Google Wallet No Longer Working at All on Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Updated)

For months now, if you were using a Galaxy Nexus LTE, there were ways for you to cirumvent Verizon’s ridiculous block on Google Wallet. All it took was either a browser trick, a sideloaded .apk, or a custom ROM with the app built in. It was pretty simple, for the most part.

As of today, it appears as if Verizon and Google have found a new way to block the app from working on your phone, one that kills off most of the previously working workarounds. More than a handful of users tipped us off to a new pop-up (pictured above) that mentions something about the Wallet app no longer being “supported.” It then asks that you tap an “Update” button to get the latest version from the Play Store. Of course, once you tap “Update” and head into the store, you are greeted with a message that says that your device is not compatible.

I can’t imagine that the lovely developer community won’t find a workaround, but for now, you’ll have to sit tight and deal with one of the more frustrating situations we have ever come across in Android. Thanks for keeping it “open!”

Update: Β Thanks to the wonderful DL community, you can jump right into the comments and get yourself a new and working .apk.

Cheers James, Jon, Craig, Andrew, and Daniel!

  • Barry Taylor

I have the new version working (look in comments for PEZJONO’s link). I didn’t drop it in the system folder or anything, just downloaded it, and installed! Works great!

  • Keyan X

If you need the newest Wallet apk here it is: http://d-h.st/416

  • Eric Markson

Here is another mirror to the .apk posted earlier:

    (Thanks, pezjono. Worked for me)

  • Mad Guy

I like to reserve judgment until the facts come out, but I think we all know this is some Verizon nonsense since no one else is reporting issues that I’ve seen. It will be a sweet, sweet day when Google can stop being Verizon’s b*tch. Until then, I may just get an unlocked G-Nex and slide to a T-Mobile prepaid plan. I love VZW service but as a company….smh

  • Andrew Remmers

GAWD Why can’t Verizon stop being such a friggen jerk! STOP RESTRICTING ANDROID!

  • Not happening in my AOSP build. However I was not allowed to use my phone to pay for something at CVS today. The cashier refused to ring up the order citing an email they had gotten saying that identification theft was rampant with phone based payment.

  • lsbeuromix

    worked for me

  • baldypal

I’m on 1.5-R75-v6 and running fine. Why is that I wonder? When does it actually throw the error? (Can’t seem to attach screenshot from phone though. Disqus error?)

  • John

This is how I feel right right:

  • Phil

I was getting the error just loaded the apk listed from the dropbox link and wallet is working again

  • Nadora

Wow Verizon…. that’s low. Never understood how this can be legal anyway. It is clear as day to anyone that they are just doing it because of ISIS.

  • Mine has worked since they released the update to the new version, R79-v5. I simply sideloaded the newer apk after I reset the wallet app, used wallet today at McD’s…

  • Alex

Thanks for bringing this topic to everyone’s attention. I used the browser trick on my stock unrooted Verizon GNex months ago and have never had a single problem until this morning. I’m hoping Google will straighten this out. In fact, I am sure this is only temporary as many of us still have money on our pre-paid cards.

  • running version 1.5-R75-v6 which came with the mmuzzy ROM and its still working.

  • Joey Miranda

it does work just not the normal method, it needs to be side loaded at least thats what i did on my galaxy nexus running jelly bean and its working again. link to apk is here not mine found file on my own on rootzwiki page…https://www.dropbox.com/s/byy6zu46tdetg44/Wallet%201.5-R79-v5.apk

    • PhoneGod

      Can this work on stock?

      • JoshGroff

        It should.

        • PhoneGod

Thanks I will try this now….lol I still have a $1.42 to spend.

          • Joey Miranda

yeah i only had like 3 bucks left, i used this new apk and now i miraculously have 10 bucks again no idea how that worked guess i got lucky πŸ™‚

          • PhoneGod

            lol I still have my 1.42 πŸ™

    • tutaina

Should we uninstall first and side load it after it..don’t want issues with my secure element

  • Ryan Powell

Of course as soon as I get to the point that I’m using Google Wallet on a daily basis it gets taken away from me. Ahhhhh! Verizon Rage Quit!

  • Barry Taylor
  • Kevin Dahlstrom

Unbelievable. Flagship Nexus device for Verizon…really!? Hoping for a fix.

  • BTW, here is the newest Google Wallet, got it off of Pezjono’s DropBox, but I uploaded it to my available hosting place that has unlimited bandwidth for downloads πŸ˜› (That I know of)

  • omgitzjose

    This can’t be legal

  • mmeiklejohn

Just in time to not be able to spend my $10!

  • Jeff Tycz

awesome just as google announces they are no longer going to keep the pre-paid card they wont even let me use it to spend it…..

  • I just checked my Gnex, and not even kidding, I looked in the App Drawer and Wallet was uninstalled…

  • pezjono

New APK. My Dropbox is limited so first come first serve!

    • Barry Taylor
    • Side-Loaded & back in business. Gracias.

    • Kevin Dahlstrom

      You rock! Thank you!!

    • ehaus81

Awesome man! Thanks so much! This whole ridiculous experience with Wallet has really soured me on Verizon. Really thinking about going to a pre-paid sim and unlocked Nexus next time around. No 4G but at this point I just don’t care. I just want to be able to use MY phone the way I want and not worry about what ever deal the carrier is working on for THEIR benefit.

      • Kevin Jellison

I actually did that. I bought an unlocked GNex and got prepaid T-Mobile for a month, and prepaid AT&T for a month. Then I had to buy a Verizon GNex because T-Mobile and AT&T’s coverage just plain sucked! I was carrying around two devices all the time. My Thunderbolt (been on Verizon for 11 years) worked everywhere I go, and the GSM Nexus was useless to the point of frustration. So, it looks like I’m stuck with Verizon and their sh!tty policies.

        • ehaus81

If you don’t mind me asking, where are you located? I’m in northern NJ and work in Manhattan and previously had AT&T before coming back to Verizon and didn’t really have any issues with it. It’s just a thought at this point. My contract isn’t up until next August so I have plenty of time to figure it out. Also, any wireless service is going to suck in my office on the 52nd floor so I’ve resigned myself to that fact already.

          • Kevin Jellison

I’m in Orange County, CA. I know that the quality varies by region, but here they were both (T-Mo/ ATT) really bad. I was totally bummed by it because I was hell bent on getting away from Verizon. The other thing is that I don’t know how well AT&T’s LTE works because you are not able to access it with a prepaid plan. For all I know, their LTE could be really good, but I refuse to lock myself into a 2 year contract anywhere, ever again! I’m buying all my phones outright.

          • Mike

what part of orange county? I never had issues with either TMO or ATT in Anaheim, Irvine, Costa Mesa or Newport Beach and surrounding areas

          • Kevin Jellison

I’m in Costa Mesa. Coverage was OK for the most part. I travel to a lot of areas in OC and would routinely lose coverage in areas like North Irvine, Tustin, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Coto De Caza… I go to these places on business, and I can’t afford to have bad coverage. I use my devices as an integral part of my business.

          • If you are anywhere near the NJ and NY metro area and is currently happy with your Verizon coverage, I would suggest you to give up the thought of going to another carrier — the experience on non-Verizon carriers is just NOT THE SAME. Yes, when you are in area that all carriers have good coverage, you won’t notice much difference. But once you wander out of those area, you will start to tell why Verizon pisses people so much and we still stick with them. Its coverage in NJ/NY is just unbeatable. I am in Nassau, NY. There are areas that you can get no coverage from anyone except from Verizon — granted, even Verizon would only give you 1 bar (or less, I think) but at least you are connected.

    • Booyah

Loaded and back up and running. All is good again in Android Land! Cheers!

    • Alec Chvirko

Thank goodness for such an excellent community. You guys are the best.

    • RW-1

FU Verizon ! Totally Illegal, we all should get together and file a class lawsuit (can we? Any Droid Lawyers out there that will assist?)
I don’t think Google is involved here, so why include them? My thought is VZ blocking connectivity to the GW servers in some method, but intil the devs chime in …

      • Might be worth doing

      • EDNYLaw

I’m the attorney that pursued the complaint with the FCC and got Verizon fined $1.25 million for blocking tethering apps. Come over to my site jasonklimek.webs.com and join the conversation. Together we all can make a change.

        • nightscout13

Are you really? well how can Verizon still block Google Wallet if they are not allowed to block tethering apps? How can i sign up for a class action?

          • peabodydude

Tethering apps were determined to fall under FCC regulations controlling part of the spectrum Verizon leased from the US government. Wallet’s a bit different than that. There may be an illegal angle to the blocking, but it’s a different angle than tethering apps.

        • thank you! we need people like that, werent they breaching that dblock in the contract also ? something like that with the FCC and lost. Im on a stock unrooted g-nex i bought last year vzw, i been using gwallet but just received the OTA jbean update notif. so im freakaing out trying to disable the gwallet before i do the jbean update so i dont screw my secure element up, I just disabled it and then cleared the data and uninstalled it, i was running the old version. so now its disabled, data cleared, uninstalled. and im thinking if i should press the update/install now on the jelly bean update. im afraid, i keep hitting install later because i dont wanna sqoink my secure element from gwallet if i dont do it correctly bc VZW is a fool, any help please??!?! I have the nexus7 too jbean its awesome i wanna update so i can have it on my g-nex phone as well so they can nfc bump n hump πŸ™‚

    • Back in the game. Thanks

    • thanks very much for this!

    • bkosh84
    • Awsome Thanks!

    • DroidDave

Where does this apk come from, and why is it still working? I’m trusting my cc info to this after all.

      • Jeremy Martin

See my comment on how to directly get it from Google Play. I had the same concerns you did and this is how i updated mine.

    • Wanker
    • Awesome, thank you so much! The DL community is Awesome… keep it up! I knew i could scour XDA and find it, but all in one right here… rockin

    • Thanks! I’m back in business.

    • hi, i have a stock unrooted g-nex from last year been using the old orginal gwallet version with no issues 1.1-r57v4 , i just disabled it through the website,(bc the update lock) then i cleared the data, then uninstalled the gwallet. now i want to update to jbean using the OTA notif keep popping up, so do i install the gwallet first? or do i run the jebean update then try sideloading the new gwallet? im afraid to sqoink the secure element

  • Bay T

Verizon Nexus is not really a Nexus.

I am so tempted to break my contract and switch.

    • markgbe

me also, but the early term fee is just too much at the moment for me so i’m waiting a little longer. I’ll probably just wait until the next Nexus.

      • moelsen8

same here.. once the new nexus hits i’m probably going prepaid.

        • vitriolix

yeah that’s what I’m thinking. lesson learned about trusting the major carriers. f verizon. when the next gen nexus is announces I’ll happily pay my ETF and get a unlocked GSM model.

      • I’m wondering if this constitutes a materially adverse change, though, allowing us to leave Big Red.

    • mustbepbs

Once my two contracts are up mid next year, I’m out. I’m getting two GSM phones (probably GNEXs at that point), jumping on Straight Talk or TMO prepaid, and let the good times roll.

No more carrier bull****. Definitely no more Verizon bull****.

    • IMHO Verizon already broke your contract.

  • Tim Swann

This has to be illegal. Verizon is not permitting users to use the device in the manner in which they choose. I am not even talking about rooting or tethering. This service does nothing to negatively effect (or effect in any way period) the quality of service provided on the network. They are blocking a competitive service from being used by consumers.

VZ got in trouble with the FCC for blocking tethering apps, they are bound to get screwed by this. This is simply blatant tampering by VZ. Sick of big red and wish I wasn’t “stuck” with them (obviously I am not going to give up my unlimited data.

    • TMO offers a full unlimited plan now. 70-90, depending on whether you bring your own phone or purchased one with subsidized pricing.

      • Problem with TMO is that the coverage sucks in my area…VZW is the dominant coverage and AT&T is next best, which is still rough. SE Alabama here

  • so are they expecting me to just use it to let someone see the web page im on. I love Verizons signal and speed but their policies suck a$$

  • CRH45

    Ridiculous. Verizon blows.

  • got this error this morning. uninstalled 1.5-r79-v5 and reinstalled. working fine again.

  • David Hussey

    There are no words.

  • ok

I thought it was illegal for them to block it…

  • PhoneGod

as each day passes this is not feeling like a nexus device man. Slow updates, certain apps blocked.

    • honestly, it’s not. even google pulled it from the aosp device tree numerous times now.

      • G3spike

They do not want it to stay on the market and get even more horrible reviews if Verizon will not allow it to function.

    • Jon Gee

Agreed. Only thing it has going for it is the stock UI. I’m going to be testing T Mobile’s service in my area. If I can go GSM without going back to AT&T I’m gone.

      • Cam

I really regret not going to T-Mo with the GNex. Stuck with a 2-year contract here or I would be jumping ship with you.

        • Gr8Ray

I actually left T-Mo and came to Verizon for the GNex. My service was horrible on T-Mo and I couldn’t wait to get out of my contract with them.

          • Jon Gee

Carrier experiences vary greatly. My plan is to buy a cheap handset and go prepaid for a month or two so I can test the network in my area. Then I’ll make a switch if it’s acceptable.

      • Whoa, whoa, whoa…”only thing it has going…”?

What about an unencrypted/unlockable boot-loader? An excellent community and awesome dev support? …that’s just the beginning…but those bullets alone help this to continue to be one of the best phones on the market!

        • Jon Gee

Ok, I’ll give you those. I stand corrected.

  • Working fine here on CM10 Toro.

  • Barry Taylor

Never really used it.. but It’s mine, and now i want it back.

  • Christian

Will it be legal for them to keep doing this once Isis is released to the public? Right now they might be able to pass it off as a simple service they don’t want on their network, but once Isis comes out couldn’t Google argue that they’re trying to monopolize the mobile payment market?

    • carlisimo

Probably not, since not quite all of the carriers are going to block Google Wallet.

  • Drew Carpenter

Just adjust your build.prop file to act like a sprint Nexus and boom, it works again

    • ryan buky

      how do you adjust it?

      • FortitudineVincimus

have to be rooted and use something like rot explorer. this is normally only done to initially trick GW and once setup, you put your build prop settings back to what they were. not something you leave endlessly modded for this- or, if you use the proper mod from XDA, you dont need to.

    • 4n1m4L

Can i do a nandroid and adjust it from there? i don’t want to root.

    • others are having luck modding build.prop to Maguro as well

      • I just set this up on my GS3, app still works, haven’t tested it yet

    • FortitudineVincimus

but doing this can cause issues with your google play store account

  • Jeff Stewart

Rootzwiki has a apk that you can download and side load. used it this morning.

  • Went to buy a bottle of water 10 minutes ago and looked like a damn idiot pushing my phone against a box. Stay classy, Verizon…

Still waiting on news for those LTE towers in Morgantown you finished in early August. It’s cool, I love rolling EVDO/1X with US Cellular while you block apps on an open platform.

I shouldn’t be this angry, but I am.

  • RedPandaAlex

I’m guessing this is Google’s doing. They want everyone on the new version with support for adding any credit card to your wallet.

    • Everyone was updated to that, including my VZW GNex rolling with Bugless Beast.

    • Ryan Powell

I’ve had the version with any credit card for weeks now so it can’t be that.

    • it is. the older version violates Google’s SE (security [something..]) here is the link to the working patched .apk https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_DoNj4iodGFT0hGTkNlZXFtUWs
also, people are having luck modding build.prop to Maguro as well (GSM version)

  • 4n1m4L

Looks like they’ve found enough of a reson for me to switch carriers. All well.

  • markgbe

uhh i dont get it.. where does this popup come from? I just opened google wallet fine on my gnex

    • Ryan Powell

I’m on stock Gnex using Wallet by way of the old browser install trick. Popup is there for me.

      • markgbe

i’m on the recent leaked verizon jelly bean update. Installed wallet from play store and the most recent update was from an apk off my nexus 7

  • cjmsd

    Verizon can suck it.

  • is there a link to the XDA version and do you need to be rooted to install/use it?

    • No root needed. Just side load the apk. Looks like someone above already posted a link.

  • That was true. But then I went to XDA and got the Wallet 1.5-R79-v5.apk package. Works fine. I’m on stock ICS with unlocked bootloader.

  • Does this not fall under the same rules as the tethering apps and LTE? Anyone know? If it does, shouldn’t it be reported to the FCC?

  • Working great on my VZ GS3. Although I’m using a hacked apk.

  • Seth Morabito

I ran into the same issue this morning. my phone is rooted and has been for sometime. I was also running 1.5-r79-v6 and got the same error. I uninstalled and and reinstalled 1.5-r79-v5 from xda and its working now

  • ryan buky

There is actually a new one up and i just installed it today. it is actually the first time i have installed google wallet and it works great

    • Mark F

Care to share the link ??

    • ryan buky

File name– com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel.modaco.apk— drop in system/app and reboot and it should take

      • I tried this method yesterday and couldn’t get it to work. I dropped in system/app and rebooted but no wallet app to be found.

  • EvanTheGamer

    Long Live The “Android Market“!

  • Must have just happened because it worked for me at 6pm EST yesterday.
