American Airlines Plans to Equip 17,000 Flight Attendants with Galaxy Notes

American Airlines is already giving in-flight entertainment with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1s for customers, but now they are looking to upgrade their flight attendants as well. They’ve been testing the program out since spring and AA plans to move forward and get all of their flight attendants the Galaxy Note “tablet” to help out with passenger information and seating.

After testing “many devices” the Galaxy Note was decided upon for giving a lot of screen space and functionality while still only taking up one hand and being able to fit into a pocket. Information on earlier flights, seating arrangements and plane delays will all come up on these Notes and make information easily accessible to attendants and passengers. AA promises “a whole suite of applications” to come down the road to integrate the devices even more.

  • Probably why they’re going bankrupt and laying off so many employees. {{-_-}}

  • American Airlines or Android Airlines? I kinda like the ring of the latter.

  • Carlos carrasquillo

yeah and they laying off 4,400-11,000 plane mechanics…go figure

  • Butters619

Well T-Mobile had to unload their stash some how.

    • hkklife

LOL! I was just posting the same thing. Maybe that’s why the T-Mob Note was so short-lived!?! Also, maybe this will ensure that the Note has a longer-than-usual support lifecycle due to so many units being out and about in the field?

  • Why is it that practically every single ‘Random Contest Winner’ on this website — since inception — is a Disqus non-account (Guest) commenter with their DroidLife contest post being the one and only post they’ve ever made on the site and which — coincidentally — also wins the contest(s)? It’s like that in every single contest post with only a couple of exceptions. Then DroidLife immediately locks up the ‘contest’ threads so that this fact cannot be pointed out in the relevant ‘contest’ thread rather than elsewhere on the site?

Fishy. Very fishy indeed. I smells it.

especially since i offered to buy them burgers to prove how awesome my entry was. FREE BURGERS GUYS!

that said, back to airlines and notes.

    • paul_cus

The dude that won the burger contest is on DroidLife all the time. Just saying.

      • In the single solitary case of “the dude that won the cheeseburger contest” for “National Cheeseburger Day” — he even went ‘above and beyond’ and submitted a picture of his “cheeseburger” along with his alleged post [no link to the ‘winning’ post and over 3100 posts in the thread to search thru? no thanks] that does not appear to even contain a hamburger patty. From what I can tell from the pic it’s just a bunch of green and red stuff and what looks like either a few pepper bacon or pastrami slices between two slices of bread. It doesn’t even have cheese slices. It’s just cheesey bread used for the bun.

That is definitely NOT a “cheeseburger”. That is merely a “sandwich” based on what I can see.

Also, if you GIS the name with this site — there are only two results produced. He may be “on DroidLife all the time” — but he sure as heck doesn’t post “all the time”. I’m not saying there are not more than two posts by ‘Mike Kilar’ — but this goes towards what I already mentioned and pointed out. I search specific sites all the time for specific word entries and the GIS results are usually pretty accurate.

        Just saying.

        • paul_cus

You’re right, that doesn’t look like much of a burger.

  • master94

Nice to see AA giving their employees one of the best Smartphones in the world.

  • nightscout13

This is good progress. Note 2 would be a better choice though.

    • Note 2 would be much more expensive and they would have to wait for them. Plus the Note 2 doesn’t really offer anything (for their purposes) besides a slightly larger screen.

  • manny

The pilots will use ipads for navigational purposes

    • nightscout13

For flight manuals. Not for navigation.

      • RW-1

Yes and no. for actual navigation -not. However it will hold electronic version of all charts – departure, enroute (low/high/wac/sectional), SIDS,STARS, Approch plates and Airport diagrams.

    • LionStone

Wow…yet Sammie just killed off apple as an option for the purposes described above…that’s what happens when apple limits itself to one HUGE tablet or one TINY phone.

  • RW-1

They can afford that, but not pay the Pilot’s a good wage in comparison to other airlines, have stopped contributing to their pilots pensions, and are considering killing the pension alltogether … bastards, looks like strikes are going to occur soon … Sad. They’ll end up merging with US Airways …

    • shooter50

Strike??? Yeah, great idea. Worked out well for Eastern Airlines mechanics. The airline just shut down and everyone was out of work. Not many wanted to hire “former” Eastern Airlines employees after that. So, by all means, strike if it makes you feel better, but the pilots don’t have much leverage with thousands of other pilots looking for work.

    • LOL a strike? There are an assload of regional airline pilots that would love to make what AA pilots make.

  • I just heard today that they sent out layoff notices to 11,000 employees. Must’ve been to make room in the budget for these…

    • nwd1911

      too soon, I believe…

      • I didn’t mean it as a joke. I find this ridiculous.

        • JSIN

          its true the did…

        • nwd1911

Got it, I read the sarcasm as humor…it’s my default setting.

    • RW-1

They’re only looking at releasing 4,000, however by law they have to notify any employee that could get laid off as a result of a senior person stepping down to take their position, hence …

    • Butters619

A phone is $600. An employee is $30-60k a year. Cutting jobs sucks, but American Airlines has to do something to save itself and the other 75,000 people it employs.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    IF it’s not a GN2 I won’t ever Fly American again.
