DROID RAZR ICS Update Removes “3G Only” Option, Here’s How to Manually Toggle It

For whatever reason, Verizon and Motorola have removed the option under Mobile Network Settings to switch to “CDMA Only” in the Ice Cream Sandwich update that is headed to RAZRs over the next few days. For anyone that doesn’t have a RAZR MAXX, this is a problem, as LTE destroys batteries faster than you can charge them. In place of the former “CDMA Only” option is a “Global” feature for those that travel the world. Why they didn’t leave the old option and simply add “Global” to the list is a great mystery, but don’t worry, we have a way to get you onto 3G and saving batteries in just a few steps.

Instructions:

1.  Open the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
2.  A menu will appear – choose “Phone information.”

3.  Scroll down until you see the pulldown menu for “LTE/CDMA/EvDo/etc.”
4.  Tap on that menu and choose “CDMA Auto (PRL).”

4.  Hit the back button to get out of these menus and to your home screen.
5.  Wait 20-30 seconds and watch your 4G LTE logo turn to 3G.
6.  To confirm you are on 3G only, head into System Settings and tap on the “More…” button.
7.  Tap “Mobile Networks” and “Network type and strength” to see something like this:

8.  Enjoy longer battery life.

*Pro tip:  And if that sounds like a massive pain in the you-know-what, this app will help you do it much faster. It’s a shortcut to this settings menu, making it even easier to toggle the network connection type.

Cheers Jigga_Z!

How can I get back to 4G? I went back to the original Selection and it’s not finding any data connection at all!

  • manzer james

Widgetsoid has a 1×1 square small customizable widget that does the same thing as the Thunderbolt one. It is black and white and says 4G. It also can replace some of the 1×1 small widgets Motorola had in 2.3.6. Overall I am not a fan of OEM supplied Android skins (talking to you HTC and Samsung) but Motoblur had some decent widgets. I’d rather have those back as opposed to installing another app.

  • Razr Maxx User

Now my phone is stuck in 3g. I can’t get it back into I can’t get it back into 4g. If I switch to 4g it loses signal and if I reboot, it reverts back to 3g.

    • Jill

      Had the same issue
Go into “Wireless and Networks” > “Mobile Networks” > “Network Mode”, try toggling it between “Global” and “LTE/CDMA”, that usually kick starts the 4G back on for me.

  • dorian

Hi I’m a RAZR owner with what may be an obvious question: Which option do I choose from the “phone information” menu when I want to switch it back to the “global” setting (i.e. so that it can switch between 3G and 4G depending on where I am – I live in an area that has very, very weak 4G, so leaving it on is a huge battery drain.) Thanks!

  • lvmydroid

Keelex – Just wanted to say a big ” Thank You ” for this. This is why I love Droid Life. The T-bolt app works perfect and takes alot of the hassle out of the process. Thank you again.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aaron.guiliano1 Aaron Guiliano

I got the LTEOnOff app for thunderbolt and it works well. I powered down and it keeps it’s on the 3G when you turn the phone back on.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aaron.guiliano1 Aaron Guiliano

I have a Razr Maxx, I forgot to say that.

      • John

Strange. It won’t work (stay on 3G after reboot) for my Maxx

  • razr owner

is there any way to toggle the 3g/4g besides having to do this everytime? i usually it on 3g until i want to tether then i turn on 4g…

    • John

At the moment, there isn’t any other way.

  • Wolfie McFuznut

Just got the update.Using the LTE OnOff app for the Thunderbolt. Works like a charm.

  • kjr

Sweet! Soon as I got the upgrade, first thing I did was check for CDMA only. Then I began watching my battery die…

  • m

If you cant afford a data plan then dont get a smart phone! I think its absolutely pitiful how people live beyond their means. Then complain tothe company should i go down to the benz dealership and complain because i cant afford payments on a mayback noooooo! I should go to honda an pay for what i can afford if data cost too much then you should not have a smart phone they are built to maintain a open data connection at all times in order to act as a smart phone stop trying to keep up with the jones’s an go for a basic phone simple as that

    • HiyaBuddy

+100 to you sir. I signed up my family with Verizon because of the sole purpose that
their service is the most reliable in our area. AT&T has no signal in my house in the middle of a godforsaken city and the other two major carriers just plain didn’t like us because of the multiple calls to customer service. I haven’t had to call vzw for any issues since I signed up in February of this year. The only thing I ever had to do was ask one question about the bill. You get what you pay for

  • lpaulbak

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Elixir 4g widget brings you right to these settings. I highly recommend trying it.

  • gfacekilla01

This is why I love you guys. And why in the F#@* couldn’t the idiot customer service tech from Verizon give me this information yesterday when I discovered I was stuck in 4G land??

    • HiyaBuddy

Oh just wait until you make it to a corporate store and say your RAZR is frozen they’ll say you gotta do a battery pull. I was about to face palm myself then the manager came over and taught the tech how to do their job.

  • dmagicp

no ics update yet so we will cross that bridge when and if we get to it. lol!

  • adam

4G on my Maxx and a lot of other people’s drops multiple times a day…

  • steve

VZW is implying that we will be able to use other LTE networks in the US. This might be pretty big news.

Have you noticed that the coverage map on VZW’s website now has a few more categories?
    These include:
    Verizon 4G LTE *
    Verizon 4G LTE Extended **
    Extended 4G LTE ***
    Verizon 3G
    Extended 3G
    Canadian 3G

*** Access the 4G LTE network within the Extended Coverage Area; Some of the Coverage Areas include networks run by other carriers, the coverage depicted is based on their information and public sources, and we cannot ensure its accuracy.

Extended 4G LTE *** sounds like they are saying we may be able to use other LTE carrier’s networks inside the US. Do you know what carriers that might be? This seems like it would be pretty big news!

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/wireless-coverage-area-map.shtml

    • jroc74

Thanks for the info, Interesting news indeed…

    • Greennick98

This is because of us cellular adding lte and scince they already roam on them for extended network 3G and 1x so they might as well use em for lte

  • Sean

Has anyone tried calling Verizon yet to complain about the 4G issue yet? I am switching to the SG3 but my wife still has the RAZR and while that option for turning off the 4G may be ok…but to force it on customers really stinks. We still have unlimited data and combined we have not even gone over 8 or 9G. Once we get the update I am definately calling to complain because this will basically make her phone usless and in the event she would “actually” need to use it that battery draining 4G is not going to help.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Denny-Craneftw/100000896630404 Denny Craneftw

I’ll sell you my old 2004 Motorola Razr flip phone… I think you’d be much happier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jclevenger87 Justin Clevenger

i am still waiting in Indiana to get ICS on any of my three razr’s

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.jansen.980 Chris Jansen

This must work only with ICS on Razr, as typing that command in dialer with GB gives no such options.

  • Kmaxx

so do you just go to the network mode to turn the 4G back on?

  • regkilla

Verizon and Motorola want everyone with a Droid Razr to drain their battery down fast so they upgrade to a Droid Razr Maxx

  • ams165

Anybody in the Northeast see the update..
    I have nothing to date….

    • http://twitter.com/axschech Alex Schechter

      same

      • Fardous23

were always the last to get an update

        • lebron james

Nothing in miami yet either i really hope the flip the switch before the parade!

  • viperadio

seems like you could create somewat of a short cut by making a “contact” named 3g only and have the phone number of the “contact ” be *#*#4636#*#*. then when you hit that contact it pullls up the hidden radio menu?

    • Bionic

      my thoughts exactly

  • brihackn

Strange yesterday i wwas updating my phn via ota and tried to install. And it said update failed now i restored my phone and it says my device is uptodate im comfused

  • hushdrops

Thank u , think we were the first to see this last night , glad a simple solution for my wife’s Maxx is available already.

  • EatUrCrap

I keep 4G off on my Galaxy Nexus, mainly because I live in Northern California, and it’s complete BS that I still don’t get 4G here.

  • jonny6pak

This is something everyone should complain to Verizon about. The CDMA Only option shouldn’t just go away. Keep it and ADD the global feature. Don’t replace one with the other. That’s just stupid.

    • jroc74

      Totally agree.

  • insider2012

It is cheaper to run 4g than 3g for vrw. Really do you think they give 2 squats about the customer base complaints? I hope you all don’t it’s a business based on lean systems not for them but you. Same as there unlimited the only reason they caved in was just the sum amount of customers that would of jumped ship. Short term put the squeeze on so people run to store and renew, reducing shareholder loss. After 2 yrs put everyone on tier plans seeing if sprint and like companies follow through and tier. When companies like Verizon regardless that the coverage is better, the customers need to put them in check don’t buy the phone dont go into contracts don’t support there vision.

    • http://twitter.com/jednc Jon

I’ll bet you have a really good point in there somewhere….but, this is seriously hard to read.

  • Rolecks

So when exactly will people start getting that ICS its been too much bs which is stupid for verizon even tho motor already realized the software.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thelolotov Jacob Davis

    “For whatever reason”

To keep the 4G capable people off 3G, so they can focus on getting everyone on 4G.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mithmal Michael Thomas Maliszewski Jr.

I guess it don’t work until you are on ICS. I tried it today on my Maxx and it does not work.

    • moelsen8

you should just be able to go into your network info and the option will still exist there in gingerbread

  • Rodys Gonzalez

WHATS TAKING SO LONG;… .SHOULDN’T WE HAVE A ZIP FILE ALREADY;…

  • zoogle

Ummm, what was it set on before I toggled this option?

    • moelsen8

LTE(4g) + cdma(3g).. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but current tech in Verizon phones requires a separate radio for each. Which means more battery.. especially if you’re in an area where there’s no 4g, or on the fringe, or in a building or something. That radio is constantly looking for a signal and/or connecting and then dropping if it’s weak. Turning on “cdma only” will save tons of battery in these situations.

  • Shawn Maloney

That LTE on/off app does not work right on RAZR with ICS, does not take you to the option

  • Knlegend1

That’s crazy that they would do that. So the Razr and the Maxx are different even more now then the larger battery? I find that even more interesting too.

  • Higher_Ground

Not sure how it will work with the multitasking in ICS, but I found it easy to get back to the testing menu by using the recent apps feature on my DX.

  • Explicit

When you shut off the phone, it may revert back to the LTE/CDMA setting. I had to change it back and shut the phone down a few times before it finally stuck to that option

  • http://twitter.com/andrewfowl Andrew Fowl

    nvm

  • http://twitter.com/andrewfowl Andrew Fowl

    WOAH, i just dialed that
*#*#4636#*#* into my dialer on the DX, WTH am I looking at???

    • Higher_Ground

A testing menu. Useful for turning the radio off.

      • http://twitter.com/andrewfowl Andrew Fowl

well, been an Android user for about 4 Years and I’ve never seen this before. I see there are options to use GSM radios. I’m assuming I cannot use that option due to my DX not having GSM radios. Right?

        • Higher_Ground

Yep, it’s an option but it doesn’t actually work. Only used this a few times, once while out of the country so I wasn’t looking for signal.

    • geedee82

All android phones have that hidden menu

  • jonny6pak

That’s absurd. I wonder if there’s a way to make Tasker automate this process so that it can be done from a simple icon.

  • balthuszar

so…they changed “cdma only” to “global?”

    • jonny6pak

Not exactly. They removed the CDMA Only option in full and they replaced it with a new option that only deals with using the Global radios. It would be nice if the change was in name only.

      • balthuszar

so, if they would have said “go into settings, see the “global” option, pick that!” they’d have saved several words…but you know since they put the cdma only option as part of the global option…they didnt really get rid of the cdma only option, just merged it

        • jonny6pak

No, it’s not merged. The Global option only deals with Global radio. You have to go through all the nonsense in the post above to get turn on/off CDMA only. CDMA only is still an option, it’s just a pain in the a$$ to use that option.

  • ryan f

anyone running into a problem where when making the switch background data won’t appear. I’m can’t get my push notifications on 3g, it stays gray

    • jonny6pak

Data should pop back on during the switch, but if that happens you may need to cycle data off and on again to get it to pick back up. I have to do that every once in a great while on my phone when switching between CDMA Only and LTE/CDMA.

  • Michael Quinlan

Verizon wants as many people as possible OFF their 3G network and ON their 4G network, regardless of what that does to your battery life. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this leads to a slew of complaints regarding battery life following the ICS update.

  • stang68

Well, that’s one way to ensure you go over your data cap.

    • LionStone

      Hehe….no doubt…what gives?

      • tater_salad

        Money?

    • yarrellray

This is simply VERIZON showing exactly how much they care about the customers. There NO logical reason for doing this other than to hope and pray that people go over data limits. Another SHAMEFUL act from big red. Something is also a miss on the Galaxy Nexus since the 4.0.4 update data get eaten up so much faster now. Thank God for the options of android because so many people would be screwed.

  • Cheese

Funny, my non Maxx battery lasts most of the day and it’s on 4G 99.9 percent of the time.

    • ryan f

care to share how you survive? I’m running the soak and while it’s blazing fast so is my drain. off the charger 4 hours , with minimal usage and through half a battery

      • Sobr0801

I dont have a problem with my Rezound unless it becomes my main form of entertainment at work.

      • Cheese

Nothing special really, my 4g is solid all the time, I play games a couple times a day, I text all the time.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jclevenger87 Justin Clevenger

i have perfect 4g all the time and the only time my battery runs out fast is when i am using gps like verizon navigator

        • geedee82

Why the hell are you using VZ navigator? Also, gps doesn’t drain battery nearly as fast as the 4g radio, it’s all that 4g data that vz nav is burning that’s draining your battery not the gps, use Google maps its 1000x better and it uses less battery, it’s a no brainer

          • moelsen8

            Well said on all points.

        • dumbass

LOL VZ Nvgator – what are you retarded ? LOL

      • KleenDroid

Sometimes when you get a big update like this your battery initially sucks. Then as everything settles down things improve.

When I first got my Nexus the battery sucked but now it’s great. Maybe it just needs a little time.

        • Larizard

Same here. I did full discharge/recharge cycles my first week on the GNex, and after that, my battery easily last me over a day. I’m not a media power-user though.

    • jonny6pak

4G in general isn’t a battery drain if you have a solid signal . It only becomes a battery drain if the 4G signal sucks and the phone constantly switches between 4G and 3G, or if it’s always trying to find a 4G signal. I have horrible 4G at my work, so I have to disable it when I’m there. At home and around my hometown, it works great with no battery issues. At least that’s my and my coworkers’ experience anyways.

      • Droidzilla

4G drains my battery significantly more than 3G, and I’m in a very strong 4G area (never get switches to 3G).

        • jonny6pak

I guess it depends on the phone and kernel, mabye? I’m using a GNex with a custom kernel and I’m getting great battery life on 4G. No one I work with has a Razr, so I can’t speak to that phone specifically. If it is the kernel, then I hope the mod community can get good access to the Razr’s innards so that users can improve things. It’s not ideal to have to fix these things after the fact, but it could at least be some help. Even so, the hoops to run through to get CDMA only after the Razr ICS update is absurd.

          • Droidzilla

One cannot flash custom kernels on the RAZR due to the locked bootloader. I don’t know if it would even help, though, as the power drain mainly comes from the die size.

  • moelsen8

Ridonkulous.. So Theyre basically forcing bad battery life on people? This seems so irresponsible and unnecessary.

  • http://twitter.com/rjbx rjbx

Very bizarre, but I am not complaining, not a member of the soak test group, but just for kicks and giggles, I went into menu and about phone and what did I see? ICS waiting for me, I pulled it and it has been running on my Razr for the past 45 minutes…Great weekend indeed…

  • http://www.facebook.com/tzimmick Tyler Edwards Zimmick

    Is 4g Better than 3 g anyway

    • MrToTo83

It is better in speeds but not for battery life. Especially if your not in a 4G area.

  • thedonxr

Silly Motorola, let ICS be what ICS is…

    • Derrick James

try telling that to samsung and touchwiz as well

      • hkklife

Yep, Blur ICS is SO awesome in 98% of its appearance and functionality. Then they go and remove the 3G toggle AND USB Charge Only mode (at least on my Bionic running the latest leak). I bet VZW and Moto are gonna get TONS of complaints about battery life once this update rolls out completely.

        • http://www.facebook.com/dnuj88 Dirk Unger

Not to be too far off topic, but I really miss the charge only feature, wish it was as simple as pulling an apk

        • moelsen8

in all fairness, charge-only isn’t an option on the nexus. but i also miss that feature having come from moto phones.

      • yarrellray

I can tell you one thing Samsung and the new narture UI makes the motoblur or whatever they are calling it look so retarded it’s shameful. Software wise the Galaxy S3 runs rings around the Droid Razr and Razr Maxx,

        • jroc74

So first it was stock ics ftw…..now that blur looks basically like stock ics…the new touch wiz runs circles around ics on the RAZR..

I wish you would make up your mind on how you wanna hate on moto

        • moelsen8

Ya know I think motoblur is maturing nicely. Still worse than stock but it ain’t half bad.

    • jroc74

Actually….since it got replaced with global and gsm….I would think Verizon had more of a say so in this…

    • Dj Hidro

They pretty much did. Coming from a Gnex Ics on the my razr maxx is as close to vanilla ics as any company has done that skins android. Minus the moto icons and the smartactions it’s like having a Gnex with better radios and killer battery life.
