Live: Google I/O 2013 Day 1 Keynote

google io2013-1

And we’re live from Google I/O 2013! Today’s 3-hour long keynote starts at 9AM Pacific (noon Eastern) and should feature more announcements involving Android and Chrome than you can possibly imagine. We’ve already seen the new Google Maps go live (briefly), so we know that’s coming. But after that, we could see a unified messaging service, Android 4.3, new gaming center, and more. It’s going to be a long keynote, but potentially the best one ever.

We have a liveblog and video embed below for your viewing pleasure. We’ll open the liveblog at 8AM Pacific, as we’ll be inside the Moscone Center, waiting in line, snapping pics and sharing the experience. Join us!

  • all i want is a Verizon Nexus 4 or possibly a galaxy s4 Google edition that would be sweet i’d go with the S4 GE only if it was updated like a nexus

    • Steve Benson

Don’t hold your breath for Verizon, you’ll die.

      • that’s why i root then rom lol but a S4 pure Google would be great

        • Steve Benson

Yeah, if true, it will be GSM only.

  • Tim242

I hope this rumor of a stock S4 running 4.3 is true. Bionic will jump off of a bridge if this is announced, and no X Phone in sight.

    • Bionic

that is definitely a killer move by Samsung

  • Tim242

Putting YouTube on my Samsung SmartTV to good use today. This will be beautiful on 50″ of screen. Ahhhh, so glad to be off today!

  • Final countdown!

  • EricRees

Team #BAYBEL report in! Today’s the day when we finally win the war!

    • Ross

      Team Hashtagswereso2012!

So you’re telling me that not only is today my birthday, but I also get to get out of work early, annnddd I get to watch the live stream of Google I/O. Damn it feels good to be a gangster…….. (using the word “gangster” very loosely there)

    • Royal Assassin

      Happy Birthday!

      • Kevin Mills

  • Tim242

Google accidentally confirmed 4.3 in their own search results haha

  • cancerous_it

I touch myself in anticipation for this.

    • Steve Benson

I’m fully prepped to handle multiple nerdgasms today…

    • Royal Assassin

I’m touching my cat and he’s touching himself in anticipation!

      • Those pussies always touching themselves.

        • Royal Assassin

          Indeed….he’s doing it right meow!

  • Shane Redman

And so the jealousy of watching Kellen and Tim begin…

  • TheRobotCow

So am I the only one that sees the event starts on “May 22”?

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

      Not at all

  • EvanTheGamer

No live chat this time, Droid-Life? 🙂

  • Am I the only one that keeps checking Google Play for updates?

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

Nope, waiting for it to be taken offline then I’ll start to get excited!

    • Royal Assassin

      haha nope!

    • Steve Benson

No, you’re not the only one.

  • EvanTheGamer

    1 hour until showtime folks!

  • Alberto Hamade

Forgot my nexus 7 at home, hope they don’t allow a download of 4.3 till another day or later today, the suspense would kill me!

  • Ross

So excited for the possibility of Babel! Kik and WhatsApp slow my phone down and burn my battery. I just want it so I can share pics. Does anyone know how long it will take to show up from it’s (hopeful) announcement?

    • Steve Benson

Depends on if Google pushes it as a new app through the play store or if it’s a system app.

      • Ross

        Thanks Steve!

        • Steve Benson

Obviously, hopefully it will be a new app pushed through the play store otherwise it will take forever to get it out to users.

          • Ross

Yeah. I hope it’s not like the wait I had to endure for Jellybean haha.

  • Damn you work computers blocking youtube! I guess my GNex’s battery is in for a surprise…

  • AHawke

I’m already stoked, the new play store apk, thank you Droid Life, and now all these new updates too! Bring em on! Thank you for the coverage DL!

  • Apostrafee

Just saw a rumor Samsung has a Touch Wiz free S4 announcing today?!

  • Told coworkers I was on a webinar and not to be bothered

    • Brandon Golway

I wish I could do that too but the other IT guy I work with sits right behind me :-/

  • EvanTheGamer

I’m awake! I’m awake! I’m awake for the Google I/O Keynote! YEAHHHHHHH!

  • Ken Bosse

I haven’t been busy in 3 weeks at work. Today..of all days people are bugging out. WHYYYYYYYY

  • jwildman16

I have a meeting right when the keynote starts! 🙁 Is there somewhere I can watch it later?

    • B T

I’m sure that Google will archive it and that they’ll post the link on here. The Google I/O app will stream it if your meeting ends in time.

    • With the latest YouTube updates, you can rewind the live-stream above to the beginning and watch it when you can. Otherwise, I’m certain that it will be available immediately after it ends as the full video.

  • I am really hoping for just some more polish to the OS, more quick settings/toggles, “BABEL” with SMS support, new maps and Gmail app, and some power saving stuff as well.
also hoping they DONT announce a new N7….i dont want to have to buy another tablet right now 🙂

    • Jarred Sutherland

You don’t have to buy one. I am sure the current N7 will continue to receive upgrades. 🙂

      • Dr0me

the nexus 7 feels like a laggy POS these days. in dire need of an upgrade

        • if your N7 is anything short of smooth as butter, you need to factory reset that thing. Mine is smoother than the day i bought it.

          • Dr0me

i had to encrypt it in order to get work email on it (since my phone is rooted). It is a known thing that the encryption makes it laggy as hell. I forgot what it was like before doing that.

          • hmmm…..never heard of that. that really sucks then. good luck and here to hoping 4.3 (whenever we get it) fixes this problem.

      • no no no…you dont understand…..i am currently VERY happy with my Nexus 7. its still as fast and smooth as it was the day i bought it and does everything i need it to do. but when something new comes out in the tech world….I must have it. its coded into my DNA. I can’t help myself. I will pretty much do whatever i can to buy it. 🙂

  • I’ll be canceling my SGS4 order if a Google phone is announced… here’s hoping!

    • Brandon Golway

I saw that this morning and my first thought was “good thing I didn’t get my S4 already!” lol

  • TheWenger

    Google Wallet > Me.

  • r0lct

    Damn time zones!

  • AnotherAndroidKid

The most important thing for me is actually BLE for the GNex.

    • Steve Benson

      What’s BLE?

      • Bluetooth low energy.

        • Steve Benson

        • B T

Is that not something that has to have specific hardware for it?

          • It is an additional profile for Bluetooth 4.0, so it will never be available for the GNex, since the GNex is only compatible with BT 3.0.

          • The GNex contains a Samsung SWB-B42 BT 4.0 Dual Band Wlan FM Tx/Rx chip so the hardware is there

          • Gnex contains a Samsung SWB-B42 BT 4.0 Dual Band Wlan FM Tx/Rx chip so the hardware is there

  • Jason Parr

3 hours…… Crap I thought it was an hour and a half…….. Hope the wife doesn’t get mad when the lawn doesn’t get mowed!!!

    • onDroid

      You have 4 minutes. GO!

  • Eric Hare

Mostly excited for Babel. Really hope it includes SMS support

    • Steve Benson

God SMS support would be amazing! I have a bad feeling we’ll be disappointed though… 🙁

      • Been preparing for the worst, hoping for the best.

      • Eric Hare

I feel like the service will be FAR less useful and gain much less traction if it doesnt include SMS support. So long as their is a separate messaging app, and so long as nearly everyone in their contact list has SMS (which, currently, they do. Same cannot be said for Facebook Messenger or iMessage) then SMS will continue to dominate.

Hopefully someone at Google thought this through…

        • Facebook Messenger actually might be better than the stock SMS for the fact that it can put Facebook messages and SMS messages into one place.

          • Steve Benson

Maybe, but the majority of people do not want to use facebook messenger.

    • WalkerNA

      I really hope it’s compatible with pre-ICS.

      • B T

Honestly, it would surprise me if any of the big software changes or announcements were compatible pre-ICS.

        • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, I second that. It’s not their fault some peeps aren’t on JB yet. lol

          • WalkerNA

I’d love to be on Jelly Bean but there is no ROM beyond Gingerbread for the Droid Charge. At least, not one with working radios.

          • Eric

Ah, the good ol’ gingerbread days

          • EvanTheGamer

I remember ’em days! It seems like it was Eons ago!

          • EvanTheGamer

            Okay, fair enough.

      • Dr0me

it is time to upgrade your device.

        • WalkerNA

Waiting for either the GS4 or more info on the X-Phone. I need to pay retail to keep my unlimited data on big red.

    • B T

Me, too! Just something that rivals iMessages and integrates it all in one app, choosing the best service to send it through. And that it’s an app I don’t mind using instead of a third party text messaging app.

  • Brandon Golway

I hate that I’m at work and can’t stream the keynote 🙁 This is the first one I’ll miss, I guess I’ll have to be glued to the live blog!

  • Geoff Johnson

I hope there’s some good hardware being announced, even though they said not to expect much.

    • Steve Benson

GS4 Google Edition….hope it’s true, could be awesome!

      • My guess is this has about a 1% chance of being legit… Here is hoping that I am wrong!!

        • Steve Benson

Yeah, seems too good to be true.

I’ll remain skeptical but optimistic? haha

        • hkklife

I also HIGHLY doubt this rumor…but if it’s true it just became my #1 backup plan if/when VZW takes away my grandfathered unlimited data!

        • You couldn’t have been any more wrong lol

          • trophynut

            lmao burned!!!

      • Only problem there is the camera is a waste.

        • Steve Benson

Yeah, Google’s camera software is utter crap. It’ll be wasted on the GS4 camera hardware.

          • Wow really? I have the GS3, and i’ve gone back and forth between AOSP and Touchwiz, and the AOSP camera does so much better for me than Touchwiz. I guess it’s just me.

          • Steve Benson

Yeah, it’s strange. I honestly don’t see much of a difference myself, but most people bitch how terrible the AOSP camera software is.

It would be nice if Google surprises us with updated camera software or at least devotes some focus towards it for 5.0 KLP.

          • Idk. I switched on my Note 2 and it looked horrible. So I got a touchwiz based rom and looked great. They need a better image processor or something.

        • Tim242

That would be my only worry.

    • B T

Me, too. Even though it would be a moot point for me, as a Verizon customer. They’ll probably have non-phone hardware announcements, though. So I will at least get to take a look at them. 😉

  • DanWazz

Very excited. Can’t wait to see what will be announced.

  • Steve Benson

    Can’t wait!

Been counting down I/O for weeks now!

  • This is going to better than Christmas!:) Can’t wait!!

    • MikeCiggy

It’s insane how excited we all are for this. I’m embarrassed to tell my friends haha

      • bkosh84

I’m getting as much work done as possible at my job now because at noon my productivity will drop to near zero percent, lol.

      • Brandal Wagener

Stand proud my friend, we’re all in this together

      • I’m a proud tech geek/nerd, I’m getting giddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

      • Tim242

        You better show your pride!

      • For sure stand proud!!! cant wait!!!!

      • It’s like Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving all wrapped up in a tortilla covered with cheese…..

        • MikeCiggy

          You guys are all awesome!

      • ImmaDroid

I said on Facebook, that this should become a national holiday. Its awesome, so much better than Easter!

    • EvanTheGamer

Somehow I doubt that; you don’t get anything out of watching Google I/O except for satisfaction. 😉

    • PhoenixPath

Sadly, I think those looking for spiffy new devices or an OS announcement might be horribly under-whelmed.

Of course, I also hope I’ve never been more wrong. 😉

    • I just may have a TechGasm today!!!!!:)

    • hicksonjohn

My last pay check was $9500 operating twelve hours every week on-line. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months currently and he or she works concerning twenty hours every week. i can not believe however simple it absolutely was once i attempted it out. this is often what I do, http://www.hdcash1.com

    • I have a meeting from 12:30 – 1:00, do you think they will notice that I am listening to the keynote. I can see it now….”YES!!!!” “ooops sorry, nothing, continue Mr. Chairman”

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

May 22nd at 11 AM? What is this magic!?
