Google Search Update is Live, Brings Google Now Widget to Home and Lockscreens

Google Now WIdget

Moments ago, Google pushed an update out to Google Search in Google Play, bringing some slick new features that we have been talking about over the past couple of days. Google Now widget, anyone? On top of an all new widget that can be placed on either your homescreen or lockscreen, movie rating are pulled from Rotten Tomatoes, there are movie passes from Fandango, and even real estate listings from Zillow.

What’s in this version:

For Android 4.1+ (Jelly Bean):

  • Google Now widget for home screen or lock screen
  • Movie passes from Fandango
  • Movies now includes ratings from Rotten Tomatoes
  • Real estate listings from Zillow when in the market for a home
  • Music button when a song is playing in voice mode (US only)
  • Support for US college sports

*Lockscreen widget support only available on Android 4.2+.

Update:  Here is a look at all of the new cards.

Go grab it!

Cheers Ben and Tommy!

  • The funny thing about this update… iOS 6.1’s “amazing”, “must-have” new feature of buying movie tickets through Siri from Fandango, Google included with an app update to Google Now… Apple fail!

  • Why does the widget only display the weather card, but when I go into Google Now, there are 3 other cards that are not shown on the widget? Not that big of a deal but I am a bit of a perfectionist 😛

  • David Moylan

Anyone else having issues with cards showing up now? Nothing shows up for me since the ipdate

  • coolsilver

It’s too bad that MikeyXDA won’t update Google Now for ICS.

  • Dave S

On my 4.1+ Note2 the menu disappears instantly as I tap the menu key. Didn’t do this before I updated.

  • Warwick

Deciding to replace my circles widget on my razr hd with this.

  • dadllum

You can now have your work commute set via public transit, and ‘other commutes’ by car, bike, or walking!

  • Drome

ugly widget is ugly…. I wish i could put this and dash clock on the same lock screen

  • Widget can’t be inserted on RAZR or RAZR MAXX with the JB update that came out Christmas Eve. What a joke.

    • Ken Bosse

Doesn’t seem to work with the M launcher either (i’m on GS3)
Instantly went back to Nova once i saw this a few seconds ago.

Do they have 4.2? I was under the impression that those phones got a 4.1 update only?

      • 4.1, but this is still compatible. I’m not talking about the lock-screen widget. That’s only 4.2.

    • Detonation

Works for me, had to reboot to get it to show up as an available widget in the launcher though.

      • It shows up – but it’s only addable as a full-screen widget…when it really isn’t. I didn’t want to dedicate a whole page to it.

        • Dave S

Add it to a full screen then resize it down AFTER. Worked for me on 4.1+

  • jaybar

  • Daniel Clifford

Woo….So I can get this update, but not the OTA for my N7. AWESOME

    • You could just sideload the OTA, if you’re so impatient. 🙂

  • Cody Stamps

It should be noted that there is also a new “Search with Camera” option in the menu pop up.

    • Bob G

      That has always been there.

  • How do I add it to the lock screen?

  • brkshr

It annoys me that they can’t keep the name consistent. Is it Google Now or Google Search? Google should know better than this!

    • Dan

      I noticed this too

    • Google Now is a feature of the Google Search app. The search app feaure list would include four products: [text] search, voice/sound search, Goggles and Now.

    • Google Now is part of the broader Google Search. Not too difficult, right?

      • brkshr

Not difficult, but still annoying. I get that Google Now is a function of Google Search, but there’s the ‘Google’ app in the drawer, ‘Google Now’ is what they advertise & ‘Google Search’ is what you update on the market. I would think they would want to keep things less complicated for users.

        • I see where you’re coming from.

          • No you don’t.

        • I don’t think it’s a real issue. If you know the different names, you likely know what they each represent. The rest of the population probably just thinks of everything as Google.

    • MikeCiggy

My understanding is Google Search is the app, Google Now is a feature of Google Search

    • quad

It’s Google Now for proactive search like this. Google Search is anything actually involving the search bar or voice search. They’re within the same app, but the two functions are different

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

Still no college football that I can see

    • col3rsc

it only show the games that are in season

      • MooleyBooleyTroll

Yeah but I can’t even add it… It allows me to add college basketball but not football.

        • Exactly… Back to what jaybar and col3rsc are saying… NCAA football is not in season. I’m sure it will become an option once it’s closer to football season.

        • MooleyBooleyTroll

Niether is NFL football but I just added my favorite NFL team.

          • Read my statement to your other comment. That and use your brain.

      • MooleyBooleyTroll

That and I just added an NFL team in which the last time I checked was out of season 🙂

        • Well duh, the feature existed for the past NFL season… No reason to take it out and put it back in when the season starts…… In the case of NCAA football, it hasn’t been part of Google Now, ever. C’mon man, think.

          • MooleyBooleyTroll

I’m not going to go rounds with ya.. I just thought it odd that you can’t *ADD* the team lol

          • Has nothing to do with going rounds, just think a bit. You’ll be able to *ADD* once the season comes along, trust me. After that, people will be able to add them ever after the season is over.

          • MooleyBooleyTroll

Thanks for your assumption that it will be available once the season starts.. Just like College Basketball was available once it started… Oh yeah it wasn’t 😉 I will just wait until I am able to add it to my list and I’ll be fine. Like I said, I just found it odd that I wasn’t able to add it to my list of favorites.

          • You’re welcome. Please note that I didn’t say it will be available BEFORE it started.
I’m simply explaining to you why it’s not available right now, not trying to predict exactly when it will be available… but you’re having a hard time understanding (as evidence by your NFL comment). I guess the concept just may be a little over your head. Good day.

    • jaybar

so you want updates for those college football games that don’t exist given that it’s February?

  • Got it! Exciting! I thought the new lock screen was only going to be for those beyond what VZW has allowed on our Galaxy Nexus.

  • Booyah

    • Some men just want to watch the world burn….

      • Dan

        Perfect response…lmao

      • Booyah

        Well played, sir.

    • Derek Traini

I have it too! It’s fun to watch it fall 😉

    • snowblind64

AAPL is a falling star. I watch all of the major tech stocks. Looks like without Jobs, Apple has lost it’s magic. It’s the 90’s all over again.

  • Dr_Buttballs

  • update not showing up for me 🙁

    • j__h

      shows up for me.

      • finally got it to show after rebooting my phone. For some reason uninstalling and reinstalling wouldnt do the trick.
