Spotify on Android is Receiving a Makeover, Download the Preview Now

Spotify announced this morning that their Android app is about to receive a complete overhaul, but before it goes live in the Play Store, they want to give you a preview. So you can download it below and take it for a spin. In this latest version, you will find full support for Ice Cream Sandwich, a massive redesign (that is buttery smooth by the way), new navigation menu, more social fun, high-res artist imagery, and more.

  • Totally new app with full support for Android 4.0
  • Top-to-bottom redesign
  • All-new slide-out navigation
  • Even more social – check out friends’ profile pages and playlists on the go
  • Artist imagery in high resolution
  • Related artist view – available for the first time on mobile
  • ‘Extreme’ sound quality setting for 320kbps listening
  • So much faster!

There is one problem though – mobile listening of tunes is only available to premium users. So you can download this app and browse around in it, but unless you are paying the $9.99 per month service fee to be “premium” you won’t be able to listen to anything.

Cheers Tim and Spencer!

  • I wish there was still an option to play all of your playlists shuffled together instead of having to pick just one playlist considering that was pretty much the only way I listened to it.

Oh thank god, this was the worst app ever. Can’t wait to play with the new one oh it’d done!

  • I like the look a lot better, but I hope this app is VERY beta for the following reasons:
    1. NO LANDSCAPE MODE.  WTF?  I’m sure it will be in the final build, but why the heck is it missing from this preview?2. No lock screen controls for ginberbread.  I’m running a stock Razr.  This is pretty lame.  ICS can’t come fast enough.3. I really hope their is some sort of car dock mode which displays big controls and track information.

    4. The quality of the streaming music seemed crappier.  Really hope it’s just an issue with the preview app.

  • Honestly, this preview is useless, seeing as they failed to include the following:
    1. A widget (seriously, the current market release has one…why would this be removed?)
    2. Landscape mode (particularly for tablet devices) – which is one of my biggest gripes with the current version.

If only there was a service with Spotify’s interface, apps, support, and popularity as well as Grooveshark’s library and prices…

  • DLNA and/or Airplay support please…

Thank the gods. I love Spotify, but the app was not great.

  • aaeagle

Original app was so bad it drove me away from spotify.  Sounds like so many things were fixed.  Is there a landscape orientation now?  I hate having it in a car dock and having things sideways.

  • nside1

Love the new app / lock screen controls / speed.  Thank you spotify!

  • You only get one chance to make a first impression.  The old App was so mediocre and the service so underwhelming an update like this will change nothing.  I have simply returned to my own MP3s easily accessible through Google Music and Amazon MP3.

  • Tried it on my Galaxy Nexus.  Top-notch update, nice to see it catch up to (and in a few ways leapfrog) the iOS app.  Let’s just hope development continues instead of needing another remake a year from now.

Has anyone found where to locate the “Top Lists” that were in the old version as well as the desktop program? Can’t find it anywhere.

      And it’s sexyyyyy!

  • I wish the app would work in landscape!  I usually have my phone in a dock on my desk.

  • Email

Using a Galaxy Nexus and scrolling isn’t all that smooth. Is it just me?

I also dislike the Facebook-style menu; wish they had stuck to Holo theme more closely.

    • Tweekex

      Buttery smooth for me.

    • mikesuds

Smooth for me but agree completely on the design. I hate it.

    • docmars

Absolutely smooth on my Galaxy Nexus, no lag whatsoever. They definitely could stick a tiny bit closer to the Holo specifications, but admittedly, this refresh is 100x better than the original app by miles. Just the speed improvement alone is huge.

Let’s also not forget that it’s a preview. Perhaps there’s room for things to change and improve?

      What it needs:
      * Notification play controls (like Google Music)
      * Lock screen play controls
      * Auto-complete/correction in search

      • jukes

Lock Screen controls exist. Try Force Closing Spotify and clearing App data.

Settings -> Apps -> Spotify -> Force Stop
Settings -> Apps -> Spotify -> Clear Data

        • docmars

          That did it! Thanks!

    • Paul

Well, on a stock 4.0.4 Galaxy Nexus, I’m noticing some quirks with the smoothness of the scrolling.

If I first open the app into the playlists screen, the scrolling is smooth. But then if I navigate to the “what’s new” screen and then again to the playlists screen, scrolling is no longer smooth. But if I hit the hard back button twice to return to the original instance of the playlists screen, scrolling is smooth again.

      Anyone notice the same thing?

  • Can someone please post a few screenshots of this running on a pre-4.0 device? Trying to get an idea of how ICS-styled applications display on earlier devices.

  • dcdttu

Well the problem isn’t exactly a problem, as that’s how it’s always been, right?

Eiether way, this is the fastest Android app I’ve ever used.  It’s beautiful, brilliant, and damn near a year late. lol

Now, can’t wait for the integrated lock screen and navigation window controls.  Yay!

    • “navigation window controls”

THIS!!!  Why can’t any other music app besides Google Music do this?  So annoying.

    • GuidZilla

Lockscreen is available. Go into Phone settings and clear Spotify’s data. after that it the lockscreen controls show up just fine.

      • Are you on ICS? I’m on Sense 3.0 and I cleared app data and restarted and no lockscreen controls…  hmmm.  Anyway, I am loving the look and feel of the new update.  You can really hear a difference with the 320kbps selected.  Took a little getting used to though, I’m really hoping for a widget and lockscreen controls when it clears beta.

        • GuidZilla

          Yep gnex

        • The lockscreen controls will only work for ICS, because that’s what they’;re made for. Spotify have simply plugged their app into the stock lockscreen controls.

Just flash a ROM on your device. You’re using a HTC, so it shouldn’t be difficult at all.

      • Kerrythebeast

I’m not seeing that under lock controls?

        • GuidZilla

          • Kerrythebeast

Stupid me I had widget locker running

  • professionalgun

About frickin’ time! It’s always annoyed me that Spotify still looked like it was designed for Cupcake!

    Now we’re in business.

  • Cool feature with the Facebook-style options pane on the left:  rather than clicking the icon in the top left, try swiping in from the bezel.  Works flawlessly.  Wish Facebook had built that into their app.

This is a HUGE improvement though!!

    • I wish facebook would have built a working app into their app, rather than the pile of useless, buggy, slow, broken POS it is now.

    • dcdttu

And unlike the FB app, this one works and works FAST.  GAWD this is probably the best Android app I’ve ever used.

  • Not A Name

Can I add my songs not on the spotify servers and use this to replace Google music?

    • Yes, you can, but I’ve read it may not be in the beta yet.

    • Spotify will not host your music files, however the Spotify app (both mobile and desktop) can play local files on your machine. I have a dropbox folder with all my albums that Spotify doesn’t have. Keeps everything sync’d nicely.

    • dcdttu

Also, Spotify, when connected to the same wifi network as your computer with the desktop app can sync from your desktop to your mobile, pushing files to your phone.  It’s great for songs that aren’t in Spotify.  Whether this beta can yet, I don’t know.  Personally, I don’t care right now because the original app is so bad it hardly worked.

  • Some aspects of Rdio are still better.  There is one thing about Spotify that other services just can’t seem to match.  Songs play pretty much instantly, which is really great.

Plus, no lockscreen play controls is a huge fail. Maybe they’ll add those before it leaves beta.

Also, what’s up with the non-ICS screenshots in this article? I am disappoint.

    • MikeD

Haven’t done this, but read somewhere that if you forcestop the app and clear the data, the lockscreen controls become available.

      • I read that too.  I’ve done everything I can think of: force stop, reboot, uninstall/reinstall.  I don’t see any lockscreen controls.

        • G-Insane

Force stop and clear data. You can then use lock screen controls, and they are epic.

          • CheeseMcGee

            WOW, it actually works.  sweetness!

Now I just need my widget back!

          • Got it working, thanks.  Strange that an uninstall/reinstall didn’t do it.  Also, why are the lock screen controls epic?  They’re just the standard ICS lockscreen music controls, same as Google Music and Rdio have.  What would be epic is if it had notification controls like Google Music.
