Video: First Look at Chameleon for Android

Chameleon for Android, a Kickstarter funded tablet home replacement app, has entered into its beta stage, which means that the 7,000 people that pre-ordered it will soon get an invite to start testing. Others have been hand-selected to test the app, a group that we were lucky enough to be a part of.

As is customary around these parts, we like to take apps that have generated a substantial amount of buzz for a test drive to see if they can live up to the hype. While this is still beta, the Chameleon team is confident enough in it to at least let people start to play with it.

It’s definitely feeling good, aside from a couple of minor bugs that shouldn’t be hard to fix. The quickness is there, the few widgets that are available look good enough, and some of the features like the scrollable app dock at the bottom are solid features. We are seeing some limitations as far as widgets, wallpapers and folders go, however, the only direction for Chameleon to go from here is up. There is definitely potential to be reached. Since this is a beta, this would be the time to start requesting features and reporting bugs.

To give you our first impressions on it, we tossed together this video.

Hey Guys, We’re working hard on getting the beta out to everyone ASAP. We’ve already discovered and fixed some bugs. We also plan on adding a lot more widgets and the ability to use your own wallpapers. This build is far from complete and we intend to take all of your feedback and enhance the functionality for the final application. If your on our beta list emails are coming soon.

  • trolololol

wow, they made a launcher that offers no functionality over the stock launcher. We’ve ben able to resize widgets since honeycomb and can put a lot more in than just 5. I guess the location based stuff is kind of cool, but you can get that functionality and a lot more with the locale app. I feel bad for anyone that actually paid for this.

  • NYAvsFan

I contributed and am looking forward to using this.

That wallpaper you have on your unlock screen is hideous and makes my cut myself.

    Change immediately.

    Google voice works on tablets?

    • http://twitter.com/Randark_CGC Randark

the texting and the voicemail do, obviously calling is not a feature.

      • http://www.thetechtemple.com The Tech Temple

I’m going to have to try that then. I’ve been using another app to text from my Nexus 7.

    • IseeTrollpeople

no it doesn’t, I installed it and when I tried to open it it bricked my nexus 7 :(

      • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

        really now? i doubt that…

        • http://www.thetechtemple.com The Tech Temple

He’s right. I tried it the other day and texting definitely works.

      • rstat1

Me too, as when I did; I had no issues. Something tells me you have no idea what it is you’re talking about.

background sucks and please trim your nails!

  • tallnerd1985

Its about time that we get a decent launcher for tablets, just waiting for my kickstarter donation to be registered with their servers. Now only if Google could fix the way that apps appear on their tablets then it will be perfect!

Reminds me of the QNX OS on the playbook

    • rstat1

Lol well the devs of this app are Canadian. Perhaps some of the RIM influence got to them.

hate to sound so negative and I know it’s only a beta, but I expected alot more with the initial offering than just some widgets and a scrollable dock.

yea i felt like they were over-hyping it to begin with

      • JellyBelly

I thought the same thing but if you look back at all their videos except for the the original video they gave what they have been showing.

        • michael arazan

I wonder if there is a sports widget to keep you up to date with games of your sports teams?

          • Ryan Powell

Something tells me they feel the “news” articles widget will suffice for now. Probably won’t see a Sports specific widget for a while.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1148820665 Dustin Howard

exactly, the reason i didnt donate to the project was because it seemed like its advertising was more impressive then the app. add more cool widgets and add regular widget functionality and maybe ill throw a few bucks for it

  • Buckoman

Reminds me so much of the Playbook.

  • MKader17

Defenitely needs a calendar widget, and to-do, music, toggles, Netflix, Pandora,, etc…

What would also make this nice is some XBOX style application lauching widgets and folders

  • http://twitter.com/TheTerrorWrist Poise

I wonder if i can run this on my nexus because i’m running the paranoid android rom on tablet mode.

  • Buckoman

Your background… It hurts my eyes…

  • MKader17

    I hate that background.

I’m not too sure how I feel about this… I’ll definitely be trying it out before I drop any $$ on it.

    • EvanTheGamer

How would you test it out first before buying it? Is there going to be a free version available you know about?

      • Cdoan34

you can try an app for like 15 mins before the return policy ends. im sure 10 mins with a launcher is enough to tell if you like it or not.

        • EvanTheGamer

lol…doubt you can fully test out a brand new launcher in 10 minutes, like REALLY test it out.

          • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

15 minutes is just the auto refund limit, you can request a refund from google up to something like 48 hours. I hear they respond quickly.

          • EvanTheGamer

I thought ONLY if the devs allowed that. That’s kind of ridiculous though having the 15 minute window in place when you could test out an app for a day and a half and then request a refund anyways. Lame.

          • http://profiles.google.com/cory.simpson Cory Simpson

No it’s in the Google Play Store ToS. The short automated window is there to help reduce abuse of the policy.

          • EvanTheGamer

            Good to know. :)
