Galaxy S4’s “Animated Photo” GIF Camera Feature is Actually Kind of Awesome

Galaxy s4 animated photo

The Samsung Galaxy S4 probably has too many features (not necessarily a bad thing). There are so many that our review couldn’t possibly cover them all, nor have we had a chance to use each individual addition to TouchWiz after having the phone for almost a month. It’s just not possible to use them all in every day life. With that said, some of these will come in handy from time to time, especially when it involves the camera. Who doesn’t love an animated GIF?Β

Should you enter the camera of the Galaxy S4, you’ll find a new feature called “Animated Photo.” This feature has one purpose, to create amazing animated GIFs without having to touch a computer. When in use, Animated Photo records 5-10 seconds of footage at a resolution of 800×450. Once completed, you have the ability to loop the GIF, change the direction it animates, freeze specific areas that you don’t want to animate, highlight others that you do want active, and even trim it down to the best parts.

I’m sure you are coming up with all sorts of ways to take advantage of this, right? There is one major downside though, that I’ve already come across – the files can be upwards of 8.5MB when finished. That’s massive, and incredibly tough to share with anything other than a computer or other superphone. Still, pretty fun.

For those who already picked up the device, we’d love to see yours.

I posted another one over at our Google+ page too.

CheersΒ Arjun!

  • You are quite good in conjunction with your words. this text is wise, informative and literate.

  • Appreciate writing this information. These components is exclusive, interesting, consuming and thought-invoking.

  • I can not fathom just how much research you probably did to create this short article, but it is really food for that brain.

  • spunker88

Really wish APNG would get more support in browsers. GIF animations are nice but the file format is dated and has limited color support. Unfortunately its the only animated image format with universal support.

  • ham hollett

Wish we had Vine to use this with

    • Zach Armstrong

Cinemagram is similar to Vine and this can be used with it

  • It is familiar with Lumia phones

  • that is pretty spiffy. I wonder if a sideload of the s4 camera app will work on gnex.

  • I’ve been using it and I find it very good quality, I like most is its screen, a very large and easy to use.

  • MFG

Next week I’ll be buying a Verizon Nexus 4 from the Play Store.

    • Tim242

Hahahahahaha what have you been smoking?

      • dgarra

No joke. Just because a CDMA / LTE Nexus 4 is getting announced next week doesn’t mean it’s coming to Verizon (Sprint and Metro PCS seem more likely and are a little less restrictive than Verizon)

    • rodney11ride

im with this guy ^^^^ lol

  • greekmanx

I liked the S3 have a DNA now love that also very interested in the S4 only real concern is the Burn-in on the super amoled screens anyone else concerned with that or is it just me?

    • Justin Kos

I have none on my galaxy nexus

      • Chris Peterson

I’ve actually just started noticing how much burn-in is on my Gnex. The status bar and bottom bar. I notice it when I play full screen games.

        • Tim242

          Brightness all the way up?

      • Adartilth

I got some bad burn in on my GNex of my keyboard =[ Thankfully I had the extended warranty from VZW (One of the few good things about them…)

        • Tim242

I never had any in my year with the Gnex. Do you have your brightness all the way up?

          • Adartilth

Not often enough for it to matter, screen off when possible. Gotta get past that 4 hour mark of battery life =)

    • Tim242

Never had any in my year with the Gnex. None in the last 6 months with my Note 2.

    • My Gnex is also burned in at the bottom with navigation controls πŸ™ Also now using PA in full-screen mode at the bottom where the buttons used to be it is slightly bluer than the rest of the screen on white. Auto-brightness on 100% of the time, but in the car, it’s usually maxed. πŸ™

  • Hatyrei

Hi I need a solid opinion… I’m kinda confused if I wanna get the HTC ONE or the GS4>? I currently have the Nexus 4… should I skip this time and wait for the Nexus 5? πŸ˜› arrrgggg..

    • Justin Kos

Just keep the n4 its an amazing device, or get something else and give the n4 to me πŸ™‚

  • So it doesn’t allow for compression on the device itself?

  • WickedToby741

Hopefully Android 4.3 includes a similar feature for the camera. With this and Vine, the ability to quickly and easily take animated shorts is quickly catching on. It would make a nice tie in to YouTube. I feel like YouTube would be a good channel to launch a Vine competitor.

  • disastrousrainbow

This right here. Convinced me to pre-order. Yup.

  • jp

This will take sexting to a whole new level

  • Trevor

So how many times did you have to take that photo before you made a basket…?

  • Bryan F

    So it’s Cinemagram?

  • n900mixalot

What’s all that about gimmick and bloatware? Hmmm?!

  • EvanTheGamer

How long does processing take for a 10 second animated gif?

    • Not long at all on the phone. 5-10 seconds maybe, it’s really quick.

      • EvanTheGamer

That’s awesome! Even though this feature is sorta niche, it will still definitely come in handy plenty of times over! Can’t wait to utilize it as soon as I get my SGS4 early June!

  • emoney

that cat’s face is insane, what kind of cat is that?

  • fartbubbler

    you shoot better than Melo

    • I got office range, Melo can’t keep up.

  • will bartlett

how many times did it take you to get that shot?

  • XphoneTroll

best phone out on the market …. πŸ™‚

    • Rodeojones000

      • EvanTheGamer

      • XphoneTroll

oh hey Dr. Phil.. So you tell me..

      • I love ya Tobias Funke, but there is nothing that compares to this. Stock Android maybe.

        Ready for may 26th?

        • EvanTheGamer

I thought it was May 30th?

        • Alex Thomson

Nope, the 21st I’ll have mine.

    • troy studnicka

You damn right it is!!! I can’t wait to get mine. I only played with the phone for a little bit at the US Cellular store. I’m on Verizon so I hope I get the email that it has been shipped here in a couple more weeks πŸ™‚

    • Tyler

I think you meant most unique software features on a phone out on the market

      • BulletTooth_Tony

I’m pretty sure he meant best phone out on the market. Justifiably, and undeniably.

        • This. The HTC One is a sexy phone in almost all accounts, but you can do more with the S4 imo, even if it a lot is gimmicky, what not useful to you doesn’t mean it’s not for everyone.

I won’t lie though, the build quality of that HTC is just fantastic, but I currently have the Note 2 with a carbon fiber back as well as metal bumper and that combination is beautiful as well. But, I think I’m gonna hold out and wait for the Note 3.. Assuming they don’t make it that rumored 6 inches.

    • EvanTheGamer

Agreed! As soon as Verizon gets the S4, I’ll be getting the S4! Cannot wait!

I’ll still keep my Galaxy Nexus around for modding, playing games(for the ones that aren’t compatible with my S4), etc.

      • BulletTooth_Tony

You should just find the tallest building in your geographic region, and perform a drop test from it with that Galaxy Nexus.

        • EvanTheGamer

Sure. There’s plenty of tall buildings in the Los Angeles area.

But I would never do such a thing. Maybe if I had lots of green to burn, then perhaps, but since I don’t, no can do! haha

          • Justin Kos

I love my gnex, does everything I need

          • mjmedstarved

I felt the same way.. until I held some of the new phones; made mine look slow!!!! :/

          • Keith K

I traded my Gnex for the S4. I haven’t charged my battery in two days and I’ve been instagramming and text messaging the whole time. Still have 12% battery life left. Impossible on the Gnex

          • BulletTooth_Tony

Run it as a fund raiser… haha. I’d pay a few bucks to watch it for sure.

    • Buckoman

inb4 Bionic says “xfone” one more f***ing time.

    • callumshell1

It can make gifs = best phone on the market.

This is only a software feature you dunce.

      • trumpet444

I don’t own a Galaxy S line phone or probably never will but I HIGHLY doubt he was basing that the S4 is the best phone on the market solely on the fact that its installed with software so “it can make gifs”. You’re the freaking dunce for assuming such an idiotic claim

      • Tim242

Software is what makes a phone you dunce.

    • WickedToby741

It’s certainly hard to recommend against it right now. If only it had HTC build quality.

    • Akashshr

Samsung marketing has got even the best of americans, people who once had a motorola phone before Moto died, and then once again had a Motorola droid again before it died! And people are so zombiefied, ‘Samsung’ is making the best phone in the market! Ha!

Its a horrible increment over the SIII, not that it was good to begin with! All samsung is going to do is Market the crap out of it, and then keep adding Pointless features, that have no real use or place in the real world!
Take tips aspiring entrepreneurs, all you need to get into peoples head is good marketing and LOT of silly features!
