DROID RAZR ICS Update Removes “3G Only” Option, Here’s How to Manually Toggle It

For whatever reason, Verizon and Motorola have removed the option under Mobile Network Settings to switch to “CDMA Only” in the Ice Cream Sandwich update that is headed to RAZRs over the next few days. For anyone that doesn’t have a RAZR MAXX, this is a problem, as LTE destroys batteries faster than you can charge them. In place of the former “CDMA Only” option is a “Global” feature for those that travel the world. Why they didn’t leave the old option and simply add “Global” to the list is a great mystery, but don’t worry, we have a way to get you onto 3G and saving batteries in just a few steps.

Instructions:

1.  Open the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
2.  A menu will appear – choose “Phone information.”

3.  Scroll down until you see the pulldown menu for “LTE/CDMA/EvDo/etc.”
4.  Tap on that menu and choose “CDMA Auto (PRL).”

4.  Hit the back button to get out of these menus and to your home screen.
5.  Wait 20-30 seconds and watch your 4G LTE logo turn to 3G.
6.  To confirm you are on 3G only, head into System Settings and tap on the “More…” button.
7.  Tap “Mobile Networks” and “Network type and strength” to see something like this:

8.  Enjoy longer battery life.

*Pro tip:  And if that sounds like a massive pain in the you-know-what, this app will help you do it much faster. It’s a shortcut to this settings menu, making it even easier to toggle the network connection type.

Just applied this to my Droid Bionic, as I’m on the fringe of 4g at home and it kills my battery.
Luckily I’m grandfathered into unlimited data for now, so it’s just a speed hit I’m taking.
    But…you know…not like back in the 80′s…

  • KM

Thanks for this. I couldn’t figure out why my Bionic was using more battery than usual after the upgrade was performed. I finally saw that it had also switched back to 4G from the 3G setting I had it on. Verizon sucks.

Wow, thanks so much. The update wouldn’t let me do it and it was like when i first had this phone, battery draining so fast. This always helped me. So thank you for showing this!

    Works with Droid Bionic. Thanks!

    • Matt

Actually, I just popped on to say the same thing. Works with Droid Bionic. Lol.

So, the Droid M is one of 5 phones which Verizon says has no system select to block roaming signals and to stay on home system. Is there a nifty way around this also? I like the M, but live 2 miles away from the Canadian border, and serve a little church 2 miles over the border. I know I can get US signal there, but it grabs the Canadian signal as soon as I cross over the border (due to internal GPS?). Is there a way to program this phone so that it keeps the American signal even if it is weaker?

    • CementCityBoy

We turned off the GSM in the internal menu and haven’t hit a Canadian tower yet, fingers crossed.

  • er

thanks so much for the fix. I don’t have 4G in my area and it seems pointless while traveling anyway. Will be glad to have my battery back. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention but that update smacked me in the head harder than a Buster Bar!

  • Emily

does this only work with Droid RAZR? I have a droid 4 and the code doesn’t work. Once I press the last asterisk, the entire code disappears from the dialer. Very strange…

It seems that i do not even get a 4G signal anymore. my phone just stays in 3G and 1X. When i used this option and switched over to LTE only, I had no signal at all, the big red cross sign over my bars. I am in downtown Chicago so this is completly inexcusable. Verizon is starting to really tick me off.

hell yea this helped out alot thanks ! been waiting on something like this for a while

You sir, are a life… errr batter saver! Thanks so much for posting this!

  • George

The Thunderbolt App LTE OnOff works on my Motorola Droid Razr

  • ARKirby3

The app works great on my Razr Maxx!

  • Bigga-e

Thank you so much!!!!!!….i was almost very unhappy.

  • Roobs

Thanks for the info, can anyone tell me what the setting would be if I ever want to go back to 4G

  • Dj Hidro

Nice thanks for the tip. If you area in an area without lte they must just want your battery to die. Good tip and I’m glad that I live and travel to lte locations but sometimes I’m fine just running on 3g.

  • lizzicoop

this has nothing to do with Verizon, they are not the ones who made the update. There is not an option available as LTE is so much better than 3G who would want 3G over 4G speed on 19mps… Put the blame where it belongs the developers not the phone company. Yall just lookin for a reason to bash Verizon! Check out their new Share Everything Plans that actually save ppl money and makes them cheaper than AT&T.

  • sunni2212

Yes!!!! Thanks a million! I can’t stand that Verizon will not only start charging people for their data usage, but now won’t let consumers freely toggle between the amounts of data we want to use.

Okay after doing as you instructed and downloading the thunderbolt app/shortcut I am wondering if i want to turn the the 4g back on which option is it to turn it back on is it
    LTE/CDMA/EvDo .
    thank you,,

    • JD Adams

I had trouble getting 4G to turn back on using this method/app, after you set it to LTE/CDMA/EvDO, you might have to go into Wireless & networks -> mobile networks and select the preferred network mode to LTE/CDMA. Hope this helps.
