Use Your Android Netflix App to Control Netflix on Your PlayStation 3

Recently, it’s been uncovered on a few forums and sites that the Netflix app on both Android and iOS has an “Easter egg” inside. Apparently if you have Netflix open on your phone and open on your PlayStation 3, both being connected to the same WiFi network, you can control the PS3 app from your device. Oh, well that’s nice.

I tried doing this same setup on my Xbox but was unable to get it to work. Hooked up the 360 over WiFi and no remote feature popped up. Dang. Would be nice if us Xbox owners could get some love. And please, don’t start a console war in the comments. We all know Android is better than both anyways.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I have Nexus 7 and PS3, this doesn’t work at all

cant get mine to work. g nex with new ps3.

  • Clint O

It works. How just need to be able to control the ps3 itself with my Gnex

Funny story, my gf went to watch Netflix on her iPhone and seeks me out in a panic when it gives her the option “iPhone or X1″ thinking someone was hacking her. I just laughed my ass off as X1 is my PS3’s “codename”. anyway shortly after I loaded up netflix on my G-Nex just to wipe it in her face that I could to?

But next week she’s upgrading to a One X (Irony!)

  • NastyEmu

This would have come in handy before I spent money on the PS3 adapter for my Harmony remote.

Must test this out when I get home. I wonder if it will work with my Sony “smart” Blueray player that basically runs the PS3 OS.

  • EvanTheGamer

HELL yeah! This is cool. I’ll have to give this a whirl later on today. Wow, badass.

  • ArrowCool

    OK, so that option doesn’t appear for me… GNex w/ 120GB PS3

  • Jesse Pinkman

And that’s how you use your android to play Breaking Bad on your PS3 using Netflix … bitch!

  • John Jenness

anyone test this on the Wii yet? I could really screw with my wife and kids if it works!

  • techie_1

The PS3 YouTube app pairs to android too. It would be nice if the amazon instant app had this.

    • ddh819

i wish there was just a general ps3 remote control android app, mainly for typing

      • techie_1

Yeah, that would be awesome. There is a PC app that came with my Sony Vaio that acts as a ps3 keyboard, but an android app would be perfect.

  • corkis

same can be said about youtube and netflix on the wd live tv.

  • Southrncomfortjm

Now if Netflix just had some better movies for instant streaming…

    • 4n1m4L

Now if the nexus Q just worked the same way…

  • Detonation

I’m waiting on the Xbox Live app’s remote functionality that the iOS and Windows apps already have.

  • mmoreimi

what if the PS3 is WIRED but on the same network? Will it still work?

    • Phil Austin

      yes, works great.

    • ddh819

probably works even better, since the ps3 wireless adapter is not so great (imho)

I have to try this when I get home, I normally use Netflix on my tablet or computer, cause I dislike how it is setup on ps3. And xbox

  • FLG

This function works while device is on WiFi and PS3 is connected via router as well. Any which way you are connected to internet, as long as its the same connection.

  • Bigwavedave25

Wonder if it works if you are wifi tethering to the PS3? Technically they would both be on the same network connection at that point…

  • Paolo_Ozaraga

I imagine it would work only with Sony because they are already a hardware partner of Google’s. Microsoft has their own smartphone platform and it doesn’t make business sense to integrate the two

  • NexusMan

Wow…you guys are late on posting this one…. :)

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      None of us have a PS3! :P

      • http://twitter.com/BriCo84 Brian Cohen

        That’s your problem right there…

  • S.Ober

Going to try this on all my PS3s when I get home. If wondering, I have 3.

    • carlinscuderi

      Thanks, I was wondering.

  • Heartless12

to bad this doesnt work on the xbox 360 …..o well at least we will have smart glass

  • dereknmsu

I own xbox ps3 and nexus and love all three!

    • http://www.facebook.com/187inmotion Abraham Abundis

      Same here

  • http://twitter.com/ranwanimator Randall Wanamaker

Why does the PS3 keep getting all of the new features first?

    • SchwannyT

Sony loves android and makes half a dozen android devices…. microsoft hates android makes zero android devices and sues anyone that does…. so weird that Xbox doesn’t get those features…. :)

    • Detonation

I’m not so sure this is an official “feature” than just a side effect right now.

  • MikeSaver

lol Android is better than both. I’ll have to try this on my PS3, though I always have my PS3 wired directly into the router so don’t think it will work…

    • Devilsephiroth

Same. And it works. The WiFi or modem is the same signal.

  • Futbolrunner

C’mon son, it’s all about the Gamecast

    • Guest

      Yeah, SURE it is. lol

  • Brendon Martin

It’s too bad, because I can’t get the new netflix app to be remotely functional.

  • http://twitter.com/RJ_Nellis_86 Robert Nellis

I actually stumbled across this late last night while watching the Fifth Element on Netflix.

    Go Bruce Willis!!!

    • ArrowCool

      Mul-ti-pass?

      • jewvee

Yeah, multipass, she knows it’s a multipass. Leeloo Dallas. This is my wife

  • QQpayne

This is great for me, i use my ps3 for netflix more than anything else.

    • Sven Enterlein

Yep, that and for Blu-Rays. We have two but almost never play games.
