Huffman

GNex first available upgrade is August 15; first contracts expire December 15. No NE2 available for the GNex for anyone.

    • Higher_Ground

yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has something to do with VZW deciding to change contract conditions for everyone on an unlimited contract and either force them to change carriers or hop on tiered data. They waited until we dwindled down enough in numbers to finally be considered fully expendable. :(

Oh, and takes an age to load on the HTC One, ffs. I don’t even want to imagine the load-times for this thing on my Galaxy Nexus…

With the halfway point of 2013 just under two weeks away, is it fair to call Verizon’s year anything but disappointing?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I’m sure they’ll report another amazing quarter in July at their next earnings call, but from a consumer standpoint – yes, this has been a terrible year.

      • Blue Sun

If I was a VZ shareholder I might pretty happy with the 16% stock growth (YTD) & 2 $0.52/share dividends to date compared to AT&T’s 5% growth & no dividends (YTD).

        • Anthony_Armando

Own both AT&T and Verizon Communications stock; T issues dividends quarterly at a higher yield than VZ. VZ was really able to capitalize with smartphones and the always connected (read: stable/reliable connection) mentality of American life which has been great for investors.

      • hkklife

Not just VZW–arguably the worst year ever for Android. The One is a semi-lackluster device, as is the S4. We have not had A SINGLE worthwhile Android tablet this year and we also had the worst I/O ever. No new N7 or N10 and not even a whiff of 4.3. No Tegra 4 devices either.

        • Sirx

Well, when you put it like that……you’re absolutely right *cries in the corner*

        • michael arazan

I thought I/O was for developers, not consumers, It looked like a win for developers, especially all those trying to work on glass

        • Jordan

Whats wrong with the One or the S4?

          • flosserelli

He is probably butthurt and stuck with an older phone for another year. If you can’t find something to like about the One or S4, then you’re just SOL.

          • [[[...babysmoker...]]]

There’s nothing WRONG with them, there’s just nothing WOW about them. Speaking as someone who lives to customize every facet of my device experience (yes, i recognize that I do not represent the majority of smartphone users), I’ve been rocking my GNex since launch & aside from the abysmal battery life I still have yet to find a reason to upgrade

          • ToddAwesome

Agreed. Even with an upgrade on the horizon I’m not tempted at all by the S4 or One, still waiting to see what the NEXT big thing will be. Ever since getting the extended battery (which fits under the stock cover btw) I’ve had a renewed love for my GNex!

That’s incorrect. Verizon has switched to “share fails” plans for up to ten devices. Share 50 MBS of fail starting @ $59.99 month and an additional $10 for each device.
