First Look at Motorola’s New Lineup of Phones

In the promo video going on at the Motorola event, this screen popped up, revealing the new lineup of Motorola phones. The DROID RAZR HD, RAZR M and what we think is a Developer Edition.

Update:  It’s not the developer edition in that picture, it’s the MAXX HD.

Live blog here.

  • Just not very exciting on any particular front.

  • luis Rios

People, root phone, inst lmt launcher and hide Navy bar apk and there you go, its not rocket science, I have it on my galaxy and it makes the phone look so much better.

  • Why i don’t get is how Motorola keeps making phones and still can’t figure it out how to take descent pictures. Motorola phones have the worst softwares and horrible lagging time when you try to take a picture. love my Galaxy S3

  • cooksta32676

I hope they fixed the screen crack issue from the 3300mAh battery. Way too many complaints popping up online about those including some of my friends.

  • dm33

Looks so completely different than every other rectangular black slab thats come out to copy the iphone in the last 5 years.
I cant wait to see how amazingly innovative it is vs. every other phone known to mankind that looks exactly the same.

    • jim

really? you are that crazy huh?

    • stupidllama

ya i really wish someone would come out with a starfish shaped phone…also i’m sure you could never find rectangle shaped phones before the iphone,
Are you that deluded that you think apple invented, sorry innovated, the rectangular phone. And btw in case you haven’t noticed, all the rectangular black slabs that are copying the iphone, are all out with features that the iphone is getting now (well in a couple weeks), so in other words the iphone may have drug phones into the 21st century but now the android phones are dragging the iphone into the next decade.

      • HTC1

I don’t think Apple brought phones into the 21st century. I give them no credit at all. All as they did is make a phone for idiots. People that can’t put togehter toys for the kids on Christmas. AKA idiots…… Stop giving that stupid, ugly, fat, heavy, little screened, non-app draw, non-changing, same old same old, hunk of junk any credit. it did nothing. I don’t know why people say that!

    • I know you might not believe this, but just like most other things Apple didn’t design or do first, they were also not the first black slab touch screen phone. I think Apple is single handedly keeping teh Kool-Aid brand alive.

  • RedPandaAlex

With three variants, ONE of them could have been a slider

    • bkosh84

I think, unfortunately, sliders are a thing of the past..

      • Justin

I’m partial to agree with that… The last slider I can recall was the Droid 4, and that worked out so well for Moto. I think sliders should be gone because, with swype, it’s so much easier to type than with a physical qwerty keyboard. My thoughts, though, and some will disagree.

    • Its not time for the Droid line update honestly. The D4 has only been out for 7 months. I’d expect a D5 announced around November, available New Years

  • david escalante

Like the design, especially the kevlar backing! But not worth it to me to lay my S3 on the back burner… Lets c that glaxy note 2 verizon…

    • Verizon has never been keen on Samsung’s devices. You can get the rebranded LG phone though if you want a large screen….

  • Are there any more details on the camera, besides the 8 MP? I’m curious about the aperture and other features, and whether it’s comparable to HTC’s One series

    • It’s Motorola. The Droid RAZR’s 8MP camera is known to have worse quality than the Galaxy Nexus’s 5MP camera. Video quality is probably still better than HTC’s cause HTC phone have HORRIBLE video quality.

      • LionStone

Don’t believe the hype…This is a shot of Crater Lake, taken with my dad’s RAZR. And I’ve only experienced great picture and video quality from HTC.

  • jim

got here late, what did they say about updates? not that it really matters, got way to tired waiting and hear you all giving me hell for not rooting,so I did

    • New CEO promised updates to all 2011 devices that can be upgraded (Bionic/Razr/Maxx/D4) and a $100 credit towards the purchase of a Razr HD/MAxx HD/M for those that can’t be (D3/DX2). That means DX2 owners can get a Razr M for FREE (on contract). Great deal imho.

      • jim

to little to late, got tired of waiting, rooted and running jelly bean now

  • Pegleg

Better to stick with the RAZR MAXX since they have dumbed-down the batt in the MAXX HD!

    • Mike Yost

They didn’t release the size of the Razr Maxx’s battery, please explain.

  • Southrncomfortjm

I’m not sure Moto or any other phone is going to convince me to switch from the newest/best available Nexus phone when I have an upgrade available.

  • Robert Jakiel

So the “New Motorola” starts today. Hrmph… looks just like the old one with a better screen. FAIL.

  • vawwyakr

Still stuck on Verizon, guess I’ll never even have to consider a Motorola phone in my purchasing decisions.

  • have to say not extremely impressed. moto hasnt sold me anything worth my next upgrade. if i had to pick 1 itd be the Maxx HD but with no camera specs, processor specs or even a price im waiting to see what the next Nexus phone is.

  • Ahku Droid

Haha! I thought they said there wasn’t going to be a MAXX HD…silly lying Moto Tweeters.

  • Ok so I could preorder a M for $99 off contract? I may do that just to have a backup for my Gnex..

    • ksat

Details??? Sounds like an interesting option.

      • I think that the $99 is with a 2 year agreement 🙁

  • Apparently these phones have the GSM band too. Now how to enable them like you could on the other Razrs…

    • They will likely launch as “world phones”, but will still be “locked” to VZW ala the OG razr. However, devs will most assuredly get around that.

    • Justin

They will probably be enabled via an OTA update, maybe with the Official JB release? Hopefully it will come global-enabled, but not likely.

  • paul

I don’t think its not impressing enough to upgrade from the razr maxx to the any of these not impressed.

  • Flexo

Nice battery life, but 1gb ram feels like it’s going to limit upgradibility beyond jelly bean. Also, a release “before the holidays”, seriously?

    • r0lct

Apparently there were desperate to get this news out the door before the iPhone 5 launch.

    • Tim_Horton

I think preorder at 5pm available next week for 50% of the new line is sufficient.

      • Pegleg

Sufficient in what way? They should have made them all available for pre-order today!

  • YourFriend

Disappointed to hear they run on S4 processors, not to say that it’s a bad processor by any means. I just wanted processor differentiation. Maybe they’ll announce the same phones running the new dual-core Atoms on the 18th?

    • Southrncomfortjm

Droid RAZR MAXX HD DUAL ATOM 4G LTE… soon!

      • Robert Jakiel

    • jim

in a cell phone you will never see the difference if it was quad, that s4 is great and add hours to your battery

  • The trolls get their wish, Droid Razr MAXX HD.

  • howboutnotdeletinghtispost

ooooh, ahhhh, see the pentile (vibrant) screen in these pictures?

    • The HD screens are RGB not pentile. Not sure about the M, but with the ColorBoost brading, I’m hoping not.

    • Steven Fields

You sure do seem very critical of Motorola… I bet you were like me and got the Razr on release day and then got word of the Razr Maxx a month later. I’d be pissed too, but c’mon. These are not bad devices. NOT top of the line either, but clearly not bad.

      • Justin

These devices are top ot the line, comparable with any other device available through Verizon… The S3 has the same specs – just a slightly bigger (0.1″) screen, and most likely one GB ram more as well. Not much of a difference.

        • Paul

Top of the line for a month or so until the phones with S4pros hit the shelves…

          • Justin

True. Still, time will tell whether or not I get a RAZR HD MAXX or whatever Nexus has a quad core…

      • Not top of the line? I feel they are, they just did not put the 2 g of ram.

  • scott

Dev edition, they mentioned “around” the holidays. Isn’t that when the Nexus’ are usually announced? Wasn’t there a rumor of multiple Nexi from multiple OEMs?

    • Justin

They should be available mid-early November if it’s to arrive before the holidays. At that time, they should just release it with JB.

      • itsacardigan

From what I understand…they are releasing it with JB

        • Justin

If they have devices at the presentation that are running it, they just as well should.

  • mmoreimi

talk about regretting your purchase…. every 10 minute Moto comes out with a different variant of the Razr….

    • because 9 months since the Maxx is every 10 min….

      • J. Gilbertson

Pre Maxx yes, after Maxx no. Motorola seems like they’ve finally gotten into the right kind of production cycle. only draw back is that it looks like they might have finally dropped slide out keyboard phones for Verizon since they didn’t announce a physical keyboard phone in this “family”

        • They announced the new Razr family. The update to the Droid family will be a bit yet, methinks.

    • r0lct

talk about regretting reading your post, every 10 posts the same joke

    • Justin

The last RAZR variant was available in January… It’s September. They unveiled all 3 at the same time… They gave everyone fair warning that others will be available – it’s the consumer’s fault if they jump on the M and want the MAXX HD.

      • IDK, I think the wife would jump all over the M. Better battery life with a smaller device? Yes, please.

        • Justin

I don’t mean that it’s a bad phone – Just that it’s not our fault if people don’t do their research and find out that Moto has two better phones coming out soon. I agree, it’d be a good phone for those that don’t need to have the best (aka, most of the people who were watching the event), but I personally want the RAZR HD MAXX… I’ll probably never actually need that much battery life, but I want it so bad.

    • Paul

You do realize this is how phone’s have always been right? You can’t get upset that there’s a better one out there, there always is quite quickly. But this means your new phone in 1 or 2 years will be that much better. If the companies had their releases once a year like apple, we’d still have single core processors.

  • r0lct

I haven’t been this excited about Moto since before I found out my DX bootloader was locked.

  • Clinte

And still the ugliest Clock/Weather-Widget of all time.

    • Justin

The clock widget is extremely interactive, it’s very useful actually. I think it’s appealing – OMC Widget has a similar design available, but it’s not as interactive as the one included on ICS Motorola devices.

      • Agreed. Being able to swipe the widget to get different information is, imho, the future of widgets on Android. More interactivity and information in a smaller footprint. Less time spent in apps themselves = less time switching between apps.

  • Steve Douglas

My only question is did they fix the camera of the motorolla phones?? If so I might jump from the HTC fanclub…

    • They have good camera. HTC and Samsung and the I phone have perfect cameras.

  • Capt. Crunch

Motorola WILL update my DROID 4 and the RAZR’s to Jelly Bean!!!

    • picaso86

      • OfTheDamned

By the end of the year.

        • picaso86

Awesome! by then someone will have a workable ROM already…

          • thebluegod

There already is a pretty solid ROM, with Data and all. No camera though…

          • Keenan Singh

For the razr? Which one? I know CM10 but data works now?

          • thebluegod

It’s the Kexec ROM. I’m mistaken though apparently data works for some but not all. So it’s not a daily driver…

          • OfTheDamned

You can please some of the people some of the time and please the people on Droid-Life none of the time.

        • Big_EZ

I thought that was for these new phones? The video was breaking up for me so I may ha*e missed it but they only said by the end of the year for the HDs and the M

          • Nope, he said ALL the 2011 models that can be.

          • OfTheDamned

He also mentioned the rest of the phones released in 2011 and said they would be upgraded too.

  • Brent Cooper

Razr Maxx HD looks awesome but how many mah battery?

    • Steven Fields

      • that’s the Razr HD

      • Diablo81588

No, that’s the RAZR HD, not the maxx.

    • Justin

I’m going to guess at least 3300 mAh.

    • Considering the jump in talk time, looking around the 3300 mAH range again

    • Pegleg

Didn’t you watch? It is only 2500mAh! DUD!

      • josh lazear

That’s the regular Razr HD, not the Maxx. they didn’t release the specs on the battery for the Maxx

      • Brent Cooper

I thought that was the normal razr…or did i miss something?

  • /want Razr Maxx HD Developer Edition. I’m going to be paying full price anyway, so why the hell not?

    • Justin

I second that – I’m off my contract now anyway, but if I can’t keep my unlimited data, I’m buying it off contract, regardless the price. Time to start saving!

      • Lorne Serpa

        I third that.

  • Does that mean price for RazrMaxx will drop?

    • r0lct

that would be a logical assumption

      • smwandrie93

it did 2 weeks ago, dropped 100 bucks

  • Justin

At least they unveiled both the Razr HD and the Razr MAXX HD at the same time. It should be a major selling point since both have amazing battery life over all of the competition.

    • They listened to our complains lol. I’m going with the razr hd depending on the thickness of the razr hd max.

    • Pegleg

But not as good as the RAZR MAXX…that is just plain stupid…taking a step backwards!

      • Justin

How is it not as good as the RAZR MAXX? The RAZR MAXX had 21 hours of talk time, and so does this.

      • it all depends. the maxx will likely be priced at $299, and the reg @ 199. Some people don’t want the larger, thicker, heavier device. Options are a GOOD thing, so long as they put all the options out there @ once.

  • Leo

It’s the droid razr hd maxx

  • Cheng GuanHao

Where is the Motorola RAZR HD MAXX?

    • Justin

It’s the first one in the picture.

  • I like the designs, except the motorola and Verizon logos on the front.

  • Lucky Armpit

Gonna get me a Razr HD Maxx methinks. 🙂

  • Jeeves

Did I just see the chrome browser demo blow up in his face?

    • yep. that’s what you get for touting the 4GLTE network and then trying to use wifi for a demo

  • MafiaMM

I prefer the old 4 buttons layout on the bottom then that new one that most android phones have.

    • shecalledmejay

If it’s possible to root this one, you can change the buttons at the bottom anyway you want to, thats why I love the on screen buttons.

  • Travis Shepherd

one of those razr HDs is the MAXX

  • SteveNwoz

Motorola, get rid of that HUGE bottom chin and a 1080 screen… then you’ll have a fantastic phone.

    • Detonation

Gotta grow taller if you’re gonna make it thinner.

    • Evan S.

The antenna is in the chin.

    • YourFriend

      1080p on a 4.7″ is overkill

  • MotoLuvr

ooooh, ahhhh, i can see the classic moto pentile screen in these pictures.

  • Steven Fields

So Moto is creating a family. Motorola DROID Razr, Razr Maxx, and now a small, introductory device.

Nice… We’re not going to have the Razr, Razr Maxx fiasco from last year!

  • Tom Snyder

  • BossHog

    Awesome no physical buttons!!

    • TheCheapGamer

      I honestly don’t get it.
Why do people want buttons taking up screen? I love how the S3 has a large screen without buttons on them.

      • jim

dude when they say no buttons they mean no buttons, s3 has a button

      • summit1986

Why wouldn’t you want to have buttons that fade away while watching a video or playing a game for even more screen space?

        • Butters619

You wouldn’t get more screen space you would still get 4.7″ 1280×720 display whether they were on screen and faded away or were physical.

I do like on screen buttons better though. It makes the phone look sexier.

        • TheCheapGamer

Why would I want them to fade away?
They could just not be on the screen to begin with.

          • summit1986

Buttons on screen = more screen real estate.

      • JustTrollin69

I think you’re confused. Soft navigation keys work the same as hardware, but do not stay on the physical phone when the screen is turned off, making it look nicer. That said, when using soft keys, manufactorers increase the screensize by the size of the soft keys to compensate. They do not simply remove the hardware buttons and throw them in the screen, the screen increases, otherwise there is a useless over-sized bottom bezel.

        • TheCheapGamer

4.7 vs 4.8, and the Razr has on screen buttons.
          See the problem here?

      • thebluegod

Well for one, you can play HD videos without the black bars due to the buttons disappearing. So technically since the manufacturer won’t have to make space for the actual buttons, unless the app needs the buttons you have larger screen real estate when watching movies, playing games, etc.

      • well if these dumbasses would take away the chin, the glass could almmost be completely edge to edge. BUT NO

  • sc0rch3d

been using my D2 while waiting for GNex replacement to get here. I really do miss the size and thickness of this phone. Hoping Moto can make a plethora of sizes for the top end line.

    • Justin

Based on the presentation, I think the MAXX HD should be about 9.1mm thick or so. Probably pretty comparable to the current RAZR MAXX.

  • Android1997

How about a regualr razr, mini, and large

  • shluke

ICS? That’s the ICS style Google widget

    • They said Jelly Bean by the end of the year.

      • Paul

They said all would be released with jellybean, and that all would be released by the holidays (M in a week).

        • Oops. I must have misheard. Thanks!

        • Steven Fields

Dennis said that the devices will have Jelly Bean by the end of the year (and so will some other devices; performance argument again…) and that the Razr and Maxx will be available by the holidays.

          • Not just performance, its compatibility as well, but that doesn’t sound as good to consumers. That’s why the Droid 3 is stuck on GB.

          • Steven Fields

I think we’re talking about the same thing. I remember the whole “upgrade to ICS” argument was that some devices would NOT be compatible, and therefore have a BAD USER EXPERIENCE. Same difference right?

          • Paul

I’m pretty sure he didn’t… I mean, why would they release a phone with an older OS and promise to update it within a month or so? It would be easier and cheaper to just release it with Jellybean..

          • OfTheDamned

Nope he did. They will be released with ICS and updated to Jelly Bean by year end. His words.

          • Justin

He didn’t once say specifically the RAZR HDs would be released with ICS… Just that all devices able to run JB would have it by the end of the year. This could mean that the RAZR HDs are released with JB, which would make more sense than updating them less than a month later.

          • OfTheDamned

35:51 mark of the video. http://youtu.be/0VkIpT3-kBM?t=35m51s

“All of the devices that we launch today will be available with Jelly Bean by the end of the year.”

Obviously based on the pictures, video and presentation they are all currently running ICS. Besides, being released with Jelly Bean would have been a big deal since no phone has been released running it yet and only one phone has officially received an upgrade.

          • Justin

In addition, on motorolas webpage, it shows they will be released with ics, upgradeable to jb.
