LG Spectrum Gets First Ad Featuring R2-D2

The LG Spectrum officially launched yesterday on Verizon for $199. The first commercial for it officially launched this morning, although we can’t stop scratching our heads over it. While the spot itself is actually worth a laugh, the fact that R2-D2 makes a cameo is simply odd (at first). After all, the Spectrum is not “DROID” branded and R2 comes straight out of Star Wars and and the mind of George Lucas where the word “DROID” is currently being licensed from.

In the end though, it’s obvious that Phantom Menace in 3D needed another plug and what better way to do that than through the wireless carrier Lucas is in bed friends with.

Cheers Jay!

MUCH better advertising than the trash used for the DROID line. Hopefully Verizon gets a great response to this one and changes their marketing direction.

Please explain to me WHY you wouldn’t pick Artoo? He doesn’t NEED a starfighter! Just as long as the droid they give me isn’t C2-N2, I would be happy.

Seeing Episode I at the end cracked me up.

  • LionStone

Dang, LG just slammed the competition…

I think they’re making fun of Motorola and the million accessories they release for all of their phones these days…

  • Verizon apparently put more money on promoting a mid-end LG phone than on the Galaxy Nexus, sigh …

    • Firebat1212

does the nexus really need any advertisement? i dont think so

    • How is the Spectrum a mid level phone. It is not the top of the line phone for verizon I will give you that, but it has a 4.5 inch screen, dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm processor. It’s also got an 8MP rear-facing camera, front-facing 1.3MP camera, and can share its 4G LTE data with up
to 10 Wifi-connected devices. Regardless of what you think of LG as a company this is still a very nice phone spec wise. It is much better then the Revolution!

OMG I’m so getting the R2D2 Droid Spectrum?

    I’m I doing it right?

  • TheRobotCow

Im using a Droid R2D2 running liberty rom. I think its a pretty cool phone the way it is now

  • Who would pick that phone over an R2 unit. Hell, I’d even pick R2 over my Nexus any day.
On a side note, maybe VZW has been so testy w/ their droids lately is b/c they have beard rash from  George Lucas.

What makes it interesting, is as it makes it look like the price of the various droid phones are “pricey” hum!

Maybe watching Episode 1 in 3D will help me forget how retarded Jar Jar Binks is. Meh, probably not. By far the worst character Lucas ever created. At least Jaba the Hut was funny and fun to impersonate. Jar Jar is just retarded, and we all know it’s not nice to poke fun at retards!

    • Daryl Johnston

Oh, yeah, speaking of retards…Everyone knows that LG is the Korean word for “crap” right?

    • Edwin M

Nothing can ever make me forget Tard Tard Binks.

  • ….Are those guys twins?

Makes perfect sense. What else can they do but distract the consumer when they don’t have crap for worthwhile devices. Everybody is doing it. Advertise something that hooks the viewer and doesn’t actually let them know how f’d up it all is.

    • Anonymous

      worthless devices??

      • Anonymous

        It’s subjective. Roll with it.

  • hahaha “it’s like a billion dollars in gas”

Anyone else remember that hideous “R2D2” Droid 2?

    • I do. I was so excited for it until I saw it. They should have just kept it looking like the original Droid 2  and added all the Star Wars apps to it instead.

  • Murph

weird.  First thing I thought of was choosing the LG phone over a DROID……

    • Anonymous

Same here. I think that is the message. Which is just pathetic.

having to think about phantom menace coming back around makes me think of the south park episode where lucas and spielberg rape indiana jones.  hahaha.

    • I rather liked that movie.. having said that a 3D version was in no way necessary.

      • Anonymous

yeah, i removed my comment about it sucking after i realized i really liked it when it came out.  but now i just can’t sit through it.

wonder what lucas will change in this version.

        • Perhaps Jarjar will have a terrible accident and die. if that is the case, i will go see it.

          • Anonymous

best star wars movie ever!  haha

          • Daryl Johnston

Can we finally get past re-releasing the same movies in 14 different formats and start filming Episode 7 already!?!

    • That episode was actually on this week on Comedy Central.
